Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion Fan Card Contest

I am a sans serif Superman and my only kryptonite is pretentious buzzkills like you.

This thread has gone to a weird place.

And I'm all for it, actually.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Fan Cards on Isotropic?
« on: October 28, 2011, 09:59:51 am »
I could see fan cards as a way of keeping isotropic around beyond the pending isotropicalypse.

Once there's an commercial online version of Dominion out, Doug has agreed to take isotropic down. But would he consider keeping it up with only fan cards?

Obviously in its new form, isotropic wouldn't be anywhere nearly as popular as it is now and it would cater to a completely different crowd (well, mostly different crowd… I'm sure a fair amount of us forum nerds would still check it out once in a while). But just seems like a shame for it to go away entirely, given how awesome it is and how much work has gone into it to make it that awesome for something as silly as "copyright" and "not wanting to get sued by RGG." (Not that RGG would sue.)

What do you all think? Any other major trends you see stemming from Hinterlands?
Games take forever, with the endless re-shuffling of hands, drawing cards and discarding them, forcing your opponent to draw and then discard, etc.

I almost can't imagine playing Hinterlands in real life, with all the complex interactions.

Call me old fashioned, but I vastly prefer playing good ol' meatspace Dominion, rather than isotropic. Nothing against isotropic, I love its elegance, but if I had to pick one or the other, I'd go with the genuine article.

That said.

This brings up an interesting thought, could Hinterlands be considered the first "post-isotropic" expansion? We know Donald and the gang have playtested on isotropic in the past, but could Hinterlands be the first time the majority of the playtesting was done online rather than offline? Donald mentioned a good chunk of Hinterlands was developed in 2010, which means it's certainly a possibility.

I can't help but think that if playtesting still took place exclusively IRL that Hinterlands would have wound up less complex.

Not that I'm complaining. I for one can't wait to go to the (semi)FLGS in a few weeks and buy Hinterlands and splay out a ton of cards on the table in front of me each turn, throw some back on top of the deck, and gain some more cards like a fool, lather, rinse, repeat. It's just interesting to think about.

General Discussion / Re: Game: Dominion sentences

I suppose this depends on whether I'm allowed to use Dickensian opening lines...

i will venture to say that the op won't mind if you expand on this idea.

Oh geez… Lookout, there's going to be some Torturous puns in this thread. And they won't even be Mine for a change.

I can't think of a non-terminal trasher, is there one in Dominion play that I am not thinking of?

Upgrade and Apprentice are the only two non-terminal trashers that come to mind. I'd say non-terminal trashers are no more verboten than non-terminal Attacks. They exist, but they are rare, and must be carefully considered when being designed.

Which isn't to say that other cards shouldn't be carefully considered.

Noble Brigand, I'm looking at you.

(Just kidding.)

(No, seriously, I'm kidding. Noble Brigand is totally fine.)

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Think outside the box: what's missing?

Very nice indeed. :D

As a supplementary question (extremely easy if you have the first one), complete this list:

Native Village
Pearl Diver

Secret Chamber, right?

And now Fool's Gold and... Jack of All Trades!

Indeed. And add Cache to the initial puzzle as well.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Isotropic request. Level by # of players
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:24:36 am »
I quasi-second this. Even though it would probably be super difficult to implement.

Perhaps slightly easier to implement (?) would be a Popular Buys and Best/Worst Openings list on CouncilRoom.com that's based on player count.

i.e., we know that Thief and Pirate Ship are at the bottom of the barrel on Win Rate With, but if there were a Popular Buys chart for 3p or 4p only games, I'm sure they'd hop up quite a few spots. I'm not sure how many, but I bet numbers could be crunched to find out.

I don't know how much longer isotropic will be around (that will be a sad day), but I'm guessing CouncilRoom.com will be around even once isotropic is gone, yes? Let's crunch some numbers!

Eureka. Finally figured this out. Wow, that really bugged me. I'm glad no one posted the reason for the answer, though, because I totally would have cheated.

For those of you looking for another hint, we're going international in the spoiler tags. Hold onto your butts.

The German version of this list is as follows:

Dieb (Thief)
Markt (Market)
Anbau (Upgrade)
Lakai (Minion)
Bazar (Bazaar)
Werft (Wharf) (two for two… go Wharf!)
Stadt (City)
Ernte (Harvest)

Hopefully that helps. Or just further confuses. Either way.

Two fun facts I found out while putting together that list:

1) In German, Walled Village is called "Carcassonne." Awesome.

2) In German, +Coin is called "virtuelles Geld." Literally "virtual money." Also awesome.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Anyone speak Spanish? How about Ukrainian?
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:23:46 pm »
That's some pretty solid Ukrainian, thanks for the translations… sorry I called you goofy.

Funny you should mention that you're still following Magic but not playing it. That's where I'm at. The double-sided Innistrad cards intrigue me.

Double-sided Dominion cards for expansion #9? Come on, you know you want to.

I ask because there were recently links to not one, but two interviews with Donald posted on BoardGameGeek, but neither of them are in English. As you may have guessed, one interview is in Spanish and the other one is in Ukrainian.

Google Translate does a fair job with both of them, and Donald's goofy personality sort of comes through, but having a non-robot translate either would be awesome.

It seems like most of Donald's interviews are in other languages… not sure why that is. I bet he's huge in Japan, though.

I second/third/fourth… what everyone above has said, rinkworks, this is awesome. If this were on BGG, I'd give some serious thumbs.

My favorite part was pointing out that Grand Market and Caravan aren't internally consistent with their vanilla +1s. That's the type of thing I normally notice and my friends normally make fun of me for noticing. I'm not going to make fun of you for it, well done.

As a quasi-addendum to the guide, if people are looking for art for their cards, the rabbit hole known as DeviantArt is a great place to look for both art and inspiration. I defy you to look at the Digital Art Landscapes section and not immediately come up with a half dozen ideas for cards. (Obviously you should contact the artist before using their work, but I imagine most would be more than happy to so long as they're credited.)

I've never made any fan cards, but now I'm thinking about it. And, if nothing else, I think it will lead to creation of higher quality fan cards from others in the future. Here's hoping!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Walled Village availability

I'm hoping to find it somewhere in the hallowed halls of PAX next weekend, I mean, somebody must have it, right? There's like a bazillion retailers there, and Dominion tournaments to boot.

From Donald X's "The Secret History of the Dominion Cards" (which can be found in these forums):

Quote
Chancellor: When Valerie got her copy of the game at Origins 2007, she also got a copy of the first expansion as I had it then. So when cards left the main set, she knew all about those expansion cards, and on one occasion nominated this card to be swapped into the main set. I think she was looking for another +coins card, to provide another anti-Thief option. I really like having the card in the main set, as it's simple but subtle. New players are always like, huh? Why would I want to do that?

Emphasis is mine.  Valerie is a reference to Valerie Putman (I believe she contributed to the development of the game and helped demo it for RGG at Origins), but inessential to understanding what he's saying about the card here.

Bah. Clearly I should have re-read some Secret Histories before posting. It's been so long since I read the base set one.

So I've decided in the future when a newbie asks what's the point of Chancellor, I'll tell them "it's tough to explain, you'll just have to play more Dominion to figure it out."

I feel like that's a very "Dad" answer, which would have been fitting to tell the Mom who asked the question.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: iPhone App
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:55:28 am »
Cool man. I'll PM you my UDID.

Have you considered trying to make your app universal? i.e. iPad compatible. None of the randomizers that are on the App Store are universal presently, so that would help differentiate you on the market.

Digging the gradients on the dual-type cards in the screenshots, by the way. Fancy.

Dominion General Discussion / Explaining Chancellor to new players…
« on: August 13, 2011, 04:36:03 pm »
I taught Dominion to some folks this past week. Two friends and one of their mothers. Everyone really liked it, which is always great, including the mother (who I figured wouldn't really get it, but she wound up winning, so there you go).

Anyway, as I usually do when teaching new people, at the end of the game I whipped out the Randomizer deck to show everyone (really just the mother) the other cards from the base game. Throne Room got some oooohs and ahhhs, and Witch got some gasps when I revealed the Curse card, but then we came to Chancellor.

I have two questions for Chancellor:
  • How do you explain the purpose of Chancellor to new players?
  • Why is Chancellor in the base set?
Obviously only Donald can answer #2 definitively, but I'm sure some of us have theories. To me, it seems like it would fit better elsewhere. It synergizes with Counting House in Prosperity. It complements Intrigue's "choice" theme. And it definitely has an effect on your next turn, ala Seaside.

"What's the point of Chancellor?" Mom asked.

I tried to explain to her that it acts as a sort of "deck accelerator" and helps with "cycling" and that entire articles had been written about it, but by then she had moved onto figuring out the math of Gardens.

Other Games / Re: Are any Dominion inspired games worth playing?
« on: August 03, 2011, 12:11:04 pm »
Has anyone here tried/seen Quarriors? It's the "dice-building" game.

I like dice, and I love Dominion, so I'm cautiously optimistic for this. From what I can glean from 'Geek, it seems more like "Ascension with dice" than "Dominion with dice" unfortunately… but maybe someone here can say otherwise?
