The Rules:

The Golden Rule:
This is a game. Everyone who signs up to play must be considerate of each other, never get personal, and focus on having fun. Once the game starts, having signed up is a commitment: inactivity is just as inconsiderate as rude comments.

The Standard Rules:
1. No communication between players outside of the game thread or shared QTs at any time. This includes passing references, jokes, or cases in other games or threads, whether in context or not.
2. If the game thread is locked, do not post. If you are unsure if something is locked, ask the mod by PM.
3. Direct or verbatim quoting of mod-provided information is strictly forbidden. Paraphrasing is okay.
4. Actions with instructions that do not specify a game state will be resolved in the order they are received.
5. All night actions must be submitted within 24 hours of day ending.
6. Players must post once every 24 hours.
7. Do not edit or delete posts, ever. If you need to clarify or correct something, post again.
8. Invisible text, font size less than 10, and spoiler tags are not allowed.
9. Cryptography is not allowed.
10. The time between a lynch being reached and a flip being provided is called twilight. All players may continue posting during this time, including the lynched player.
11. Dead players may not post in thread or QT, except their Role QT. A lynched player is not "dead" until a flip has been provided.
12. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread.

The Voting Rules:
1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambigiuous nicknames are acceptable, or any string that uniquely identifies a user. Note that the point of voting is, in fact, unambiguity, and attempting to make it unclear to other players (or, of course, mods) which user you are voting for is very ill-advised.
2. Unvotes should be in this format:
unvote or Unvote: Playername.
3. Unvotes are not required if changing your vote from one player to another.
4. You may
vote: no lynch.
5. Lynches occur when a simple majority (rounded up) of living players is reached. Once reached, a lynch cannot be undone.
6. If a majority lynch is not reached by the Day's deadline, no lynch occurs.

The Rest:
1. Bold, aquamarine text is reserved for the mod. Players may not use it.
2. If you have an issue or problem with the game, please PM the Mod. Do not post complaints in the game thread.
3. Mods make mistakes - please point them out gently. If they can be corrected, they will. If irreversible, they will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. If a mod error disadvantages one faction greatly, the game may be called off.
5. Ask all questions and make all requests directly to the Mod via PM. Questions deemed as "universal" (defined as questions for which the answers should be available to all players) will be requested to be re-posted in the Game Thread and answered there.
6. One prod will be issued after 48 hours without posting in the game thread. Players are subject to replacement or modkill after one prod.
7. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod.
8. Each player will receive their own QT, regardless of role. Don't quote from it.
9. If the game goes on for 3 days and 3 nights without a lynch or nightkill, town wins.

Deadlines:
7-day Days, 2-day Nights

diplomat, island, moneylender, spice merchant, apprentice, capital, council room, giant, rebuild, torturer; travelling fair, training

a grindfest. i think he played it less than ideally considering the game lasted 24 turns but welp.

by the end of the game the deck compositions were
>me: 3 provinces, 7 (well-trained) diplomats, 2 islands, 1 apprentice, 5 rebuilds, 5 giants.
>otherdude: 9 curses, 11 coppers, 3 estates, 4 provinces, 1 spice merchant, 2 rebuild.

i think he had a third rebuild that i trashed and i definitely wouldn't change the title if not because clickbait and stuff.

game sucked, also. i mean i avoid rebuild whenever possible on principle and because i think some part of my rebuild algorithm is wrong but i would also have avoided the thing i pursued on principle it turns out.

pleasant interaction between giant giving you absurd amounts of money and tfair giving u buys whenever u need buys.

curses are good alt vp. choosing cards to not trash in your deck full of not victory cards is fun.

thank u 4 ur time.

Game Reports / i think fool's gold might suck a little bit
« on: July 05, 2017, 05:57:47 pm »
4932172

table: fool's gold, chariot race, farmers' market, fortress, horse traders, miser, noble brigand, spice merchant, counterfeit, market; advance

back in the day, "fool's gold is there and there are good trashing and good buys but no draw" meant hey! let's go fool's gold guys! but here i almost entirely skipped it (i got 1) and opponent got 9 and i got 8ish chariot races and a bunch of expensive cards, as well as a few farmer's markets, and ended the game with 28 vp tokens and 5 provinces (opponent took 2 duchies several times when there wer 2-4 provinces left because i got a VP advantage very quickly)

a lot of the "please try to get a bunch of these and then end the game" type cards like ill-gotten gains (sort of a while ago), fool's gold (perhaps more recently but it is more relevant in engines, with e.g. wharf) and even rebuild and terminal draw bm have been in decline, not only because engines but also because of the huge inflow of mediocre cards that fit nicely in goodstuff deck — this was a bit of a special case because chariot race sort of specifically counters fool's gold but at the same time the game sort of wasn't close, and i think even something with fortress/market/farmers' markets would have been competitive absent chariot races.

anyone else observe puddles of adventures/empires/even second edition cards beating more classic-y stuff in non-engine games? cantrips + swamp hag or haunted woods comes to mind as well

Non-Mafia Game Threads / criterion game
« on: May 25, 2017, 10:03:34 pm »
it's simple. i have a quality/tendency of a person, you guys guess people/groups of people and i will assign them ratings of 1-10 for this criterion. you use this information to guess what the criterion is.

example:
alice: monica lewinsky
me: probably like 7.5
bob: democrats
me: in general 4
carol: you
me: uhhhh 3
alice: bill gates
me: like, like, like, 10
alice: oh, so like, wealth?
me: yeah!

anyone can guess anything. it's a team effort!

so, what's my criterion?

Deadlines:
1. Days will last seven IRL days.
2. Nights will last two IRL days.

Mafia Game Threads / BM25: pictures mafia (it's a day)
« on: February 16, 2017, 09:15:00 pm »
welcome to BM25: pictures mafia, a hemidemisemiopen bastard setup for 12* players by schadd. it is non-normal, but probably a little less non-normal than you would think. edit from the future: wait jk

spectators: jooph, ants in the skypants, fants, jeb grengus, liopleurodon, wanda and shandra

players:
1. roadruneuer sevintysix sevenoy one
2. dylean frito
3. gork three
4. sand panda
5. charcoal
6. w cluster
7. packet of velfcro
8. clam tassel
9. oops
10. lightly chiseled jalopy
11. lark oil lamp
12. eeek!

rules: pick the rules for a game you like and follow those. if i have to prod or modkill anybody this game, i will personally bring you an envelope full of shame, because i'm not gonna be enforcing things very hard at all. 8 day days, 2 day nights.

the core mechanic of this game is pictures™—in addition to the 11 players who have winconditions and whatnot, the game is also affected by the spectators, who will receive a set of 6 pictures each day that i will ask them to rank, in terms of favoritism. i will take the rankings i receive (as well as my own ranking) and get their average. during the day, in addition to lynches, everyone who can vote will also be able to submit a guess in thread for the spectators' ranking of the pictures (format: picture [name] rank: 1. picture [name] rank: 3 [...] where 1 is the best). these rankings will also be averaged (and i will ask that everyone make an overt “final vote” at some point, because it’s a bunch of bookkeeping; i'm uh not including these in vote counts) and a certain event will occur each day that is more pro-town depending on how close the players' average is to the spectators'.

in short, if you're town, rank the pictures how you think the spectators would. if you’re scum, don't.

n = Σ(abs(spectators' value - players' value))
for n…
=0: town useless PR ⇒ resurrector
=2: town useless PR ⇒ doublewatcher doubletracker
=3: town useless PR ⇒ flute vendor
=4: town useless PR ⇒ dayvig
within [5,6]: town useless PR ⇒ wiretapper
within [7,8]: town useless PR ⇒ hidden doublevoter
within [9,11]: town useless PR ⇒ 1-shot redirecting SK
within [12,13]: scum’s bag of tricks expands…
within [14,15]: some town PR gets bamboozled (e.g. doc ⇒ hidden vig, investigatives are misled)
= 16: scum gets double roleblocker
= 18: scum chooses one of the following each night: each action targets the player above, or the player below, the intended target in the playerlist. if a second 18 is ever attained, scum wins, and it automatically becomes a "flawless win"

resurrector: choose a dead person to become alive again
doublewatcher doubletracker: you both watch and track some target each night. you get the result twice
flute vendor: give a target a 1-shot cop (gives town/not town)
wiretapper: receive the result(s) that a target receives, if any (no context)
double roleblocker: RB that chooses two targets.

town has some number of moderately strong (if unconventional) PRs, and the remaining are useless PRs. our 2 scum have a nightkill, daychat, and a bunch of other things

mafia game of the year
tie, between...

M80: Fruit Ninja Mafia by Roadrunner7671
J Reggie stole town's heart (and their fruit)
with a neat inventor mechanic that allows for ~~extra deception~~, M80 was an overall strong, family friendly classic, featuring strong play on both sides. oh also yuma quit l0l

and

M86: Ghibli Mafia by ashersky
They can't all be the best game ever.
a flawless scum victory, and a gritty one. like all strong scum games, this felt like town lost it for itself—but to suggest that would be to neglect how active the scums really were, and how well they used their various perceptions among the town. as well, the setup in play made an especially nuanced and layered array of claiming and whatnot.

mafia setup of the year
RMM27: Board Game Mafia by Archetype
the scenario I was hoping for could have resulted in enough town confusion to put you back in the game
an exquisite town multiball with an asston of moving parts that somehow wasn't entirely broken, as describes any good RMM. this setup created for tons of exciting fakeclaims n gotchas that match the turbulent landscape of the battle between mass market, ameritrash, and eurogames.

I'm going to try to emulate GLaDOS with the PMs, so if they seem too cruel, please tell me.
Greetings, {subject alignment here}. The enrichment center is pleased to report to you that we have absolutely trounced all competitiors beyond submission, and have emerged the far-and-away victor in integrity of flavor. Please note that this has no bearing on testing; we just thought it might brighten up your otherwise dull and meaningless lives.

town player of the year
gkrieg13
Quote from: gkrieg, at post 50
Ya this doesn't look good for {scumteam, listed in reverse order that they will be lynched} here
if you call em out and then die N1 enough times, you get an award.

scum player of the year
Calamitas
Quote from: calamitas, at lylo
I don't think lynching me is correct here.
earning a permanent slot at "null" in every readlist, Calamitas is accurately described as unreadable—though that doesn't tell the whole story; he is an adept manipulator and tasteful gambiteer.

newbie of the year
SpaceAnemone
Quote from: SpaceAnemone
This reminds me of an interesting life experience :-)
joining Calamitas at "null" is a new compatriot, SpaceAnemone has quickly found their place among our mafia puddle and reminds us that mafia is a fun game that humans play with each other that is, in many cases, massively mathematically deterministic.

most fun to play with
LaLight
Quote from: LaLight
I think I should still look town from this mislynch. After all, I was busy playing every game, reading every game, posting everywhere, knowing every country's cultural references and not sleeping, seemingly
he is pleasant, and industrious.

best performance in a single game
silverspawn, in M79: Sherlock Mafia
What even is silverspawn?
he took advantage of all of his resources ravenously, and he had pretty much everyone in the game on a leash, like, the whole time, while totally diving into the flavor of the game as well.

mod of the year
faust
Quote from: faust
/m50 Yes. /m51 No. /m52 No. /m53 It would go through the bulletproof, but not the redirected jailkeeper. /m54 I can't answer that question. /m57 The serial killer would get endgamed, but only if you roleblocked yourself and rolestopped the SK. /m59 Ha, no.
as strong as his town game, his scum game, and his third party game are, he plays an immaculate mod.

congratulations to our winners!

Let's Discuss ... / let's discuss guilds cards: herald
« on: January 15, 2017, 09:06:40 pm »

brrrr br br brrrrrrrrr
this is one of the best top-of-deck-revealers in dominion, and is also decent if you want to play a bunch of actions. at some point it floated up to the top of our strengtholist, joining the ranks of those like Magpipes and Ree Mack. this is most likely because the new online dominion implementation automatically executes trivial decisions, thus ensuring that a deck of heralds and golems can play itself without needing input.

-how often do you use the bottom part? how often do you forget the bottom part?
-isn't it weird when herald is both the only village and the only draw
-what sorts of payload get the most scrudged up by sometimes playing them out of order?

18
Let's Discuss ... / let's discuss guilds cards: doctor
« on: January 12, 2017, 12:44:46 am »

"...and which disease would you like to name today?"

nothing more effectively captures the spirit of trashing in dominion like inconsistency. trashing with doctor is not the finest art; you generally want to be good at remembering what your junks are, counting your deck, and not having any good cards in your draw pile. indeed, doctor is a strong card that is plagued by how much it sucks, sometimes.

-something something 3/4 or 4/3?
-do you have some sort of rule of thumb for when to name estate over copper? or is that really boring?
-what do you do if you accidentally purchase a doctor and then be distributed ruins?

Let's Discuss ... / let's discuss guilds cards: candlestick mutcher
« on: January 08, 2017, 12:05:13 am »

my face has been feeling a bit melty lately

it's a pretty sensical card. i will usually buy it because i had $2. anything you want to save up for early on, like token events and king's courts & whatnot, is made easier by csm. it's also nice when you want action cards or buys or something.

-what describes a good deck for candlestick makers? other than needing +buy
-when do you open with two of them?
-ew?

Let's Discuss ... / let's discuss guilds cards: butcher
« on: January 01, 2017, 01:54:13 am »

his drudgery was symbolically represented in the amount of times you had to click the coin token button

this is a strong and fun card. it is generally good whenever you have cards that you would like to not have and instead have a different and perhaps (but not necessarily) more expensive card. in terms of brute force, it only produces $2, and thus isn't typically a good sole payload (other than perhaps milling provinces), which makes it more interesting. butcher is neat and goodcool.

-isn't butcher such a cool guy? (yes)
-isn't it so fun when you have some sort of deck that finagles butcher as its payload in conjunction with something else? (yes)
-isn't its interaction with other coin token things (both thematically and otherwise) the funnest thing? (yes)

22
Let's Discuss ... / let's discuss guilds cards: baker
« on: December 30, 2016, 10:57:37 pm »

:c

it makes sense. this card is a decent supplement to pretty much anything that isn't terminal draw bm, it makes things more consistent (both the top half and the bottom half) and i think it generally shines when there aren't any +buys. rarely do you want more than, like, 3 or 4 of them; if baker seems to be good to buy in bulk, you might just want to consider golds.
one might say baker is doomed to be a generally unexciting card.
that's fine; when everything is exciting, it starts to get unexciting (see also: fox dittos)

-is there an exciting baker game? can it be accomplished with less than king's court?
-how often do you tend to use the coin token in the opening?
-lynell ingram

23
Let's Discuss ... / let's discuss guilds cards: advisor
« on: December 29, 2016, 11:12:49 pm »

"i am going to hit you"

one may realize, after playing with advisor a time, that it is at its best when you don't have any especially good cards in your deck. this can be accomplished by having your entire deck be bad or by having it all be okay. you could also have your whole deck be really good but that's hard. the key here, then, seems to be trashing. or purchasing a bunch of bad cards, or gaining them with e.g. workshop.
oo, in fact, workshop has a nice synergy because you can use it to get advisors in addition to your bad cards.

-how long does your opponent get to think about which card to choose before you're allowed to get angry?
-what kinds of changes, in general, might you make to your deck with advisor as draw compared to e.g. laboratory?
-surely advisor is not really good for bm. but, what kinds of conditions might make it good in a goodstuff deck?
