Dominion Articles / Re: Trade
« on: January 08, 2017, 07:14:47 pm »
the plain and simple point for money games is that 1 trade adds more payload to the deck than 1 gold - that is, it improves the average money density more (though you would still need some gold if it's BM with a handsize attack, obv).  and that $1 lower price point is a huge deal, particularly since trade is at its best with estates in hand.

wanna see limetime chime in cuz he just barely had rebuild in his top 100 overall.  i thought i was a bit out there, but damn

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The Dominion Cards Lists 2016 Edition

is it a Hot Taek to say that rebuild should not even be a top 10 $5 anymore? adventures' engine buffs already took it out of the top 5 imo, and 2nd edition + especially empires are going to be even worse for it.  it's just such a low-ceiling strategy, whereas something like mountebank fits into the strategies enabled by all the shiny new things. idk

oh hey i forgot this was the time of year for the thing =(

yall can blame me for peasant finishing behind page. at least this will be the last time that happens~

plenty of way way worse cards than fairgrounds in that regard, imo: king's court, tactician, outpost, goons, tournament...

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Double Jack?
« on: September 15, 2016, 05:22:28 pm »
i thought i read that one jack + 1-2 big terminal draw cards is better than double jack unless there's a handsize attack to worry about

think this was sim results posted in a random thread i don't remember now

Game Reports / Re: Missing Followers is not an auto-loss
« on: August 31, 2016, 10:36:55 pm »
i feel like princess is the best prize the most often, but steed is the 2nd best prize the most often.  and you often have to pick up steed just because you have another terminal in your hand, even if it won't be the best option in the long run.  avoiding 1 dead turn is a pretty huge deal in this game!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How good is Alchemy?
« on: August 17, 2016, 06:43:37 pm »
yea, alchemy is the most "better online than IRL" set by a mile.  easily explains why it gets the worst reviews on BGG and the like

lately i've been thinking about how widely accepted variance is in eurogames, even at the most competitive levels, compared to the utter hatred for any of it it in competitive video games.  i'm sure a number of you are familiar with smash bros. tournaments banning items since they're highly random, and top players in any game get highly frustrated if a 2-out-of-3 set doesn't determine the better player.

i wonder if a major reason for this difference is the fact that IIRC there's no big competitive eurogame with serious money on the line.  i doubt i need to tell you about the prize pools for MOBAs and the like, and that adds an extra "gut punch" angle to losses that are out of your control.

it seems like in this world, luck elements are the only way designers have managed to prevent games from getting old after extensive play.  i suspect the obvious swinginess would limit people's desire to put up money for tournaments or even a first-to-10 against one opponent (a common type of "exhibition" in fighting games).  as my entire reason for learning these games is competition, it makes me wonder just how far even a game as great as Dominion can go in that regard...

copied from my group thread (posted this a while back before i knew about the new rule):

so this is a bit early but i'll be taking a break from the league after this season.  still moderating of course. =)

Help! / Re: funkdoc's journey to 5k (& beyond)
« on: August 08, 2016, 02:32:52 pm »
sooo as those who saw my last league match know, i am more than ready for a *real* break from this goddamn game

i guess now i'm at the point where i would have to do game log analysis and such?  i've never been good at that sort of thing in any game i've played - i've always just tried to play more games and brute-force my way through any problems, but that doesn't work i guess!

i feel like this is the sort of game that's going to take me years, and i'll have to be on-and-off with it.  i should've guessed this when i saw that this game attracts the sort of people who love forum mafia; there are few things i detest more than forum mafia, to the point where you're instantly suspect in my eyes if you like it (j/k, sort of).  games should not feel like homework to me, and dominion does when you get the more complex boards.  i imagine it'll make enough sense to me eventually that this will disappear, but i'm nowhere near that point now.

i'll still be moderating the league, but this seems like the best course of action for the long term.  thank you for helping me throughout all this! =)

Let's Discuss ... / Re: empires: villa
« on: August 02, 2016, 05:09:54 pm »
Do I have to play with Villa to understand it? It's a shitty Festival. Who cares if I've played with a card or not?

And I already got everything you said before when I analyzed the card. However, did you think about how awful it is to have 5 non-drawing Villages in your deck? If it's the only village, fine, but if there's a drawing village, you won't want too many Villas. People who buy Villa are going to be mainly buying it for the extended turn, assuming there are other villages.

oh yes, wondrous guru of dominion, extending a turn totally isn't worth it!!!

actually, in a weird way, this seems comparable to procession in a governor game - short-term benefits outweighing the more obvious long-term problems that would scare away most players.  this is assuming you're turning the governors into nothing instead of adventurers, obv

the problem is that none of this works when you have to leave for work or some other commitment

sometimes i just wanna get one game in before i have to get ready, and all too often that happens to be against an asshole who does this when i have no way to fight it.  they can't hold that L like an adult so i end up having to take it instead because MAKING FUN IS GOOD AT DESIGN YALL

fuck, i can't wait for 2017..............
