Optimal Lurker/Hunting Grounds strat according to sims:
Open Invest/Lurker
When buying Lurker, immediately discard Lurker from Exile. Keep buying Invest on Lurker.

Action phase:
Lurker and trash Hunting Grounds into Duchy/into Estates when Duchy empty

This strategy wins 46% - 42% in the mirror where opp doesn't Invest.

The mirror match averages 6.6 turns. First player advantage is huge: 55% - 33%

Adding Witch or other stuff plummets the win rate

Look for broken synergies and exploit them. If not there, look for strong synergies and exploit those. Lastly look for any synergy and incorporate that in an overall cohesive strategy (like engine, big money or rush).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: no idea how to play this kingdom
« on: January 01, 2024, 09:44:14 am »
I fired up the simulator to solve this. Best strategy is Double Witch + 1 Moat. Open Silver/Moat or Witch/Moat. Buy the first Witch over Gold. Then just get Money.
Adding Poacher(s) is terrible, plummeting the win rate to 41%.
Adding Markets drops the win rate by 1%.

Interestingly in a 4-player game the optimal strategies change. If 3 players play Witch you should not buy Witch, just Moats. If 2 players play Witch then they win against 2 Moat players. And 1 Witch crushes 3 Moat players.

So uh, on a Voyage turn, if I play three cards and two of them are Throne Rooms, what happens next? Does Voyage overrule Throne Room's instructions?
If Throne Room is your 3rd played card from your hand you won't be able to play another card from your hand. If Throne Room is the 2nd card you can play your next card twice because the 4th action is not played from your hand... I think

Other Games / Re: Lots of games played last week

Red Cathedral - Pretty unique game I learned recently; quite good.
Bought this one. A lot of game in a small box. Puzzly, but might take too long for some.

Trajan - One of my favorite Felds.
I love Feld. This one was fine for me, not great. The Mancala is hard to get my head around.

Lost Ruins of Arnak - Great game! Maybe the only deck builder that didn't make me go "sure this is fine, but here's why Dominion is better". The deck building aspec is only a small part of it; not the focus at all. And of course as a Dominion player I tried to over-play the deck building part of it while ignoring most other things, and lost because of it.
I like this colorful game but still don't know what I'm doing. Playable on BoardGameArena.

Pick-omino - A fun press-your-luck game from Reiner Knizia.
Good for families. I prefer Sushizock im Gockelwok from Knizia. Seems like a better version.

Roll Player - Finally learned this. A dice-drafting game; it was fine but not a favorite.
Fun puzzle game.

Red7 - Fine if you want to play a game and only have 3 minutes available.
Good filler

6 nimmt - Not very good with only 3 people; needs more.
More chaos is more fun, sure.

Skull - Just learned this recently; pretty good light game. Better with more people.
Very good bluffing game. Great for parties.

Feast for Odin - Finally played the new Harvest mini expansion along with the enhanced 6-round setup rules. Still a great game.
My favorite board game of all time (Dominion is an online addiction which doesn't count). So satisfying when you find the perfect path to fill up your island and collect ALL the bonuses. I've been playing it non-stop on BoardGameArena (still in alpha). If you want to play, send me a message!!

Architects of the West Kingdom - Another great game; looking forward to playing more. Action-selection where actions get better the more you do them; but with a press-your-luck aspect where people have an incentive to take all your workers if you have too many gathered in the same spot. Very nice flow with no downtime, and pretty unique. First in a series of 3 games by the same designer.
This didn't do much for me. A fine worker placement, but nothing special.

Temporum - Another one you know. I won with Alien Egypt by getting to $100 quite quickly. Had Black Market in my opening hand, and played 2 more "Black Markets" using Age of Cybernetics. Along with a Gang of Pickpockets, each turn I simply played a card in order to draw a card get an extra $6 on top of the card value/effect. It was nuts.
Not Donald's greatest effort, but I will never say no to play it.

Yokohama - Learned this recently; good game.
Played this once on Board Game Arena. Was good, but would like to try IRL.

Wingspan - I didn't like this the first time I played it a while ago. Still not a big fan. Too many little things where the game emphasizes theme and form over function. Also very punishing to new players when playing with people who know what they're doing.
Non gamers and gamers enjoy this so it's good. Not amazing, just a solid little engine builder.

Hallertau - A somewhat new Uwe Rosenberg game that I learned recently and loved. Still great on the second play.
Another great Rosenberg design. Played this 1-, 2- and 3-player and it was fun every time. The cards are the heart of the game.

The Isle of Cats - Finally learned this one. It was ok; I'd play again but not sure if I love it.
Nope, this didn't do it for me. Colorful, but I prefer other Tetris games.

Tichu - Played multiple games of Tichu, of course.
A classic. A few too many rules but great fun.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Semi-Interesting Dominion Moments Thread

Last turn of the game. 1 Province left, and I can afford to buy it and tie. However I can't see a win with no +buy in the kingdom.

Then I remembered something. I had Necromancer in my hand so I could play a Zombie Mason with it, hit one of the many $4 cards in my deck, gain a Duchy and win instead of tie.

The Zombie Mason hit a Province and I lost the game.

Don't get greedy.
Let's say you have 7 targets of $4 and 3 Provinces in a 30 card deck. So 20/30 ties, 7/30 wins and 3/30 losses. 7-3 = 4. So your EV (expected value) is positive and you should go for it. If however you have a lower rating than your opponent, a tie is worth more than 0 and your EV for taking the risk might be lower than not taking the risk.

Simulation / Re: How to download simulator
« on: September 22, 2020, 05:01:04 pm »
To launch the simulator client you need to have Java installed. Then you can start it up by clicking Windows button and typing 'javaws http://users.telenet.be/jeroenaga/dominion.jnlp'.

Yes, the fact that current online Dominion allows you to see all previous information really bugs me. I think Iso had a great solution of only showing the past 2 turns.

I agree.
And i don't like seeing victory points during the game. We lose a lot of strategy at the end of the game...
Viewing victory points should not be automatically checked in lobby.

Being able to remember victory points is not strategy.

I was wondering if you could write a feature to run many different AIs head to head, so we can get a better idea of what counters what without tediously running each separate simulation. Also menagerie would be a welcome update!
I suppose I could write a service that accepts a csv-file with a bunch of matchups and then spits out a csv with the results. If you're a programmer you're free to implement it yourself. The code is open source on Github.

I've implemented most of the Menagerie cards. I plan to make an anouncement when I'm finished with the whole set.

13
I was in a hurry (had to take my son to soccer training). I left in a good mood thinking I nicely three-piled that game. I just came back and saw the "Geronimoo resigned" on my screen...  :-\ A good lesson

14
You can set the player order fixed for all games (Player 1 will always be first player, then Player 2, then Player 3). Just check the box on the main screen "Keep this player order for all games".

There is no option to count total cards in opponent's deck, but I'll provide it in the next release.

Renaissance had been fully implemented in the sim

Ali Nocturne cards have been implemented.

Only a few nocturne cards have been implemented. I can prioritize them if you ask for specific cards.
