Dominion General Discussion / Re: Interesting Kingdoms with Prince?
« on: June 16, 2014, 10:33:28 am »
Chapel, Village, Masquerade, Bridge, Remake, Saboteur, Goons, Possession, King's Court, Prince

I originally posted this in the "Fun Kingdoms" thread facetiously, fully expecting that it would be the least fun game of Dominion of all time. But looking at it now, I'm interested in it, since the pin can be blocked. There's also stuff with KC KC B B B, but KC saboteur and goons action could stop that. And then there's possession.
Thoughts?

Oh, sorry, I forgot. I'll edit my post.
Ditto for me.

I think my favorite 4 cost would in fact be something like a simple Smithy or Envoy.
Starting every turn with so many cards makes everything much easier.
I agree. It probably give you the chance to set up another Prince on a +Buy card.
+Buy certainly seems like it would be pretty important in some capacity in any Prince game--you have to make up the lost turns buying and connecting prince. Also why Colony games are better for Prince--you have more opportunities and more turns to make up the points.

I anticipate that prince will be much MUCH stronger in Colony games.
Also, is it just me, or does the guy in the picture look scarily close to baron?

Point taken. I don't know what would be best here though, truly. The thing about this board is The pin is blocked by Prince of Masquerades. Then there could be a way for KC KC B B B, but heavy saboteur and goons action could throw a wrench in that….. And then there's also something with KC-Possession that could help you out.

(Hint for those who may not have figured it out: Possible strategy in the spoiler text.)

From the "BoM as Feast?" thread:

Throne on a Band as a one-shot has a special ruling, unique to that situation, and that special ruling is why it works that way, in the technical sense. And the reason for that ruling was that the rulebook didn't address it, and I wanted it to work like people would think it would, and the other option (not doing anything the second time) was crazy counterintuitive.

True enough. I guess it boils down to the whole Procession vs Throne Room thing again, i.e. with Procession, you gain a Six coin action according to the rule book, even though it should have "locked in" to what the card was just like throne room.

I know that, but why does it matter? Band of Misfits tells you that you choose a card for it to impersonate when you "Play this", not when you put it into play.
"This is that card until it leaves play"

Yep. And just in general; you can play highway and have the extra coin, whereas you can't do the same thing with peddler, since it will just get lost with poor house

Poor House is what I was going for. I don't really see how Swindler is affected, can you explain?

EDIT: Oh, I see, yeah, I meant assuming that both cost the same.

Gain is always cost dependent, yes?

Easy puzzle: What is a case, besides all those possession/fairground type cases (as well as king's court, throne room, procession, prince, etc.) where highway is better than peddler on a board with no plus buy or cost-dependents?

Presumably it is also reduced in cost--Bridge makes it clear that it affects "all cards", which I assume includes set aside ones too.

This is actually pretty good, given that it would be set out with the other ruins/a looter.

The card does seem kind of swingy (is that the right word?), given that even if both players go for it, it will be much much better for anyone who activates it even just a few turns ahead. No more so than some other cards, I suppose though.
The comparison to Tournament is pretty good.

Quite similar, given that both hinge upon getting an 8$ card and then linking it with a 4$ card. But I anticipate that with Prince, the effect will be far, far more exaggerated.

How often should you pass on playing your Prince?  It's effectively a one shot, so do you play it with that spent Witch in your hand to at least get the extra draw, or did you hold on to it hoping for a better pairing next shuffle?

In this example, it can do only cards costing up to four, so there's that. But in general, I would assume that when you buy a prince, you have at least generally some idea of what card(s) you want to use it on--no sense using it on something like a pawn when you have a smithy in your deck. And much of it, I'm sure, is based off of how much of the game is left.

I think I should probably say this in the form of the unpopular opinion puffin meme.... but I think that Possession makes for interesting and unique games of Dominion.

I have always been mildly annoyed when it shows up, and this game was indeed long and at times painful. But the decisions made were really, really interesting, and made for a pretty incredible game--planning becomes so important when each player takes 4 turns in a row.

Warning: this one is grueling (don't try IRL), but still exceedingly interesting to play.

I am blown away by the immediate and thoughtful responses--thank you! In retrospect, it does seem pretty obvious that the engine was the way to go. If you don't mind helping me on another game.....:

So, this board has al kinds of good stuff--marauder, hunting party, peddler, counterfeit. I figrue that Hunting Party is the way to go, although Marauder provides a nice counter to it. I open Marauder/Silver, and go for hunting parties. I throw in counterfeit for trashing, but i realize that counterfeit/spoils is quite nice, and so never end up trashing anything. I end up winning, but I don't know if I really had a good idea of when to do anything, or what the exact best option to go with is at any given time. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

So, I am a quite mediocre player, and, being a long time lurker on the forum, decided it was high time I post a game and get some advice.

This one was beggar/duke (me) versus city stack (opponent). I'm not so sure if I chose the right strategy, or my opponent just played his badly. I open beggar/beggar, and end up getting 5 duchies, and 7 dukes. The game ends on estates piling out. My questions:
A. Was my strategy the way to go? and
B. If so, how did I misplay?
