the problem here is that it's not hard to screw up the endgame with this pin, so some players just wait it out all the way and hope you hang yourself

agree w/ jeebus, i've done this and it's the least fun i've had playing this game

live now with an amazing soundtrack for an amazingly fucked-up old PC game, will play dominion at 5:30!  league match vs. Beyond Awesome, followed by me learning the old arcade X-Men beat-em-up if you're into that sort of thing =)

link in sig as always

I think this is a feature, not a bug. Swingy games shouldn't cause such a massive ratings variance if you have bad luck against a bad player.

i can see why you could argue for this.  it's just interesting that in practice it could potentially lead to someone "cheating" the system by ducking top players.  probably would come up more in a larger game, like how you always hear about boosters on xbox live or w/e

56
hello, kind of a long story here but i thought this was interesting and worth discussing...

so sometimes i can't find anybody within 1000 rating points of me, and i just set matchmaking to play anyone.  a lot of these people will gain you like 5 points if you win and cost you like 80 if you lose, and dominion is a swingy enough game that your MF rating will drop like a rock if you play enough of these folks.

however, even on my worst losing streaks to these players, my iso rating wouldn't drop much at all!  i'd always remain quite a bit higher than i was at my lowest points when i was just playing evenly-matched opponents.  i suspect this is because i was still winning a much higher % of games overall, and perhaps you could argue that's a better way of doing it.  it just doesn't feel right to me that if i cared about nothing but iso, i should dodge Titandrake and spend all night playing against WeedGoku69.  i'm curious if others have noticed this and if i'm alone in feeling this way...

hello everyone, i've been thinking about making comparison threads to help us better gauge the strength of different cards/strategies.  this one occurred to me after a recent game where i tried the latter and got destroyed by the former.  this was with one of the $5 Smithy variants, Journeyman or Catacombs i think.

basically, i've heard Wandering Winder (IIRC) argue that any decent terminal draw-BM strat should beat a Minion stack if there's no other support for the Minions.  "support" in this case means other virtual coin or any trashing.  the argument is that your deck will choke on green in a hurry and you won't be able to play enough of those Minions for money, but now i'm not so sure.

i think in the BM seat, you may have to green even earlier than normal so the Minion player won't have time to get all 10 of them.  in the game i mentioned, my opponent got all 10 and hardly had a problem reaching $8.  that still sounds so sketchy though, and it really makes me question that advice.

any thoughts?

the treasure trove hype goes hand-in-hand with the gear-BM hype, i think. not big on either.  also agree with seprix & beyond awesome on swamp hag, we may finally have a worse junker than sea hag or IGG

Fantastic! I spent a long time thinking about the best possible way to do the interface.

I actually quite like the MF interface. Not too much crap, but also not too little.

it's mainly visual stuff i (and seemingly others) have a problem with.  events not being distinct enough from cards, the animations, the new garish blue circles around the numbers...

alright, new stream layout seems to work so i'll do a few ranked games!  link in sig as always

also, i'm trying my Dominion emotes: FailTact (tactician facepalm), SCSNsFav (silver), DomHaggler & DomPotion (these are self-explanatory).  you need to install the FrankerFaceZ browser plugins to use or see these!

after experimenting some more, i found that i can stream the webcam & Twitch chat without blocking the actual game at all!  hopefully that doesn't screw up readability too much - will probably do a quick test today before switching to speedruns

i think you really underestimate the value of overdrawing your deck.  the strongest engines tend to be based on mid-turn gaining rather than just buying stuff (goons & bridge [troll] aside, obv), so being able to draw and play your shiny new toys without worrying about actions is practically the best thing you can get

Dominion General Discussion / Re: [solved] Junking Estates
« on: June 22, 2016, 04:52:09 pm »
yes, estates are much more painful than copper at the beginning - your main hurdle to reaching $5.  this is why salvager/apprentice/raze are often good opening buys even though they're bad copper trashers.

69
transmute works in big wharf engines where it's the only trasher, since that payload is important and your multiple buys make the potion less painful

70
with no standard villages on the board, i put the +action token on band of misfits because i thought i could play disciple on it and gain more of them.  turns out disciple gains you the card band imitates, not band itself...so i ran out the cantrip pile and couldn't use band for that anymore!  somehow i still won, lol

Dominion Articles / Re: Dominion Fundamentals
« on: June 21, 2016, 03:42:55 pm »
a common cause of my losses lately has been trying to build the biggest engine that's theoretically possible on the board, without respecting attacks/lack of trashing enough.

like in the 4-card kingdom of village, smithy, horn of plenty & embassy (well, let's add like counting house to make horn work)...i'll try for the horn megaturn and i'll get bodied by the boring crap.

this is the sort of thing that deserves an article of its own, but i mentioned it since there are plenty of exceptions to the whole "maximize payload" deal

otherwise, great stuff and thank you! =)

Game Reports / Re: "Gear BM beats lots of engines"
« on: June 20, 2016, 07:46:12 pm »
i still wonder if gear could win here by playing better, but i guess it would need bad normal luck from the doctor early on
FTFY. Seriously, go set up this kingdom and try to play your opponent's strategy. Then proceed to realize that you were absolutely screwed by whatever piece of code shuffled your opponent's deck.

I think money is the way to go here. Gear-gear-soothsayer seems like it would be optimal. That means a gear/silver opening, picking up a soothsayer and a second gear on the next shuffle.

oh, good call!  i'm still real new to gear and hadn't thought about how other terminals could work with this strat.  i can see a non-drawing one like soothsayer being good with it, but would witch be better than a third gear?

to show myself on the receiving end of this, here's another log:

http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?http://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160618/log.0.1466269615246.txt

this definitely seemed like a weaker engine than the first one in terms of scoring/pile control, which is why i tried gear.  but i guess good trashing makes soothsayer not such a slow attack, and that alone was enough (along with a bit of crossroads goodness to make greening a lot less painful).

i still wonder if gear could win here by playing better, but i guess it would need bad luck from the doctor early on

Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Qvist Rankings and Empires
« on: June 20, 2016, 03:17:56 pm »
count me in as a vote for tier lists (nice to see somebody else use "S tier", haha) and counting potion as +$2 for cost purposes

i strongly disagree with making potion +$3 because that doesn't reflect how likely you are to buy a familiar on the 2nd shuffle.  +$2 is a fairly accurate representation of that.

also this would mean the $4 group finally gets a legit S-tier card with scrying pool, and that was the only group that never truly had one.  in the $2 group i would have vineyard 4th after chapel & the travelers.  interesting to think about it this way...

75
i will still defend counting house in really bad colony slogs.  even before adventures, i ranked it above cache & harvest
