General Discussion / Anyone into outdoor sports?
« on: March 27, 2015, 03:47:35 pm »
I know this probably isn't the likeliest of places. I actually spend way more time climbing and training for rock climbing than playing dominion, which is probably why my ratings are so mediocre. Just wondering if there are any other outdoor enthusiasts lurking in these virtual caves?

Recession is only 8 highways away from reading, Play an action card from your hand twice. Trash it. Gain a province.

Dominion Articles / Re: Hunting Grounds

I'm talking about the new one. What I found helpful about both of them was mainly the comparison to smithy: one card more is actually a substantive improvement in card draw, not a marginal one. Many people may know that intuitively, I did not. FWIW, I read every single card page on the wiki before i read a single post on this forum, and used that info to break into competitive playing. It was particularly helpful for figuring out how to use cards on goko that i still do not own irl. So i imagine that a few paragraphs about this card that amount to: yes, it really is that much better than smithy will be helpful to someone who has little or no experience playing with it yet. And, those people absolutely are looking at the wiki in order to try to quickly catch up on a lot of info so that they can play competitive random games. So I guess to me that is enough reason to post it. Also, yes, the new one is better, because it gets to the point and doesn't have misinformation or get bogged down in edge cases.

I will sign up. Iguana Iguana. I am U.S. / Eastern. I would like to play as high ranked as possible, but that may well be the lowest rank possible too :)

I for one will be happy to edit back in the phrase 'smithy on steroids' as soon as it is posted. That way, you don't need to take the heat for it. But seriously, post the article. It was helpful to me.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Really Low Iso Level Players on Goko
« on: March 23, 2015, 05:31:40 pm »
Actually, I'm pretty new. I've played I think less than 200 games on goko and my rating hovers between 4200 and 4700 right now. But my iso rating is something ridiculous like -54. So yes i definately wondered about this too.

Actually, you are level 14 with 107 games played. Your uncertainty (3-sigma) is 13.89, which is only slightly higher than the practical minimum of 10. 100 games is enough to get a reasonably low uncertainty. You are probably recalling a time when you had many fewer games. "Iguana Iguana" here: http://www.gokosalvager.com/leaderboard

Thanks for the correction. When I look at my own stats by clicking my avatar in the multiplayer area of GoKo, it still reads -54, which is why I thought that. Obviously my Iso rating is not updating properly with my other rating. Thanks for showing me where I can get the correct information.

A variation i like to play once in a blue moon is called BMU (black market ultimate) where you take 100 randomizers from the randomizer stack and put them in ten stacks of ten face down with only the top card revealed. Now you're not playing dominion, you're playing ascension with dominion cards and rules. Pro tip: this does not make dominion better, it is hard to make dominion better, but it does do hilarious things to card power and balance.

Solo Challenges / Baronic Megaturn Challenge
« on: March 23, 2015, 12:51:00 pm »
Ok, so things are about to get totally baronic.

Here is the goal: Play 8 Barons in one turn, producing 12 coin from each baron, and use the money and buys they produce to buy 8 colonies and a province in order to end the game in a single megaturn.

Here are the restrictions:

While you are setting up for the megaturn, you can only produce coin to buy cards by using your starting coppers and by playing baron.

This means you cannot gain copper, silver, gold, or platinum (but you are free to keep and play your starting copper for as long as you want.)

You also cannot gain any kingdom treasures, any actions that produce coin or coin tokens, or cards that reduce the cost of other cards.

You cannot put baker on the board in order to use the starting the coin token.

You cannot use coppersmith to improve the value of your copper.

Cards that remodel other cards or gain cards outright are acceptable as long as they do not also fall into one of the banned categories.

Counting House and Apothecary are okay, as are moat, scout, spy, and pearl diver.

PM me your logs, and I will post a winner after I stop receiving submissions. If you want to submit a log but don't think you will get a chance right away, let me know and I will keep the challenge open for you. Have fun!

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Easy Puzzles
« on: March 19, 2015, 01:39:19 pm »
Easy, because you zapped all your starting coppers into silvers (and also, hopefully, your estates into duchies and your opponent's estates into curses.) The most you can have turn 2 is 10 on a 4/10 split.

FWIW, I just read the article currently on the main post and thought, wow, what a coherent, helpful article. I had no clue it was such a community effort until reading the rest of the thread. Also, I really like Stef's 20 summation. I wonder how many cards you could do that with.

Dominion Articles / Re: Most skilled card in Dominion?
« on: March 19, 2015, 10:05:00 am »
I think a lot of the alt vp cards tend to add complexity and therefore can be played skillfully. Fairgrounds stands out, but also vineyard and silk road, which both require deck tracking, and the potion cost for vineyard adds a lot of complexity to that card. Duke seems simpler, and gardens simpler still. But if multiples of these cards show up on one board and they also have support, then i'm often at a loss for what to do.

Solo Challenges / Re: The big build-up
« on: March 19, 2015, 09:18:59 am »
If you wanted to, you could also add to the beginning: Play a stonemason, trashing a card to gain two workshops. Of course that makes everything longer and more complicated. I like how the challenge limits a lot of what you can add to the kingdom. I think I will give it a try tonight.

Sea Rat - Action Attack Rat - cost 4. Gain a Sea Rat. Each other player discards the top card of their deck and gains a drowned rat.             Drowned Rat - Action Rat Curse - cost 0. Trash a card from your hand that is not a drowned rat (or reveal a hand of all drowned rats.) Then gain a drowned rat, putting it on top of your deck. Worth -1 VP

I always assumed everyone listens to the default music provided by goko. I mean, its pretty hard to top that kind of quality.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The "Dominion Middle Finger"
« on: March 10, 2015, 12:45:31 pm »
This doesn't necessarily fit the thread title, but an oddly common thing is people buying coppers on their game-ending turns (without a reason to, i.e., Goons, Gardens). Maybe buying one copper isn't much more work than clicking "End Turn", but people with three extra buys will buy three coppers. It's not a big deal, and I don't assume any malice, but just, why? What gives people the urge to do that?

To me, even if I'm playing a bot, it's more satisfyingly pure to "End Turn" it as soon as there are no more points to be had.

I may have started this - I used to do it a lot, the 'victory copper', and my reasoning at the time was that, well I kind of like copper, and then I wanted to mess with Council Room statistics, back when that was a site.

And if he does it, we all do it. QED

The first time i ambasssored a colony to someone to lower the colony pile, i forgot that i needed to return 0 in order to actually lower the pile and ended up returning a colony to effectively pass it to them, keeping the pile the same. I still won the game, so pretty sure I ended up looking like a bit of a jerk in that game.

Thanks for the help. There was actually a point where I could not navigate these forums, so I'm glad to be figuring things out. I am interested but a bit intimidated by the league. As for the forum games, isn't someone going to come by and warn me about the people who want me to join them?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Lack of quality posts
« on: March 07, 2015, 09:02:47 am »
I will agree though with some of the other posters that it is very intimidating to jump into this community. Part of that is simply that dominion is a serious game where a lot of serious thinking can go on. It is natural then that the community who takes a serious strategy game very seriously would be somewhat intimidating to join in on.
