Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Parody cards
« on: October 24, 2013, 05:37:18 am »
Stupid card idea - but it seems almost balanced!

The One Ring, $1
+1 Card
+1 Action
+1 Buy
+$1
+1VP
Discard a card.
Trash a Card
Gain a coin token
Gain a curse

Gain a curse.  If you do... [all the rest except]: this card has type curse and cannot trash curses.

maybe remove the +action.

Rather:

The One Ring, $1, Action - Curse
Gain a Curse. If you do:
+1 Card
+1 Action
+1 Buy
+$1
+1VP
Discard a card.
Trash a Card from your hand that is not a Curse.
Gain a coin token
---
When you would trash this besides with Mt. Doom, discard this.
Setup: Add Mt. Doom to the Kingdom.

Anybody else who read it as "Onion Ring"?

Something like this should definitely be added:

Mt. Doom: $12 - Victory
15VP
---
When you buy this you may trash any cards from in play or your hand. If you do not trash The One Ring, do not gain this.

Instructions
$1 Action
+1 Card
+1 Action
You may look at the Rules of Dominion.
+1! ^

Tactical Town Forum: $5
+1 Card
+1 Action
Read an article on the Dominion Strategy Forum.

My original reaction was that this card is was too powerful. Then I realised that it's power is greatly diminished as the games goes on, as implementing a new strategy halfway through a game is much less effective than at the start. Thus the best way to play this card is to try and grab it as early as possible, preferably around turn 3, so that you can decide which strategy to actually implement. This card is also a high skill card, since only one article can be read per card play. Reading the wrong article can be time consuming and pointless, and can have the negative effect of frustrating the other players. However the benefits can be incredible.

Edit: Strategy discussion added.

I recently uncovered a whole heap of appreciation for the card 'Procession' while playing a game the other day. Fortress and mystic were in the kingdom, so it was great. Procession the fortress and get free engine pieces and mystics -  awesome. It is very satisfying to pull off a successful use of procession, however it is all the more special because it doesn't work well in every situation.

Goko Dominion Online / Need help with Freezing!
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:01:52 am »
I have searched the forums and read up on freezing, but most info seems relatively 'oldish', and doesn't lead to resolving the freezing problem (or I am bad at searching).

It ruins games.

I am sure you don't need to be told this. This is the freezing where the screen just freezes in place, but you can click on the cards and menus. The chat is unresponsive, and no connection problem message comes up (meaning it is you with connection problems or whatever it is, not your opponent).  Is there any fix to this? It is by far the most painful thing about goko dominion for me at the moment.

I use:
  • Google Chrome
  • Macbook 15-inch late 2011 (Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB)
  • The Dominion Salvager mod
  • Not-the-best Internet

My internet runs much, much, more reliably on every other single program I use: chrome itself, youtube, steam, itunes, email, etc.

Any new information or help that I may have missed, or that you can inform me of would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Vassal & Aristocracy
« on: August 13, 2013, 09:23:42 am »
But it's also pretty easy to construct a deck containing only Vassal and $8 of money to trash and buy a Province every turn, which is much better than an engine that buys a Province every turn.
However it is quite hard to turn this into a golden deck, as you cannot trash your trasher, like you can with bishop. So you will often have an awkward 6 card deck of something like: gold, gold, silver, Vassal, Province, trasher. It can be done with other supporting cards, or with platinum, but again this reduces the chance for these combo-ing cards to line up in a kingdom. This would make a bishop golden deck a better strategy in many circumstances. I now agree that it is probably too cheep at $3, however another way needs to be thought up of how to balance with its self trashing ability.

Yeah I can see that Aristocracy is a beast as it is, one that may not be able to be affordably costed correctly as it stands. It just gains too many VP/coin tokens... So I gave it some thought and I think this fixes most of the problems brought up with this, and brings back the trashing from the supply which I think would be an interesting and fun game mechanic. Here it is:

Aristocracy: $6 - Action
Choose one: +1 action, +1VP, trash a kingdom card from the supply.
Or +2VP, trash a card from the supply.
- While this is in play, VP tokens may be used as coin tokens.

Replacing 'When this is in the kingdom' to 'While this is in play' unbreaks monument, and just turns it into a combo with this card, which is nice.

I am actually quite happy with this. Mid game you would grab one as early as you can, then use your VP-coins to grab as many more of these as you can before the pile runs out. Then end game you can combo these together, grabbing multiple VP points a turn (however it is more difficult to get ridiculous amounts of VP a turn). Once you are in the lead you can relatively quickly end the game by trashing provinces with the terminal version of this card. Build an effective engine around this, then you can even end the game with 3 or 4 provinces left. However not an automatic buy, because you have to weigh up whether gaining many of these in your deck is faster than the other strategies, as this takes time to set up.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Vassal & Aristocracy

I get what you are saying, and on I see the overpoweredness you are stating. Thanks for the feedback!

I don't think that netting 3VP is too much to ask for 3 action uses that may never happen, because during that time you could be using your woodcutter, or playing your silver with that spot that is taken up with Vassal. Considering the strength, I think we can pretty safely chop off the bonus cantrip ability when you successfully trash a VP card.

I think this card is comparable to Island. Island costs $4 which works out to be a little more than Vassal. It is always worth 2VP, no matter if it leaves your deck or not. This removes 2 cards from your deck when used, and Vassal removes one, and only green cards. Vassal will grab you two VP points if you connect it with Duchy or Province, and one for Estate, and will reduce the green of your deck. If you get many bad draws you can end up scoring no points from this card, whilst Island will always be worth 2VP. However it can be used effectively in many situations also.
The thing that seems to be the main problem is the 3VP for trashing another Vassal with Vassal. However there are a maximum of 8 cards in 2 player which is a maximum of 24VP points if one player trashes all their Vassals with Vassal. This is not an easy task on a large amount of boards, due to poor trashing. Then if both of the 2 players are going for Vassal and get 4 cards each, a maximum of 9 points can only be scored from them, 18 in total. It would probably be quicker to just buy a province and a duchy in big money and a board with no villages, for the same points. But in situations where an engine can be established, especially with Duchy gainers, this card can shine.
Less Vassals also means less chance of joining Vassals. Trashing Vassals for VP also reduces the potential for trashing other green cards in your deck, to score more points. Comparing this card to another $3 VP card, like tunnel is interesting too. I am not trying to prove that my card is terrible haha, just when you look at it this way, it doesn't look over-powerful... :)

Adding cost to this card is a double edged sword, as it gains more VP when trashed as its price goes up.
doubled overpay amount, read Asper's post and was enlightened.

Reworked:

Vassal: $3+ Action/Victory
0VP.
You may trash a VP card from your hand. If you do gain VP tokens
equal to the cost.
- You may overpay for this. +1VP for each $2 you overpay.

As for Aristocracy, after your input rethinking from your input, I do think this needs some reworking. I thought of this, but will give more thought later. Not sure if I am 100% happy with new:

Aristocracy: $7 - Action
Choose one: +1 action, +2VP, gain a copper.
Or +3VP, trash a card from your hand.
- When this is in the game, VP tokens may be used as coin tokens.

Shall edit the OP when I decide on changes.

Thanks for the link Asper, that looks interesting, shall check it out!

Edit: Deleted comment on overpay, added comment, Asper posted and changed overpay.

Variants and Fan Cards / Vassal & Aristocracy
« on: August 10, 2013, 11:01:46 am »
I have really liked the idea of making an expansion, and have quite a few tasty morsels bubbling away in my mind ready to be served as a hopefully delicious main course of Dominion experience. One of the flavours I have been experimenting with recently is the idea of card self synergy. So here is entree, just a taste of what is to come.

Vassal: $3+ Action/Victory
0VP.
You may trash a VP card from your hand. If you do gain VP tokens
equal to the cost.
- You may overpay for this. +1VP for each $2 you overpay.

Aristocracy: $6 - Action
Choose one: +1 action, +1VP, trash a kingdom card from the supply.
Or +2VP, trash a card from the supply.
- While this is in play, VP tokens may be used as coin tokens.

What do you think? All constructive feedback greatly appreciated!

Will edit this post as I am happy with card changes.

EDIT:
- Aristocracy re-balanced heavily

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Least Ignorable Card

What about Ambassador? I have always thought that was a pretty powerful card. A card that is most of the time, very unwise not to open with. Of course their are edge cases, but for the majority of the time, this seems true.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: NoMoreFun's Expansion WIP Thread

This is great! This expansion is really coming along with Dark Ages-esque strategic, interesting and awesome cards. Top job! Really like the new concepts and ways to play that this set brings with the singles, trinkets and cells and what not. Singles are a great way of doing what they do, I was thinking of making a card that when you buy it, you follow a set of instructions, then trash the card immediately, so it never ends up in your deck, but the singles work even better for what you are doing, however it may not work as well for my card.
Excellent stuff +1!

Maybe simply Village and its brothers in arms.

The presence of at least one of them changes the possible strategies dramatically.

Amen to that!

39
Soo many great cards! :D
I do love myself some good Ill Gotten Gains. I really like that it does take some thinking about, but once you understand its power, you have a mini-mind explosion. It is also great that it isn't always a must but, such as when there is trader, or watchtower, or other cursers on the board, so you actually have to think about whether it is a wise strategy in the kingdom or not. That makes for a great card.

These are in no order of preference, but I also agree with the cards City, Tactician, Cultist, and Duke. All awesome cards. Those city stack smacks make for satisfying turns, and as Theory stated on the dominion blog, it is very nicely thematic, which adds a nice little bonus. It is very cool to see that Cultist evolved from a cool card, from Inn, in Donald X's Dominion outtakes (under 'The Early Days' section, +2 cards, you may play another Inn) into an excellent and fun junking attack. Is is great that even when the ruins run out, you are still happy t have them in your deck, with the possibly of crazy card chains!

This one was coined in a game at our house today:
The Bank-Spank: When a player plays a bank effectively, playing it after many treasures, or playing many copies one after the other, gaining immense amounts of coin.

Sure this has been done before, but after seeing a typo in another thread today:

Chancellar
Action
$3

+1 Action
You may immediately put your deck into your discard pile.
Discard any number of cards. +1 card per card discarded.

Chancecellar
Action
$1

Reveal the top card of your deck. Discard it.

If it has an even cost:

+1 Action
Discard any number of cards. +1 card per card discarded.

That is great.  ;D +1

Also:

Destroyer: $6 -Action/Attack
Reveal the top 3 cards of each other players deck.
If the player is playing big money, trash all revealed treasure.
If the opponent is playing an engine, trash all revealed villages.
If the opponent is playing a rush, he gains a curse, copper and you get +1VP.
If your opponent has been reduced to a slog, +2 cards for him. +1 high-five.

What card do you really appreciate the existence of? Cards that make you go, "Man, Don really nailed it with this one", or "Dang this card is soo cool/fun/hilarious/exciting/thematic that I can hardly contain myself!". There are soo many great cards in Dominion. So which ones grab your fancy and sit on your imortal podium of preference?

For me, one of these cards is Minion. 8)
It's just great, Donald was definitely having a good day that day. I am by no means a expert on it, as I have only played with it once or twice. One of these times was the other day, and it was really fun. I think it adds some unique gameplay, and is very satisfying when you minion shuffle your way to eight coins to claim the province, whilst sifting through your deck and slashing an arm or leg off your opponent's hand size.

I searched the forums and saw that a favourite card list had been done before, however this is slightly different. Favourite cards are a definite for discussion, but throw others in to that you think improve Dominion!

Someone on Iso once embargoed the Curses against me, they thought that when someone gained a Curse, they would gain a Curse.
That is great :P

I want to embargo the province pile to kingdom come... Then the Duchy. Havent' done that yet.

I've certainly done this.  Usually I'm going for some Alt VP like Fairgrounds.

Indeed, shall make a mental note of that!

Embargo is a pretty brutal card... You could potentially, with KC or TR assault the green cards soo much that it evolves into a game of 'who can lose the least VP while we three pile out this game'...

Maybe you can even remember every single card that's left in your deck at every point during the game. If you do, good job, Rainman! If you don't, like me, you can at least have a general idea about what's left.

If you, the Dutch champion of 2012 can't remember every card in your deck, then there is hope for us all :)

Dominion FAQ / Re: Time Setting of Dominion?
« on: July 03, 2013, 11:42:50 am »
Excellent, thanks heaps!!

Yeah, my original thought was to make cards that benefit each of the five core 'strategies' in Dominion: Engine, Big Money, Combo, Rush, and Slog. Each card type you have a different themed race that was vaguely reminiscent of that type of card. One of my first thoughts was "Oh!  Ancient Greeks! They were smart! They should be the race for the Engine themed cards!" However then I realised I might be a few hundred years off... In the end I guess it doesn't really matter too much, hey I might still end up using the Greeks (or people who resemble them closely in look, but aren't strictly named "greek" o the card).

{Quite sorry if I unintentionally offend anyone from my themes being seen as racist}

What races/cultures did exist/were prominent at this time? You guys seem to know about 10x more on this subject than me :)
Some ideas:
- English/British: Big Money (Had many castles, extravagance, and much conquered land)
- Mandarin/Oriental: Engine (as they were quite advanced[?were they?], and worked fluently)
- African/tribal: Slog (As many of them were content living in the land, not advancing rapidly like other cultures)
- Middle Eastern [Mongols could be interesting]: Rush (Don't know enough about culture)
- Nordic/Viking: Combo/Attack (raided and pillaged)

I could possibly be mixing these time periods up, but there is my stab at it!
