These are fun. What's the current status of the 5th game?

They were designed to be extra-hard, and can't be reverse-image-searched, so some of them are still sitting around unanswered, waiting for the type of person who wants to stare at pixels until they figure out what they're looking at.  I still check in on them.

Puzzles and Challenges / World Famous Dominion Picture Trivia
« on: July 31, 2017, 02:32:22 pm »
Hello, fans.  As you are all aware, Dominion Picture Trivia has become a global phenomenon, far surpassing in popularity the original game itself.  While this has greatly impacted my lifestyle and status, and while my success has been a massive drain on my time, I haven't gotten so big that I've forgotten my brand.

I'm a puzzle maker.  But, unlike other puzzle makers who have reached my level of acheivement -- Da Vinci, Turing -- I have my finger on the pulse.  My puzzles, in addition to merely being a delightful mental challenge, are a masterwork that contain and unlock all the other relevant art and culture of our moment.  In a way, to solve one of my puzzles is to "solve" our generation.

And so, despite the temptation to rest on my laurels, I must continue to create.  Even as I dictate these words into my iPhone 7, while driving my Mercedes G Wagon 15 miles over the speed limit through Beverly Hills, I see in the blank stairs of passersby a hunger for the mental and spiritual enrichment only I can provide.

Every schoolboy knows the rules.  The names of exactly two Dominion (was that what the game was called?) cards, events, or landmarks are input into Google Image Search, and an image is chosen from among the front page results. You then work backwards from the images to figure out what the original pairs of cards were.

It's pointless to relive past glory, but previous examples can be found here, here, here, here and here.

These are like the Classic variety of the game, with no additional gimmicks, bells, or whistles.

Can you work backwards from the images to the pairs of card names?

http://i.imgur.com/S4zh5k4.jpg

Posting the solutions as they are solved.

Woo hoo!  Mith cracked it: all the card pairs were entered into Google after first being read aloud into a phone, creating 15 sound-alikes.  In some cases one card name became a homophone, in others the two words combined when spoken aloud into something new.  I'll continue to post the answers as you get them, and  in about a week I'll post whatever is still stumping everyone.

1. Mint Spy (Mince Pie)
2. Cache Advance (Cash Advance)
3. Gold Raze (Gold Rays)
4. Ball Arena (Ballerina)
5. Keep Hoard (Keyboard)
6. Abandoned Mine Temple (Abandoned Mayan Temple)
7. Spoils Port (Spoilsport)
8. Loan Ranger (Lone Ranger)
9. Raid Inn (Raiden)
10. Steward Mill (Stuart Mill)
11. Baron Orchard (Barren Orchard)
12. Thief Fugitive (The Fugitive)
13. Shepherd Ferry (Shepard Fairey)
14. Misery Capital (Missouri Capitol)
15. Imp Prince (Imprints)

And since this thread just got revived, I'm pretty dang sure my answer for #6 is correct. Could I get a re-check on that ome?

Kind of, but not really.

I mean, I found this on like line 8 of google image searching "warrior arena", and this is 2 months after the challenge was first posted. I don't know, I feel like it's a valid alternative answer, but it's up to you obviously.

Ok it's a valid alternate answer!

Hello, and welcome back to Dominion Picture Trivia, for the fifth and final installment.  I hope you have had a restful two years.

As some of you may remember, in this game, the names of exactly two Dominion cards, events, or landmarks are entered into Google Image Search, and an image is chosen from among the front page (ish) results. You then work backwards from the images to figure out what the original pairs of cards were.

In this round, each pair includes the name of exactly one card, event, or landmark from the newest expansion, Empires.  No name is used twice.

Additionally, each image has been made beautiful by having a filter applied to it on PRISMA, an amazing app which takes ordinary photographs and turns them into Dominion card art.

Can you work backwards from the images to figure out all twelve pairs of names?  There's maybe some tough ones in there.

EDIT: As they are solved, a list of solvers.

What cards do you think make the best target for a Giant BM?

I was actually hoping someone would either post a video showing the full reference, or at least point out that their chief weapons are surprise and fear.

Amongst their weapons.

I appreciate articles showing the most epic logs with the discussed card. So could someone please post a couple of games where Scout is awesome really good not much worse than a laboratory easily on a regular basis more than once?

Scout is unbeatable here.  I've posted this game about four thousand times but it's worth it.

Wandering Minstrel is a Village when you only have actions.

WM is still better than a Village in that case. You get to look at the cards and reorder them.

They're all Wandering Minstrels.

At the end of the same turn's Action phase, you play King's Court on Forge. Which of these sets could represent the three cards you gain as a result, and how?

I see. It was nowhere specified that they had to be the King's Court and Forge you had in your hand at the beginning. Makes it a bit of a trick question, honestly.

For sure.

In a standard solitaire game of Dominion, it's the beginning of your turn. You have no cards on any mats, no Durations in play, and no active Princes.  There are no Events on the board.

You have somehow reached the following state: none of the cards in your hand or deck cost more than zero, except for one King's Court and one Forge.

I suppose it doesn't count if we gain other cards too, like Border Village instead of Gold for Duchies?

I like this idea but it seems to go against the terms of the puzzle.

I'll just end it so that you have time to process your anger and disappointment.

Using Madman for draw and Actions, and Spoils for coin:

Play Trusty Steed for Silver. Madman to draw these and the Spoils you'll need.
Forge Silver into Black Market
Draw and King's Court the Black Market
Buy Messenger, gain Fortress, Border Village, gain Fortress, buy Stonemason and gain King's Court and Forge.
Draw all cards: for Province, Kings Court Forge on the two Fortresses. For Duchies, play Princess first, then Kings Court on Forge and trash one Fortress and one Silver three times.

dghunter79 would have to confirm, but I am pretty sure the no higher than 0 cost in the discard was just a clarification on this statement...
You have somehow reached the following state: none of the cards in your hand or deck cost more than zero, except for one King's Court and one Forge.

(because people here like to be pedantic and would just say they started with 3 Provinces in their discard because it isn't their deck.)

Thanks, that's exactly what I meant. And I can't argue that people are being pedantic (this time) because my solution is quite pedantic as well!

I didn't notice Madman, but I was still editing my post on my phone, and I didn't see your post when I thought of it dude, but thanks, Madman makes anything possible. And why freaking stop at Province? Let's get Platinum!

Trash 3 Silver, trash Platinum twice. Too easy.

Let's get COLONY.

If you think outside the box a bit:

Play Followers, Trash Gold and Silver and your new Estate, trash Colony twice.

Ah, forgot to request no tokens. Knew there was some new thing I'd forgotten.

Ok, so how about without tokens?

Nicely done, though.

EDIT: Also, at the start of the turn there are no cards in the discard that cost more than zero.

Puzzles and Challenges / Solo: Most VP on turn two?
« on: May 03, 2015, 05:59:23 pm »
With an unlimited number of events I can get 19 but that's gotta be beatable.

KINGDOM
Cards: Black Market (with Baker and Looter), Border Village, Butcher, Messenger, Peddler, Procession, Tunnel.
Events: Alms, Ball, Borrow, Mission, Traveling Fair.

First turn:
Hand - 5 copper
Play token, buy Borrow, Traveling Fair, Ball (gaining Messenger and Procession), Ruined Village. Top-deck all three gained cards

Second turn:
Hand - Ruined Village, Procession, Messenger, Estate
Play Ruined Village, play Procession on Messenger, discarding deck, gaining Butcher.
With $3 buy Borrow, Mission, Alms (gaining Peddler)

Mission turn:
Hand - Procession, Butcher, Peddler, Estate
Play Procession on Butcher. Trash Estate, spend one coin token to gain Tunnel. Trash Peddler, Spend 3 coin tokens to gain Colony. Gain Border Village, Duchy.
Buy Alms, gaining Tunnel.

One Colony, One Duchy, Two Tunnels, Two Estates = 19 VP.

Also:
5 Copper and Baker Token
Buy Borrow, Traveling Fair, Ball gaining Procession and Messenger, and Ruined Village, top-decking all three cards.
Draw these, and Estate.
Play Ruined Village.  Procession-Messenger, discarding deck, trashing Messenger and gaining Butcher.
After the -$1 Coin Token you have $3, three buys, and two actions in play.
Buy Borrow, Mission, and Alms, gaining Peddler.
Shuffle
Mission turn: -1 Card Token, Draw Procession, Butcher, Peddler, Estate.  Procession-Butcher, trashing Peddler on the second play and spending 3 coin tokens to gain Colony.

Only requires 5 events, 4 Kingdom cards, Baker somewhere, a Looter somewhere, and Ruined Village as the top Ruins!  And if you want to go crazy and maximize VP, you could Butcher the Estate into a Tunnel, as well as gain Border Village and Duchy off the Procession.
5 Events is apparently a lot though, DXV recommends two or less. Cool use of Ball though, can probably use a lot of other things than Messenger.
e.g. 5C, Borrow, Baker, Travelling Fair, Ball for Procession+Baron topdecked, drawing Procession+Baron+2E, Procession+Baron+Borrow=$8 for Province.

Yeah but with Messenger you can get a Colony.

T1: Scouting Party/Ball using Baker token and Borrow, discarding 3 Estates, gaining Magpie and Death Cart
T2: Draw 2 Copper, Magpie, and Death Cart. Magpie draws 2 Copper, Death Cart for $5, $9-$1 from Ball=$8 for Province (I really just wanted to use Ball here... Death Cart is just too strong.

I think Procession and Death Cart can get a Colony? Ten from Death Cart, two Copper, -$1 Coin Token?

EDIT: And you can use Alms on the Mission turn to gain a second Tunnel.

Meaning, I think the current record for most VP at the end of turn two is the above 19... One Colony, one Duchy, two Tunnels and two Estates.

Puzzles and Challenges / The Death of Dominion Picture Trivia
« on: April 24, 2015, 03:34:55 am »
A new expansion set of Dominion metadata has led to more Dominion Picture Trivia!

In this game, the names of exactly two Dominion cards are entered into Google Image Search, and an image is chosen from among the front page results. You then work backwards from the images to figure out what the original pairs of cards were.

In this round, twelve cards [EDIT: and Events, of course. Still getting used to the new paradigm.] from Dominion Adventures have been paired with twelve cards from the other sets to generate 24 images, all according to the following rules:

-Each of the 24 card names is used in exactly two pairs.

-Each card pair is one Adventures card paired with one non-Adventures card.

-No pairs are repeated.

For some images, there may be more than one workable pair of card names.  But only one set of 24 will satisfy all the criteria.

Who will be the first to correctly name all 24 pairs? [EDIT: it was crlundy]

Turn one buy Stonemason, overpay to gain Graverobber and Inn.

Turn one Save a Copper. Turn two six Coppers, Borrow, Token.

Turn one -- 5 Copper, Token,  Buy Borrow,  buy Traveling Fair, top-deck Rebuild, Copper.
Turn two -- Rebuild, 3 Copper. Rebuild Estate to Duchy. Buy Borrow, Mission.
Mission Turn -- Two Estates, Rebuild,  One Copper. Rebuild Duchy to Province.
(Governor works similarly: buy Governor instead of rebuild, gain Gold, remodel Gold on Mission turn.)
