Dominion: Adventures Previews / Re: Adventures card quality
« on: May 21, 2016, 10:10:33 am »
My cards are sleeved. I can easily tell when someone is drawing an Adventures card.

There must be huge variation from set to set then, because mine are sleeved and I can't even tell when I'm drawing Adventures cards.

I must say, Donald, you have really disappointed me personally with this card, for the following reasons.

1.  It adds too much simplicity to the game I fell in love with.
2.  Unlike all of the other cards in the game, this one clearly can't be shuffled by itself
3.  I can't overpay for it with Embargo tokens and therefore gain a sweet roll
4.  The wings on that bird are clearly too small to support its weight

Oh yeah, *ducks*

Others probably have more details, but here's what I been told about these things.  There hasn't been a fixed printing of Adventures yet because the earlier printings haven't sold out.  It may be some time before there is such a printing because a lot of people made the same buying decision you did and, as a consequence, there are still plenty of copied available.  Kind of a catch-22 there.  With Empire, steps have indeed been taken to address the previous quality problems so it shouldn't be a issue.

Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Empires Bonus Preview #5: Castles

Rules question: With Black Market, can only 1 Castle be in the deck? And how do you choose which one?
Same question for the split piles,  can you have either of the cards in the BM deck, and how would you choose it?

I believe Donald's ruling for this so far has been: do what you want. Which is a fine ruling, I think.

What I envision Black Market doing is creating a Black Market supply.  For each card in the Black Market deck, there is a pile in the Black Market supply that is set up just as it would have been in the real supply.  So, for example, if Castles were in the Black Market supply, Humble Castle would be on top just like in the real supply.  Since each pile in the Black Market supply can be accessed only once, the top card (Humble Castle) is the only one that can ever be purchased.

Of course, that's just my logic for figuring out how I would want to handle this in my IRL games.  Until this question is answered by the online version, I guess anything goes.

This Donald fellow must be a popular guy.

No kidding. And gaining respect like he's the creator of Dominion or something.

Well I strongly suspect that most of the guests were Redditors since this was posted to /r/dominion. And then somebody made a highly upvoted post on the thread that was just a copy-paste of the DXV so you didn't have to click through to f.ds. Not sure what yo conclude there.

Adam and WW's cult followers, no doubt. This site is the real OG, and they are all heretics.

I'm actually none of those things, good or bad.  If someone accesses Reddit on a phone app (like I do most of the time), following a link to a forum which wasn't designed/optimized for mobile viewing can be slow and difficult to read.  I was just being considerate.  Also, I did quote what I copy-pasted so it was clear that it wasn't my content.  I guess I could have given it a heading like "from forum.dominionstrategy.com" or something.

I mean it's an Action-Treasure.  If it's in play, it's an Action in play for Peddler.  It's also a Treasure in play for Bank.

I dont see why it should have different effects if played differently.. 'Played as an Action' or 'Played as a Treasure' doesn't make sense to me.  Though, could behave differently whether it's your Action or Buy phase, that's fine.  But either way, you played both am Action and Treasure, either during your Action phase or during your buy phase.  Counts for all the things it counts for.

If you play it during your Action phase and it, say, doesn't give money, what's the problem?  Still a Treasure played.  HoP doesn't give money.

Of course, I'm just speculating.  I just don't see an issue with that behavior.

The parts of your post that I emphasized are what make the most sense to me.  If you play it during your action phase you get the action benefit and the treasure benefit.  If you chose not to use it during your action phase, but only in your buy phase, then you only get the treasure benefit.  Either way the card would always be both an action and a treasure for the purposes of things like Peddler and Bank.  So the result of playing it may change depending on when it is played, but its type never changes.

I don't see a huge benefit to behave differently on different phases.  There's nothing wrong with the version Seprix proposed.  You play it, draw 2 cards, continue with your buy phase as normal.  You're already used to playing and resolving one Treasure at a time.  Even if it gives +Actions, that makes a difference for, e.g., Diadem.

What if you don't want to draw?  Now you have an action/treasure card in your hand that can be used as neither.

EDIT: Obviously, if the action doesn't involve draw, this isn't an issue.

The bidding thing - this is one of the aspects of Empires that I'm not too fond of. Something I love about Dominion is how equal AND isolated the play is. Sure there are attacks and stuff, but everyone has access to exactly the same things. And there's no direct competition for resources other than pile control. So there are parts of Empires that get rid of that, and bidding is one of them.

I know I just need to wait until it's released before making any judgments, but that sounds really bad.  I'm imagining a scenario where I begin my turn intending to gain card X, but fail to because I get outbid for it.  Unless I am in control of if/when bidding occurs on my turn, I just don't know if I'd care for that.

But even if it is it will likely only be on a few cards or events and you can always just not play with those cards. Like Donald always says (roughly) "there need to be hated cards if there are going to be loved cards"; some people may like the bidding and some may hate it but there are plenty of cards to play with if you hate it!

Except that I am a huge fan of full random, with all cards available kingdoms.  I would have to hate a card really bad to ban it.  In any event, I'm encouraged by some of the other comments about bidding, so open mind and all that.  Besides, even if I don't like bidding, I'm sure I'll dig everything else about this expansion, just as I have with every other one.

I'm a bit worried about the bidding thing, I ususally don't like bidding.

Me too, but it depends on what kind of bidding.  Bidding money for something against other players, like an auction, sounds bad.  Bidding that you can accomplish some feat, like in spades, is maybe not so bad.

I think I would have opened Silver/Silver as well to get to Cultist as quick as possible.  Then a potion to get a couple Golems, followed by a few more Cultists and a Remodel.  If my deck got really junked up, maybe a Forager.

Hi all,

I'm not entirely new here.  I've posted a few times and have been lurking for quite a while.  I've never introduced myself though and that's just rude, so...

I've been playing for a few years, almost exclusively IRL (I've played a grand total of 1 online game).  I was introduced to the game by a co-worker who wanted to start a weekly gaming group at work.  I didn't even play board/card games at the time, but it sounded like fun.  We played two games of Dominion at our second meeting and I was hooked.  I bought the base game on the way home from work that very night and played another game with my wife.  She also fell in love with it and we bought all of the expansions within 6 months.  Three years later I'm still playing 6-12 games a week (with my wife and others) and I'm not tired of Dominion in the least.

I think I'm a decent player, but I've never tested myself online to see where I really stand.  I do know that I still learn new things about the game regularly so I've got plenty of room to grow.

Anyway, I think this is a great online community and I look forward to being part of it.  I don't typically post a lot, but when I do, I'll try not to be stupid.  No promises though.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Creating Dominion

Great news, I am super pumped and will gladly throw $3 (or however much) a month at a subscription online Dominion service that's actually reliable and run by people who understand security and are good at their work.

Actually it doesn't matter that much if it costs $3 or $4; the big gap is to $5, which most players can't reach in the beginning.

How do you know if there isn't much difference between $3 and $4. $4 is another $12 a year that everyone would be paying for the service. That adds up.

$3 Dominion implementations tend to be just as good as $4 Dominion implementations, so people will often spend $4 or a $3 implementation anyway.

That's generally true, but I'm not sure about it in this case.  I just don't know if Dominion implementation is strong enough to justify $4.  Maybe someone can run some simulations and see.

Can that box contain all cards?

Yes, I had all currently published cards, including three sets of treasure and victory cards, and all of the mats and tokens in it.  I estimate that Empires would have fit as well, but I would have had to take out either the mats and tokens or extra treasure and victory cards.  I opted to go ahead and find a new solution that would fit everything including Empires and have room to spare for more expansions.  Now I use the below case with 2 modified 3200 count cardboard storage boxes inside.

Does anyone sell these on ebay or etsy? I'm not handy and would prefer to purchase something, though I would be willing to give making this a shot.

Although you will want to change the latches to something more sturdy after you buy it.

I suggest replacing not only the latches, but the hinges and handle as well.  I had problems with all three when I used this case.

I went to the copy shop today and got a couple of sheets of various sizes of cardstock. The "110 lbs" cardstock seemed sturdy enough, though maybe the tabs might wear down after a while, I'm not sure...

In any case, I measured the thickness of these vs. the ones I currently have and found it should give me room for 220 more cards. This is sort of a conservative guess so hopefully it will be a little more in practice, and I may have a little bit of wiggle room.

Over the next couple of weekends I'll get the dividers printed and start the very long process of cutting them out -- I want tabbed dividers so there will have to be a lot of cutting done by hand...

Can you laminate them to cut down on wear?  Or would that add too much to the thickness?  You can buy sheets of laminate paper for pretty cheap.  Though being married to a teacher might give you laminater machine privileges.

These are good questions that I do not know the answers to. I will find out.

Actually, check out Reply #37, above.  I answer both of those questions.

My dividers are on heavy card stock printed from Sumpfork's tab generator
http://domtabs.sandflea.org/
This actually looks pretty nice. I will have to do some experimentation on these -- last I saw this generator it didn't support vertical dividers so this solution is something new to me that might work well. I may be able to get away with experimenting with different types of paper to see what's the thinnest thing I like, then trying to calculate how much space that will save me. While I'm reluctant to change my dividers again, it's mostly because I spent a ton of time on the ones I currently have, which isn't actually a good reason. The PlexiGlas isn't perfect and having opaque, tabbed, double-sided dividers might be a good thing.
I use these and absolutely love them.  If you have a bit of money to spend, just have them printed on regular paper and then laminated.  They hold up well, but aren't too thick.  Otherwise, using unlaminated card stock is a good second option.  My first set was on card stock and held up fairly well.

I could probably make Empires fit in my Hobby Lobby box by removing my third set of base cards and/or the mats, but 1) I'd rather keep everything together and 2) if there's ever another expansion after Empires there would just be no way.  So I've started looking into a briefcase solution.  I envision something about 5 x 2 inches larger with custom cut foam inside.  That would give me one more row than the Hobby Lobby box and each row would be a bit longer.

121
Thank you for the heads-up! I've never tried carrying the case like a briefcase. In fact, I haven't moved it away from my usual gaming area. There seems to be some space for cards to move sideways if the case is held like that. I'm afraid I will ruin the organization or worse, the cards themselves. Do you also have that problem? My friend suggested putting a foam-like material on top so that the cards don't move around.

I've carried mine like a briefcase since I got it and I've never had any problems with cards getting mixed up or damaged inside the case.  In fact, I once had it standing upright in the front seat of my car when I had to slam on the brakes.  The box tipped over and slid onto the floorboard, upside-down.  I feared a catastrophe, but not a single card was out of place.  I was amazed.

122
After examining the box in more depth, I've come to the conclusion that it was the weak latches combined with slightly bent hinges that caused mine to open.  So I'll be replacing all of the hardware.

123
Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up.  For no reason I can figure out, my case began popping open yesterday.  Yesterday afternoon and again this morning the latches popped and spilled all my cards (all sets) out.  When it happened yesterday I assumed that I just hadn't closed it properly, but after the second time...

Perhaps it's the extra weight of the latest expansion or maybe I have a defective case, but whatever the case, be warned.  I'll be replacing the latches with a more secure style.

124
First, What I would really like with the black market deck is for it to be completely virtual. What I mean is that if black market is in the game, I'd rather not go through the effort of setting up the deck. I'd rather have a button on the app I could push whenever someone plays the card, which would list the 3 possible options they could purchase. We would then go fish in the box for only the cards actually purchased.

I believe minusik has mentioned elsewhere that this is on the road map.  I agree that this will be a great feature, once implemented.
