Dominion General Discussion / Re: Disciple vs. Teacher
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:13:00 pm »
If I don't forget to swap out my Travelers, I can get Teacher very quickly as my opponent is usually less skilled than me IRL (excluding tournaments). So getting an early Teacher is super good for me, and I think Teacher is good. Slow does not mean bad. I mean, look at Scout/Great Hall. It's slow, but it gets the job done every single time. If you don't believe me, then:  http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/promise

I am in my room, sitting on my computer, browsing F.DS. I scroll down the page, innocently, oblivious to the trap that lies in wait. Then it happens. Another post by Roadrunner7671. Another Scout joke.

I freeze. Sweat brings to form on my forehead, on my body. A sense of nausea rises in my gut.

“Please,” I whimper. “Please. Not today. Oh god, not today. Not another Scout joke. Please.”

I am in a small room, deep beneath the ground. The walls and floors are stainless steal. I am strapped to a table. Around me are the instruments of torture. Needles and blades and pulleys are visible in the edge of my vision, but these are merely the physical tools. It is the words that I fear, the words that I can't keep out of my brain. Roadrunner7671 stands above me. His expression is not unkind.

“Please,” I say, the blood pooling in my mouth. “Please.”

“If you want a picture of the future,” he says, “Imagine a forum poster reading a Scout joke- forever.”

I make a sound that might be laughter or might be sobbing. Because I've seen the truth. Roadrunner7671's relentless onslaught is only the culmination of our own sins. He is a dark mirror, reflecting our true selves back to us. We balk from him because we balk from ourselves. We have all made Scout jokes in our moments of weakness.

We are all Roadrunner7671.

I am standing on a desolate wasteland. The wind that howls past my ears is a voice that whispers my failings to me. In the distant heavens I can catch glimpses of a better world, a better forum, where there is quality discussion of Dominion strategy. I know that it is only there to torment me. I can never reach, not because of something external that blocks my path, but because of who I am, because of who I will always be.

“Please,” I say. “I want to change. I want to believe that I can change. I want this to not be what is true. I want this to not be who I am.

“Please.

“Please.”

Behold, the most eloquent and powerful thread derailment in history.  Truly magnificent and hilarious and worth it.

and the quips really tie the threads together.

Feedback / Re: A place for more moderated discussion
« on: November 13, 2015, 03:23:32 am »
Yuma proposed a cool idea.  Let's do it.
A dominion debate, in which, two people ( lets call them Fets and Cim) meet together in a thread to debate, let's say "which card is better." Both forum members are assigned a side and then need to follow the rules of debate to try and demonstrate their side

I'll propose a format.   Please guide me where to post this proposal if there's a more appropriate place.

Please see the debate format below.  I'm sure there are problems with the proposed format, including the incredibly bland topic statement and choices. I would be happy to have suggestions, though I hope to avoid lengthy permutations of format discussions before trying out a debate.

Is anyone else interested to see a debate like this happen? Also, please call out or PM me if you'd be willing to be the debater for either side (but don't start marking arguments on either side yet please).

Possibly the correct answer to the topic question is obvious, and then I get to be embarrassed for suggesting it, and we can pick something else.  I was trying to create something clearly defined, with the added benefit that we can check simulations.

A post at the top of the debate thread will introduce the debate, list the debate rules/format and schedule, and the request that people other than the debaters not post in the thread before the end of the debate.

Debate Format:
Each of two debaters will write opposing posts at an agreed time (scouts honor not to read the other post first) beginning with
"In a 2 player Province and Estates game, where 'Rabbles Buyer' can buy no kingdom cards other than Rabbles, and 'Ghost Ships Buyer' can buy no kingdom cards other than Ghost Ships.  I would choose to be Rabbles/Ghost Ships buyer because:  ..."

The post is expected to contain only formatted text.  Maximum 2000 characters.

Each debater has one hour to write a rebuttal post, also max 2000 characters, to refute the post of the opposing debater, and otherwise support his argument as he/she see fit.

Debate Posts may not include simulation results (but these will be included in post-debate discussion).

After 1 hour has passed from the scheduled debate time, or both debaters have posted rebuttals, others can (will hopefully) start posting in the thread, and those posts can be further arguments on either side, discussion of the good and bad arguments, who articulated their argument more effectively overall, or pictures of otters.

At or near this time, a related poll will be opened (open for 48 hours), and linked in the thread, which will determine the winner of the debate.  The poll choices are:
- I'd buy only Rabbles over only Ghost Ships, and the Rabble argument was more effective at influencing my opinion (Credit Rabbles Debater)
- I'd still buy only Rabbles over only Ghost Ships, but the Rabble argument was not more effective or I have no opinion on the effectiveness of the arguments (Credit Ghost Ship Debater)
- I'd buy only Ghost Ships over only Rabbles, and the Ghost Ship argument was more effective (Credit Ghost Ship Debater)
- I'd still buy only Ghost Ships over only Rabbles, but the Ghost Ship argument was less effective or I have no opinion on the effectiveness of the arguments (Credit Rabbles Debater)
- I still don't know which I would choose, but the Rabble argument was more effective (Credit Rabbles Debater)
- I still don't know which I would choose, but Ghost Ship argument was more effective (Credit Ghost Ship Debater)
- I still don't know which I would choose, and both arguments were ineffective or I don't know which argument was more effective

When I read the question "Would you be interested in some form of moderated discussion on F.DS?", the answer is yes.  I like reading about dominion strategy.  If there were moderated threads about strategy, I would be interested in reading them and possibly posting.

But overall, I like what we have now.

And so, it does make me nervous when I read Donald X's saying he has had experiences of one or more forums/communities he was a part of ultimately be destroyed by going in this direction.  If that's a real risk at all, I don't want to risk it.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: VP count bug when resigning
« on: November 05, 2015, 04:24:29 pm »
Count me among the people who feel that dev team should not spend time on this.

I agree with a point made earlier that it's not always clear what the score 'should' be in these scenarios.  What if you resign when masqueraded cards are in transit between players. Please don't try to answer that, it's just an example of the potential issues involved.

I play mostly online 2 player and that certainly makes it easier. Mic mentioned scannong the log, and tips for even doing that more efficiently would also be helpful.
Would like to take this opportunity to express that I was happy to see that in the new Post-Goko client application there is key word highlighting which will help. Didn't notice if shuffles are highlighted but if so that would help a lot.. And I believe the scrolling bug is finally fixed

« on: October 22, 2015, 09:36:44 pm »
I know deck tracking has been discussed but I think the advice was mostly just to practice tracking your deck and you'll get better.

I just feel like there's got to be some systems way better than what I do now, which is basically 'hey.. I know I bought a kings court, but I haven't had a rdiculously good hand with it recently at all...  Ok only five cards left in my draw now so it's pretty likely to be drawn dead if I play smithy with my last action right now.' That's ok but really only works for up to like 3 key cards max for me.

Also, I can track vp when the counter is off ok, but like feoda points and vineyard points and how many estates each person has... Sometimes I spend a lot of energy trying track those and get them wrong anyway.

Would appreciate any systems people have that they'd like to share.

IGG is rarely ignorable. as it rapidly depletes 2 piles, something no other card does.

A lot of people think this is true, but it super-isn't true.
...

It always makes me sad when you hate on the IGG Rush, Adam.  I never understood the card at all till you destroyed me with it when we met IRL.  I learned then, and I still find it to be true, without at least ok trashing you will lose if you IGGnore.  Buying apprentices is not gonna deal with all those purples.

I see your point about having so many silvers in a colony game.  In the game i mentioned where i got 6 silvers on turn 3 and platinum on turn 4, i kept gaining silvers and just drained provinces and before the opponent could get massive engine up and running. It seemed to work out pretty well.

The other day i was lucky enough to do
buy ironworks.
 buy watchtower.
gain feodum with ironworks and trash it and also buy feodum and trash it and put 5 silvers on deck.
buy platinum on turn 4.

Game Reports / Re: Prince games!

Combo: Prince/scavenger + 1 draw card and 1 or more gold or platinum

Just had this game, my first prince game ever.
http://dominionlogs.goko.com/20140906/log.50803be051c34ca080a52dd6.1410029392411.txt

Admittedly had some great shuffle luck in the beginning.  I was thinking of the prince coppersmith thing, but instead princed my scavenger
Ended up with 7 provinces, 2 duchies, and 5 estates in 18 turns.

It plays out like this:
Prince the scavenger.  afterwards:
every turn, put the draw card on top if it's not already in hand.
otherwise, put gold on top and draw your gold with the drawer in hand.

turns where you play the draw card and draw the gold, you should usually be able to buy province.
if not, you can still buy other victory point cards without too much worry of stalling.

Junk Dealers can make an excellent target.  In many games you get several and then they outlive their usefulness, and they can be turned directly into a provinces.

Here's a recent example

Game 1: liopoil first, liopoil wins http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?/20140708/log.516cceeae4b082c74d79f558.1404863201192.txt

we go for different BM strategies here. I think mine was probably better given it was a colony game.

Catacombs is crying at its neglect. You buy 7 Gold (!) before putting in a Rabble. You want a Catacombs after like 1 or 2 Gold, maybe even before the first. Your deck has so much money that you can afford to dip for Provinces sooner as well, your 5th and possibly 4th Platina should be Provinces. These Jack-BM decks on Colony boards can often win by just running out the Provinces after they take a few Colonies. Your opponent needs the terminal draw badly as well, Cartographer doesn't cut it, +3 cards is great with all those FG.
Here my plan was fools golds, hence baron and its +buy.  As liopoil said, probably not good in a cony game since even 3 fgs doesnt get you a colony.
I was too afraid of silvers in this colony game.  Even from the beginning i was wary of Jack cause i didn't want the silvers..
Mic Q: What are your thoughts on Jack and buying silvers in a non engine colony game?
Anyways, lesson learned... Just drawing fgs with Catacombs wouldve been better than trying to filter out everything else with only couple Cartographers.

An engine mirror, he goes too heavy on foragers I think. I win the stables split 6-4, he wins the forager split 6-4. However the stables are more important because six foragers are worthless if you can't draw them. I get a big lead, but in the end I don't buy enough coppers and get a bit unlucky I think and stall for three turns, which let him pull out the win. Perhaps my turn 14 should have been a duchy.

I think both players have too many Foragers. It can produce $4, but you need two cards to do it, so it's not that great at making money. It's less consistent than Silver because you need Forager and a suitable trashing target. And the Foragers make Stables less consistent by removing most of your treasures and not being treasure themselves. Once you've got the early lead you should trash out your extra Foragers to protect your consistency.
No doubt too many foragers.
At some point I felt so behind that I felt the only chance for me was some kind of crazy forager shenanigans.
