Puzzles and Challenges / Re: What Card Am I?
« on: January 27, 2015, 12:21:32 pm »
(1) At the start of your turn, you have 2 of me and 3 coppers.  You play the first one of me.  You play the second one of me, which you knew would be a useless play, other than that it highly annoys your opponent.  You enter your buy phase with $3, 1 buy, and an irritated opponent.  What am I?

(2) I am in your hand, but I am neither a Treasure, nor Action, nor Victory, nor Curse card.  What am I?  (There's only 1 of these that i can think of, but there may be more.)

(3) I can make playing 1 copper once give you $2 instead of just $1, but I am not Coppersmith (nor am I Counterfeit, because you only play the copper once).  What am I?

(As always, I've done my best to have 1 and only 1 answer for each card, but there is almost always more valid answers that I hadn't thought of.)

(1). scrying pool, where the only other cards in deck are KC and possession? EDIT: and you put the card back on their deck with 1st SP.
(2). Hovel
(3). Bank

Correct for (2) and (3)!

Game Reports / Re: How to beat Stef in 8 turns...
« on: January 26, 2015, 08:31:03 am »
Answer, perfect shuffle luck and swindler hits

Anyone can beat anyone with these 2 things.  Especially gotta love it when this happens:
Stef - plays Swindler
Svenisntb - reveals Overgrown Estate

Well played though.  I wonder if opening Swindler/Ironworks is better than Swindler/Remake here though.  Other than that, pretty flawless on both sides, just difference in luck.

well sometimes bishop fortress is the optimal play. i had that once where me and my oponent had a golden deck that trashed 5 or 4 fortresses a turn and at the end of his turn each player was leading in points. It would have never ended if he wasnt deciding to try to win another way (remodeling to provinces) but that was not the correct move as i continued trashin for points and won.

I know no log = didn't happen, but I had something very similar to this happen to me once.  The game got to a point where I had 5 Fortresses and 4 Bishops, while opponent had 5 Fortresses and 5 Bishops (I can't remember if we had anything else, maybe a couple other villages or something, not sure).  I was several points ahead, but knew I was donezo (unless he drew all 5 Bishops in his hand a couple times, or something), so I went Remodel to turn Fortresses into Duchies for the 3 pile, but it was too late.
...buy the last bishop? Or was it in the trash?

Yes I had trashed it somewhere along the way for some reason.

Game Reports / Re: Obvious Baron?
« on: January 21, 2015, 03:54:52 pm »
Personally, I love Smugglers here because the more the merrier with these non-terminals (Smugglers would be like a Workshop).  I would probably open that and Fortress, because Fortress is the only village.  I realize this is a slow start compared to something like Baron+Oasis, but I don't really see a huge advantage to getting a gold early, compared to most games.  Then again, you want Ghost Ship asap because there's no real counter to it other than already having a lot of Advisors or something.  Smugglers can always give you either of these things, if you're lucky.

You don't really want Gold here. You want to get as much VP as possible and 3-pile with Baron's +buy. Gold is okay if you want Provinces, but if you're playing a Monument or two a turn, and your opponent is going for straight Provinces, he has to deal with two different things:

1. He has to take a lot longer to build a competent engine/BM deck for Provinces. You only have to play Monument and keep buying pieces to build. He can hurt you with Ghost Ship, but you can do the same to him. Every single turn.

2. He has to gain all 8 Provinces. You don't. He's going to draw things dead as he gets Provinces, and you're not going to. All you have to do is run piles and Monument away. With this board being kinda weak for a traditional Engine (Trader being the only trashing), this is going to be incredibly hard to do, and you almost certainly want to go with a Ghost Ship BM or Advisor/Vault if you don't go Monument. There really is no reason to NOT incorporate a Monument into Ghost Ship BM or Advisor/Vault anyways. (I'll admit, it'll take longer to incorporate Monument into Vault/Advisor)

There's no real reason to get Gold here. Avoid it if you can.

I do like Smugglers here, but it's just another Terminal. Eh. You're not drawing your entire deck, so you don't know what you could get whenever you draw it, so it's a bit swingy.

Also no reason to open with a Village. What is that Village doing to help you in the early game? It's a cantrip with no benefit except +action, which does nothing in the early game. You can pick those up later. Silver and Baron/Monument seems fine to me.

I still like that Advisor/Vault synergy, and man, Baron is going to be huge for that.

Whoever said your opponent is going to go for Provinces?  I would never go green here, with Spy, GS, and Monument.  Too much junk top deckers to want green, except in the endgame.

Assuming you're both going for the same thing -- Monuments + some kind of engine -- then that's exactly why I like Smugglers.  It would help you to win the Advisor, Fortress, Spy, and Oasis splits (in theory), all of which help towards playing more Monuments and playing GS every turn.  And you don't even need a +buy -- Smugglers is your +buy.  I would then go green once I had enough Advisors to cycle through pretty much everything.

You make a good point about the Fortress being useless at the beginning though.  But I definitely eventually want as many of those as possible.

But honestly, I really don't know.  This is just my thought process, which is right slightly greater than 50% of the time.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Gaining Coppers with IGG
« on: January 19, 2015, 04:13:35 pm »
This question is a bit confusing.  If I can only gain coppers via IGGs and nothing else, I can gain from 0 to n coppers when I play n IGGs.  If I can play other cards (with IGGs in play), then can't I pretty much just gain however many coppers I want, i.e. just go crazy with KC + more buys + Hagglers, etc.?

Somehow, you are in your buy-phase with 1000 coins to spend, 100 buys, are losing by 1 VP, and there are plenty of green cards left.  You have played a bunch of Counterfeits and Contrabands, to the point where you can't actually buy anything.  You don't have any Horn Of Plenty's.  How can you win the game on this turn?  You have not played Outpost.  No shenanigans (Possession, etc.).

(As always, I am thinking of 1 way to do this, but there are probably many.)

Play IGG, gain Copper (emptying the pile) to boost your Gardens or Fairgrounds above the treshold

EDIT:

Play Loan or Venture, discard Tunnels to gain Golds for the same purpose

Yes, those work!  But they were not what I had in mind.  What I had in mind does not involve playing any more (treasure) cards that you haven't already played yet at the time of the mentioned circumstances.

3 piles are already empty. You have a Scheme and a Hermit in play. Don't buy anything, gain a Madman, topdeck Hermit, this boosts your Vineyards over the threshold.

Nice!  I was thinking something similar, but slightly different:

You have some number of Hermits in play.  Don't buy anything, gain some Madmen.  Reveal Trader to gain Silvers instead of Madmen.  This empties the Silver pile, 3-piling the game, while bumping up your Feodums.

My deck+hand consists of the following, and nothing else:
A Duchies
B Dukes
C Gardens
D Silk Roads
E Estates
F Coppers

Assume (A+B+C+D+E+F) is a multiple of 10 and (A+B+C+D+E) is a multiple of 4 for easy Gardens/Silk Road math.
Gaining 1 of which card -- Duchy, Duke, Gardens, Silk Road, Estate, or Copper -- would give you the most +VP (assume there is at least 1 of that card left for you to gain)?
No shennanigans are in play (Possession, gaining 10 curses from Embargo tokens, etc.) -- just plain, old-fashioned card gaining.
Answer would be in terms of A, B, C, D, E, and F.

Bonus: come up with a similar puzzle that involves Vineyards, action cards, Feodums, silvers, etc.

Yes.

You gain the same Prize twice in a game. Your opponent never gains or in any way receives a Prize. How?
Could this be accomplished with Trader?  I.e. you gain a Prize, reveal Trader, gain silver instead, then gain the same Prize later.  I don't think this works though because you gain a silver *instead* of gaining a Prize -- so the first "gain" wasn't really a gain.

Follow-up question: What is the maximum number of cards one action card can draw you, other than with Crossroads, Madman, or Storeroom?
Forge by trashing all 10 Cultists for +30 cards?

You can get 50, by forging 10 cultists (3 cards each) and 20 rats (1 card each)
Ah, forgot about Rats.

What are all the action cards such that you can draw 7 or more cards by playing them once?  (I don't know the answer -- I'm asking.)  No shennanigans (Possession, Thrown Room, King's Court, etc.)
I can think of 9 off the top of my head: Crossroads, Madman, Storeroom, Cultist (if chaining multiple Cultists counts as 1 action), Chapel by trashing Cultists, Forge by trashing Cultists, Jack by drawing 5 then trashing a Cultist you just drew, Band of Misfits, Library.
Also, I thought of Secret Chamber when you have 5 of them in your hand and opponent plays attack.  You would draw 10 cards.  However, I would say this is not playing 1 action card -- it's reacting 5 action cards.

Follow-up question: What is the maximum number of cards one action card can draw you, other than with Crossroads, Madman, or Storeroom?
Forge by trashing all 10 Cultists for +30 cards?

Isn't it just Vault?
Ah, right.  I forgot about Vault and Secret Chamber.  Yeah I'm pretty sure those are it, unless someone can come up with something better.

Follow up question: What would it be if it were the only card in your hand at the time?  I.e. Vault would only give you up to 2 coins.  And what would X be?

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: What Card Am I?

I am an action card.  When you play me, you immediately get +$X, where X is as a direct result of playing this action card, not from gaining treasure cards via consequences of this action card.  For example, if you play a Swindler, X is 2.  Or if you play a Salvager to trash an Estate, X is 2 (assuming the Estate costs 2 at the time).  X must come from the action itself, not from getting treasure cards from a result of the action -- e.g. if you play a Smithy and pick up 3 silvers, X is not 6 - it would be 0.  Also, if you had 4 coppers and a Coppersmith, playing the Coppersmith doesn't immediately give you any coins, so X would also be 0 in that case.  You may or may not get other stuff besides the +$X (+buys, +cards, etc.) when you play me.  X is the greatest that it can be, for any action cards.  What am I?  Assume anything can be in your hand, the supply, the trash, etc.  Also to clarify, if say you Thrown Room a Swindler, X would be 0 for the Thrown Room and 2 for each of the Swindlers (I'm not sure how Goko would actually calculate this, but lets say it works this way for the sake of simplicity).  Also, as always, no shenanigans (Possesion, etc.).

Bonus: What is X?

Note: I don't know what the answer is.  I have a hunch as to what it is, but am curious to see what people come up with.
