Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Preview #5: Herald
« on: June 07, 2013, 11:11:55 am »
So Donald said you can overpay to put Heralds on top of your deck but we've determined that the on-buy effects (results of overpaying) happen before the card is gained. Was he just refering to other Heralds that you have played or bought on previos turns?

52
and dont go for Toasts if there is no Toaster on the Board. Go for a simple bread strategy instead.

I don't know if this is a common thing outside the US, (insert first world problems meme here) but here in the states this is hilarious.

53
There are other benefits of buying cards. You can play more of the adventures, and you can play against the Bots with more than just base. So there is a little incentive for people to buy the sets rather than just looking for games against other players.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: How fast do you expect people to play?
« on: April 24, 2013, 03:24:30 am »
If you're taking a full minute every turn, i'm going to get pissed and rage quit. 15 or 20 seconds even to start your turn (not the first turn, of course) is a bit too long (try counting to 15 right now and you'll see that it's very long). But you have to play at your own pace. Don't rush yourself if it hurts your chances of playing your turn ideally.

Given the last couple expansions, I don't think we should expect previews until at least late May...
I am just hoping to get them at all! May is fine. The way I had read DXV's previous comments, it sounded pretty pessimistic about seeing any previews.

Yeah, considering he hasn't even logged on here to the forums in over a month, I wonder if we've lost his favor.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Number of games on Goko

It's funny to see how # of games played always spikes on the weekends. Not surprising though, just funny to see...

This game I played today, my opponent was two Colonies ahead of me. But man, my strategy was better, I had just taken the rest of the Curses thanks to my opponent's Torturers, I had finished draining the Farming Village pile with Workshop, and I had just used 3 Horns of Plenty to pick up King's Court/City/City. These Level 2 Cities were the only source of +buy, and my opponent had none. Which means I could safely drain the City pile to 2 if I wanted--he had no way to gain more than 1 thing per turn. Which also means I had him totally defeated; I could afford perhaps 2 more turns of building before a huge Horns/Kings/Cities/(and Bishop!) megaturn got me all the rest of those points. And I had planned this, I hadn't panicked when I fell behind in Colonies, or when I had accepted 3 Curses.

To play Devil's Advocate here...

An opponent who is already going Colonies who just gave you all the curses on a torturer board without buying any cities is probably newb enough to not recognize what you are building up to as an epic comeback. I know I wouldn't. I would think I've got this game in the bag. My first thought is that it was just a disconnect rather than a quit...maybe. Still your point about getting a rating boost when your opponent quits is tops on my complaint list too.

BTW

Devil's Advocate
$6 Victory - Reaction

4VP

When another player plays an attack card you may reveal this. If you do, you are unaffected by that attack, trash this card and gain a Duchy.

Edit: changed cost and VP

I asked about the new lobbies on GetSatisfaction the other day and John Q. replied

"We believe it's about to get very busy..."

I wonder what surprises the Goko crew has in store for us right around the corner that are going to bring in the customers in droves...

Rules Questions / noble brigand and rogue
« on: April 01, 2013, 01:36:53 am »
When i trash golds and silvers with noble brigand do I gain a copy of the trashed golds and silvers, or do I gain the actual card that was trashed. In other words will there be golds and silvers in the trash? We played noble brigand with rogue (which gains cards from the trash) the other night and we couldn't agree on how noble brigand gains its golds and silvers.

EDIT: Just played this deck on Goko and I gained the actual golds and silvers from the trash when i play a noble brigand. So Rogue was a little less useful in that case.

How about...

When this card is in play, for each turn it is not discarded during your clean up phase place a coin on it. You may spend the tokens at any time during your action phase.
1 coin = +1card/+1 action
2 coins = +2 actions\+1 buy
3coins = +2 cards/+1 action/+2 money
When you spend the coins place the card on your discard pile.
...
Or something like that.

Why are they selling a "super pack" of Intrigue, Seaside, and Prosperity for 230 Gokoins (stupid name) when those sets sell for 70 Gokoins each? Direct quote from the product description:

"Save over 15% by buying the 'Dominion - Super Pack' rather than buying each expansion individually".

What the hell? This seems incredibly disingenuous. This is a game with an analytical player base, and I doubt many people bought the packs rather than doing the math on buying the individual sets first.

Actually it is less expensive to buy the Super Pack, it only costs $20 to buy 230 gokoins for the super pack compared to the $21 it would cost to buy 70 gokoins for $7 three times. I think that when they say that you can "save over 15%" they are referring to the 15% bonus they give you when you buy all your gokoins at once instead of individually.

It is very stupid to give you a 15% bonus (230 coins for the cost of 200) and then charge you back that bonus by increasing the cost of the super pack but math doesn't seem to be their strong suit.
That's their reasoning as well, and it doesn't make sense. If you buy the 230 Gokoins, you damn still buy the cheap sets with them.

Ah, I see what I did there, I fell for their trickery. It is cheaper to buy the 230 coins in one go, but to buy the expansions individually...

How about a Tac enabler like "when you play this you may play up to 2 treasures from your hand, then continue your action phase"

Tac would be better, it would work well with things like draw to x cards, and minion (your decision to discard your hand would be easier)...

I assume you play enough games that there are plenty to choose from. I think it would be best to post the games where a strategic lesson can be learned by us, whether you win or not. If I want to watch a random game with no strategic input or feedback, I would watch myself play on Goko... I think that games filmed and posted should have a reason to be posted, either a new strategy that you learned, or a good example of a typical strategy that worked for you, or pointing out typical errors that newbs make (villiage idiot...etc.) Anyway, each episode should have a lesson of some sort.

I had the same delay, I purchased the coins, saw the purchase post to my bank account, and after a half an hour the coins appeared in my virtual account. That shouldn't happen. I think I had to log out and then back into my goko account to see the coins update.

not sure how familiar you are with it, but i would recommend playing puerto rico. it's mostly a tactical game, so you might enjoy that with a chess background. i used to play quite a bit online (via this site) before i found dominion but i am not sure where the best place to play it is these days.

You can play a lot of live games on BoardGameArena including Puerto Rico. Also Yucata.de is becoming more of a live game site now.

We all have to learn German now because BSW will be the only place we can find it online anymore...

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Why aren't *you* playing on Goko?
« on: March 03, 2013, 11:21:49 am »
Two main reasons:

2 - Security concerns.  I've heard enough problems with Goko's security that I just don't trust them with my $$$ (well, specifically with my card details, but whatever).

I guess i'll be the first to remind you (and anyone else that lists this as a concern) that Goko never sees your card info, you pay through paypal, which is secure enough.

I'm not trying to convince you to play on goko, your other concerns are valid enough to keep you away if you want to, you just don't need to list security (when it comes to money) as a reason to stay away.

I played a game the other day where my opponent had to be AFK for 5 minutes. From what I could tell, he never came back but after about 5-7 minutes (I didn't keep exact time) the game ended and I got the message that my opponent had left the game. I still didn't get the rank increase, but I wonder if this is their first step toward eliminating inactive players.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Why aren't *you* playing on Goko?
« on: February 19, 2013, 05:43:08 pm »

-If you want "pro" leaderboard, you cannot see what expansions are included in the game, and you most likely end up in a base only game, which you don't want to play.

I wonder if they could program in next to the picture of the person hosting a game a little letter for each of the expansions you might be playing with. "D" for base set, "S" for seaside, etc... This would help to avoid those base only games that many of us don't like playing.

Is this something that someone with no programming experience should avoid messing around with? I can't seem to make heads or tails of any of this...Or can someone give me an step-by-step way to put this into Chrome? Specifically I can't figure how to paste the code after I pres ctrl-shift-j in a goko game.

Cheapest seems to be:
Intrigue, Seaside and Prosperity at 70 each = 210,

I hadn't even noticed that one.  I imagine that wasn't their intent.  Or maybe it was?

The super packs also include "access to all their adventures". So you don't have to purchase the adventure finales when you buy the pack. That seems like a high price to pay for things you can purchase just by playing the game.

Help! / I only won because he messed up...?

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20130130-074921-9e9cab9e.html

I won, but only because my opponent made an error (I assume) with his forge on turn 18. How could I have played this more efficiently?

I underestimated the value of forge as the only gainer on this board so I think I waited too long to pick one up, but what else could I have done differently?

Is chancellor/stash a viable option?

I'm hoping for a treasure card that you can play during the action phase of your turn without using an action. Or a card that turns victory cards in your hand into money. (Not Feodum)

Is it still down? None of the games I've played since 1/20 have posted and I would like to post a gamelog.
