Two crashes today.  I've been restarting the machine to deal with it, but I think we might be in for some instability.

I <3 Race for the Galaxy.  It's a bit hard to get into, but it's definitely deep, repayable, and good for 2.

To be honest, I think Essen kind of sucks.

WBC is where it's at.

Rock-Paper-Scissors is really boring, that's all I have against it.

Let me tell you, it's way better than Rock-Paper-Rock.

FWIW, he takes a very anti Sirlin stance.

General Discussion / An interesting article against asymmetry in game design

Mostly a mindless link dump.  I personally love asymmetry, so it's interesting to see someone write passionately against it.

Maybe goko should just hire ragingduckd?

You need to get the time limit right, certainly.  I am a bit skeptical that the time depends that much on kingdom.  Sure, sometimes it might force you to make a poorly considered move, but on the other hand, it guarantees your opponent will be making steady progress during his turn.

Of course, I'd love to see it implemented and failing first before seeing it face the tons of hypothetical corner casing that our form so dearly loves to provide.

Put a time limit per turn and give some excess time budget for occasional hard decisions.  Make time a resource to be managed.  The problem is not that your opponent is looking at the log, it's that they are playing slowly.

Real life Dominion sucks compared to a well implemented online version, IMNHSO.

The threads that you visit when the server are up work, and the threads that you visit when the server is down don't :P.

I don't want to bikeshed too much, just avoid potential future drama.  Maybe Goko Expand is a nicer name for the extension?  You don't really want to make enemies out of Goko..

The other thing to consider is that if you are dumping data an HTML table, it's really easy to provide options to sort by various columns.  I used this sorttable Javascript library a lot in councilroom.

Maybe the best answer to "which way to sort" is "who cares? Just click whichever column you like".

All models are wrong, some models are useful.

Trying to get a probabalistc model out of goko ratings isn't worth the trouble.  Just count matches where TrueSkill ranks A > B, and Goko ranks B > A, and then see who actually wins.

Do you have historical logs of the goko ratings?  You could compute how often TrueSkill and Goko are right at predicting the winner of games.

I love the obsession with getting better in this community, don't get me wrong.  We are for the most part all Spikes.  We want to win.  We play to win.  Winning, winning, winning!  But there is still room for Johnny and Timmy in Dominion, and I don't think we should necessarily look down on them.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: WW's Power Rankings
« on: July 01, 2013, 12:58:59 am »
This reminds me of the baseball sabermetrics idea of "Wins Above Replacement". I wonder if it would be possible to do something similar for Dominion in a statistical way?

Get some expert equally skilled players.  Tell one ahead of time that they won't be able to buy card X.  Let the other play as normal (Indeed, its best if the "control" player doesn't even know there is a weird experiment going on).  Measure the difference in winning percentage between the players as a function of the disallowed card.

Unfortunately, people probably won't let you do this to them enough to get a good data set.  So replace them with a solid AI ;).

We also got a warning that our virtual machine was doing lots of disk I/O.  They happen occasionally.  Maybe someone who is a better sys admin could figure out the cause, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a poorly written web crawler hammering our site.

I mean, as long as the time between games is much less than the time in games, the model will be fine.

If it's not the case, then what are you paying Goko for? :P
