Puzzles and Challenges / Re: The exponential card

My vote's with rrenaud; exponential and quadratic cards were discussed in this previous thread.

Bank
Treasure - $7
When you play this, it's worth $1 per Treasure card you have in play (counting this).

Takes the right setup to be helpful. In a normal $5-card hand, it's not usually worth more than Gold, and sometimes worth less. In a large hand, it can be worth a ton, but that's usually only really useful if you have +buy to take advantage of it.

2807
Forge
Action - $7
Trash any number of cards from your hand. Gain a card with cost exactly equal to the total cost in coins of the trashed cards.

Relatively weak as a mass trasher because of its high price, and relatively weak as a Remodel variant because of its inflexibility. It can be very powerful, though, in games with large handsize so you can pick and choose what to trash to get the target value you need. Keep in mind ways to achieve your target value: if you want to Forge $8 for Provinces, it helps to plan in advance by having a lot of $4 cards, or a lot of $5s and $3s.

I feel like something similar might happen with Clerk:
 • You have 4 cards in hand, including two Clerks. Someone plays an attack.
 • Both Clerks are triggered.
 • You reveal one Clerk and trash a card.
 • Now you have less than 4 cards in hand, but you may still reveal the other Clerk, since it has already been triggered (and you merely chose to reveal the other one first).
...and anything you can do with two copies of a Reaction in hand you can do with one copy of a Reaction in hand.

I'm not sure this is right since reactions do not trigger automatically, but are chosen to be revealed (think about what happens when you have both secret chamber and moat.) If this is the case, you resolve each one sequentially, so only 1 card can be trashed.

Hmm, good point. (Which just raises further questions, I think.... Man, reactions are confusing.)

The most semantically correct and concise method I can think of acquiring your effect is invoking the infinite-reveal clause and abusing that. "When another player plays an Attack card and you have 4 or more cards in your hand, you may reveal this from your hand. If you do, trash a card from your hand."

I'm not quite sure this works. Consider the Mandarin / Royal Seal interaction:
 • You have Royal Seal in play; gain Mandarin.
 • Two effects are triggered: top-decking Mandarin, and top-decking Royal Seal.
 • You choose to top-deck Royal Seal first.
 • Now Royal Seal is no longer in play, but you may still top-deck Mandarin, since the effect was already triggered.

It seems to me that this argument ought to be valid. If it's not, I'm not sure why not, except that Reactions are confusing, man. (I still don't understand how the rules prevent you from revealing the same Tunnel multiple times on one discard.)

They do go into the discard.

During the clean up phase. Not straight away.

Indeed—i.e., at the same time as the treasure cards do.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: IGG/City?
« on: March 31, 2012, 12:26:58 am »
I think it might depend a lot on shuffle luck. If my opponent gets stuck at $4 for a few turns in a row so that I get ahead in the cursing race by a couple of IGGs, I might pick up a City or two on my next $5 hands to maybe put a different sort of pressure on my opponent. Does that sound like a viable tactic?

Out of curiosity, if you possess someone, and gain a card to the top of their deck, when you "gain instead" do you gain those cards to the top of your deck or just to your discard like a normal gain?

The second one.

Game Reports / Tournament / Silk Road
« on: March 25, 2012, 07:29:48 pm »
A game I decided to play in a very silly way, and eked out a win I didn't deserve by the turn-count tiebreaker:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/25/game-20120325-162441-b9cd8a00.html

It's not often you see Tournament on the board and decide to use it as a facilitator for Silk Roads. But, you know—Tournament can gain free Duchies; Followers gains free Estates; and Great Hall was on the board to boost the value of Silk Road as well. I don't pretend that my Tournament / Silk Road strategy was anything like optimal—and I probably should have lost—but man was it fun to try.

2817
Jimjam, I really like your first one. I hadn't thought of Possession shenanigans as a way to make the difference between "may" and "must", but you're totally right.

2818
Well, I'll start with a cheap entry that's maybe not quite in the spirit of it, but it's the best I can think of at the moment:

Zealot
Action — $5
+$3
For every card in play (including this) with "you may" in its text, discard a card.

Rules Questions / Possession un-trashing
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:56:43 pm »
So if a possessed player trashes cards, the trashed cards are returned to their discard pile... after they draw their next had at the end of the turn, is that right?

Ordinarily I think of trashing a possessed player's good cards (for no immediate benefit) as more or less a noob move brought about by not remembering that they won't stay trashed. (Make me Chapel my Platinum on a Possessed turn—what are you hoping to accomplish with that?) But it just occurred to me that this could in some cases be a devious way to make good cards miss the reshuffle: if I need to reshuffle in the cleanup phase of this Possession turn, the Platinum's still going to be set aside when that happens.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Simultaneity

I believe Masquerade is also the only card that can cause information about the contents of a player's deck to become unknown/untrackable. Though Native Village is an honorable mention in that category.

True! I was thinking of doing a trivia question on that as well. :)

DougZ actually tried something that at one point, I think. When he instituted lobbies, there was the Secret Chamber for meeting up with friends, and there were two other lobbies - one labeled as being for "competitive" play and the other as being for "casual" play. Nobody ended up ever using the "casual" one, so it was removed because it was always empty.

Actually, I think it was the "competitive" lobby that was eliminated- the current main lobby was the "casual" one.

Actually, they were both eliminated; when they existed they existed alongside the main lobby.

« on: March 12, 2012, 04:56:09 pm »
Well I don't know if I am actually understanding the challenge properly but my guess would be . . .

Masquerade. In that each player is passing a card simultaneously.

Correct! The simultaneity is explicily stipulated in the card text and FAQ, and if you tried to break it down and do the steps in order according to the ordinary rule you'd get the wrong result.

Possession

How?
You gain a card, and simultaneously, I gain that card. Obviously not what you're looking for though.

Naw, only one gain happens, same as Trader.

How? That's not what I was thinking of, but that card is confusing enough that it might have some simultaneous effect that I'm missing.
