The website version is what will go live on the 1st. Mobile versions are coming "sometime in 2017".

Turn 20 - JW
J plays 5 Golds.
J buys a Dominate.
J gains a Province.
J gets 9 VP.

You sure that's not a "2017 moment"?

What's your policy on commenting about the current state of the 2017 client? Are you going to post on the ShuffleIt forums at all? The "Features" forum, in particular, has a lot of requests to bring the client up to par with the MF features.
Right now I have 19 posts on the Shuffle iT forums.

I'm not sure what your first question is asking. If you mean, how much will I be commenting on it, probably not much; I don't want to be viewed as promising things or being able to provide things, on this project that isn't mine. And after having accomplished that, I don't want to be unfriendly towards them. I have a contract with RGG that lets RGG sub-license digital rights; they have a contract with Shuffle iT; Shuffle iT is making the program. Any involvement I have with the online version is just me being friendly or stupid or both, same as before.

If you mean, how much do I think you should be commenting on it, man that's between you and them. That stream thing was public, so surely they expect people to talk about it in public?

Oh, you're posting on secret boards that I don't have access to. :) I just checked your post list, and it's empty from my perspective.

I guess my first question is mostly along the lines of are you going to say things like "I don't like how this specific thing is implemented -- personally I'd prefer it to work like this." Obviously, they can implement it however they want, but you do have a lot of clout. Sounds like your answer is "probably not much" though.

Overall I think the new client looks promising, but it's still clearly inferior to the MF implementation. I know it'll get better -- I'm just hoping it happens fast enough not to turn away players.

Any sort of Throne Room variant really helps out Farmer's Market. It's such a slow card that benefits from multiple plays.

Uncontested it's a ton of money and points. Still not sure how good it is overall though.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Artificer
« on: December 12, 2016, 10:35:35 am »
I don't think Artificer qualifies as a "sifter". It's basically just a "discarder". That being said, all your points in that section still hold up.

One fun interaction is that if you have cost reduction x5 and 2 Artificers in hand, you can insta-pile the Artificers plus 2 more $5 cost cards.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Second Edition Cards: Replace
« on: December 03, 2016, 06:55:24 pm »
I've played a couple of games with replace as the primary trashing card.

These games have revolved around replacing curses and copper with estates, eventually emptying curse, estates, and a third pile (sometimes duchy)

Is that fun? Doesn't really sound like it would be.

How mandatory did that strategy feel? Is it going to be like an IGG rush where it used to be mandatory but then people figured out how to deal with it?

Do you want all these "I'll test" messages here in this thread or somewhere else?

Anyway, I can help test (on a Mac). My uncle would be a great "inexperienced" tester. He really likes Dominion, but he's probably only played with 1/4 of the total cards.

Depending on the results of the voting, I think we need a slight reseeding. If these 4 make it:
Champion
City Quarter
Teacher
Disciple

They should be reseeded as:
Champion
Teacher
City Quarter
Disciple

Champion & Teacher are the endpoint of the travelers. CQ and Disciple are the two villages that can double your handsize. Those matchups make way more sense!

Disciple is not Madman :)

Errr...quite true. Copied and pasted from my list, and then I guess I just ran with the mistake. Doesn't matter anyway because Madman didn't win.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: empires: forum
« on: October 26, 2016, 10:02:13 am »
I really like the concept of Forum (but I haven't played with it yet). I'm a bit of a sucker for this type of card though. The two main cards this has been compared to are Warehouse and Cartographer. I'd argue that Forum combines the best aspects of these 2 cards while simultaneously eliminating most of their weaknesses.

Forum is vastly superior to Warehouse because it doesn't reduce your hand size. The dream of Warehouse is "Oh yeah, it lets me skip all my junk cards -- I'll get some of those!". Then you have a turn where you start by playing 3 Warehouses, and suddenly you are out of cards in your hand. Forum doesn't have that issue -- you can play as many as you want, and you'll end up with a starting hand of your deck's 5 best cards.

As a $5 cantrip sifter, Cartographer is the closest previous card to Forum. The big difference between the two is that while Cartographer sifts from your deck, Forum sifts from your entire hand + top 3 of your deck. This is a huge advantage for Forum. Even if you haven't drawn any cards yet, that gives Forum a search space of 7 cards to sift through compared to the 4 of Cartographer. If you've already drawn cards, the search space is even larger.

A common situation I've run into is a starting hand with one Cartographer as the only draw card. You play the Cartographer, and it draws something boring while revealing a couple cards that you really wanted this turn. Forum eliminates this issue because it draws everything before it sifts. Sure, you can't improve your next turn this way, but Forum is way better for your current turn.

Finally, we have the below-the-line "free buy" aspect of this card. This is another huge advantage of Forum over Cartographer. One of Cartographer's biggest faults is that it costs $5, and you just can't afford to get it over the alternatives. On the other hand, it's really common to overpay to get an important $5 card when you don't have a +Buy. I think it will be fairly common with $7-8 to skip a slightly better $5 card and pick up a Forum plus a cheap engine component. Even if you already have +Buy in your deck, you can't always line it up with your money while you're building. Basically when +Buy is limited, this card allows you to pick up extra components while building, and it gives you a huge boost in consistency during the end-game if you can afford Forum + Province a couple times.

As others have mentioned, Forum is sneakily good. It's definitely not going to challenge the top $5 cards, but it's basically always going to be a good card if you have any junk in your deck at all. It combines the strengths of Warehouse and Cartographer while eliminating their main weaknesses.

I was making a joke about Baker coin tokens. But not a joke -- that definitely needs to be a feature.

Easily prepaying for large amounts of time is a feature I consider valuable.  I will likely spend more if that is made convenient.

As long as there's easy paying for large amounts of coin tokens, I'll be happy.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Meta?
« on: October 18, 2016, 02:50:36 pm »
I think of the meta as generally being "the strategies that people use". Sure if there's one dominant strategy, everyone will just play that, and it wouldn't really make sense to use the word meta. But that doesn't apply to Dominion.

In Dominion you can see exactly what your opponent buys/plays, so there's less of a meta than there is in a game with hidden information like Starcraft (or Magic where you don't have the same cards as your opponent).

It's still important to have a general idea of what your opponent is probably aiming for in addition to what you can see from their actual buys.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: A game where Relic was actually good.

Tried various strategies against Lord Bottington with this board.

1. Gear-BM with Relic on $5 got me 4 Provinces in 13 turns before stalling. Had Bottington on points lockdown T20, before finally ending it T23, winning 60-19.
etc.

It's hard to evaluate Relic's strength like this because from your perspective, it plays out identically to a silver. You really need to have the opponent use a constant strategy and compare their performance when you do/don't use relic. AKA, a job for a simulator.

I just got a comparison of Spy vs Spy. I originally had a Spy vs Some Empires Card. I clicked that I didn't know the Empires card, and it replaced it with another Spy.

Saver is clearer than waiter.

Especially with the existence of an event called "Save" that helps to match up specific cards by saving them for later.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: A game where Relic was actually good.

Relic is definitely a great card to stick into most decks if you can fit in the buy. Even if it was a terminal silver action, I think it would be worth $5 (though clearly not as good as the actual version).

Really the attack can hit in two primary ways.
1. If the opponent doesn't draw cards on their turn, the attack is basically a non-cycling Minion attack (so slightly stronger than Minion attack?).
2. If the opponent does draw cards, it can really hurt their engine kicking off. Think of all the times that your Village drew your first Smithy for the turn. It can even muck up the middle of an engine turn. Say you play Village-Smithy from your starting hand, and you draw 3 Smithys instead of 3 and a Village. Basically if at any time the last card you drew was crucial for your engine, Relic would have killed that turn.

I think the common places to put cards with Secret Passage will be 1, 2, 6, bottom, somewhere else specific. Seems like those options would be the most useful.

So yeah, in the non-draw-your-deck scenario, "Name-A-Coppersmith" can often whiff or end up as just a silver. I was thinking more of the instances where you've trashed all your coppers & estates, and then won the Hunting Party split 6-4. Or won the Magpie/Peddler/etc split 7-3.

To simplify the examples/scenarios:
1. You are able to play most of your deck every turn -- including at least one card you can play 4+ of. "Name-A-Coppersmith" is anything from just a good payload to a megaturn enabler.
2. You aren't able to play most of your deck every turn. If you're lucky, you might line something up, but you should probably just skip this card.

Seems perfect -- a super powerful (best case) card that is often skippable depending on the board. But you're right...you've played with it, and I haven't. Maybe I'm just missing something.
