Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion: Barracks - Three fan cards
« on: December 22, 2011, 01:55:53 am »
I think Archery Range is pretty much perfect in terms of power level, actually; thinking about it a little more, it might be better than cartographer since you choose which card to draw. It is similar to cartographer, but that should be fine; cutpurse and militia are also very similar, for example.

At the very least, Ballista needs to be a terminal silver, although I don't think I'd usually buy it even if it was. The effect feels really weak to me.

I do think Cadet needs a nerf, there's no reason to buy a 3 or 4 action instead of a cadet when they're in the kingdom.

Archery range is really similar to Cartographer; I suspect it's slightly worse.

If I'm buying actions in my opening, I'll always buy cadets instead.

Ballista seems horrible; there is no way that effect is worth $4, a card, and an action.

Game 5: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/20/game-20111220-140117-73ee6124.html

I thought RisingJaguar played better than I did overall for sure, but Game 6 was incredibly frustrating.

Also, it was a really interesting set of games, with no two games being all that similar. I'd love to hear criticism of how to play these sets.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Stables vs Lab

I suspect you want a mix; I'd probably grab 2-3 Stables and then start buying labs.

Maybe once you get like 4 labs(assuming you want more lab effects), grab another stable? I'm not really sure.

I'm afraid Farmland doesn't quite work that way.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards You Horribly Misjudged
« on: December 20, 2011, 12:12:57 pm »
Since I've actually understood how the game works:

IGG: "Why not just buy a witch instead of this stupid, bad silver? Aren't I clogging up both decks at the same speed"
Jack: "Wow that's a lot of words for something that really doesn't give me a whole lot."
Goons: "It's just kind of a better militia, right?" To my credit, I managed to figure this one out on my own
Governor: I misread it horribly at first and now I buy it all the time. I don't feel like I know how to play it though
Tactician: "Discard my hand? Why would I want to do that?"
Possession: "I steal their turn, that must mean this card is amazing!"
Mint: "You mean when I buy it, I can trash all my coppers?! Wow!"
Wharf: "+2 cards? That's it? Smithy gives me 3!"
I misread Farmland about 3 times
I thought Haggler, Develop, and Oasis were really good at first.

That's enough for now.

Council Room Feedback / Re: 11 Fool's Gold, -1 Hamlets
« on: December 20, 2011, 12:02:24 pm »
I think CR just tracks the number of gain events vs the number initially in the supply. Initially there were 0 hamlets in the supply, and then you bought one, so -1. You see it all the time with Black Market and tournament. As for FG, I think what happens is that 11 FG were gained over the course of the game because of the one stolen by thief. I've had a game where 11 hunting parties were gained thanks to ambassador/possession; sounds like the same idea.

Bridge/NV can have trouble getting up to 5, and I'm not convinced that Stash is better than just buying another bridge.

Adventurer and Council Room are cards I buy too much. My "effect with" adventurer is very high! It's just that I still shouldn't be buying it. That's a hard lesson to learn. We should all check this site more often!

I thought that a high "Effect with" means that when you buy it you win more often than normal and a low "Effect without" means that you shouldn't have ignored it.

Quote from: CouncilRoom
"Win Rate with" is the number of Win Points per game you get when you buy or gain at least one of this card.
"Win Rate without" is the number of Win Points per game you get when you never buy or gain the card.
You're getting "effect with" and "win rate with" mixed up.

Imagine there was some hypothetical card that was completely horrible, and isotropic as a whole had a 0.1 win rate with it. Now imagine you are a player who has an overall winrate of 1.30, and you have a win rate with this card of 0.3. Your win rate with it is horrible(0.3), but your effect with is actually very high since you do so much better than the average player who buys it when you do buy it.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Thought experiment: No treasure

Library-type cards would also be pretty insane.

Edit: Mine and Mint would be worse, since after you mine/mint something, unless you've played a village you can't play your new treasure.

I'm wondering if that board has a border village/Governor/Bridge deck with steward(and maybe spice merchant) for trashing, or if messing around with all that is just worse than remodeling BVs.

Because I have to admit, I would probably try for that. I don't really like remodel engines, and I do like Bridge decks.

Wishing Well is not a particularly good card, but it's remarkably underrated.

It's also not particularly bad to pull out of the BM.

Just for fun, I thought I'd see how this would work for isotropic as a whole.

Overall Winrate with(for isotropic as a whole):

Best(ignoring Prizes, colonies on the board):
$6 Grand Market
$5 Mountebank, Witch, Ill-Gotten Gains, Hunting Party, Venture(?!), Ghost Ship, Wharf
$3P Familar
$3 Masquerade

What a nice, friendly board. I think I'd open Silver/Masquerade, and grab a mountebank early. After that it gets a little trickier. I'm pretty sure you want a second masquerade at some point, but do you want Wharf? Do you want a second Mountebank/Witch? Do you take HP over Gold(I suspect no, but I'm not sure)? I'm really not sure.

Worst:
$5 Counting House, Saboteur
$4 Thief, Coppersmith, Bureaucrat, Pirate Ship, Talisman
$3 Workshop, Chancellor
$0P Transmute

Seems like a good Pirate Ship board; grab a couple quickly, and try to build up to provinces. Not really a whole lot else to say.

Overall Winrate without(for isotropic as a whole):

Best:
Note: silver is in second here

$5 Saboteur, Highway
$4 Pirate Ship, Throne Room, Bridge, Talisman, Walled Village
$3 Black Market, Smugglers
$2P University

This actually seems like an interesting board; all it needs is a little card draw or trashing to be really strong(and you might be able to find it in the black market). I think I would try to go for some sort of Highway/TR/Bridge based deck, maybe mixing in Talisman, smugglers, and/or Walled Village. Saboteur might even  be worth getting to trash their provinces, although I think this board will be too much about one big turn.

Worst:
Colonies are present
$7 King's Court
$6 Goons, Grand Market, Nobles
$5 Mountebank, Witch, Hunting Party, Wharf
$4 Tournament
$3P Familiar

Um, Mountebank into Goons-Based deck? seems like a pretty straightforward concept, although building it might be tricky. Probably the person who wins is the first one to King's court a mountebank/witch/wharf.

Best Board:
$6P Possession
$5 Mountebank, Ghost Ship, Mandarin, Contraband
$4 Bureaucrat, Spice Merchant, Pirate Ship
$3 Chancellor
$2 Chapel

Seems like a really boring board, grab a chapel and a mountebank or two and, well, that's about it. It's interesting to me that the only cards on that list that I buy more than 65% of the time are Mountebank and Chapel, and 4 cards on it are under 10%.

Worst Board(ignoring archivist):
$6 Farmland, Border Village
$5 Cache, Inn
$4P Golem
$4 Coppersmith
$3 Develop, Scheme, Oracle
$2 Fool's Gold

This looks like a pretty bad board too, and it's filled with cards that I've only played 20-30 games with. I have no idea what I'd do here; maybe pick up a ton of fool's golds and an oracle plus a scheme or two/go big money with oracle? I don't really see anything else.

Potion cost cards in a setup with no Potion-cost cards.
isotropic, at least, won't let that happen.

On topic, cards like ironworks which are better in the early game.

Chapel/Treasure Map is actually a really good opening and probably sets you up really well to buy grand markets.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Ignoring actions
« on: December 15, 2011, 05:43:49 pm »
I didn't buy any actions in this game, and I think that it's at least debatably correct. Of course, that's a bit of cheat, since I was still using kingdom cards(venture/loan).

44
So, a couple examples of how to use those stats(or at least, of how I use them). I'm using myself, because I'm narcissistic like that(and because I know where the numbers came from). Some of what I say may be wrong, because this is largely stuff I've worked out on my own.

My win rate if copper is available is 1.28. That means that I tend to get 1.28 win points per game, and because I play almost exclusively 2-player, means I win an average of 1.28/2.00=64% of my games. Note that this has absolutely nothing to do with player skill, so the fact that it's higher than, say, chwhite's or WanderingWinder's winrates(both of whom are better than me) probably comes from a combination of me playing about 10% of my games against an IRL friend who I'm better than and playing automatch +/-20 for a long time instead of the +/-15 or +/-10 that I think both of them use.

My winrate with outpost is 1.71 and my Effect With is 3.86. Does that mean I have some insane insight into the card? Well, not really; if we look at %+, I only gain it in 18.5% of games where it's available, because I use it mostly as a win more type of card, to turn a 90% win into a 95% win when you're using minions or something, which means I get almost exclusively in games I would've won anyway.

Speaking of minion, my effect with minion is -2.10. Is it because of bad luck or something? Well, no; there's something I don't get about how to play the card, and the only reason my winrate is still >50% with it is people occasionally do silly stuff(This game probably being the best example of that, there is no way I should have won that game).

My effect without hamlet is 2.66, but my effect with is -0.56. However, I also get Hamlet in 91% of games, so what that means is that when I think my deck doesn't want hamlet, I'm usually right, but I'm not very good in games where I should be buying them(which I believe is most games).

My effect with Ambassador -0.76. That's because I've bought it a lot, but the winrate is still below what councilroom expects(which I think is my overall winrate times the winrate the population as a whole has with ambassador, so 1.28*1.04=1.33).

Dominion Isotropic / Re: People to avoid on isotropic

I would like to add theory, rrenaud, WanderingWinder, guided, Geronimoo, ackack and Thisisnotasmile to this list. They are all horrible people who shouldn't be allowed to use the internet.
So this one time, I played against theory and he beat me said horrible, horrible things to me. Independently verified!

And when we talk about a card as an event we're talking about ... buying that card? gaining it? having it? playing it? not buying it when it's available?
Depends on which column you look at.

Game Reports / Re: Jack/Lender/Venture

Your opponent bought 11 terminals and no villages in the first 17 turns of the game. He opened with secret chamber when he had 4/3. He bought a noble brigand when he was planning on flooding his opponent's deck with coppers using mountebank.

I haven't had a chance to play much with Jack yet, but beating that is not hugely convincing for me.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2011

A minor moment of fail: in this game, I go for pirate ships, and my opponent responds with getting black markets for virtual money and using bishops to trash his money. Sounds great...except there were no villages in the game, I just started using my ships as gold, and he was stuck with like $2/turn. He resigned shortly afterwards.

I just don't understand this. Alchemist is too slow to beat straight BM, I can't imagine KC or any of the other cards there are going to help it THAT much, and double jack is just so FAST.

The embargo kills it, but you can make a reasonable deck from alchemist/warehouse using spice trader for trashing with king's court festivals to finish. Warehouse + spice trader seem well suited generally.
Yeah, these were my thoughts. I actually dislike alchemist and think it's generally not very good, but I figured that with KC and festivals I'd have a reasonable chance of catching up and I didn't really want to play BM.

Remake BM doesn't really exist. Open Silver/Silver on that board aiming for a few Merchant Ships. That will work a lot better.
Good to know; I thought about doing that, but it's really hard for me to not open with a multicard trasher, which is something I've been trying to work on.
