Civ has a steep learning curve and given past civ tutorials I'm not surprised 6's is terrible.

City population tells you how many hexes can be worked by the city. If you open the city screen you can see each tile produces some resources like food or gold or whatnot. Click a tile to work it, or you can have the city automatically pick tiles to work. Each population point consumes some amount of food. Any food you produce over this amount goes into a bucket. When that bucket fills, you city increases in population and you can work an extra tile, getting more resources, but consuming more food.

The gear resource is production. Your city can also build one thing at a time like a unit or building. Each thing takes a certain amount of gears to complete. The more gears you produce per turn the quicker you finish whatever you are making.

Units and buildings have a gold maintenance cost. You get gold lots of ways but it is another resource you can see in tiles. If you don't produce enough gold you slowly drain your coffee and units will go away until you're in the black. Also gold can be used to directly purchase buildings and units instantly in your cities.

Villa: In my experience it hasn't been that game-breaking. The magic goes away once the pile empties, and then it's a crummy non-drawing village. Also, it's $4, so you'll need enough money left over to do something with after returning to Actions.

You're underrating just how magical the magic is while it's still in the supply. I find it to be gamebreaking often enough to deserve a high spot. Also, while Villa isn't amazing once it's in your deck, +buy is still good to have. It gives you two of the major engine pieces in one card.

Anyone else watching the new season of Black Mirror? I just finished the first episode and it was pretty great.

Why is no one including the Holiday Special in their rankings? Is it just so obviously #1 that it doesn't need to be said?

Just saw it. Thought it was one of the best star wars movies. Top 3 maybe. Though the bar isn't all that high for the series. Most of the faults I see are endemic to the whole series so I don't see why this is so much lower rated.

I'm really hoping for a novel about snoke though. That seems like a ton of wasted potential.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How good is Goat?

Goat doesn't just trash estates, it trashes one (usually) before the first shuffle. That alone makes it phenomenal.

Some kingdoms contain the tools you need to help Treasure Maps collide; some don't.

The same can be said for Province/Tournament or Magic Lamp/6 distinct uniques.

So then the question becomes: in each case, how likely is it that a random kingdom will contain the help one needs?

With tournament or lamp? A majority of the time. With maps, a minority of the time (though you can sometime back into them as payload once you've built). This is why I said "on average". Obviously exceptions always exist.

Tournament/Province

Magic Lamp

It really feels like Treasure Map ought to be mentioned in the same breath as those.

The difference between those and treasure map is all of the other examples are on average very strong so you usually go for it but you might get unlucky, whereas tmap is on average very weak so you usually don't go for it, but you might get lucky if you do.

Having not played with it myself, I'm not seeing why it would be swingy or luck-based. It sounds a lot like Horn of Plenty, which doesn't feel swingy or luck-based. It rewards building a deck that can get a lot of different cards into play at once. Playing one is kind of like playing 3 Horn of Plenties... which is great, but not swingy.

And Tournament is seen as Swingy because it strongly rewards the first player to pull it off. Magic Lamp is just as good if you pull it off second; especially if you do so before your opponent shuffles.

So what am I missing?

It's likely one player can hit a shuffle or two before the other. Wishes are crazy good since they non-terminally gain to hand. If you get 3 more good cards in your deck even a shuffle faster, the snowball effect is going to be huge.

69
It does seem very swingy, but it's something strong you usually need to build around, and I'm not sure it's more swingy than other cards in that class.

My wife just successfully defended her Ph.D. so now we have a Doctor and a Master in the house.  :)

That's convenient, you can just overpay her whenever you need to get rid of stuff.

No, she's a Ph.D., not a real Doctor.

(although I would research which ones to uses to leave minimal smudging).
I've done that research: fine-point Sharpie.

However, I did that research for Pandemic Legacy. Nocturne is not a legacy game...

Dominion: Legacy. When you trash a card, literally trash the card.

Not sure if the issue has been fixed where 1 too many Vault plays locks you out.

Yeah, I think that bug is fixed.

King's court and X is a fun combo, where X is the set of all action cards.

Cue the edge cases.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How good is Fishing Village really?
« on: December 07, 2017, 11:42:22 am »
Fishing village let's you play an additional terminal this turn and next turn, so the fact that it's a duration doesn't make it worse for terminal space than regular village, even when drawing your deck. It also provides $2 in the space of one card, so the copper comparison isn't great. Not drawing is the main downside, but starting your turn with an extra action often makes up for that and more, since it makes stalling a lot less likely.

And the fact that it doesn't draw only matters every other turn  Or to be more clear, if you are drawing your deck, fishing village is sort of like a bazaar that only draws every other play, that also gives a bit more start turn consistency.

If there are other villages around, you do probably want to get some of those as well, but on single village boards, fishing village is one of the best you can hope for.
