Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Solo Turn 2 Province with Estates

I found Wishing Well and Death Cart.

Edits: You can get a colony with Mining Village.

I was disappointed to find that advisor doesn't quite work.

Magpie also works (for province).

For Magpie and Wishing Well, where does the 8th coin come from that isn't one of the 7 coppers?

Ironmonger seems like it can give you 3 coins from playing it, and 4 Coppers in hand.

Don't all these just get 7? Probably I'm missing something.

Edit: oh, ok I get it. Well, Tournament.

You got 'em all.  Thanks for playing, everybody.  Especially to Donald X. for the big solve.  Very cool!

Hints and then I'll fill in the blanks:

8. Nah, you don't need any hints. You're on the right track!
10. Clearly I overestimated how iconic this fictional character was. She's not Albert Einstein.

Of course, Scout actually is weak.

I will laugh when a new card is released specifically to give scout a purpose. I imagine a $4 cost combination of great hall and wishing well. Worth 1 point. Can trip. Wishing well effect. Scout draws it up. Auto laboratory.

Seems like it would make scout viable.
Ha, yeah right. Scout will always be awful, no matter how much support.

Scout is completely unstoppable as long as Great Hall, Silk Road, Scrying Pool, Vineyard, and Trade Route are in the kingdom.

I'd probably go with:

Gardens: Alt VP aids engine, but rush if Ironworks is present.

Seems to capture the essence of the card nicely. There are a handful of really strong interactions between Gardens and another card (Beggar comes to mind), but I think in the majority of kingdoms, Gardens is just standard alt VP. Most Gardens rushes in 2-player lose to halfway decent engines, and without specific combos, they're also nothing special.

Talisman with <4 non-trashing +buy is a pretty fun gardens-rusher.

I think the problem is arising from the fact that English annoyingly abbreviates the starts of dependent clauses. To have no ambiguity, it should be "for him, who", but English let's you scrunch that up.

In this case it would have been "for he who was asking."  "For him, who was asking" means something different.

For a particularly vivid example, compare

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

with

"Let him, who is without sin, cast the first stone."

I wonder if there will be a token to put on supply piles to make cards in that pile cheaper or more expensive.  That would be cool for Band of Misfits.

Messenger is a great card for those of us who are constantly compelled to try "creative" strategies and are tired of competing against more rational players!

You know, I wonder who this herowannabe is. He only had 4 posts and posted this combo and then vanished. Who is this mysterious person who discovered one of the most powerful Dominion combos of all time.

I have the same question about the guy who discovered KC-KC-Goons-Masquerade. I played  against him on isotopic -- did he ever post here?

Welcome back to Dominion Picture Trivia.  Hope you're all ready to play a third time!  This is the last installment so the difficulty has been ratcheted up a notch.

This round will be a bit different.  In the past two rounds, the goal was to think backwards from a picture to decipher the two Dominion cards that, when entered into Google image search, return that picture as a front page result.

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=12604.0.
http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=12705.0

In this round, a pair of search terms have again been used to return an image, using Google.  But this time only one of each pair is the name of a Dominion card.  The other term, which is the same for all 12 pairs, is not a card per se, but a word or phrase that has a precise meaning inside the game of Dominion.

Can you figure out the key word or phrase, as well as the 12 Dominion cards that, when paired with this word or phrase, produce the 12 images below?

I think these are pretty hard. Good luck!

2. it's going to be something like market + advisor (but different). There are some wonderful images for market + expand btw.

I love stock photos like that!

However... those answers aren't really all that close.

Round 2!

The names of exactly two Dominion cards are entered into Google Image Search, and an image is chosen from among the front page results. Can you work backwards from the images to figure out what the twelve pairs of cards were? In some cases there may be more than one workable answer.

Danse Macabre
Types: Action
Cost: $4
You may play an Action from your hand for none of its effects. If you do, +4 Cards and +1 Action.

When you buy this, trash it.

When you trash this, gain 2 cheaper cards of different costs.

I really hate cards with two lines. I also really hate "play an Action from your hand for none of its effects". I'd prefer "discard an Action". I like the idea of a card you cannot buy, and I even like the specific effect you get if you try to buy it. If I were to make such a card, I'd prefer something like, "When you buy this, instead of gaining it, gain two cheaper cards." Boom. One line. Then if you manage to gain it without buying it, it does something cool.

Neat. I executed this idea as above, and I think that's the easiest implementation to understand other than "Discard an Action."

Ha, nice! I remember that one. Man, my opinions have changed. I mean, I still don't like cards with two lines, but the "for none of its effects" doesn't seem so bad.

I was actually going to post this updated version:

Quote
Factory
Types: Action
Cost: $2 or $3
+1 Action. +$1. You may play an Action card from your hand. Instead of doing its on-play ability, you may draw 3 cards.

So the card played retains its name (for Horn of Plenty) and also any "while-in-play" effects it has. This also eliminates Throne Room/Throne Room/Factory/X issues that my original version had.

Thanks, I took your advice and lost the two lines.

For Factory, I think it's cleaner if the other actions loses both its "in-play" and "on-play" effects. Seems a little odd to separate the two.

Probably this one is forever unknowable. Or, I mean, not worth the effort.

But what if it's not?!? Here's 57 cards that I believe kill all the combos that have already been mentioned.  Can anyone do it without any of them?  Does anyone think this is more conservative than necessary?

Solitaire game. Grand Market is in the kingdom. That's all you know.

How many different cards do you need to ban from the kingdom to ensure that you will not be able to buy* a Grand Market until turn 5?

(Simpler question: what's your estimate of the number? mine was 8.)

*EDIT: I meat "gain," sorry. But I haven't figured in out yet either way.

I am not very sold on Talisman being an enabler for Gardens though.

I could be wrong there! But I played a game with Talisman, Gardens, and Worker's Village that got Gardens up to 6 by turn 14. However, that had Warehouse in it, which was a huge difference maker.

I don't think this strategy is nearly as fun subbing Hamlet for Worker's Village, and without Warehouse. 6 point Gardens are more of a reach. On the other hand, this kingdom is much easier for the solo Gardens-Talisman player to drain. Especially if the other guy goes for Cultist.

Cities will be great - but I don't see the economic payload that'll lead to much more than double-Province turns. My guess is it's not going to be able to get enough ponts before Gardens shuts the door.

The Gardens player will need a strategy to empty the third pile almost immediately after the second one.

I think it would be easy to drain any of Gardens, Ruins, Hamlets and Candlestick Makers with enough Talismans and buys.

The Gardens player has no real need to rush, as Gardens should get up to 5 with ease and 6 if things go long. The window for Provinces to work is narrow at best!

I'm a believer in Candlestick Talisman Gardens! I'd open Talisman Candlestick, and buy Gardens on all non-Talisman 4s as soon as the 2nd shuffle. But maybe Hamlet is better cause of the extra card.

98
Whoa these other ones are great. Especially Bridge/Tournament

You guys got all of mine except 6. Yes, one of the cards was Hamlet,, but no one got the other one.

That skull belongs to Yorick, who was the jester when Hamlet was a kid. That's why seeing the skull makes him all whoa about everything. Anyway, you can just Google Hamlet and get a picture of Hamlet with a skull, but you have to Google Hamlet and Jester together to get so many skull Hamlets that you also get that one. As far as I know.

Nice solving.  Thanks!
