Action - $4

+2 Cards
+1 Buy

----

When you gain or trash this, you may trash a card from your hand.

---

Basically Chapel is skippable when tempo is super important (think like a rush to a megaturn) and when you can trash while doing other things. Easiest way to do this would be Masquerade, Remake, etc. but those all already exist; "draw and trash" and "trash and gain" respectively.

Opening this / Silver gives you phenomenal odds of hitting $5 (need the sombrero to miss it). You can buy more copies to thin more, and if you have too many you can trash one with the other and still trash another card. For a board with lots of Highways or Bridge Trolls or other hyper explosive payload, you can probably skip Chapel.

With trashing, +2 Cards terminal draw is better than its given credit for, and of course the +Buy makes it easier to buy more.

Play five cards, play King's Court, play Leprechaun?

78
Also, when you trash this, play it.

Why?

So that you can't stop the trashing by trashing it from play, by using something like Bonfire.

You can't anyway.

Yeah, the "this stays in play" clause is separate from the "rest of the game" effect clause on Hireling and Champion. They stay in play for tracking reasons. And in Hireling's case, to prevent you from stacking the effect every shuffle.

Edit: which means technically you can Throne a Hireling and then free up the Throne Room by trashing Hireling with Bonfire. Now I really want to play a game with KC, Hireling, and Bonfire, just to see how many cards I start my turn with by the end of the game. It's so fun to just mess around with silly concepts like that. I hope the new promo is on the unusual side. Not that there's not already plenty of messing around material in Dominion.

You don't even need Bonfire. Just use Procession instead of Throne Room, and Lurker to get them back.

Help! / Re: Cathedral game
« on: May 26, 2019, 12:44:52 pm »
You definitely are less likely to play Dukes on a Cathedral board. You didn't make a mistake buying Cathedral, but you don't want to play a slog immediately after buying Cathedral...

You can definitely build an engine here. You even have extra buys and start of turn sifting to make it so you can keep trashing Copper in the late game. Journeymen for draw, a pair of Dungeons for start of turn insurance, Mountain Village for Village, Merchant Guild for payload.

You shouldn't take too many turns to pile Provinces with this board, so I would absolutely skip Duke. Farmer's Market doesn't accomplish much either.

80
Not that tricky to see but Castles + Fairgrounds is neat
Also Black market + Fairgrounds. It depends on the size of the black market deck, but it's still a lot more then without Black Market

Would go so far as to say Fairgrounds is never wrong on a BM board.

What happens when you try to? I haven't had issue with this lately, though occasionally (1 in 20 games) the app will crash if I click the chat text. Force quit fixed it.

Game Reports / Re: Bishop is underrated
« on: April 28, 2019, 09:59:16 pm »
Going down in the rankings doesn't mean it's useless. It's just a payload card first and a trashed second, and as payload it's often kind of cumbersome.

Being ranked relatively low in the Qvist list doesn't mean the card can't be the difference maker in a kingdom. It just means it usually isn't, which is the case with Bishop.

For some reason this does not apply to hands. You can gain a card with Transmogrify (or Mine if you like), physically shuffle your hand around, then react with a Watchtower to trash the gained card.

What I posit is that "top of discard pile" and "rest of discard pile" are different locations WRT lose-track.

They should be! You can't look through your discard pile, so by the letter of the rules you can't verify if any particular card is in the discard pile, or where it is, without being granted the ability to look through it.

I don't know if this actually matters regarding lose track, but intuitively it seems to be part of the justification to me.

Carve - $4

Trash this or a card from your hand. Gain a card costing exactly $1 more than it.

--

When you trash this, +1 Action.

----------

"It's better than Feast!" - not quite, shut up. "It's worse than Remake!" - not quite either, and don't we want most cards in between those two?

If Fool was three Boons as a one-shot, wouldn't that be a little too similar to Pixie's one Boon twice as a one-shot?

nah, Pixie is a cantrip you can optionally blow up; the described card is a terminal you blow up to get a random variety of effects. They'd play totally differently.

This might be the only card bug anyone brings up that I've actually run into unintentionally in the course of an online game. I sorta hope it's a quick fix - a lot of the other bugs are relatively obscure and hard to trigger, but this happens basically any game with both cards in it.

88
Haven | Leprechaun

Guarantee a Lep in your hand during your 7th card play (EDIT: 6th card play, as Haven counts as 1). Get 2 Leps in such a game, to set one aside every turn.

Travelling Fair can also kinda sorta be used for the same.

I mean, there's always Scheme.

Rules Questions / Re: Ambassador + Beggar + Lighthouse + Triumph
« on: March 30, 2019, 12:33:07 pm »
Sorry for even bringing this up, since it will almost never happen... Say you play a Beggar to gain Coppers to your hand, play Ambassador to return those Coppers to the supply but then your opponent has Lighthouse so they don't gain anything, then you buy the Copper back and then buy Triumph. Since you gained the same card twice in one turn, does it count once or twice for Triumph VP?

Twice. Doesn't matter what the number of physical cards in your deck is at the end of the turn, or which copies of the card were or were not gained, simply the number of times you gained a card.

91
5/2 on a Cathedral board.

markus' stats show that players with a 5/2 on a Cathedral board have a 53% win rate, exactly the same as their win rate on boards without Cathedral.

I'm not sure you're reading the chart correctly (but maybe I'm not either) - seems to indicate a modest 5% decline in win rate?

As much as they were two pages ago?

Hey, this is the thread where your posts aren't supposed to be useful.

Hey, maybe he found them useful in a second game. I think you technically get to post here once per time you find the interaction useful.

(Please don't actually do this)

Rules Questions / Re: Throne Room / Mining Village
« on: March 26, 2019, 08:45:19 am »
Effects described with "for" or "if you do" are conditional on the successful execution of the thing before it.

"You may trash this for $2", only gives you two if you did the trash this successfully.

No other effects of cards are conditional on following other instructions or the card being in play (excluding "while this is in play", obviously). So even though Feast or Mining Village are in the trash the second time Throne Room plays them, you still do what they say, except for the parts you can't ("trash this") and any effects conditional upon stuff you can't do ("for $2").

Feast's gain is *not* conditional on trashing the card, it is just that trashing the card is not an optional effect (no "you may") so you usually do both. When you can't, it doesn't stop the other effect of gaining a card, since there is no "for" or "if you do".

For your pseudotrashing entry, you might want to clarify that Island sets the cards aside indefinitely. Otherwise, it sounds like everything that sets something aside is pseudotrashing, which is not what I understand the term to mean

Two Havens can pseudotrash one card.

Assuming you draw one of them each turn, and never play them both on the same turn. Does Summon pseudotrash? No, duh. But it still sets things aside.

Psuedotrashing definitely includes things like Archive and Crypt which have the effect of making your deck thinner than it would be. Summon is a completely irrelevant example.

You're naming your card after genocide camps, with a racial slur to boot. Maybe don't "it's just a" to that kind of criticism.

97
I think this rule is incompletely worded, based on what Donald has said. It doesn't mention a card being covered up at all, for one.
The effect expects the card to be on top of the pile. It's not - there's something else above it.

Fair enough. But we do know that a card that is covered and then uncovered is still lost. So being where it expects at the time you try to move it isn't enough; it has to have been in the expected place continually since... hmm, not sure when that duration actually begins. I guess since the card was first referred to by the card doing the effect?

It's not a duration thing - it's just lost if it was ever covered since it was placed in the place that it's looking for it, right?

Game Reports / Re: Is Mint - Fool's Gold actually that good?
« on: March 20, 2019, 11:03:50 pm »
It was for a time one of the best openings you could get. It's still pretty decent now, honestly, you can build into a lot out of it pretty quickly. It's just rare, and the Fools Good rush to Provinces isn't so good these days, so it's best as like a first step into a thin engine with cheap payload.

Gambit

Action - $5

+3 Cards

You may gain a Curse to your hand. If you do, +1 Action.

---

May need to play with balance a bit - this could be better as a $4 with +2 Cards, but I wanna try the 3 cards version first.

BoM doesn't "play itself"
Wrong according to the wiki "other rules clarifications". This is the whole point of this discussion.

That's not how I read it at all. Band of Misfits doesn't have a separate mechanism to "play itself" that every other Action doesn't have. To me the text is just clarifying that Band of Misfits is played, and then the card it is copying is played. Band of Misfits needs to be played (as a normal action) to start executing the instructions of the card (which instruct the player to play it as another action).

Any ruling about BoM moving itself into play should be no different than eg Woodcutter moving itself into play.
