Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Really bad card ideas
« on: November 22, 2013, 01:28:42 pm »
@ Sudgy.
Oh yeah, I did think it was really bad idea for a card.
But that's just my opinion.
I probably should have specified that I considered it to be bad.

Dominion General Discussion / Remembering Your First Game of Dominion
« on: November 20, 2013, 07:47:38 pm »
I remember my first game of Dominion. It was in a study room in the library of my school.
It was me, my older brother and his friend--who was introducing us to the game for the first time.
We did not play with the starting set, yet I still recall some of the cards on the table: throne room, witch, militia, laboratory.
The first kingdom card I bought was a witch--my brother's was a laboratory. I couldn't seem to understand why silver cost $3 when it only gave you $2, or why copper cost $0, it just seemed so strange. Why would you ever buy something that gave you less money than it cost? Eventually I realized that I was able to keep these cards even when I "spent" them. To tell the truth, I don't think my brother's friend was that great of a player--but he will always stand out as the person who introduced me to *the* game.
I can't remember who won that first game, but I do remember what it sparked in my mind.
The next week, while I was at work, I couldn't stop thinking about it. And, within the week, I purchased the Base set and began playing with my family.
Now, two and half years and 5 expansions later, I've come a long way from that first game. But the nice thing about Dominion is that every time is different--every kingdom offers a new insight into the marvelously complex interactions between the cards. Add more expansions, and it only gets better.
Anyway, just an amateur reminiscing about his first game.
Feeling the nostalgia yet?
Why don't you post something about your first game and where you are now.

The first action card I bought in my first game was a witch.
My favorite victory was when I beat my brother and his friend in an Alchemy game with Familiar.
Now, most of the people I play with veto curse-givers. I realize the importance (particularly for beginners) of learning how to build a good deck without having to worry about attacks--but there's nothing I like better than handing out the curses. ;D

I'm definitely going to be picking those up eventually. I just don't think I'm ready for them yet. In that past, I've jumped the gun on some complicated expansions, and I don't want to do it again.
There's a part of me that just wants to complete my collection all at once though.I mean, all 3 would only be what like $70 right?
I've never been too good at putting off purchases until later. . .
This Christmas, who knows ::)

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Furious
« on: November 17, 2013, 07:03:25 pm »
Yeah, if you run into a kingdom where there is no 5 cost card, you couldn't pick a silver and say a 4 coster--which would definitely suck. But yeah, those aren't too common.
So like you said, the 5/2 seems a little more extreme in whether it's good or not.
But 5/2 splits have a lesser chance of occurring than 4/3's right?

Well particularly if there's any good 5-coster out there. It seems only fair to let people decide their hand. Although in some kingdoms, I guess a 5/2 split could be a disadvantage. Anyway, I think the option at least is always nice.

Also, how does Goko decide who gets to go first? I've only played like 15 games or so, but I think I only went first once or twice. It didn't seem to make a difference if I had started the game or was joining one either.
That may not be a statistically large enough sample, but I just feel like it's a lot harder to get information about how a lot of things work on there.
Whereas, it seems like Isotropic had an extremely open interface with a lot of options and information.

Sometimes, I get the feeling that I really missed out by not playing on Isotropic.
It's a shame that they had to end it. It sounds like it had a superior system to Goko.
When I first started playing on Goko, it just struck me as having an interface that was too simple--like there should have been more options for things. Even just a game-type with time limits on turns would be nice.

KingZog3

Yeah. I currently play only with the base set on Goko, so mostly it's stuff like "what should I discard to militia" or something.
But I can totally see your point that with the more complicated cards from expansions, people would require more time.
I play most of my games in real life--but it's hard to always find people to play with, so then I play online.
I never got the chance to play on Isotropic, but did people try the same stuff on there?

In the little I've played on Goko, I wasn't aware that this had a name. But in several games where I was ahead, I noticed that my opponent would drag out their turn for at least a full minute or 2
Plus, yeah, I guess any time you play a card that requires them to make a decision, they wait on that too.
That really sucks. It seems like Goko should do something about it though.

From what you guys are saying. I don't think I'm ready for Dark Ages yet. Prosperity was a pretty big game-changer for me, and I don't think I've played it enough to handle Dark Ages.
Both Guilds and Cornucopia are smaller-size expansions, but I agree--cornucopia seems a lot less complicated to me.

I think I'll be going with Cornucopia then. Also, I think it's kind of nice to get the expansions in roughly the order they came out. I skipped Cornucopia in favor of Hinterlands, but it sounds like Cornucopia has a lot of really good cards that make things more interesting without being too much for a mid/lower-level player.

Dominion General Discussion / Which expansion should I get next?
« on: November 17, 2013, 05:21:11 pm »
I own every dominion expansion except cornucopia, dark ages, and guilds.
I'd say that I'm a fair player--but I can really only afford one expansion right now.
I don't know whether I'm sold on guilds yet, it seems like it adds some more advanced mechanics.
I know that dark ages is huge, but I'm kinda thinking of picking up cornucopia first.
Any thoughts about which one you think I should get would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I got the feeling you were kinda joking around. Once I think I get a better understanding of how they work, I'd be happy to jump in and try one though. Just sometimes with school it isn't always possible.
Definitely on my list though ;)

@Awaclus Thanks!

@AHoppy. Same here. Thanks for the advice! I still don't think I entirely understand how they work--but I'm reading the wiki and stuff. It looks like they last for a while though. Maybe during winter break. . .

Anyway, thanks all for welcoming me to the community.

This looks fun! But kinda complicated.
Come to think of it, I've seen a number of references to "mafia" but I never understood what it was.
Thanks for the info.

Hey everyone. I've been playing Dominion for about 2 years. Own every set except cornucopia, dark ages, and guilds--but I want them all! College student, business major with a concentration in information systems.

I prefer playing dominion in real life--although I do play on Goko occasionally--it's nice not having to shuffle ;).
Familiar is one of my favorite cards--but I also really enjoy games without attack cards, as there are less things for me to worry about.
I feel pretty solid in my understanding of the base set by itself--but I acquired the rest of my collection relatively quickly, and haven't had a lot of experience with Prosperity, Alchemy or Hinterlands.
I've read a number of threads on this forum--and finally got around to making an account.
So guess I'm just looking forward to learning some better strategies and having fun.
