Too ADD to write a full article.  But I just don't get the voters, or maybe they didn't quite get the power of WW when voting in 2017. I mean WW is under Summons?  That's comical to me.

I just played a board where both were available, and there were +2 actions available too with Walled Village.  And WW's piled and there were 7 torturers left.  And I LOVE Torturer.  But Torturer is like being a two-tool MMA star. with all the glitz and Glamour   But WW is a 4 tool MMA star, with a lesser reputation.

Let's compare.  One of them gives u three cards and an optional discard 2/curse option.  This ability really shines when you get Menage a Torturer ( 2) or Torturer Bukkake (3+) often meaning that most people buy a shitload of Torturers to achieve this effect.  But It also often leads to drawing itself and other actions dead.  You either play it or u don't. Torturer is good at the beginning and middle of games, but once curses go it loses a lot of its value.  It even helps enable decks that benefit on selective hand reduction in cards like cursed villages, shanty town, menagerie

Now let's look at WW.  It's a goddamn swiss army knife of badassery. You CAN get 3 cards if needed for coins, especially if u have the actions.  Also great when u load up on WW's because WW's often even draw more WW's and this give more hexes help cycle decks. I have played one WW (after thinking of just hexing w/ one) and drawn 3 more WW's a couple of times.  Near a reshuffle?  Just end turn and hex em (possibly even cursing them or causing the same or lesser discard/coin reducing effect too).  In this same place, Torturer can't be played without triggering reshuffle. WW is good at the beginning, middle and especially the end of games.  Most people plan on hitting 8 p w/ 5 cards.  By reducing coins, cards, adding coppers and all the stuff hexes do (especially when multiple hexes) can really stall a  pretty decent engine or big money style deck.

And WW has twice as many cards types (4 vs 2) so that in courtier/ironworks/sacrifice type situations that adds even more stuff where that helps.

Witch shines at the beginning giving out curses but still has the draw dead problem.  By end game it's a reactionless moat and often trashing it before the end game is optimal.

Plus you can't tell from his picture that he totally smokes that fire shit too...: Though based on the color of that sky he might be smoking pcp-*

In order to make it more like real-life Dominion, ShuffleIT allows your opponent to sneak a Copper into your deck while you aren’t looking.

I started thinking about this with Tomb on a recent board (obv w/out trashers) I really like this event and  it seems such a waste when it's on the board without trashing.  Is there some way that in the same way that heirloom cards are always tied to each other, that there is a way to add a "board must include one card w/ trashing power when Tomb event is present" in the coding for the Tomb card?

I've also decided to combine this idea with another I had recently and just ask if we could more generally have "random" draws but with certain parameters met.  Options such as "include one + action", "include one +1 buy" etc, or "exclude curses/attacks etc, or even specifically  "exclude rebuild/kings court etc"

I personally believe that more cards need to be added with + buy potential, but this would be one way to ensure that u don't get a "dud board" without cherry picking the deck or anything.

Dominion Articles / Re: Archive
« on: May 11, 2018, 09:00:46 pm »
In a small deck that draws itself, each play of Archive removes itself and two cards out of the top three for the turn. So in total, that is more like three cards removed from your deck, including one Archive, but Archive just replaces itself on play so it's not a big loss to your deck's payload or anything. So really, each Archive effectively removes two valuable cards from a thin deck on play that you only get back after two turns, rather than four as claimed in the article.

I like that you discuss late-game sifting. Setting aside a Province is sometimes useful with Gear to reduce chances of having a dud turn, and the same is true for Archive.

agreed.  being able to pull a VP card into a hand that is already strong enough for what u need can be very helpful as a pseudo-sifting tool.

It feels remiss not to mention Tunnel when talking about Shepherd. And not to mention Inheritance when talking about Pasture.

But this bit bugs me considerably:
in order to get started, you want to make sure to always start with a Shepherd in hand. Assuming a 5 card starting hand, that means that 20% of your deck should be Shepherds.
It's simply not true that 20% of your deck being Shepherds means that if you draw 5 cards you're certain one will be a Shepherd. All you're certain of is that you'll average one Shepherd per five cards.

As an example, if you have twenty cards, four of which are Shepherds, you only have a 72% chance of drawing a Shepherd.

That's not just mathematical nitpicking; it seems to me it strikes at the heart of the viability of a Shepherd engine. Especially as a hand with multiple Shepherds is also undesirable.

I just played a tunnel shephard game.  it was amazing.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that you don't necessarily want all of the Villas.  If you don't need additional actions or buys, Villa is basically just a Copper (that can be drawn dead, costs more, etc.), and gaining a bunch of Coppers to your hand is probably not the best move.

So while this combo is certainly useful, you should take care not to do it unthinkingly just because you can; make sure that every Villa you buy is making your deck stronger rather than weaker (or denying your opponent, moving towards a three-pile, or serving some other purpose that makes it worthwhile).  Even without this combo, I've often seen inexperienced players overbuy Villas just because it's convenient even when those Villas did them more harm than good.

yeah i only bought villas when they collide. And i think i bought like 4 or 5 on my mega turn to draw the rest and pile out provies easily.

On the same topic a fantastic engine to murder your opponents that i pulled out the other day and just crushed someone.  Villa/Bridge on same board.  Buy literally as many bridges as you can get your hands on.  If they collide just buy cheap villas.  needs a tiny bit of draw but this absolutely crushed

That was kinda my point.  This thread hadn't been posted in in 4 years... and it's still on page 7 on the forum.  That's a pretty sad rate of activity when you think about it.

This is a good start to an introductory article to Dominion Base 2nd ed. Not sure what exactly it's supposed to get at but it's a nice read and there's nothing wrong content-wise.
If it's directed towards beginners (which I assume) and also for the sake of courtesy, I would strongly advice you to omit the phrase

First off, yes, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year
This is a snotty remark against the reader and you can't know how each individual person on the internet receives that. You don't want anyone to start reading your article (or end it right there) with a bad first impression, do you?

Since you mentioned how much the 2nd ed in particular has to offer, consider writing a paragraph about catrips. Explain what they are and why they're good to have in your deck; reliable action densitiy, Vassal enablers, good targets for Throne Rooms, etc.

I mean I personally think it kinda sucks.  In some quirky combos in makes sense but I mean I don't care if it's on the board or not.  I mean it's on a two card list with Possession, one of the most controversial and hated cards?  I'd much prefer to see Kings court or Rebuild on a banned list than stupid stash.

Cultist
Fairgrounds
Fool's Gold
Knights
Magpie
Peddler
Rats
Tournament
Transmute
Treasure Map

Cultist isn't that bad even when you only have one of them.

I assume that he listed it for the same reason he listed Fool's Gold, Treasure Map, Rats, Magpie, Transmute, and Knights... it's a card that can't fully do what it says if you only can get one of them. So it becomes just a weaker Witch. I don't think there's anything wrong with that though; it's probably still strong enough that you'd at least consider getting it.

especially if its the only source of ruins.  more-so in a multiplayer game.

I favor AdamH's view:  it isn't the luck aspect of Black Market that's the major problem, it's the *exclusivity* aspect.  One of the big points of Dominion is that everyone has access to the same cards in each game.  Sure, there are piles where who gets to them *first* is a factor, but except in weird cases, you'll always have the chance to buy every card on the board.

Black Market and Tournament both break that part of the basic premise of Dominion.  That's the reason I find both distasteful.

The thing I like with Black Market is the variety it gives to a board, with unique cards to put in your deck. But I'm also not that fond of the exclusitivy aspect, and I think I would have preferred everyone to have their own BM deck with one each of the BM cards selected for this game.  Then they shouldn't be more than perhaps ~20, so you have a decent shot of finding your own copy of That Important Card that you opponent(s) already are using.

somehow I never even considered this, but this alone would make the card much better IMHO.

I despise luck-based cards (Swindler and Urchin come to mind), but i looooove Black Market.  Like, it is my favorite card by a lot (Bishop comes in at a distant 2nd).  I just love the possibilities it gives you.  And that's basically how I see it -- it doesn't add luck to the game as much as it adds possibilities.  You have to have a legitimate reason to ignore 25 kingdom cards.  And like you mention, it adds other neat mechanics to the game (in addition to what you mentioned: draw-up-to-x, Menagerie, exclusive access to Prizes, etc.).

Who really dislikes it?  I'd be curious to know why, especially if it were for other reasons besides just the luck factor.

Totally agree.  Nothing makes a game more one sided than one guy getting the only tournament/KC/Prince  or even curser/looter when no others are available on the board

Man, I don't understand why people hate on Balck Market.

Poor taste, unfortunately, is an all too common affliction.

are you referring to the Urban dictionary sex act http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=balck
or the Nazi general https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Balck.

I guess both are in pretty poor taste...

I still wonder how some people can be 4000+ and have a negative iso rank.

There is a known bug where if you change your username then your iso rank won't update with the extension and will look like -50. But their rank for the new username will be correct on the leaderboard.  http://www.gokosalvager.com/leaderboard

ahh. That makes more sense too.  I'd always wondered about that. I didn't even know you could change your username.  How do you do it?

Your opponent quit. At the bottom it says this and correctly labels you the winner. The first result is incorrect and results from a bug.

ahh then the points make sense I guess.  thanks.

added oddness, I somehow was granted 45 pts for a win by Goko.  I've had games where i was womping someone 10 turns in, they quit and I get 0 pts.  Wonder if this  is some weird hack/glitch as The guy I was playing is one of the guys who has a 4500 rating and a negative Isotropish score.
