As I understand the definition, to constitute a combo your entire strategy should revolve around just those cards.
So Native Village/Bridge or Beggar/Gardens are combos because you don't need to buy any other cards to win.

I disagree with that definition. Is Tournament-Province a combo? Maybe (if it isn't, it's because it's too obvious). Is Mine/Fool's Gold a combo? Maybe, I'm not sure. Is Native Village/Courtyard a combo? Yes. Are any of these two cards going to be someone's "entire strategy"? I feel like there are always levels, dimension, and depth connected with the term "strategy." I can buy two cards for their interaction (AKA: combo) and throw in half a dozen other cards along with it.

Dominion General Discussion / Name a card that fits its name
« on: April 26, 2015, 05:23:45 am »
The thread is simple: Name a card from Dominion (go ahead, throw in Promos and Adventures!) where what the card does matches up with the name of the card. No explanation is really required. One card per post; someone else must post before you post again. Have at it!

For cards that particularly do not fit the name of the card, use a strikethrough when naming it.

I'll start us off.

Not miss-clicks but I have a couple of times tried to be too clever for my own good when attempting to end games.

Game 1
I had a slight lead and there was 1 province remaining. Unfortunately I only had 6 to spend. I then had the bright idea that I could buy Farmland, trash the province in my hand and gain the last province that way :-[. My opponent bought that last province on his next turn and won.

Unless "slight" means 4 or more points, then it wouldn't have mattered if you knew the exact wording of Farmland and bought a Duchy instead.

A lead of 3 would still matter as second player.

A lead of 3 would still matter as first player.

Dominion: Adventures Previews / Re: No Smithy?

Has there been a set before with nothing so close to a smithy variant?  I guess it's Haunted Woods or Ranger, but both don't quite feel right.  (Not complaining, just interesting)

Well there isn't exactly a Smithy variant in sets like Seaside, Alchemy, etc. so...

My gut tells me to avoid Potion/University.  Procession can be used to do everything University does -- gain cards and give + actions.  You'd be fine Processing away WMs for actions because the game is not going to last long -- so you don't need to hold on to more than a few WMs.  I would go for some sort of Procession-WM-Council Room-Militia thing, adding in a Vault for the large majority of my economy (i.e. after playing a Council Room or 2).  Feed your Procession with 2 $4 cards each buy (not just 1, as you mention) via Stonemason, or even from Stonemasoning a $5 into 2 $4s.

I would definitely go for University.

When you don't get your Cities leveled up until you are down 5 Provinces to 0.

Death Cart/Vineyards is nice. Clearly you wouldn't build a deck around it, but if you have a strong Vineyards deck anyway, not only does Death Cart pump up your Vineyards by 1 each time (as long as Ruins remain), but they can help you end the game since you only need 5 of them to empty a pile.

Feels like a nombo to me.

How come the app doesn't appear after I install it? Is there another step? I am using chrome. It says installed and "activated" but it doesn't show up under apps or anything.

I'm not clear on what you're looking at.  See the attached screenshots and let me know how yours differ.

Oh hey it's working now! Either way I thought it would appear under my Chrome App Launcher icon. But I think I needed to restart the computer or something before it would work. That might have been it.

Game Reports / Re: Dominion VP ....glitch?
« on: April 19, 2015, 07:19:38 pm »
If the game ends normally, are duration cards which are in play counted for gardens?

I imagine they are. The instructions are very clear about what cards are returned to the deck at the end of the game. I assume this glitch only occurs because the game doesn't actually end, so it never tries to return those cards to the deck. I at least have never noticed an incorrect score for Alt VP cards.

I think the question was asking about more the actual rules of the game, than the online programming. Is that correct? I guess there are no rules for "resigning" IRL..

Thank you. I am just trying to figure it all out yet.  I am very still lost and have not got a great grasp yet. I have not joined the online Dominion but have been considering it. I just want to make sure I have a decent grasp first. I still look at the cards and end up buying by impulse and not with a plan. Some point I will hopefully have it start to click.

I would stick to IRL and grab a couple expansions like Seaside before you try the online Dominion.

EDIT: Not for lack of skill, there are plenty of new and experienced alike online. It's just that you will start winning against your wife because you learn the game too quickly online since the games go faster.

Will make a better version once a bigger file size image comes out.

Where did you get this image? Somewhere other than the previews?

Ferry + Trashing attack -- place the -$2 cost token on Province or some other juicy target that is normally too expensive to hit.

Ferry only works on Actions.

Oops.  So scratch Province and only have it on some other juicy target... I guess there are fewer of those, but there are still some!

Where is the full list of cards?

71
Province and Gold.

The Provinces give you VP while the Gold supplies you with the coins for other important cards like Chapel, which is actually a really good card.

Are the cards and art all posted somewhere?

Scrying Pool + Saboteur
Scrying Pool + Knights

Scrying Pool + Swindler

Keep cards on top you want to hit. After the Scrying Pools run out you can use Swindler to remove Scrying Pools from their deck (and there's probably no other $2P card on the board, so they won't even get anything in return).

I feel like the margin of benefit for you minus the benefit for him in removing Scrying Pools from the game (instead of Swindling one of his other cards) is negligible at best, under almost all scenarios.

Game Reports / Re: Dominion VP ....glitch?
« on: April 18, 2015, 12:00:47 pm »
You have 4 Provinces, 2 Harems, and a Farmland, totaling 30 points. Your opponent has 3 Provinces, 6 Nobles, and 7 VP chips, totaling 37 points. He played 2 Nobles on his turn before you resigned. The log displays your opponent as incorrectly having 33 points because he played 2 Nobles.

When the game ended, the screen showed that I was only down 33-30. Are you saying it would have shown that I was ahead 29-30 if he played 2 more Nobles?

Yes.

This obviously doesn't matter since Resignation is the overriding factor on who won. But it does look weird.

I guess this doesn't come into play much because VP cards are rarely played to be stuck in such a limbo.

Rules Questions / Re: "Naming" a card
« on: April 18, 2015, 10:16:24 am »
But do you really "buy" events or do you spend a buy to use its action? I don't think you keep the card, so therefore you did not purchase it.

Yes, it's something you buy.  It fully fits the Dominion definition of "buy".  It's just not something you gain.

An Event is something you can buy in your Buy phase that isn't a card. You pay your $, you use up a Buy, and something happens.

To be honest it was almost an actual question. Donald's preview page was tl;dr at the time.

But you don't buy the card.. you buy the Event.
