Gah!  Yes, I was talking about her Grandfather.  And that isn't the first time I've been corrected on that, I just can't get it into my head that he isn't her father for some reason, maybe because I don't like the Donna episodes enough to watch them much (aside from a few instant classics like Silence in the Library).

Well, and Wilf is a better parent than Donna's mother. Her mother is just downright rotten and miserable, and I just kind of wished that maybe she was replaced with some alien. It does explain why Donna was so neurotic.

But I hate the character of Donna's mother.

Agreed 110%.

Donna's Dad is never seen - he died before her first appearance in the series. Presumably you're talking about Wilf, her grandfather. /pedantic
On a less technical note, what about all the other pre-revival companions, or... Adam, Sarah Jane, Astrid (okay, yeah I wouldn't include her either), Craig, or for Pete's sake, at least Jackie?

Anyway, yeah Dr. Who is fantasy (perhaps Science Fantasy or Space Fantasy or I have no problem with Time Travel Fantasy). But Star Trek, no, that's genuinely Sci-Fi. Or at least it was until the last couple movies...

Original series companions:

Ace >> everyone else >> Adric

Hmmm more seriously

Ace > The Brigadier > Sarah Jane > Jamie > Romana > Turlugh > Ian > Barbara > Susan > Nyssa > Tegan > Adric

Those are the ones that immediately come to mind in attempting to rank, not sure how I'd fit others in.  I've been watching Davison episodes recently.

Hey, did they ever resolve the fact that the Doctor has a granddaughter? I think I recall (possibly incorrectly) in the Dr. Who specials that they talk about his granddaughter but then just never made mention of it after the first series.

That would be Susan!

As long as we're talking our potentially controversial companion choices, why don't we rank them?

River > Amy > Clara > Martha > (Rory's Dad > Donna's Dad >) Rory > Jack > Donna > Rose > Mickey

I like Clara quite a bit.  Despite the feeling that she's trying to be a slightly-less-gorgeous Amy, I like that they play around with the companion tropes a bit.  Like when the Doctor tells her to stay put and she actually stays put much to his amazement.

P.S. Yes, Doctor Who is totally time-travel fantasy.  Nothing wrong with that.

black vienna is only a 3-6 player game...

Yeah, I guess I didn't think that through, was so caught up in the idea of suggesting something helpful for a mini-game.  As-written, there are only 27 suspects with a group of 3 guilty and 36 cards you can use to investigate.  If you distributed them too thinly, no one would have enough information to make it worthwhile.

Anyway, the basic concept of how the game works seems like it would be easy to implement, even if it would have to be changed somewhat.

Sorry if this isn't helpful.

There may be a CLUE board game style mini-game added into this game. I am currently brain-storming ideas for ways to do this that don't distract too much from the mafia game itself and isn't too much work for me, your lazy mod. I'll keep you updated on whether or not this is going to happen. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, Yuma, I don't know if you care, if you're still thinking about this, or if this is even along the lines you're looking for, but Black Vienna works really well online and with delayed posts in forums.

It's trivially easy to retheme using names of forumites or Dominion cards or something for the letters, or it might be a concept that could work well without stealing the rules exactly.  (Also, you don't need to buy it to have everything you need to play it, can just make up each player's assigned cards in PM, look at the files in the BGG link above.)

Obviously this may be way off from what you were looking for, and if so, disregard!

Horray!

Baron/Scout is a great way to accelerate up to Stash!

Honestly though, many of the complaints about Goko seem to amount to laziness in their not bothering to code in things they might reasonably be expected to do.  Do you really think they'd go that far out of their way to make it so you can't play with the script running?  I can't really see it happening.

3037
It takes a little bit of coding... Which obviously Goko hasn't done.

It seems like this is the answer to 90% of the stupid crap about Goko.

Their rating system being some reality-warping, madness inducing, brain-melting formula that Man Was Not Meant To Know accounts for the other 10%.

I wish Donald still read these forums so that I could pedantically complain about not being able to force a resignation during Possession on goko.

You know, I haven't been reading this forum that long, but I can already see the insufficient pedantry is our biggest flaw.

I have played before elsewhere though, so I'm not an idiot.

Implying that anyone who doesn't play Mafia is an idiot? :P

Also, welcome.

Also, I'll probably join a game soon. It might be this one.

More that I won't start with "Hey guys, it says here I'm a 'doctor'.  Is that good?"
I'm not some expert or anything, and the forum setting is new to me, I've usually played in person.

No, if I was going to accuse someone of being an idiot for not liking what I like, it'd be those people that don't like Dominion.   ;D

Also, please join this one.  The wait to start is killing me, and I haven't even been waiting very long, unlike everyone else.

Hey, I love Diplomacy!  Didn't see this because it is so far down, but Twisted Archer pointed it out.

This will be my first Mafia game on f.ds!  I have played before elsewhere though, so I'm not an idiot.  Also, I play a lot of Diplomacy.

I'm not playing any games right now, but I suspect I might like to at some point.

when I'm up 40-7 he resigns

That doesn't seem like a ragequit, more like a polite resignation.  In many games, resigning when you know you're dead and not forcing the game to play out to the end is considered polite, depending on how long the rest of the game is expected to last.  Not that you have to resign, I never resign, always hoping my opponent will have a rapid-onset case of stupid, but it's standard practice in chess, for example.

Other Games / Re: Any Go players?

I love Go.  And I'm terrible at it.

I mean, I'm better than people that played twice with their friends in college or whatever, but old men that sit around playing with it have to give me a pretty substantial handicap.  Fortunately, Go is easy to handicap!

3047
This post gives me hope that although I'm not a very good player, I could someday be rated with the best of them through dumb luck and Goko's eldritch rating system.  (Or, you know, improving.  But who wants to take the time for that?)

Other Games / Re: Puzzle Strike
« on: June 25, 2013, 01:05:05 am »
I had a former roommate who was really into Puzzle Strike.  I played it a ton and grew to hate it, honestly my hatred of Puzzle Strike is a large part of why it took me so long to get into Dominion.  (Yes, I know Dominion came first, but I played Puzzle Strike first and wasn't buying unplayed boardgames from BGG recommendations until a year or two ago.)

I've been trying to figure out what exactly it is that put me off Puzzle Strike, given that Dominion is probably my favorite game at present.  I think it might be the "attack the player to your left" mechanic that makes the end of multiplayer games seem like a cascade of unfairness based on seating.  That and the balance issues, I know I didn't play the most recent version.

Also, weird as it is, I like Dominion's theme better! I'd rather rationalize Upgrading my Chapel into a Tunnel for some reason.  Maybe I just dislike fighting games too much...

Other Games / Re: Chess

I love chess but I haven't played in years.  I have far too many other hobbies and at some point it sunk in that although I might be one of the stronger players at my college, that was nothing in the real world.  At least other boardgames have comparatively little theory established.

I still love it though, find myself using chess as a metaphor for everything.  But I don't play anymore and don't know that I'll ever get back into it.
