Treasure Trove is much better than it looks. It makes money strategies a lot more viable with even minimal support (Moneylender / Spice Merchant / Forager). Seeing it as worse than Trading Post is just sad.

2127
Is Wine Merchant really that bad? It seems great both as a payload for engines and for spiking provinces when you need to.

i ranked it dead last although in retrospect i shouldve put it above harvest... i dont really get it, it seems like a woodcutter to me.

You buy more than one, and all of them return to your deck with just $2 unspent. It's part of a larger engine payload.

---

Personally I don't understand why Merchant Ship is regarded so poorly. It's solid payload if you have the Actions for it.

You know sometimes folks lament that the quality of Dominion-related discussion has gone downhill on f.DS, but I wonder if a large part of that is that, as you get better at the game, less and less of the discussion is useful to you. I mean a newbie can get all sorts of value out of strategy ideas that we old hands take for granted. So those who have been here awhile are getting fewer strategy-enhancing tips per day and perceive it as a degradation of quality.

Sure, but what's causing the decline in civility?!

People perceiving antagonism where it wasn't intended, being upset, then retaliating. Rinse and repeat indefinitely.

One of the principles Wikipedia users to get people to stop fighting about trivial bullshit is an Assume Good Faith policy, and I think that's a good attitude that posters should carry in to this forum too. Treat each other as if everyone is just trying to help and contribute; even if they're not what's the good in being a snarky asshole back to them?
I don't think Kirian was serious.

I guess that's what I get for assuming good faith :P

In all seriousness I have no idea what is being referenced.

Solo Challenges / Re: Golden Deck for Colony
« on: November 19, 2015, 10:11:07 am »
Once set, Your starting hand is:
Hamlet, Native Village, Colony, 6xFool's Gold

Play Hamlet, Discard Colony for 1 Buy.
Play Native Village, putting Colony on your mat.
Play 6 Fool's Gold for 21 coins.
Buy, Colony, Traveling Fair, 2xExpedition

Repeat

I don't think this works because Events are neither Colonies nor cards costing up to 2 coins.

I feel like stash is the worst, and it's not that close. It's still not even good with Chancellor/Scavenger/Messenger, and the only other time when I'd buy it is when I'm playing a super lame big money strategy where the alternative is silver. The others all have weird cases when they shine, whereas stash is like nearly adventurer's level of never being good.

I might put Royal Seal as the second worst. $5 silvers are just plain bad, while {Cache, Explorer, Mandarin, Contraband, Venture, Harvest} can at least make more money and be useful in weird scenarios.

I'll buy Chancellor / Stash as not being stellar, but Scavenger / Stash is quite possibly the easiest and one of the fastest golden decks to set up, and it can easily end the game very quickly. That doesn't make Stash good, but dismissing Scavenger / Stash off hand like that is a decision that absolutely will lose you games.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Recommended boards
« on: November 18, 2015, 10:31:37 am »
Queen of Tan is a great but tricky board since you basically want a little of everything. Royal Carriage, Ratcatcher, and Duplicate are the most important of the top row and should be bought early. You want Duplicate to pick up a ton of Heralds to propel your engine; I don't like using Coin for a village here when you can just do a bunch of Heralds and a few Journeymen. I think you eventually want to use Pathfinding on either Herald or even CSM - making Pathfinding target CSM turns it into a $2 Baker / Market hybrid which is really great payload. This would be fun to play a few times.

I feel for Bag of Gold. Nobody wants it  :-[
Would Bag of Gold not be junk if it put the gold into your hand? Or gave two golds?

The reason it's worse than Diadem for me is that Diadem going to your hand sometimes lets you spike a Province that turn, but Bag of Gold really doesn't. By the time you would get it, the Duchy is more valuable almost all the time.

2137
Followers or Steed first is board and deck dependent. If you have a thin enough deck that you can win another tournament the same turn, obviously you go full Steed ahead, or if you're playing a board with other curse or discard attacks etc.

The biggest shock to me here is that the guy who filled his list out backward thought Diadem and another card were worse than Bag of Gold.

Feedback / Re: Dead Accounts
« on: November 17, 2015, 10:26:42 am »
If I left a forum for a year and found my account was randomly deleted just to make a user list slightly less annoying to view, I'd be pretty upset.

Let 'em be, they aren't doing any harm.

Quarry is essentially a super ferry that makes all actions $2 less. With +Buy the card is a beast.

Or without +Buy, it's Gold that only works on Actions. Good for hitting 7s, but a Silver instead would have hit $5 most of the time anyway. The thing about Ferry is that it doesn't take up any hand or deck space, so it is good even in the absence of +Buy; Quarry basically requires it to be worth it.

Is Roller Coaster Tycoon old yet? What about SimTower? Between these two I probably sunk 500 hours of my childhood into these.

Adam putting port below farming village makes me sad. :-\
Code: [Select]
18.) Farming Village   [X]
20.) Port   [X]

I try not to look too much into the really small deviations. The new interface for making lists is really good but it results in a little less precision than a good old-fashioned bucket sort.

Do I think Port is better than Farming Village? Yeah I think I do, and I think it's really close too. There are a lot of little details I would change about my list if I went back and took a close look at it, and a couple of big ones (Quarry and Magpie, anyone?).

But I think we get the big idea from this, and that's the point. The top three $3 cards are Amb, Masq, and Urchin. If you ever see more than one of them on a board then you're not going to this list to decide which one to open, this will just help people realize that those three cards are super-powerful.

For the record, I believe Wandering Minstrel is an order of magnitude better than any other $4 village. Herald doesn't count on that list, but that's because Herald doesn't quite fit the definition I'm looking for here (+1 Card/+2 Actions plus effect). Herald is about as good as WM. Hey look at that I put them right next to each other on my list! Wooo!
Farming Village is Village + small cycling effect.
Port is village + village. Not even close.

Yeah, I would MUCH rather have two vanilla Villages than one almost vanilla Village. Especially given the emergence of card modifying tokens, which Port (and Magpie) obviously love.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: 5 cost treasures
« on: November 16, 2015, 09:03:47 am »
IGG is only fast when both players rush it; otherwise it is very hard to end the game in even 20 turns with it. It actually gives the engine player a little more time if they can trash as they go with Upgrade or Junk Dealer or something.

Relic is a lot better than you realize.

Dominion Articles / Re: Scout 2
« on: November 16, 2015, 08:56:30 am »
How well does Advisor combo with Scout? Advisor decks choke on green, and even failing to hit green Scout rearranges your deck so you can make your Advisor draw a bit better. The main problem I see is that you'd almost never want a Scout instead of another Advisor.

As for the theory card, I think it's a bit broken. If you have under 4 junk cards in your deck, you get to rearrange your entire deck! At least discard the other revealed cards.

I'm one of the guys who put Bridge into the top 10.

I mean, sure it's "just" a payload card. But man how good is it in that case? It's like super good, maybe the best payload you can have, right? If you can play a realiable engine and you could choose between Goons and Bridge you usually don't buy loads of Goons (yeah, sure, like one for the attack) but loads of Bridges. I think that's a big deal and justifies putting it into the top 10.
... it's also good in Slogs.

You don't usually buy loads of Goons? I don't know what Goons games you're playing, but if there's +Actions and enough engine potential to play several terminals, I'm playing several Goons. Not doing that is just leaving points on the board every turn.

I agree that Bridge is good, probably top 20 somewhere between all of its comboes and just the way it supports any engine in general, but it's one of those cards that's decent but sometimes incredible, rather than consistently great.

2146
I should have gotten a screenshot, but I was running an older version of your mod (I think the second latest - just before the hashtag chat auto play commands started), and when my opponent bought cards with Haggler, it would say he bought and gained the cheaper of the two cards, and that he just gained the more expensive card. Pretty minor, but thought I should point it out.

2147
Advisor and Procession moved up to about where I have them. Nice.

I noticed I put Transmogrify in my top 10. That's probably a major overestimation of its rank.

I wouldn't say Transmogrify is top 10, but I think it is underrated in this list. It's a bit of a difficult card to use / grasp, but the ability to switch what engine component you have on the fly is remarkable. A same-turn Remodel that changes your early Silvers into villages and draw cards in the midgame is just so potent.

I think Duplicate is also just a smidge underrated here. It's also a bit hard to get a grasp on, but it really comes in handy.

Otherwise I'm agreeing with the way things are going on this list. Well, Cutpurse is a little low, but I guess the -1 Coin tokens are almost strictly better.

2148
Ugh, all the Adventures cards besides Miser seem lower than I expected. Especially Ranger feels rather strong in engines where you can set your token up...

The thing about Ranger that gets me is that it seems worse to have two Ranger than to have two Smithy on average. I mean if you can ensure the token is flipped favorably at end of turn the initial +5 boost is huge, but in the long run you're getting +2.5 cards per Ranger.

I'm very surprised Mining Village isn't better than Farming Village, and also that Silk Road fell below Gardens.

2149
The extent to which you've gone to state your lack of preference for Farming Village is getting ridiculous. You'd pick up Pearl Diver over it? It literally never does anything? Come on, you have to know both of these are crazy. Even if you have enough villages I would pick up Farming Village over Pearl Diver just for insurance. And you've literally never played a game where you bought Villages when you couldn't trash Estates, or bought Villages in the face of Cursing attacks?

At a certain point you go from rational disagreement to irrational prejudice, and I think when you're saying Pearl Diver is better than a village that guarantees you drawing a useful card, you've gotten to that point. It's a minor benefit, we get it. You don't see this kind of passionate disagreement with the merits of, say, Mining Village, whose benefit is similarly minor (but still important). I don't get why you have such a strong opinion on this.

2150
Caravan Guard isn't BAD, on many boards it's a $3 Peddler and I do like how it is safer in the face of Militia / Goons than other cantrips. It's just a pretty slim benefit that's a bit hard to use and hard to justify gaining if it isn't essentially free (Ironworks, etc)
