Design a card or card-shaped thing that's a modified version of an official card, not as a replacement, but like Grand Market is to Market, or Young Witch to Witch.
Use an adjective or modifier + the name of the official card it's based on, like Grand Market and Young Witch do.

Clearly qualifying official cards: Grand Market and Young Witch (obvs), Old Witch, Coastal Haven, most villages (Border/Mining/Fishing/Farming/...), Devil's Workshop, Farmer's Market, Sea Witch.

Other official cards that qualify because I like being flexible/creative: Animal Fair (It has +buy so it can be considered a version of Fair), Capital City, Fool's Gold, Lost City, Family of Inventors, all the Ruins except Survivors, Overgrown Estate, Prize Goat, Silver Mine, Tragic Hero (It has "gain a treasure"), I probably missed a couple.
I'm undecided on Market Square, but I think I'd allow it (if it wasn't already a thing obvs).

Official cards that don't qualify: Fortune Hunter (not related to Hunter), Horse Traders (not related to Trader), Plateau Shepherds (not related to shepherd), Royal Blacksmith, Shanty Town, Silk Merchant, ...you get the idea...

Suggestions of adjectives or modifiers you might use: Grand/Big, Little/Minor/Tiny, Royal, Noble, Shady, Seafaring, Gilded, Buried, Undead, Distant, Mounted, etc. (but you don't have to use one of these)

Village and Merchant as your base card are discouraged. You can do a modified version of one of them, but I'd prefer you choose something else.

Using small print just for the card's name might be fun if you want to do, say, "Bored Cartographer" or something like that. Don't hesitate to use an official card with a longer name. Just don't make small print necessary for the card text.

edit: oops, I forgot to post in the designated subforum. Can this be moved in there? Or should I delete this and repost there?
edit2: I reposted in the correct place, but I can't delete this post. sorry bout that.

wow, hey thanks for the win. I post the new contest sometime before tomorrow night.

EDIT: ...such a fun but tough decision what to make the next contest...

General Discussion / Re: Movies I watched in 2023
« on: January 29, 2024, 11:05:28 pm »
I think I'll reply with a list of movies I watched in the past year. I watch a lot of movies (mostly horror and horror/comedy) partly because I don't like how the story keeps going on and on with tv shows. They don't do tv "episodes" like they used to. So I watch very few tv series, usually only shows that are contained in one or two seasons. I want a complete story without having to watch several seasons of a show. anyway, here's my list for the past year.  (leaving out the least interesting ones and probably I few others I forgot). (6/10 is kind of my average rating. It's what I end up giving most movies I don't love or hate.) These are in order of how much I liked them:
Horror and horror-comedy:
- Mama          2013    8/10   I love a good ghost story, and that's what this is.
- Fall of the House of Usher 2023  8/10  (I tend to include single season series in my movie lists, so I will here too). I tend to like Mike Flanagan's stuff (and Edgar Allen Poe too), and I was not disappointed here. Well done (despite some messed up stuff)
- Renfield   2023  8/10  Not normally into vampire movies, but I love a good horror/comedy/adventure with heart.
- Smile    2022   8/10   I like it when the characters in a horror movie investigate the problem, find the source, and fight it (even if they don't win).
- Fright Night  1985  7.5/10  a classic horror comedy. (I didn't start watching any horror until the past few years, so I missed a lot of good old ones.)
- The Conjuring III: The Devil Made Me Do It  2021  7/10  I like pretty much all of the Conjuring universe movies I've seen. This wasn't one of the best of them, but it's good.
- Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil  2017  7/10  A well done dark fantasy story from folklore. I tend to like that kind of thing.
- It        2017    7/10   I liked it, though I'm not normally into scary clowns.
- House At the End of the Street  2012  7/10   Jennifer Laurence is hot. That may have skewed my opinion on this one a little.
- The Autopsy of Jane Doe  2016   6.5/10  Pretty good, but I expected more from its ratings.
- The Wailing (S.Korean)  2016   6.5/10  Good, but a bit too long.
- REC   2007 (Spanish)   6.5/10   Pretty good found footage zombie movie.
- X    2022   6/10   Good for what it was, but nothing amazing.
- Evil Dead (Remake) 2013  6/10  I loved Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and enjoyed the Ash vs the Evil Dead series, but they played this remake straight, yet you couldn't take it very seriously with all the references to the original trilogy and how silly they were. Still pretty good.
- The Return of the Living Dead  1985  6/10  horror comedy zombies
- Llamageddon  2015  6/10  One of those "so bad, it's good" kind of movies. super low budget dumb fun.
- Wishmaster   1997   6/10   Sooo much cheesiness, but not bad. I like cheese sometimes.
- M3GAN     2022   6/10   It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect it to be. Pretty good, but not great.
- Paranormal Activity 2  2010  6/10 This (and the first one) I liked more than I expected, though still nothing special.
- Evil Dead Rise  2023  4/10  Easily the worst of the Evil Dead series imo. It didn't have what made the other ones good.
- Skinamarink  2022  3/10  I was really looking forward to this from the trailor with the very unique style. I was disappointed. They didn't do anything interesting with that style and half the time, nothing seemed to be happening or you couldn't tell what was happening.

Since most of what I watch is horror, I'll list the other ones separately:
- Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical  2022  9/10  I loved the book (yeah, I still like kids books) and liked the 90s movie. The musical was even better imo. It isn't just for kids.
- Everything Everywhere All at Once  2022  7/10  A unique and crazy adventure. Weird in a way I like (mostly).
- Gaslight     1944  7/10  A classic that I hadn't seen this till this past year.
- Leo     2023  7/10  A kids movie, but a good one.
- The Frighteners  1996  7/10  technically horror comedy but I watched it with my family and it's no scarier than Ghostbusters.
- Elf  2003    6.5/10  popular Christmas movie I hadn't seen it till this year.
- Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told  1967  6/10  Um...it was bizarre, and entertaining I guess. (my brother picked out this one)  would qualify as horror comedy, but I'm listing it with the non-horror ones because I watched it with my family (Is that even a reason? whatever) and it's not scary at all.

I remember when I first saw Vassal previewed, I thought it would be overpowered. I was wrong. it's fine.

Zookeeper
$5 - Action - Duration
+1 Action.
Gain a Horse.
The next time you play a Way or a card with an animal in its name (Horse, Goat, etc...), choose one: +$2, +2 Cards, +2 Actions, or +2 Buys.
-
When you gain this, gain a Horse.
When you play it's a sort-of-cantrip. Its main benefit is the duration next time effect.

FAQ: This cards' "next time" effect is triggered by Camel Train, Destrier, Royal Seal and Werewolf among others, but not Pooka (that's a fairy, not an animal), Caravan, Livery or Stables (has to do with horses, but no animal in the card name). Werewolf only counts because the word "wolf" is in it. Humans and animal-like monsters do not count otherwise.

Do Laboratory, Bureaucrat, Conspirator and Pirate count?
Yes according to the rule I've been using. So maybe I should change that rule. hmmm... Maybe I should say it doesn't work when it's part of another word, which means Werewolf wouldn't count anymore. Or better, that the word has to have something to do with the animal in it. Then Werewolf can still count, but not those words (or Royal Seal).

EDIT: I changed the FAQ. Those cards no longer count.

32
Werewolf only counts because the word "wolf" is in it.

Do Fisherman and Falconer count because they have "fish" and "falcon"?
Yes.

If the animal in the name is part of another word (like in LabRATory, PiRATe, or Royal Seal) that is unrelated to the animal, it doesn't count. Werewolf and Fisherman only count because the words "wolf" and "fish" are in them (and they're not unrelated to the animals in them). Humans and animal-like monsters do not count otherwise.

*EDIT: Changed the FAQ to make it not count words like Laboratory. Unfortunately, Royal Seal no longer counts, but since Royal Seal was removed in the 2e, I figured it's not worth keeping the pun.

Thx all of you...

Then the question is not at all "Dark ages or Nocturne ?", but "Adventures or Renaissance ?"...

Or both ? How would you compare them to Allies ?

Ohhhh, so many options....
I was going to recommend Menagerie.

Sorry for the late reply; time to close this contest without the usual 24h warning! The activity seemed promising at first, but then it fell off completely after december the 20th, resulting into 4 submissions to judge. I really got a feeling this contest isn't very popular anymore.

It's probably the time of year. I was thinking about entering something here. I just didn't get around to it because I was busy with hanging out with the family and Christmas stuff.

Trope
At the start of your turn, you may discard a card to take a card from your discard pile costing no more than the discarded card, and put it in your hand. You may not use Switch on the first two turns of the game.

FAQ: You may only use switch's ability once per turn.

I think you'll have to wait for the secret history for that kind of thing...

Does this mean entries are closed?

If not, here's mine:

Portioning
$5 - Obstacle
Until you buy this, after you gain your first card each turn, all cards except Treasures cost $1 more until the end of the turn.
(This cost increase happens before any effects that reduce costs.)

something simple

Quote
Needle Peddler
$5 - Action
+1 Card
+1 Action
+$1
Reveal the top card of your deck. If it's a Needle or a Province, put it in your hand.
-
Setup: Add an unused kingdom card to the supply to be the Needle cards.

43
I'm assuming looters aren't the spirit of this contest, even though they add a pile to the kingdom?
Looters add a pile to the supply, but not to the kingdom. Ruins are not a kingdom card.

I like weird stuff, like cards that play other cards, and cards that don't do the same thing every time you play them. So, a Band of Misfits variant:
(I think I submitted an older version of this card to a previous contest some time ago.)

Quote
Doppleganger
$4 - Action - Command
Turn your Journey token over. If it's face-up, play any Action card in the supply, leaving it there. Otherwise, play the True Form card, leaving it there. If the card you played cost $5 or more, take <1> debt.
-
Add an unused non-Command Action card costing $3 or $4 to the game to be the True Form card.

FAQ: The True Form card is not in the supply.
Another version of this card allowed the True Form card to cost anything $3 and up, so if the True form card cost $5 or more, you'd take debt when the journey token was face down. I never actually tested it with a $5 True card, but it seems like it might be too strong even with the debt if it was a strong $5.
You sure that you want this to be able to play Command cards?
No. fixed.

45
You mean the Inherited trait, not Inheritance.

I like the idea, but I'd suggest making it a cantrip instead of +2 Cards. That makes its effect more similar to the original version, but still a significant buff.

Road Builder on top of Trade Route 5/5 split pile
First, a card with two reactions:
Quote
Road Builder
$4 - Action - Reaction
Discard up to 2 cards for +$2 per card discarded.
-
When a card gives you +Buy, you may play this from your hand.
When you discard this besides during clean-up, you may reveal it for +1 Card and +1 Buy.
EDIT: added 'besides during clean-up'

Quote
Trade Route
$6 - Action - Duration
Now and at the start of next turn: +1 Card and +1 Buy, then discard a card and for the rest of the turn, cards that share a type with the discarded card cost $2 less.
(I don't mind having a card share a name with a removed card.)
FAQ: If a card shares more than one type with the discarded card, it is still only discounted by $2.

Cursed Heirloom
$4 - Action-Duration
Now and at the start of your next turn: Choose one: +$1, or Play an Action card from your hand twice and take 2 hex tokens.
-
When you discard this from play, if the Curse pile isn't empty and you have 4 or more hex tokens, return one and gain a Curse.
Hex token rules:
Hex tokens are -1 VP at the end of the game. Whenever you would trash a card costing $2 or less, you may instead discard it to lose a hex token.  (Originally, they were the same as Violet CLM's Mutineers, but they seemed to easy to get rid of. So I changed them to make them a little harder to get rid of.)
