This one is really OP.  But New Donate and Trail is off the chain.  Because under the new donate you trash all the cards at the start of your turn, so load up on trails and buy a bunch of engine parts, then trash all the trails for a pre-turn Lab a piece.  Just bonkers, especially on boards that lack +draw and actions. Then use one of the buys to buy donate at the end of your turn to rinse and repeat.

Wouldn't the draw happen during the middle of Donate, so you'd have an empty deck at that point?

Not sure if defensive combos count here, but Horse traders is a great counter to archer.  The reaction makes you have 4 cards in hand ergo it nullifies the Archer attack.  Also is helpful against the warrior, but really shines vs the annoying AF archer.

Isn't that just the entire point of the Horse Traders reaction? To defend against handsize attacks? Or is there something about Archer I'm missing?

Magnate seems to be a budget Marquis and a really pathetic one at that. I really wish that it also had a bit more going for on turns where it only gets drawn with 0,1 or 2 Treasures. It's a really bad when it is a lesser Smithy a lot of times.

The rest (from day 1 and 2) are cool though.
I disagree. Marquis decreases in power with continued play whereas Magnate increases.
It is really more like Hunter in terms of significantly pushing the optimal ratio of Actions to Treasures down.

I think that is cooler than mono-engine cards like Herald and Scrying Pool that want a high ratio.

I agree with your disagreement. We already have so many cool action cards, so it's nice to have more variety and incentive to keep extra treasures around (even in engines). Especially when it's a card from the "treasure" expansion!

The obvious Loan/Venture solution is to just combine the two cards. Their wording is already almost identical. Just switch it to "discard, trash or play it".

This fixes basically all the issues brought up about Loan. And it can make Venture useful even in a treasureless engine.

my first impression is that swap is a super controversial card

Isn't that more of an "allies first impressions" thread first impression though?

As pointed out in the rulebook, Highwayman can actually draw itself! Was this possible before?

Sycophant seems like in most kingdoms it would mostly be useful for the on-gain and on-trash effects. Having to discard 3 cards, without even any draw, seems a steep price for +$3

Indeed. Priced cheap to compensate. Nice synergy with discard strats and/or draw-to-X.
Sycophant + Plateau Shepards is crazy. They're just instantly worth 2 points, and your Estates are worth 3.

If the other person does something normal like buy Witches and curse you, you just win with those two piles.

Sycophant + Plateau Shepards. They Sycophants are just instantly worth points!

Played several games with Royal Galley last night against the bot (so it let me get all 10 of them). My impression is that it turns those semi-engines into a full fledged super-consistent engine. It really helps any sort of Village,Smithy,Workshop type of game.

Also, don't forget that Royal Galley is letting you pick a specific card to start next turn with. It's not just a free play from your initial 5-card hand. Starting your turn with a free Smithy or two is great! In that respect, it's more similar to a one-time Prince that also works on $5+ cards.

Royal Galley has tricked you all by reminding you of Throne Room.  Instead it reminds me of Caravan or Ghost Town.  This turn, it draws a card and lets you play an action, effectively +1 card +1 action.  Next turn, it's effectively +1 card +1 action again, but the extra card & action are spent on the same card you played the previous turn.

For the "next turn" assessment, isn't it more like playing a +2 cards +2 actions card (lost city)? Since you don't have to spend any cards/actions that turn to play the other card.

Anyway...back to split piles. Man, if you get 3 of these new split piles in one game, that's a ton of extra cards to keep in mind simultaneously! It's not necessarily a new problem (eg Travelers), but it seems like this takes it to a new level.

Ah, I see -- the NA thing was about whether to pronounce the h in herb.

I disagree about the "we all know basic English" thing though. :D I see things like "an historical ..." all the time from major news organizations, etc.

If the "H" word sounds like it starts with a vowel, use "an". If it sounds like a consonant, use "a".

An hour.
A hat.

Re: Voyage discussion.

I have to say, I was surprised how little you can do on a Voyage turn. I was expecting its power level to be more similar to "only play 3 action cards". But not being able to finish by playing all Treasures does kill most standard turns.

On the other hand, there are a ton of useful things you can do with just a single action play on an extra turn. A few that come to mind are to hand out a Curse (or any other attack that stacks), Trash a card, or play a gainer (especially one such as Sunken Treasure that works better when you haven't just played a huge engine turn). Sometimes these things could've just happened on the original turn, but if you can do them an extra time because of Voyage, that's a huge boost. You just have to weigh that against the cost of an otherwise dead card.

« on: March 02, 2022, 10:30:30 am »
Even ignoring the craziness of Elder, I really like the design space of these choose-one's. I'm thinking these cards are really going to help smooth out engine play -- especially in the early building stage.

As an example, take Town. Village is often completely useless if it's not drawn with other actions. Same thing for Woodcutter if it IS drawn with other terminals. Well, put them together, and it's almost always useful. And with Elder, it's... a Grand Market Village for $4?

42
Procession and Way of the Turtle is pretty awesome (WoT once on the processed action). It's basically: Play an action this turn and next turn. Gain an action costing 1 more than it.

Kinda like a gaining super-Captain effect.

How much are you involved with the Temple Gates version of Dominion? Answering rules questions? Testing? UI design or input?

I'm so excited for a good offline vs AI Dominion client that I can buy without a subscription! I just want to be able to sit down and play some non-competitive Dominion with the ability to turn it off or pause at any time (little kids create lots of interruptions).

Wasn't there some news late last year about a new company developing an app or other offline Dominion version? Sorry, I don't remember many details. Anyway, is that still happening? Is there somewhere I can check for updates on that?

Add some more restrictions that eliminate infinite loops and infinite points, and then you have a better challenge.
