As it concerns counters to Cultist and Mountebank, I think Trader is one of the best (along with Lighthouse, Watchtower, and Moat).  Am I mistaken?

The beauty of Trader is that it can be used either to block the incoming junk, or to remove it from your deck later.

If Cultist is present, I almost always go for it, but yesterday, because of Trader, I made an exception, and did not end up regretting it.  For those of you who like reading logs, be my guest:  http://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160403/log.0.1459726085063.txt

Marvel's Agents Of SHIELD, season 1 episode 22.

During the post-credits-type scene (it's actually before the credits, but after the SHIELD logo but, whatever...), just after Phil gets out of bed, there's a shot where the camera pans, left to right, across a storeroom.  At the very bottom of the screen, out of focus, a Dominion box briefly appears.  It's time stamp 39:37 if you have the DVD.

Don't know how I spotted that...

Maybe your friend needs to get an account and hang out in the variants forum! I am not so much looking for questions along the lines of "how about this card idea?"

Excellent advice!  Thank you, have a great day!

Thanks for the reply Donald!  I don't know whether most game designers are as involved in the ongoing support forbtheir games as you are, but I kind of assume not, and the fact that you are is just fantastic.

I can see that on-play costs for actions is something you've certainly explored, and I agree that discarding cards is the most elegant form, but do you think there's scope for other forms of it?  An action that gains a curse wjen played?  Or requires you to take your -1 card or -1$ token?  Use of the negative $ production phenomenon currently only seen on Poor House?

Still asking for a friend.  My attitude towards custom Dominion sets is like my attitude towards peculiar homemade pornography.  Whatever you do in your own home is your own business, but don't go around posting it in the internet because people are only going to start looking at you funny and wondering what's wrong with you.

It provides compensation against Junkers/trashers, which I actually like, but I don't think it's great against discard attacks. It draws you a card, which lets you discard from a hand of 6 cards instead of 5 cards.
You quoted me? But...why?

Sorry, accidentally posted before the post was complete! Darn IPad control interface...

Unless I'm misreading the card, I think that you might be.

I believe, as a reaction to an attack, it gets played (down into the 'durations' section if your play area), thus allowing you to draw a card.  So, if the attack is a discard attack you still only have 5 cards to discard down from, but you do get a bonus one money on your next turn when its duration portion kicks in.

Is this its value?  That if you have multiples in hand it can help your next turn income substantially?  I still agree with the consensus that it's a pretty weak card.  Maybe it's designed as a direct counter to Relic?

As with previous poster, apolgies if this has been addressed before. I don't think it has, because I don't know the answer.

Is there any reason why the mechanic of paying money mid-turn has been used so sparingly? (only on Black Market and Storyteller)

I'm asking for a friend.  He is into designing custom cards, and insists there is "considerable design space there".  I'm less optimistic, but can't articulate why to him, other than that I personally don't care for it.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Artificer
« on: January 07, 2016, 06:00:31 am »
I've only played with it a few times but it seems strong.  As others have said, worst case, it's a 5-cost peddlar and, well, sometimes you want that.

Best case I can think of would be comboing up a few Artificers with a few Scrying Pools and a very action-rich deck.  Use a SP to fill up your hand, play Artificer, discard 8 cards for a Province, play another SP, rinse, repeat, to gain multiple Provinces in a turn without the need for +buy or cost reduction.  Sure, the Province gets topdecked, but the next SP discards it for you.

61

Holy fuck did you seriously just write all that? There's no way I am reading all of that.

I wish I'd said that to David Annandale.

62

I guess I am lucky, because I grew up in a good neighborhood in a good country and the worst social experience I've had  next to this one is in high school when the jocks decided to give me wedgies that suspended me in the air by my boxers until my underwear ripped in half (an isolated incident that I did not have to endure routinely)

OP has a history of getting butthurt.  Couldn't have guessed.

63
Honestly in all of my social experiences in life this forum is by far the worst experience.

OK, that may be literally the stupidest thing I've ever read.  And I read The Damnation Of Pythos by David Annandale.

Unless you are four years old, or have spent your life living in a box, this is not your life's worst social experience.  You have posted on a forum, and then immediately got over-defensive against the people you have perceived as criticising or belittling you when, and here's the rub, as far as I can tell no one was.

If the attitude you have brought to your discourse here is anything like that which you bring to other dealings in your life... no.  No way have you never been treated worse than this.

A tip for you for forums, or the internet in general, from a guy who's been around since the usenet newsgroup days and has avoided posting for a decade and a half because of, well, frankly, people who act like you do, which you can take or leave as you wish.  You see a response you don't like; don't respond.  You're not obliged to, and you'll probably have a happier life if you don't.

On the other hand you seem compelled to do so, even when your response is just to point out that you don't find a joke funny, which if you don't, ask yourself, what the hell is pointing this out going to achieve?

In fact one of the few posts directed straight at you which you have decided not to reply to was when I posted earlier calling you out for being a right rotter to me last month.  No denial, no apology, which is fine by me - I just wasn't going to let you get away with playing the matyr hypocritically - but it strikes me as odd considering everything you have replied to.

My conclusion?  Well, I sincerely hope that you are what the kids these days are calling a troll, and you've come here ti amuse yourself by getting into a few arguments and causing a few squabbles between existing forum members.  Because, goddamnit man, if your interactions here in the last 48 hours have been enough to really make you as upset as you are claiming to be, then you are in for a pretty shitty life.  It gets worse after high school you know.

I will now return to my previously scheduled lurking.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why are engines fun?
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:28:42 pm »
I think engines are okay, but they tend to make turns longer. Which matters a lot more in multiplayer games (it's not exactly rare i play with 3+ other people). I enjoy the relatively short turns on non-engine boards, allthough i know playing a successful engine is fun. It just doesn't make up for the time it takes, especially if other players do it.

Personally, I'm far more likely to play an engine on a given board if I'm playing online than if I'm playing IRL.

Sometimes, with the physical cards in front of me, I have to balance my desire to win by relentlessly persuing Scrying Pool or Hunting Party or something, with my desire to still have the will to live twenty minutes later.

That's one of the great things about Online play, I'd say.  Engines are still long winded, but no shuffling required, and cards like the above (And Storeroom!  Oh god, Storeroom!) are actually more feasible to play.

65
I'm certainly going to be a little more happy about my use of the report button, that's for sure, as actually trying to engage in actual discourse with them and be nice about it has led people to point fingers at me saying "LOL UR OFF TOPIC TOO!!!" Hilarious. I'm super-amused.

I learned a while ago to always try to be kind, because you never know how awful someone else might be feeling, and you might be the only person who shows them kindness that day.  :)

At the risk of being 'that guy', I played two games with you just before Christmas and after both you told me my wins were 'bad' and I didn't deserve them.

Under other circumstances, if my wins were very high-variance luck-based strategies, I wouldn't necessarily have minded, but you seemed very unreasonable.  The first game I beat you with an early pile-out facilitated by Highways and +buy.  The second, you were going for a Madman megaturn into Duchies/Dukes, but it didn't work against whatever it was I was doing.

The first one was particularly galling because I am a dreadful dominion player, so on the rare occasions when I pull off something like that I do feel a sense of pride.

Now, I don't normally remember the details of games I played a month ago, but this occurence stuck in my head.  Kinda ruined my day dude.  I'm sorry you had a bad time yesterday, but I would humbly suggest that you practice what you preach.  Fo' sheezy.

The architecture was designed with a focus on online play, not offline or pass-n-play. Personally, I'd love offline play. It may happen at some point. But it doesn't make sense right now for the business. [...] So, offline won't happen any time soon. You know what? It is OK to play Ascension when you don't have internet, ...

It's not OK to play Ascension when you don't have internet.  Ascension sucks.

I've never played Ascension, but this is the only proper response of a true Dominion believer. That MF guy is sprouting blasphemic nonsense and should, according to custom, be burned on the stakes.

Ascension suffers from a common problem with deck-builders, and one which Donald X has stated multiple times he purposely avoided.  Namely, the mechanic is based around a pool of available cards, which are replaced with new cards from the top of a face-down deck when they are bought.  I have rarely known this not to lead to major suck.  (Shadowrun Crossfire gets away with this, because cooperative).

The game has other flaws, and a few charms too, but overall, does not compare to Dominion.  Not even close.

I don't know why I care though.  I usually have internet so offline play is not a priority for me.  That's what books are for.  I guess it just offends me every time I hear someone say Ascension is as good as/better than Dominion.  Yeah, that's definitely it.

Thank you cactus, for expressing all my feelings these past few days without me having to!

I am also several weeks into the "Don't worry, the app will be out soon" chasm left for iPad users.  Wait, no, make that several years, if truth be told...

I agree, having to pay again for iOS use would 'suck' especially since we could play fine(ish) via the website until a few weeks ago, but right now it would be preferable to the situation we're currently in; that of being unable to play at all.

I mean, my wife is going away this weekend.  What am I supposed to do?  Meth?
