Tournaments and Events / 3p Tournament
« on: April 07, 2017, 04:26:38 am »
Hi guys!

I know how we all love 3p games. Which makes even more of a shame that we don't really have 3p Tournaments! So, here's one.

- It is either for 8 or 16 players. All players will be randomly separated into groups, 4 people in each.
- If we have 8 players, there will be 2 groups, 2 people out of each go into the finals.
- If we have 16 players, 1 person from each group is going to finals.
- There will be 4 matches in each group: 123, 124, 134, 234. The order does not matter.
- Each match is a series of 3 games of Dominion. Each player goes first once.

- In each separate game the winner gains 2 points, the second place gains 1 point, the third place gains 0 points. If there is a tie it resolves by the following scenario:
1) The tie is first and second place: both gain 1,5 points, loser gains 0.
2) The tie is second and third place: Both gain 0.5 points (winner gains 2)
3) The tie is all three players: everybody gains 1 point.

When all the three games are over the following scenario is proceeding:
1) Points proceed to the final Group Table

- If we have 8 players, the ones who are the 1st and second place in each group proceed to finals.
- If we have 16 players, the 1 person from each group who is on the first place is going to finals.

If there is a tie in the final results of the group: the following scenario is proceeded:

1) If 2 and 3 places are split, the two players play 2p game (with lowest seed go first) to determine a winner.
2) If 1, 2 and 3 places are split or all the places are split, the players play the game (with lowest seed go first) to determine a winner.

Finals resolve the same way as a group stage.

If there are any questions left, I am ready to answer them and renew the OP.

This is the third tournament in Monoset series and this one is a Dualset! Dominion double elimination tournament where each Kingdom in a set is played using cards from two expansions. This tournament will run similarly to the first two tournaments, with some rule changes due to changing it to Dualset.

Official Rules:

- 16 (or 32?) players will be admitted into the tournament, in a double elimination bracket seeded by Isotropic rank from Salvager. If Iso rating is unavailable, I will just guess your seed. All players will be seeded somewhere; no seeding will be random if possible.

- Alternates may sign up; they will be substituted into the tournament only during the first round of either the winner's or loser's brackets. Alternate seeding is entirely determined by the seed of the player being replaced.

- Matches will consist of three to five games until at least one player scores 2.5 wins. Special rules apply for game 5 as outlined below.

- One player chooses one set, second player chooses second one. You don’t set cards evenly, it should be fully random.

- The person who chooses the first set for each game will go first in that game. Starting player will alternate for every game (excluding game 5), with the lowest seeded player starting the first game in a match. Therefore the lowest seeded player will pick the first set in a match.

- In the event of a fifth game, the lower seeded player will choose if they wish to go first or second. The player who goes first will pick the first set for game 5. In the event of a tie in the fifth game by the official Dominion rules, the player who went second in that match will win the round.

- Spectator chat must be set so that it is NOT visible to the players of the match.

- Players will choose from the following sets for their rounds:
-- Base Set v2
-- Intrigue v2
-- Seaside
-- Alchemy
-- Prosperity (Platinum/Colony must be RANDOM)
-- Hinterlands
-- Dark Ages (Shelters must be RANDOM)
-- Adventures (Use Exactly 1 Event)
-- Cornucopia
-- Guilds
-- Empires (Use Exactly 1 Event / Landmark)
-- Promo

If the first set picked is Alchemy, Cornucopia, Guilds or Promo, the second one can’t be picked from this list.
Every set must be used once in a round.

- We will aim not to have formal deadlines for round completion. In order to do this, this relies on everyone being as prompt as possible with their matches. If you have not contacted your opponent within a week of the matchup being posted, you will be subbed out or eliminated. If you are asked for a status update and you do not provide one / post within 3 days, you will be subbed out or eliminated.

- When posting results, please post the sets played and who won which sets. This is both for research purposes and for the competitive use of future players in the tournament.

Day starts/ends:

General rules

Changes to the usual rule sets are marked in purple.

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun!  Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game. Please read The Civility Pledge before signing up for any mafia game on this site.  If you have not /pledged there, you cannot play. Excessive personal attacks or uncivil behavior may be dealt with by modifiers or modkills.

1. General Gameplay and Etiquette:

1. You may not quote information (either real or fabricated) from any game-related source other than the thread you are posting in. This means no quotes from PMs and no quotes from QTs in the main thread or in another QT. Paraphrasing is acceptable. If you are unsure whether a post is legal, please ask the moderator before posting.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings and the QTs specifically designed for this purpose.
3. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 24 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.

2. Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:

1. Day phases will last 7 days, Twilight lasts 12 hours, Night lasts 48 hours.
2. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
3. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate. Further votes will also be ignored.
4. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until the mod locks the thread; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
5. If the deadline is hit without a player reaching the majority of votes, there will be no lynch.
6. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
7. Please submit vote revocations Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
8. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
9. If the game goes on for 3 days and 3 nights without a lynch or night kill, town wins.
10. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post in the game.
11. If the thread is locked, you may not post.  Threads can be locked for various reasons, but no matter what the reason, you may not post.  The mod may forget to lock the thread, but if they say it is locked, it is still locked.

3. Miscellaneous/Mechanics:

1. Bold, purple text is reserved for the mod.  No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please discuss this in your role QT.  Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mods may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently.  Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed.  These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mods so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued upon request after 24 hours of no activity.  A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement.  A player who has been prodded 2 times is subject to replacement under rule 3.9 without further notice.
6. Please do not discuss ongoing games, it can unintentionally affect the other game. Do not discuss this game in any thread that is not directly related to it.
7. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, which may include modkill(s) if needed.
8. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread.  Treat this game as a commitment.  Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging. Players who fail to post for 48 hours without an announcement, or fail to post for 24 hours repeatedly, risk being subject to replacement and/or being modkilled without further notice.
9. Players who discover they are too busy to play in a game or want to leave the game for civility issues are not allowed to officially /out in the thread.  A request to /out must only be done via a post in the role QT. Please do not use this as a manipulation technique.  (Note players may continue to threaten to /out or imply that they might as long as it does not include an official request). Requests to /out are final once submitted. There will be no /outing and then /inning back into the game so make sure that when you /out you have thought it through and really want to do it. Players that can't be replaced will simply be mod-killed. Whether your request to /out will lead to replacement or a modkill is up to the mod's discretion.

Forum Games / D&D for newbies?
« on: January 30, 2017, 04:05:05 pm »
Hey guys.

Me and my gf always wanted to try to play some D&D, though we don't have any experience at all. And we do want to play some via voice/video once in a week for example, not just texting about stuff.

Does anyone, by chance, know where we can find some people/community to join for such kind of stuff? Googling didn't help much actually, most sites are for hardcore players mostly.

Setup:

Items

There are some items in this game. Unless otherwise stated, players may not pass items to other players.

Unless otherwise stated, players may not use an item and their own ability in the same night.

Action Resolution Chain
All actions that are resolved at the same time -- in particular night actions -- will be resolved according to the following protocol:

  1. Find an action (or a passive modifier) such that its effect cannot possibly be modified by any other action.
  2. Resolve it.
  3. Repeat from step 1 until all actions are resolved.

In case of conflicting night actions, order of resolution is determined by the kind of action performed in the following way:

  1. Commute
  2. Block
  3. Item Use
  4. Copy
  5. Redirect
  6. Protect
  7. Kill
  8. Miscellaneous
  9. Inspect
  10. Item Giving

If you are unsure in which category your night action falls, please ask in your Role QT. In case of conflicting night actions of the same type, the following protocol is applied:

  1. Actions by town-aligned players are resolved first.
  2. If 1 doesn't apply, the action submitted first will be resolved first.
  3. To prevent the case when stalemate due to roles of 2 or more people may occur (e.g. 2 doctors, protecting each other) the following course of actions will be  prosecuted: 1 person, taking part in action circle will be randomly redirected onto another random person, whereas the rest of people, taking part in action circle will be performing their actions as planned.

Rules Questions / Merchant
« on: December 02, 2016, 03:26:57 am »
Hey!

I don't know how to upload an image.

Merchant
+1 Card
+1 Action
The first time you play a Silver this turn, +1$

So, the question is: shouldn't there be "While this is in play" clause? So^ if I play Procession on Merchant, will the Silver give me +2$? Imo it can be impossible to track IRL. What was the point for not doing the "While this is in play"?

Forum Games / Mafia games, meta and having fun
« on: November 23, 2016, 04:19:12 am »
so, I ran into some strange realisation.

I tried to play a Mafia game on a different site and understood the thing that is not so good. I can't play well while i don't know people i play with at all. And it's not about obvious reasons that i can't read them (of course i can't) but about something completely different.

First, I can't make any reads/longposts/voting explanations. My posts are short, without much insight and I try hard but just can't get into the game and see why a person have made things they've made. I look like complete lurker there. Yes, that can be explained by that this is my first game there and afterwwards it will be better, but I remember that my first game here was on that level only D1, then I was capable of doing good cases/reads.
Second, I don't have any fun for some reason! It feels hard to get into there and I don't think i will play any more games on that site but I literally don't see any reason for it. Yeah, people are a little ruder there and not so welcoming and stuff and stuff, but i feel like i am not playing but doing some hard not-so-clear job I'm not enough paid for and I can't understand why is that.

Obviously I love Mafia games here on f.ds cause i know metas of people, styles of games, there is not much offensive situations etc. but the real question is: why is this stopping me from playing in different circumstances?

Do you feel what i'm talking about? Have you tried different communities to play? What's the problem? :)

Game State Tracker:
Day 1 start || Day 1 end
...

The Rules:

The Golden Rule:
This is a game. Everyone who signs up to play must be considerate of each other, never get personal, and focus on having fun. Once the game starts, having signed up is a commitment: inactivity is just as inconsiderate as rude comments.

The Standard Rules:
1. No communication between players outside of the game thread or shared QTs at any time. This includes passing references, jokes, or cases in other games or threads, whether in context or not.
2. If the game thread is locked, do not post. If you are unsure if something is locked, ask the mod by your role QT.
3. Direct or verbatim quoting of mod-provided information is strictly forbidden. Paraphrasing is okay.
4. Quoting of QTs is forbidden as well
5. Actions with instructions that do not specify a game state will be resolved in the order they are received.
6. All night actions must be submitted within 24 hours of day ending.
7. Players must post once every 24 hours.
8. Do not edit or delete posts, ever. If you need to clarify or correct something, post again.
9. Invisible text, font size less than 10, and spoiler tags are not allowed.
10. Cryptography is not allowed.
11. The time between a lynch being reached and a flip being provided is called twilight. All players may continue posting during this time, including the lynched player.
12. Dead players may not post in thread or QT, except their Role QT. A lynched player is not "dead" until a flip has been provided.
13. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread.

The Voting Rules:
1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambigiuous nicknames are acceptable.
2. Unvotes should be in this format: unvote or Unvote: Playername.
3. Unvotes are not required if changing your vote from one player to another.
4. You may vote: no lynch.
5. Lynches occur when a simple majority (rounded up) of living players is reached. Once reached, a lynch cannot be undone.
6. Lynch rules vary by the number of players alive. With 10 or more players alive, the player with the most votes at the end of the day will be lynched. Ties are broken by coin flip. With nine or fewer players alive, if a majority lynch is not reached by the deadline, no lynch occurs.

The Rest:
1. Bold, violet color text is reserved for the Mod. Players may not use it.
2. If you have an issue or problem with the game, please write to the Mod in your role QT. Do not post complaints in the game thread.
3. Mods make mistakes - please point them out gently, especially because I am a new mod. If they can be corrected, they will. If irreversible, they will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. If a mod error disadvantages one faction greatly, the game may be called off.
5. Ask all questions and make all requests directly to the Mod via your role QT. Questions deemed as "universal" (defined as questions for which the answers should be available to all players) will be requested to be re-posted in the Game Thread and answered there.
6. One prod will be issued after 48 hours without posting in the game thread. Players are subject to replacement or modkill after one prod.
7. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod.

Deadlines:
1. Days will last seven IRL days.
2. Nights will last more than 36 hours but less than 48 hours.
3. Night action phase submission deadline will be 36 hours after the night begins.

This is pretty much normal game with normal roles with one exception: there’s 3 types of cards: Action, Treasure and Victory. The type has a real significance for all the PRs.

Everyone will have the QT, all the discussions with me will be there.

All the players have different flavor names, including VTs.

Introductions / Who is this guy?
« on: October 11, 2016, 04:17:50 am »
Hi, everyone!

I finally decided to introduce myself :)
I'm 23, living in Russia, working for some Google analogue of my country and spending too much time on this forum. My favourite board game is Dominion presumably, and talking about computer games it's Portal and HoMM3 that will never leave my heart.

My nickname history for those who's interested is this: 7 years ago i had a friend who was a lot into LotR fan-fiction and once I asked her to choose me some nickname comtaining the word "Light" (since I'm obsessed with color and lighting in many forms) and she came up with some unknown elven princess called Lalight. I liked that word a lot and chose it for my nickname for many different sites and forum, 'cause it is pretty unique!

I'm no mathematician and sometimes things on this forum go hard with math or programming and I lose any bit of comprehension :) I got into nearly every forum game, I'm also interested in modding or co-modding if everyone needs it, also I have some cool mafia ideas, though I can't playtest them and see if they are viable. So, if you feel interested, just contact me!

Thank you, fellow users, I can't deny the thought that this community is the best I've found so far in my life :)

Variants and Fan Cards / New mechanic I've been thinking on
« on: September 18, 2016, 04:18:49 am »
I'm currently thinking about a mechanic that can be maybe fun, but I don't get a chance to playtest it cause I don't play Dominion IRL.

So, here comes the Weather.

Weather is a type of cards that are all different and have only one copy of each. It has a pile but looks more like the Event. At the start of the game if you randomized cards and got the Weather cards you put them on the table with only top opened and it doesn't take place as 1 of 10 kingdom cards. When any Weather is on the table opened it immediately work and affects all the players unless stated. The ending of the Weather pile doesn't affect three-piling. Weather has its own discard pile, so when you discard one, you don't put it in your deck.

Here are my 15 Weather cards. Some of them don't have a name yet, I'm no good at it.

Type – Weather
All Action cards cost $1 less, all Victory cards cost $2 more
_______________________________________________
If any player played 5 or more action cards on their turn, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
Blood Rain
All attack cards do their attack part twice
_______________________________________________
If any player got unaffected by any attack on their turn, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
All cards cost one less (but not less than zero)
_______________________________________________
If any player bought 3 or more cards on their turn, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
Every player takes his -1 Card Token before every turn
_______________________________________________
If any player ends his turn with 2 or more unused actions (not action cards) or 3 or more unused $, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
At the start of the turn, every player reveals the top card of his deck. If it is Curse, Victory or Shelter card they put it into their hand. Else, discard it.
_______________________________________________
If any player gained a card costing 2 or less, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
Still
(Nothing here)
_______________________________________________
If any player gained a victory card on their turn, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
Every player trashes a card at the start of the clean-up
_______________________________________________
If any player trashed a card costing 3 or more on their turn, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
Victory cards can’t be bought.
_______________________________________________
If any player had $10 or more in the end of their Buy phase, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
If any player played Silver on his turn, they can’t buy Treasure cards
_______________________________________________
If at least one pile is empty, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up

Type – Weather
At the start of their turn every player may reveal their hand; if it has 3 or more Victory cards: Discard your hand, Draw 6 cards
_______________________________________________
If any player gains a victory cards costing 8 or more on their turn, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up.

Type – Weather
At the start of their turn, every player discards a card. If it is an Action card, Draw a card.
__________________________________________
If any player shuffles his deck other than in Clean-Up phase discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up.

Type – Weather
No player can move his tokens, take VP chips or coin tokens.
__________________________________________
If any player didn’t buy cards this turn, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up.

Type – Weather
If any player trashes a card, it is set aside. Next turn they put it into their hand.
__________________________________________
If any player has exactly 0 actions (not action cards), buys and coins in the end of their buy phase, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up.

Type – Weather
In the start of their turn any player names a card and look at the top card of their deck. If it is the named card trash it and gain a card costing exactly the same cost. Every other player discards the named card or reveal his hand with no such cards.
__________________________________________
If any player has 5 differently named cards in play in the end of the buy phase, discard this and open the next Weather card after clean-up.

What do you guys think about idea in general and cards themselves? What can be upgraded here?
