Just got my copy from a coworker from Portland, OR, who bought it at his FLGS before flying to Germany. Is this the first copy in Europe?  ;D

I can report no copies yet sighted in the UK, so probably. :(

Why can't I have a friend who regularly travels to the US on business?  Or, you know, any friend?

I will try very hard not to use this as an excuse to vote to leave the EU.

Still no X or Z cards... *sigh*

I felt sure we would get a Ziggurat in Empires. :(

In my head, I abbreviate Crossroads to X-roads.  It helps the pain a little.  But only a little.

I ordered from Nomad Camp co. and saw my Empires cards remarkably quickly. I would recommend!

That's because it went straight to the top of your deck.

Yes, that's the joke.

*furiously searches the internet for an online board game store called 'Nomad Camp' to prove LFN wrong*

*slinks off back to his hole in shame*

This sounds interesting, I haven't played with "real" cards for years.
I'm near Gloucester, so could make it on Saturday or Sunday.

It would be an honour sir.  I'll keep you in the loop.

Also, of course I don't live in Slough. I live somewhere immeasurably worse  :P

Basingstoke.  Got it.

If this is gonna be a proper thing, maybe I'd be tempted to see if I can find time, too.  Count me in!

Hey, I guess it's a proper thing if we say it is.

So what I plan to do is:

1) Obtain a copy of Empires.  From the news this morning, it sounds like that's been pushed back a little.  Nay bother.
2) PM you guys (ced, Joseph, Haddock) to try and find a mutually acceptable date.
3) Once agreed, advertise the date on f.ds to see if there are any further interested parties.
4) Confirm the exact venue a few days ahead of time.  It will be Reading, but options such as my place, my mate's place, our FLGS and one of my Uni holdings would be options dependent on numbers.
5) Mercilessly crush you all with a host of new cards.  :)

I'm also pretty close to Reading and Oxford and would be up for some Empires.

Well ced, Joseph, you are both very welcome to join me and my pal in Reading when Empires comes out for a big ol' session. Heck, because of my... links... to the University, I could host a much greater number of people if needed, so the more the merrier.

The only problem is the lack of a firm UK release date.  If we knew that, we could plan something now.  My FLGS has it on pre-order for me, but the first I'll hear is probably a phone call when it arrives.

Also, ced, saying you're pretty close to Reading and Oxford and not elaborating will lead people to believe you live in Slough.  You have been warned. :)

Anyone who can make it to Reading, UK, I'll play ya.  Not sure I've ever hit my dominion limit.
You're in Reading?  INTERESTING.  I'm in Oxford, several friends in Reading.

Sure am!  Oxford, eh?  I used to run a homeless hostel in Oxford, and you do have the luxury of the only board game cafe I've ever heard of.  Nice city.

I tend not to leave Reading if I can avoid it.  If you come here, I can find us a venue probably, for a game or six.  I might even travel to Oxford; the trains are pretty decent.

You struggle for IRL opponents in Oxford?  I've basically got only one friend who'll play me here.  All the others either don't care for the game or feel I've gotten too good at it :(

4p base games
Would you go even if it was happening?
Potentially, if only because it would give me a good chance of being the UK dominion Champion, which would be cool.

You'd have to beat me, buddy ;)

Windfall seems weak. If you're drawing your deck, you usually don't want Golds. But I could be wrong there.

I think you're wrong there... quite often you'll build up a great engine that can draw your deck and generate multiple buys; but still only end up with $15 or so money to spend. I remember many games where I've bought a Province and a Silver, then later a Province and a Gold, then finally could move on to 2 Provinces. This gives you a whole new way to build up an engine and then quickly add payload.

Also you can just trash all your money to replace it with 3 golds. Except you need 5 money.

Foraging down quickly to just Foragers and Coppers will get you to where it sounds like you want to be.

You never want to click "play all tresures" when there's Save on the board

Ditto for if you want to buy something you've got your trashing token on and trash out a spare copper!

Goko Dominion Online / What I've learnt from Adventures online...
« on: May 03, 2016, 07:50:07 am »
Just played my first Haunted Woods game. Boy, weird card. There's a lot of things I'm learning about Adventures by having the interface make me do things -- like even if I have more than one buy, after the very first buy I have to put my whole hand on top of my deck. Matters for things like Farmland -- very interesting!

Inspired by the post by the above user, I thought it might be helpful to have a thread devoted to all the interesting interactions and occurances players are discovering now there is an online implementation of Adventures, and we're not reliant on our own, fallible, interpretation of the rules IRL.

For my part, I discovered yesterday that if Page/Peasant is in the Black Market, then the relevant upgrade cards will appear in the kingdom, as per the setup rules, but there will be no way to access them because there is no pile to return the Page/Peasant to to exchange.  How odd!

Oh, well if the App Store Dominion update is holding everything back to ensure a total simultaneous release on all platforms, I guess that makes sense.

Oh man.  On behalf of my fellow iPad users, I would like to apologise for ruining everyone else's fun. :(

Seriously, if that IS what's holding it up, we could be here a long time.  The App store is notoriously leaden-footed.

Congratulations on getting the contract for the 2017 implementation fellas!

If the new Dominion Online will run on my iPad, either through a browser or an app, you can basically have as much money as you want from me.

If it won't, then I'm afraid you can only have my sweet, sweet tears.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: House rules you use
« on: April 18, 2016, 05:25:31 am »
With Tournament you have to discard the province instead of just revealing it. We play mostly 4p games and the players that get to province first are already in a better spot and having to just reveal the province usually means that the last player to get a province has no chance to get back in the game.
I think this originated from a translation error on our version and we stuck to it, because all players liked this alot more.

Sounds to me like you're playing the rules as written.  You're supposed to discard the Province when you play Tournament, but you don't have to discard it if you are revealing it on another player's turn in order to 'block' them.

However there is nothing to stop you re-drawing the Province and using it again later the same turn. :)

Off-topic, I think a four-player Tournament game sounds like bad times for someone no matter what...

The Dominion iPad app was released on my birthday, an occurence which ended for me an eight week spell without any dominion access.

For this reason, in spite of my generally rational and pragmatic attitude toward life, the fact that two of you guys have birthdays imminently fills me with a great deal of hope for the coming weekend.

Which is excellent, because my wife is going away over Saturday night and, as is a matter of record, I don't want to smoke crystal meth.

Well, I assume we're talking about the best village compared to its price because otherwise we're talking Border Village or Lost City I think, without much question.

For its price though, I'd say Fishing Village.  C'mon guys, when was the last time you passed up one of these for 3 coins?  I pick this sometimes over silver just for the payload, but its ability to guarantee you multiple actions on your next turn is what really makes it shine.

My favourite village is probably Nobles.  Both parts of an engine in one card?  And some VP?  Yes please.

The village I overbuy too much is Shanty Town.  The phrase, "Shanty Town, Shanty Town, Shanty Town.  I have three coins.  I buy a Shanty Town," should be etched on my tombstone.

A good case has been made here for Wandering Minstrel, and I certainly agree that it's powerful.  I think it would still see a lot of action at 5.

Plaza is a real sleeper card too.  There's so many nice tricks you can pull off, like Plaza-Library and Plaza-Menagerie.  It's a great buy, and its power is not necessarily obvious at face value.

The problem with Trader is that you (may) still end up with the junk, it just happens later, on a turn when you don't have the Trader in hand. Good, yes, but Watchtower is so much better.

True, but with Trader you get a Silver out of the deal, which is probably a card you want in this junking-heavy scenario we're talking about.  Also, if you do get junk in your deck, Watchtower can't do anything about it, whereas Trader can, albeit badly.

You're probably right - Watchtower is likely better in this scenario, but Trader is still very useful, and I think it's an oft overlooked card.

That was pretty close, and trader+market square is really what worked, not just trader, I'd say?

Well spotted!  I admit, I didn't reread the log before posting it - I just remembered I'd played the game and that it might be relevant to the discussion.  It was a close but immensely satisfying game, with all the Trader and MS shenanigans.

I think there's a very real possibility that Cultist is far more skippable than people think ;)
