LCG General Discussion / Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn

Has anyone else played this? I've played seven games so far. Four with the preconstructed decks and three with decks that we made ourselves. As I haven't really tried everything out yet, I cannot say for certain if the game is well balanced or not. So far it seems like nature and illusion are pretty strong, though. And the deckbuilding is kind of limited by the kind of small card pool. Either way, I think this is a game worth checking out if you've wanted to try out an LCG or if you're willing to invest in another one.

Have anyone played this? I got to try it at my parent's place this week. And I really liked it. First of the game looks absolutely gorgeous. The pictures are super awesome. Some components aren't super high quality, but nothing is bad enough to remark on. I'm pretty sure it would be better if you looked up someone explaining the game instead of me trying to explain it to you if you don't know the game.

I have only played it ~8-10 times, but so far, it's probably one of the games I like the most that I've tried recently. Definately worth checking out. It's 2-4 players, and I've tried it with 2, 3 and 4 players, and I think it works very well with any number of players.

Dominion General Discussion / Swedish Nationals 2014 tournament report
« on: September 28, 2014, 08:50:45 am »
Yesterday was the day of our Nationals. We had a pretty low turnout of 15 people. Fortunately we were doing a three player format, so 15 was still a nice number of players. The format was six rounds of 3 player games. Everybody got to be 1st player twice, 2nd player twice and third player twice. 1st place granted you 4 points, 2nd place 2,5, and third place 1. In case of ties, the points were added and divided by the amount of players who tied. After the six rounds, the three player with the most points got to play in the finals, the player with the most points going first and so on. The finals was first to two wins. If you won a game, you got to play third in the next one. The second player got to be first and the third place got to play second. In all games you got to arrange your starting 10 cards in whichever way you wanted.

I unfortunately didn't write down all the sets, so I'm mostly going by my memory of the important cards.

Game 1. Important cards: Count, Mountebank, Beggar, Shelters and Graverobber(?).

So I was third player in this game. Fortunately my mother who was first player opted for a Graverobber opener (she later told me that she intended to go for Counts and then Graverobbers to upgrade Counts into Provinces. Me and the other guy went for Mountebank/Beggar. The amount of shuffle luck I had this game was pretty insane. In the end, I ended up with three Curses and seven Provinces and a nice 51 point win.

Game 2. Important cards: Masquerade, Familiar, Alchemist, Scavenger and Shelters.

I was pretty happy to be first player on this board. We all opened Potion/Masquerade and we all got a Familiar during our first reshuffle. My Familiar missed the reshuffle and I got pummeled with Curses. I bought two Scavengers and another Masquerade which helped me getting rid of the Curses pretty good. There was no way to block Curses but we still ended up with three left in the pile after a while. We all agreed that there was no way of telling who had missed one, and decided to just play on. The other two players started to go for Alchemists while I was pretty busy cleaning up my deck. This was the only game during the entire tournament to go to time. When everybody had played the same amount of turns, we counted points. I had 12 vp. The guy to my left had 12 vp. And the guy to my right had 12 vp. We all rejoiced in our shared victory!

Game 3. Important cards: Hunting Party, Embargo, Tactician, Storeroom and Merchant Guild.

I went for Hunting Party/Embargo opening. Embargoing the Tactician. Then I proceded to be the guy who went hardest on the HPs. I ended up with six. Added a Merchant Guild and proceded to a pretty easy win after that.

Game 4. Important cards: Counterfeit, Rogue, Rats, Upgrade, Horse Traders, Trader and Shelters.

I opted to go for a HT/Silver opening in orded to get my hands on Counterfeit/Rogue early. One guy went for Upgrade and the other for Trader. I hit a lot of early 6's and got a bunch of Golds instead. Very shortly we all started to buy green cards like crazy. My Golds helped me out getting ahead in that race. A very quick and pretty uninteresting game.

Game 5. Important cards: Ambassador, Tunnel, Loan and Ironmonger.

There were a couple of other cards in the setup, but most of them I can't remember even though buying a few. I won the early Ambassador war and proceded to get a bunch of Ironmongers, two Loans and a couple of Tunnels. Although Ironmonger isn't the best enabler for Tunnel, I knew I wanted the cycling of the Ironmongers, and the random chance of free golds seemed pretty good to me. I got a bunch of lucky Golds due to the Ironmongers and the Loans and could start to buy a lot of green cards. My father who also did pretty well with his Ambassadors got some green cards as well. But with less economy he had a hard time keeping up. The third guy got the bad end of the Ambassador stick and had a deck that was mostly Coppers and Estates. He didn't have a very good time.

At this point I was guaranteed to be in the finals. I even had a good enough score that no matter how badly I would do in the final game, I would still be seated 1st in the first game of the finals.

Game 6. Important cards: Bishop, Peddler, Ironworks, Spy and Apprentice.

We all went for the same strategy here. The guy who ended up with five Ironworks could control the end of the game good enough that he won pretty easily. I got hit pretty bad by some early Spies and got a couple of vps behind everyone in the end. But fortunately it didn't really matter.

Unfortunately the guy who placed third during the initial rounds wasn't able to stay and so he forefited his place in the finals to the player in the fourth spot. One of them was my mother and the other was Hampuse1 (I think he's here on the forums somewhere). Their tiebreakers (number of wins) were the same, so they played a 2 player game to see who would advance. My mother lost that one pretty good. So the finals would be Me, luliin and Hampuse1. We're all friends who play Dominion on a regular basis, me and luliin are engaged and Hampuse1 and I play Spoils together. We also have some pretty juicy Dominion backstories as well.

Back in 2011 I won the National finals against Hampuse1. luliin came in second 2012 and won 2013. So the stakes were high.

Finals Game 1. Important cards: Tactician, Hoard, Haven, Tunnel and Spice Merchant.

I opted to go for a Haven/Tactician opening hoping to get an early Hoard and then start greening pretty quick. Both Hampuse1 and luliin went for Silver/Spice Merchant transitioning into Hoard/Tactician. I'm not sure if my start was better or if I got some lucky draws/good smoothing out with a couple of Havens, but I got a lot of early Provinces and didn't really have to slow down. In the end it was pretty close, but I narrowed out a win, luliin placing second and Hampuse1 third.

Finals Game 2. Important cards, Masquerade, Courtyard, Colony/Platinum and Tactician.

So in this game everyone opened Silver/Masquerade. There was some engine potential there with Workers Village and City. But the only draw more than one card was Masquerade and Courtyard. And in a three player game I deemed it too slow. Neither of us got very good starts. I got a couple of 8's and opted for Gold, Hampuse1 and luliin both stopped for a Tactician. After a while the Platinum pile started running low (I think there was only 1 left in the end) and we started buing Colonies. Nobody got a double Colony turn, and the turns they sacrificed to play their Tacticians, I made up for with some buying power. In the end luliin narrowed out with a win with her first player advantage, me getting in second place.

Finals Game 3. Important cards, Rebuild, Duke and Colony/Platinum.

Well, this was a fun game... Not. Neither fo us really like Rebuild. I got 4 Rebuilds, while they got 3 each. I also never trashed a Duchy, so my dukes ended up being worth 4 each. Trashing was crazy, and we were all tired after playing Dominion for a day, so neither of us had any real knowledge of the score. (Queue discussions of the point counter). So when Hampuse1 ended the game with the last Duke, he thought he had it. And so did both me and luliin. The end result was something like 43 for me, 41 for luliin and 40 for Hampuse1. Which made me the winner of not only that game, but also of the Swedish Nationals 2014. Hopefully I can make it to Worlds next year to represent Sweden there. I didn't do too well back in 2011 at Essen, and I wasn't too happy about my placement at Worlds 2013 at Gen Con either.

Either way, hope this was interesting for you to read. There aren't that many IRL reports around, and me not having either the sets nor videos makes it a bit dry. But, one have to make the best out of what you have. ;)

Dominion General Discussion / The strength of the attacks
« on: May 17, 2014, 02:11:27 am »
Inspired by the Possession attack thread, I wanted to make a list of how strong I think the attacks in the game are. Not the attack cards, but the attack itself.

There were some issues with making the list of attacks. I had to reword some of the cards to better reflect the attack only aspect. And then there were cards like Margrave that got the draw a card, then discard, and Soothsayer that didn't get the draw a card. If you make your own list, feel free to include or exclude those. ;)

Anyway, here's my list of the attacks. From worst to most powerful.

Each other player reveals the top card of his deck and either discards it or puts it back, your choice.

Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck. If they revealed any Treasure cards, they trash one of them that you choose. They discard the other revealed cards.

Each other player discards down to 4 cards in hand.

Each other player reveals a Victory card from his hand and puts it on his deck (or reveals a hand with no Victory cards).

Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck, and you choose one: either he discards them or he puts them back on top in an order he chooses.

Each other player discards a Copper card (or reveals a hand with no Copper).

Reveal a card from your hand. Each other player gains a copy of it.

Each other player discards the top card of his deck. If it's a Victory card he gains a Curse. Otherwise you may have him gain a copy of the discarded card.

Each other player reveals the top 3 cards of his deck, discards the revealed Actions and Treasures, and puts the rest back on top in any order he chooses.

Each other player trashes the top card of his deck and gains a card with the same cost that you choose.

Each other player reveals cards from the top of his deck until he reveals a Victory or Curse card. He puts it on top and discards the other revealed cards.

Each other player with at least 5 cards in hand discards his hand and draws 4 cards.

Each other player chooses one: he discards 2 cards; or he gains a Curse card, putting it in his hand.

You may reveal a Treasure from your hand. Each other player with 5 or more cards in hand discards a copy of it (or reveals a hand without it).

Each other player draws a card, then discards down to 3 cards in hand.

Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck, trashes one of them costing from 3 to 6, and discards the rest.

Each other player reveals cards from the top of his deck until revealing one costing 3 or more. He trashes that card and may gain a card costing at most 2 less than it. He discards the other revealed cards.

Each other player gains a Ruins.

Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck, trashes a revealed Silver or Gold you choose, and discards the rest. If he didn't reveal a Treasure, he gains a copper.

Each other player discards down to 3 cards in his hand.

Each other player with 4 or more cards in hand puts cards from his hand on top of his deck until he has 3 cards in his hand.

Each other player may discard a Curse. If he doesn’t, he gains a Curse and a Copper.

Each other player with 5 or more cards in hand reveals his hand and discards a card that you choose.

Each other player may reveal a Bane card from his hand. If he doesn't, he gains a Curse.

Each other player gains a Curse.

Each other player discards the top card of his deck, then gains a Curse, putting it on top of his deck.

Each other player gains a Curse and discards down to 3 cards in hand.

Innovation Game Reports / A close and intense game
« on: April 30, 2013, 06:44:39 am »
http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201304/30/game-20130430-034133-6e174186.html

I just played this game, and it was probably one of the closest games of Innovation I've even had. I enjoyed it immensely and I thought I would share it with you. If you have any thoughts, please feel free to comment. I would like to get better at this game, and there's a lot that I don't really get yet.

Help! / Vineyards vs Goons
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:46:07 am »
While sitting around in the lobby I was challenged to a game with very specific constraints. I was curious and accepted the proposed game. The first thing I noticed was that there were a possibility for Goons, but there weren't that much drawing power besides Shanty Town and cantrips and no trashing. There were also a lot of action cards that you could fuel Vineyards with. And then there were Platinum and Colonies. I decided to go for multi-Goons, while my opponent opted for Vineyards.

I am curious as how people would play this kingdom. I did it with multiple Goons, my opponent who proposed the game with the constraints went for Vineyards. Is it possible that Goons is a trap here and that it's easy to get super powered Vineyards? Note that at the end of the game, his Vineyards would be worth 6 points, witn 1 action away from being 7.

Anyways, I'm still not sure I went the right way, and that's why I'm posting it here.

[EDIT:] And here's the game. http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201211/27/game-20121127-063740-5c7b041f.html

Forum Games / Play by forum RPG (interest check)
« on: November 27, 2012, 08:06:09 am »
I don't have much experience from playing role playing games by forum, but I've played table top RPGs for more than 10 years and I'm always willing to play some more. So I was basically checking to see if there are people who are interested in trying out RPGs online, or if there are experieced players who would be interested in GM:ing or playing.

If there would be enough interest, I could see myself GM in almost any setting that I'm familiar with.

Would any interested people prefer to play in an existing system, or is freeforming ok?

General Discussion / Computer and Video Games
« on: October 25, 2012, 08:44:45 am »
I guess I'm not the only one here who enjoys a good electronic game every once in a while. Before I found Dominion I played a lot of NDS games. I'm not saying Dominion was the reason I stopped playing a lot of electronic games. A week ago me and my girlfirend picked up our NDS and continued playing the Ace Attorney series. That made me think that there are probably a lot of people here who would ejoy those. So I thought about starting a game recommendation thread.

So the games I currently would recommend are these:

The Ace Attorney series (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - NDS/Wii/iOS, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All - NDS/Wii, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations - NDS/Wii and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney - NDS).

These games are seriously good! I mean it. Seriously! If you've even considered joining a game of mafia here on the forums, you will most likely enjoy these games. The basics of the game is that you are a defense attorney, assigned different clients in different murder cases. You go about talking to people, investigating crime scenes and snoop around for evidence. This is done in a more dialogue oriented style, reminding of old classic point and click games, such as Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island and other Lucas Arts games. When you've found enough information it's time to head to the courtroom where you have to find contradiction in witnesses' testimonies and prove that people are lying. All while reading VERY WELL written dialogue. This series is originaly in Japanese, but the translation is REALLY good. Sometimes it feels kind of odd with japanese culture all over the place, when it's set in North America. But besides that, there's a lot of really good, bad and funny puns, enjoyable characters and a lot of warm humor. It's not an action packed series, but games in the department visual novels. Which describes the games pretty well. It's like an interactive novel, where you get to solve the crime. The music is also really good. A lot of really good tracks through all of the games. If you have an Apple device/anything else that can play this game, play it!

Another game that I really have been enjoying lately is Dark Souls (XBOX 360/PS3/PC). It's an action game, where you die. A lot. It's really skill intensive and if you are not careful you die. A lot. First time playing it I died four times during the tutorial. Before you get the hang of it you will die. A lot. But the feeling you get when you finally defeat the boss you've been trying to kill for the last 5 hours is really great. And there's a lot of content in this game. My first playthrough, it lasted me 60 hours. I have played it for about 60 additional hours after that, trying different builds, different weapons and different routes to different places. Before you go out and buy/rent/whatever this game, this game is not for the faint hearted. Just do a YouTube search for Dark Souls frustration, and you get what I mean. It's a really rewarding though, and once you get better at it, learn the different enemies' patterns you'll die a lot less and feel really good about it. Also, a lot of the bosses are really epic and it feels really nice to fight them. I can think of three boss fights that seems really unfair at first, but in the end, I think that only one of them is actually a not so good boss fight. Anyways, if you like a challenge or like yell at your screen when playing games, give this game a spin.

Dominion World Masters / Coverage

Game Reports / Crazy board
« on: June 16, 2012, 04:36:53 am »
I just finished this game. And while the game itself is not very interesting I thought the board looked kinda funny. I was considering Margrave at one point but decided upon Wharf instead, mainly because it wouldn't help my opponent to line up his Fool's Gold and because of Wharf's generall goodness. Was there a better way to play this board than the way we both did? Would Stables be too slow? Could Margrave actually work? Would Venture help? Could you benefit from the extra cash from Tribute?

Dominion Isotropic / Multiplayers on Isotropic
« on: June 13, 2012, 08:34:00 am »
I've been playing some 3-player games recently, and I really like it. There are two "problems" I've encountered though. First of all, there's not a lot of multiplayers on auto match. Second, most of the multiplayers are around 20 or lower. I've once or twice been automatched against someone mid 30's, but that's about it.

So, I'd basically want to encourage people to play more multiplayer games. It's fun and adds new aspects to the game. Read Geronimoo's article about it and get cracking!

Clarification: By multiplayer I mean 3 or 4 players.

Introductions / Greetings from Sweden
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:46:41 am »
Hi. I've been around this forum for some months now. Been playing Dominion somewhere between Prosperity and Cornucopia. Being a member of a board game club we played it a lot though, and last year I managed to win the Swedish Nationals and got to represent Sweden at the WM in Essen, where I managed to conquer the 15th place. Since then the players in our area has gotten a lot better and other good players have started to play with us in a real life Dominion League (which Fabian is currently in the lead), so I'm pretty sure it won't be easy to win the nationals this year. It's really fun to be a part of a competitive community, whether it's this online one (which has helped me get better at this game immensely) or IRL.

I tend to play for fun when I'm not playing in tournaments and that's why I might overlook something like Smithy+BM and try to go for Worker's Village+Rabble instead. But then I'm pretty bad at building engines, so I tend to not do very well when I'm not playing some BM variant.

Anyways, get out there and enjoy the game!

Dominion Isotropic / Who do you enjoy playing?
« on: April 17, 2012, 04:35:36 am »
Inspired by the nemesis thread and being reminded that I played [MAD] Mergus a while back in the second (I think) IsoDom I felt that this forum needs a thread where we talk about people that we enjoy playing.

DISCLAIMER: I generally enjoy playing the game regardless of my opponent. There are a lot of nice people out there, and I feel like I haven't really had the chance to get to know them all as much as I'd sometimes want to. If you want to let me know you, just chat me up in a game some time. ;)

I've got a few people that I get really happy when I'm matched against.

First off is [MAD] Mergus, whom I played in the first round of my first IsoDom. He was super nice and we had a really nice set of games that I really enjoyed. When he got matched against my girlfriend the IsoDom after that he still remembered me, which made me really happy. I've had a few games against him since that, and I get really giddy everytime I see him.

Then we have Davio. He is also super nice and we've had a lot of close games. I think we first got matched up in an IsoDom as well. He currently have more games on me that I on him, but as time goes by I'm pretty sure that will change. ;) I always feel happy when I'm auto-matched against him and I smile every time I see him in the lobby.

Then we have all the people that I've played IRL. Those are always a blast to play against, and it's a totally different feeling from playing some anonymous username that you know probably belong to someone that may be a nice person, but if you've actually met and played the guy/gal, it's a totally different experience. Those people include, but are not limited to, luliin, Fabian, Görling, hampuse1, Bizze, Turambar, Jeebus X. Cripes, AttackHoran, MurpLekkit and purplekkit.

Lastly we have Bubs, who crack me up every time.

Game Reports / A Colony game with Ambassador
« on: January 29, 2012, 10:17:17 pm »
Sooo... I really don't like Ambassador. At all. I prefer it over Chapel, but then, Chapel is one of the cards I really don't want to play with. So when this board was presented to me, I could not resist the urge to skip the Ambassadors, even if they are really, really, really good on Colony boards. I got to use one of my favorite cards, and with some success.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201201/29/game-20120129-190621-35f38788.html

I do think I could've opened Trader/Herbalist instead, but contrary to how many people like to play it (or so I've heard) I really want those stones in my deck as soon as possible. Especially with my opponent clogging up my deck with an Ambassador. I also don't really think my opponent played optimally, going for the stones himself, but then, I would probably not have bought the third to last Colony on turn 21. Any thoughts? Was there another even more prominent strategy to be used here?

Puzzles and Challenges / The World's most precious Copper
« on: December 07, 2011, 03:07:28 am »
My friends and I've been thinking about how much a single Copper can be worth. As of now, we have a solution that lets you but (if you have enough buys) to buy all standard Victory Cards in a Colony game, save for one Estate.

[EDIT:] In a single turn. So no Outpost/Possession, unless they are the turns that make the Copper worth all the cash.

Game Reports / Tournament vs Gardens
« on: November 02, 2011, 01:02:07 pm »
Just played this game and my opponent called me a tournament noob and said he won easily. Maby I'm totally off, but personally I think it was pretty close and that he didn't really win the game easily. Did I never stand a chance or was it actually a close game.

Also besides going for Tournament and ending the game when not needed to, what did I do wrong?
