Counting House is the worst card.

Edit: Well actually Curse is the worst card, counting house is just the worst card not in every game.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Salvager CCCS Decision?

not to entirely hijack the discussion, but this is related to something else i wanted to post about.  that being how to play remake/steward and establishing trashing priority.  of course it will vary some depending on the 4/5 cards available and overall strategy, but some guidelines might be useful for those who can crunch the numbers and run a sim or two.

im thinking especially of:
steward, 4 copper - gold or trash two copper
remake, 2 copper, 2 estates - you are likely not buying anything this turn, so do you trash two copper and thin the deck so you can cycle the remake a little quicker, or boost your buying power by getting two silver?  or one of each?

i guess you can throw upgrade into the discussion as well.
You generally want to trash the estates to boost your buying power, but in rare circumstances, trashing the coppers first is defensible.

About steward, it depends on what your midgame plan is and whether there are good 2s.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Duchess
« on: October 26, 2011, 10:10:43 pm »
In a trash-light/no +actions game, I've been willing to grab a duchess or two with my duchies in the lategame, since all the extra duchies reduce the possibility of my terminals colliding and a near-vanilla terminal silver is fine at that point.

Jack of all trades actually seems like a fairly good counter to torturer as well. You can take one curse, discard a bunch, and then play jack, trashing the curse and drawing cards.

OP: I retract my statement about opening Ambassador/Ambassador, although I would still recommend you glance at my game, as I feel I played it rather well, even if I did not have two :D
From skimming the game, your play seemed fine. Your opponent, however, was buying a menagerie on turn 3 and buying steward over ambassador and then never trashing with the steward. The main reason to go for double ambassador is because you're assuming the other person is getting ambassadors as well and ambassador snowballs pretty hard once you start to fall behind. If they don't, I guess one might be better? I don't know, that situation does not come up very frequently for me.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards That Combo With Tunnel Reaction
« on: October 22, 2011, 12:33:18 pm »
I really, really like tunnel/warehouse, since the warehouse is cheap and cycles fairly quickly. The first time I ever played with Tunnel, it was a game with both warehouse and lookout, and there were only 6 gold left in the gold pile at the end of the game.

On an unrelated note, vault can also allow you to discard tunnel from your hand and library can't make you discard it from your deck.

Game Reports / Ambassador Hell
« on: October 21, 2011, 10:20:04 am »
Oh, Ambassador. You are an amazing card, but I don't entirely understand how to play you(nor do I like playing you). That combination of features lead to this, one of the strangest games of dominion I've ever played.

After opening with the obligatory pair of ambassadors, I was originally planning on going for a normal game and eventually getting golds or something. Munchausen, however, had other plans, and after he grabbed the third ambassador I became too afraid of falling behind in the ambassador war and grabbed more ambassadors. The result was a game where getting to anything above 4 was a challenge(the first card costing more than 4 bought was my hoard on turn 32), and a game that was hilarious to play once, but would probably be horrible to ever play again.

Random thoughts:
-Warehouse is not very good with ambassador since you end up down a card. It became a much better card for me around turn 30 when I stopped trying to win the ambassador war and just started to try to buy and play expensive cards.
-Bureaucrat and Saboteur are terrible cards, but probably would've been great in this game. I remember seriously considering getting a saboteur sometime in the first half of the game and not doing it; in retrospect, that was definitely a mistake.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What's the strategy against this set?
« on: October 16, 2011, 04:05:56 pm »
I would say you got unlucky, but also that you should've bought witch; it's very good in chapel decks because your deck is relatively thin, letting you play it more frequently. It's also a good card in general.

I'm always a little insulted when my opponent vetoes treasure map on a board where clearly any halfway decent player is not going to buy treasure map.

For what it's worth: I play in "veto mode: don't care" mode because I literally don't care: if you want to veto cards, that's great for you, but except for this week when I've been trying to make sure not to veto the one Hinterlands card there, I always click the "veto random card" link myself. So don't read too much into others' veto choices :)
Treasure Map gets vetoed a lot, actually. It's definitely not just random in my experience.

It's unfortunate, I actually like treasure map and think it's a good card in certain circumstances.

I think your old Lycanthrope was actually completely fine. This one probably is too, although both are pretty good I think.

I corrected it just as you were posting :P

Another question...is it better to trash a Silver and gain 3, or trash a Copper and gain a Silver during your Buy Phase?
Depends on what you would buy instead and what your deck looks like, I imagine. I suspect that usually, trash silver=>+3 silver is better, though.

I used to dislike both Harvest and Tribute. Harvest seems like it could easily skip your best cards
Without any information on where in your deck your best cards are, it's as likely to get you closer to them as it is to mill them.

True. I guess, after further thought, I just found it boring. I didn't really consider the cycling benefit, and would prefer action cards to give more than just $. My point was, I didn't like it, but having used it a couple of times now, it's growing on me. Still not convinced on Tribute though.
I don't care for tribute either, it's usually too random for my taste. I was largely responding to the "what if I mill good cards" argument; I've seen it too many times in M:tG, and it's a bit of pet peeve of mine.

I like harvest; it's not amazing but I think it's slightly underrated.

While I still disagree with the comparison with Witch makes the card bad. A Fishing Village is better than Village, period.
I have bought village over fishing village. It is very rare(and quite possibly was incorrect), but it can happen. Being strictly worse is not a good thing.

Your new Lycanthrope seems fine, although it's definitely on the strong side.

Both those games seem fine to me. In the first one, you have 6*6+2*6+3+3*1+5*-1=36+12+3+3-5=49, and allfail has 5*12+6*1+3*2+2*1+1*2-1=60+6+6+2+2+1-1=76 points in the second one.

Don't know if this it what mith meant, but in the first game, the mith's graph for score clearly exceeds 50, and in the code you have
Code: [Select]
"scores": {
        "Noquar": 43,
        "mith": 49
      },
      "label": "mith-turn-27"
    },
for the last turn, and
Code: [Select]
   "scores": {
        "Noquar": 43,
        "mith": 55
      },
      "label": "end-game"
    }
for game-end.
Oh. I didn't look at the graphs at all, just at the scores at the top.

Usually I just veto a random card.

I feel like I tend to do poorly in veto games, so maybe I should be doing something else.

General feels like it's at best +2 cards/+1 $, which seems more like a 4. Since it's not even always going to be that, I don't think it would be a particularly good 4.

The others seem fine, I think.

Mercury:

Um...Militia?  This card is just about strictly worse, and MUCH worse.  They get to pick 4 cards out of 6 instead of 3 out of 5?  And if they have more than 5 they don't even discard down to 4?  Cool name though.
It's a treasure.

My main fear with mercury is some sort of engine deck laying down 3+ of these during the buy phase and locking everyone else out of the game.

I like the idea of Township but it's not a village at all, since it can't net you actions. Functionally, it reminds me of menagerie/wishing well more than any other card. Also as WW said, it's probably a little too good, especially in the early game.

Exhaust is like a familiar with a source that takes forever to run out and doesn't require a potion. Seems pretty good for me.

This card would have supplemental rule clarification (like other cards sometimes do), which would explain that piles do not have to have equal number of cards, there must be at least one card in the pile (or it isn't pile)
I'm pretty sure Fact or Fiction lets you split 5-0, not that I have any idea why anyone would want to.
Also, I think Fool's Choice will usually be worse than Envoy now, not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

This was a fun game. I decided to get a bunch of Festivals and Quarries, hoping to get a ton of torturers later, which I don't think was ideal. So after 16 turns, chwhite was up 26 to -2, and in a position to end the game in 1-2 turns. Then everything came together...
