Hi,
do you think this card would work?

Lieutenant - Action Duration (6)
Put a card from your hand face up on top of your Lieutenant deck.
At the start of your turn for the rest of the game, you may put one copy of the top card of your Lieutenant deck from your hand to the Lieutenant deck.

Rules: the lieutenant deck is a deck of face up cards on your lieutenant mat.
I think it might be too powerful for 6, and it has quite a lot of text for a pretty simple effect. Do you have any suggestion on how to shorten it?

General Discussion / Re: Donating plasma
« on: September 02, 2015, 05:15:09 am »
In France, it's all handled by one institute (EFS), and they basically do 3 of those : blood, plasma and platelets. Most people give blood, because it's the quickest, but when you're a regular they tell you when they have a particular need for plasma and/or platelets, which take up a lot more time and are also closed off to more people (I know my sister wasn't abled to give platelets after she had children for example). For me it's not that I prefer one over the other, it's mostly up to what they need at that particular moment.

It's very weird to me that plasma isn't covered by the Red Cross in the US, I wonder where's the origin for that.

I also wonder how that works, legally speaking. I'm assuming you are not allowed to sell organs in the US right ? It seems to me that by the same logic you shouldn't be able to sell plasma, or blood, or whatever.

I think they're officially decking your expenses, as you would need to take time off work to donate plasma. (here many people only donate in the weekends)

There seems to be a little confusion here. There are two different common blood donation processes:

  • Whole blood donation. They take a whole pint of your blood, straight out with a needle; later, in the lab, they separate the blood out into its components. The red blood cells and platelets are used for transfusions (trauma patients, etc); the plasma is used for transfusions but also other stuff. You can only do this once every 8 weeks, because replacing the red blood cells takes a lot of time. In the US, donors aren't usually paid; they give you cookies and juice and sometimes a t-shirt, coupon, or whatever a local company tosses in as a goodwill freebie. The Red Cross is the biggest organization that does this, but local blood centers do too.
  • Plasma donation. They take the blood out of your body, separate out the plasma (with a centrifuge or filter), and put the cells and platelets back in. This takes a little longer, but you can do it much more often because plasma is replaced quickly. Donors are usually paid (according to the articles, you can do it twice a week and it comes out to $10-$15/hour). I don't believe the Red Cross does plasma donations; this is typically a commercial endeavor, and the plasma is sold to be used to make medical products (I'm not familiar with the details, sorry).

There are more exotic donations (platelet donation, double red cell donation) but these are the common ones.

Background: I'm an American; I usually donate whole blood 4 or so times a year. I can't exercise effectively for a day or so after but otherwise don't notice any effect; this is pretty common, but some people feel more tired than usual for the rest of the day.
Yeah, here in Europe you do both for free, usually plasma donors are either sporty people who don't want to lose endurance or people who react negatively to volume loss (people who have a strong vasovagal response), such as myself.
The max frequency of donation here in Italy is:
1/3 mth whole blood men
1/6 mth whole blood women
1/mth plasma
4/year platelets

Blood donations are a bit more tolling, but they go faster. I suppose you can't donate plasma at the American Red Cross because plasmapheresis machines are very expensive.

I donate (as in: for free) plasma about 6 times a year, I didn't know that you could do it for profit in America, but as an European the thing sound ethically appalling to me. From personal post-donation experience, I know I couldn't do it twice a week; and my incomplete education as med student suggests that it also would be a pretty bad idea. None of the articles mentioned the volume of harvested plasma per donation, I'm supposing it's the same as here.
Here they "reward" us by offering free quite in-depth health checkouts and breakfast after the donation. Plus medals and stuff if you donate for 10, 25, 50 years.
I don't know whether there's something similar in America, and if there are systems to make sure that the plasma from those sources is used for humanitarian aims, and it's not just free money to the corporations. If such a system exists, I encourage you to donate, as it is a very good and harmless thing to do (at a rate of donation that's appropriate for you).

I think quintessence should cost 6 or be worth 1. I'm not sure I like the idea of watering down the choice of whether to get potion, and Quintessence currently compares way too favorably with Potion.
The pearl of this set for me is Metallurgist. It's a really cool concept, even though it might need some cost/power adjustments with playtesting (the fact that you draw the revealed card is cool and cute).

1081
So they haven't fixed the wild, askew text?  The thing that makes it literally impossible to play the game if you don't have every card memorized?
Have you tried playing around with resolution settings? I seem to remember that it fixed the problem for some people.

…So, do we have enough of these yet to put together the "Dominion: Artificial Intelligence" fan expansion?

(Is Mold balanced at $3? The obvious comparison is Cache: Mould gives you fewer junk cards than Cache, but the junk itself—a semi-Survivors—is presumably substantially worse to have than Copper. Worse enough to bring the cost down to $3 instead of $5?)
Yes, if I ever print these cards to playtest I'd cost Mould and Property 4$, and I'd also consider letting Property gain up to 4 (and reversing the conditional: "you may gain an estate. If you did, gain a card costing up to 4$").
Yet, I decided to post them in the original version. :) (I still failed to cost Property right)

1084
I nominate "Cheese Destruction" as the expansion name.  Lmao.

++?????++ Out of Cheese Error. Redo From Start.

(not sure if anybody will get the reference, but whatever.)

1085
So, you could run this on any text?  So I could, like, input all my F.DS posts, and use this to create all my future posts?

There was something around some time ago that let you do this for your FB posts. Mine were a hilarious fantasy/political hybrid (sadly they also often were lame bi/trilingual combinations).
You'd need a script to scrape them off the "my posts" and remove quotes images and links, done that you're good.

1086
I gave art to some of these: (I'm pretty bored today)

Edit: whoops, wrong cost for property. Oh well.

I didn't get Prince for free. I'm confused.

Quote
In version 1 Victory Tokens were only useful for obtaining Promo cards. Here they are being converted into Promo cards. Version 1 players receive 1 Promo card for every 100 Victory Tokens they had, up until you have all the Promo cards. Standard rounding will apply to fractional amounts. For example, a player with 150 Victory Tokens receives 2 Promo cards while a player with 149 Victory Tokens receives 1 Promo card. Promo cards will automatically be distributed in this order -- Prince, Black Market, Governor, Stash, Envoy, Walled Village -- skipping over any you already have.

So Prince is not included for free in the base set.

For pricing, I'm going to offer Ascension as a comparison.
This is a nice place to start, but I think there is a huge difference between Ascension and Dominion that has nothing (directly) to do with gameplay. Dominion is way more popular. Ascension, although a physical card game originally, is in my mind notable mostly for having had a really good iOS app back when there were a lot fewer high-quality iOS board game apps. Although this is just my perception, the numbers back it up: on BGG, Dominion has 43k ratings, while Ascension has just 7k, almost an order of magnitude less.

For that reason, I don't think Dominion really needs to compete with the likes of Ascension on price. It can compete on having a stronger brand.

But the stronger brand doesn't work on the target audience, which seems to be very casual. (or casual enough as to not strongly prefer playing Dominion over Ascension)

Nice to see my cards inspired you. You have some interesting ideas, although they are hard to evaluate without knowing all of the citizens potentially available. Can you please answer the following questions:

How many different citizens are there? How many of each kind?

As many as I can come up with/whatever would fill out the box. The idea was just giving them different names, but then I thought it would add a bit of variety to give them interesting when trash effects (including different costs) and other things that wouldn't hurt the card. I picked 50 arbitrarily.

Quote
Do you always gain a random Citizen? If so, you'd need to include in the rules outside the cards that the Citizen pile gets shuffled each time before you gain a card from it because of the fact that Citizens are returned to it all the time.
Random Citizen. I'll probably have "return to the bottom of the pile".

Quote
Do Citizens have any other on-play effects or are they "just cantrips"?
They're all "+1 Card, +1 Action" on play.

What I might do is have the text inside the "when trash" be red, for example:
Simon Oliver
Action/Citizen - $3
+1 Card
+1 Action
---
When you trash this, gain a Silver and return this to the bottom of the Citizen Pile

And then a card, like, for example
Celebration
Treasure - $5
Worth $2
Choose one: Gain a Citizen, or perform the red text of a Citizen you have in play.

However it took me a while to think of that card, which makes me think that leaving them as when trash effects is probably fine. I just have other cards with the "red text" idea.

Quote
We need concrete examples of Citizens with all their effects and cost. You wrote their cost may vary from $2 to $6 which suggests there's a huge power gradient among different Citizens. I don't think this a good idea at all because it will make Citizen-giving cards (should be a type for that) extremely swingy. Rather keep them roughly equal in power.
The cost is for TFBs (particularly retrain). May make the range 3-5. The ones with lower costs will have better when trash effects. They are all meant to be roughly equal.
Celebration could become "Trash a Citizen you have in play. Gain a Citizen."
It's much simpler and mechanically very similar. There's the problem of what kind of celebration kills people, but hey.

Also, are purchases supposed to be carried over? I had half of Prosperity on Goko (because they gave me some free Gokoins for being a tester)... but this says I only have the base set.
Yes they should be carried over (of course!!). EDIT: looking at the new store it seems they're abandoning the old "buy expansions bit by bit" model, and half-expansions do not exist any more. Maybe you can ask for a ducat refund/fix? :/

I looked at the log file in the installation directory, and a quick search for "Accatitippi" gave no results.
matste is probably referring to some other logs. If it's true it is a big one. Now if it turns out that they are also sending/storing passwords in plain text it will be just like Goko's launch.

Well, I must say, the animations aren't even that annoying if you consider I have to click like, two cards to the left of anything to get the app to do what I want. Which is how I ended up opening Fool's Gold-Curse in stead of Fool's Gold-Rebuild.
I won't play anymore until this is fixed.. Anyone else have this problem?

I have never seen that.  You should report it to mf, possibly with screens.
I have, now let's hope this gets fixed..

I had the same problem, and this fixed it:
At the start of the game, select a resolution that has the same height/width ratio as your screen. If you did this right, Rio Grande Games' logo at the loading screen should feature a round sun, and buttons will work properly.

I played a couple of games vs AI (that's how I usually play) and it worked smoothly. No annoying animations whatsoever, no sparkles. I'm not sure what people are referring to. The cost increase is a huge bummer.
AI felt a lot more stupid than usual.

EDIT: oh, and Salvager is sorely missed. But as long as it will come later, it's good. I didn't expect to immediately switch to 2.0 anyway.
EDIT2: a second kingdom included some really sparkling cards. I agree that it's really unnecessary, and a bit annoying (in particular the sparkles going from a played card to all the cards in the Supply). Still reading the comments here I was expecting much worse. I'm a slow player, and that might be a factor.

Action, $90

Each player gains +2 Disappointment

This card really needs *a lot* more work. And at 90$, it's crazy expensive.

Well, I've edited TVTropes before so I guess I could go in there and stir things up. Chapel, Prizes, anything else we need to "clarify"?
I'm not sure about all the stuff about the history of the randomizer deck. It looks like a bunch of pseudo facts, but maybe that's all somewhere in the Secret Histories. And I'm not sure about making the BM deck using the randomizers. Is that a thing? I thought most people made a brown bordered randomizer deck. (I use the randomizers, but fetch a brown bordered card when somebody buys from BM).
And saying that the biggest "escalation" introduced by Intrigue is Harem is quite sad. It might be true, but it is still sad.

It looks like you found hard mode. :P

There must be something wrong, because when I go to playdominion.com I find the same old website and a noticeable lack of big green buttons. Or of big buttons of any other colors, for that matter.

1096
Giraffe had me dying omg.  Do more of those.  Property also is a pretty nifty idea.  A Village-Workshop with a drawback of gaining a junk card (potentially).
As written, it would have to cost 3, though, which is strictly better than Village. Maybe it would work if the gain was mandatory. Village Rats! :D
Or you have to make it a full-workshop (gain up to 4$).
These are as fun as the really bad cards ideas! Want moar!

I love how it has produced essentially one of the most commonly proposed fan cards, Giraffe. It sort of synergizes with Menagerie, which is cute.

Actually, I find it much more annoying when I'm playing an engine and my opponent plays three or four of these in a turn. Sure, it's nice that I get the extra card to choose from, but if I end up drawing a nice engine component that I can't keep in my hand (since my other three cards are also crucial), the rest of my deck ends up being bad cards, since my good cards got cycled into my discard. I know this doesn't always happen, but it sure can, and it's very annoying.

I see how it can be annoying, but it's just as likely as the opposite, you sifting through all the junk and getting a deck composed of good cards, with an a hand capable of drawing it all.

The logician's wife gives birth to a child. Still trying to catch her breath, she asks him: "Is it a boy or a girl?" He replies: "Yes."

I actually do that all the time.

Wow, you must have a lot of children.
