Even so, it's as good to have three Poor Houses in hand as three Gold, and a whole bunch cheaper!

And the indications are that the outfit is custom made rather than off-the-shelf, so will be the cosplayer's intellectual property, too.

Situational, but actually kinda nifty when you know, or can guess, what's at the bottom of your deck.

My personal favourite promo, for what it's worth, is Prince. A nifty effect, but a price so high you've got an interesting decision to make: will buying it let you gain at least one extra Province?

Many FLGSes also use International Tabletop Day as a pretext for raising some money for charity.

And I can't find the details right now, but I remember a big charity drive to bring boardgames to children in developing countries, particularly in Africa. They're social, they help develop all sorts of skills, and they require no electricity. (-8

Pageant illustrates that being done for Coffers as a Project, which is perhaps the simpler mechanism.

Would it be OK for the number of Villagers one buys to be unlimited? Maybe...

The terminology I use when teaching Dominion is that playing Treasures gives you "coins to spend this turn", and playing something like Market gives you "an extra coin to spend this turn".

If I use that terminology consistently from the outset, people are seldom confused.

(Digression: A4 is a sensible size of paper used everywhere except North America. Importantly, each size in the A series is half as big as the next and they all have sides in the ratio 1:√2. This means you can cut a sheet of A3 in half to make a sheet of A4, or cut a sheet of A4 in half to make a sheet of A5, and so on. You can also, for example, make an A4 rules booklet out of folded and stapled sheets of A3, which means life is a whole lot simpler for graphic designers and printers.

The reason the dimensions of A4 don't initially look sensible in either metric of US is that the area of a sheet of A0 is exactly 1m². The area of a sheet of A4 is exactly 1/16m².)

Here's a brute-force version:

You've bought Capitalism.

Mint is in the kingdom.

You have a Watchtower in hand.

At the start of your turn, you have four Ghosted Universities, four Princed Throne Rooms, four Princed Lurkers, four Caravans on duration.

Four times over:
  • Play a Princed Throne Room, choose Teacher, play Teacher (twice).
  • Call Teacher.
  • Play a Ghosted University. Gain a Mint, trashing the Teacher from play. (Doesn't matter what second card you gain.)
  • Play a Princed Lurker, gain Teacher from the trash, react with Watchtower to top-deck it.
  • Bring a Caravan off duration to draw the Teacher.

It strikes me you'd be way more likely to save up card tokens in a game without a good source of +Buy, if you can see you're already reaching $8 this turn?

It's not quite an answer, but bear in mind you could take different cards each term.

462
I'd be very surprised if it turned out you couldn't put what you wanted on top when shuffling because of Famine; there's no reason it should be different from any other shuffle.

463
Hmm. Might be time for someone, somehow, to run through the rest of the artwork Joshua Stewart has done for Dominion. At first glance, I notice that Canal is deeply reminiscent of Canaletto's work, but he's too dead to care.

I wonder what the contract between Rio Grande and the artists says about such matters?

The player has to get out of their seat, peer over their neighbour's shoulder, make all their decisions, and wait for clean-up, sometimes more than once.
Wait... people don't literally do that, do they? On those rare occasions when I've played using Possession, the Possessed player has just passed their hand to the Possessor who's taken a turn then passed back the discards. The phrasing about the Possessed person taking a turn and the Possessor making the decisions is just to make clear who "you" is in card text!

I don't sleeve Dominion, but for games I do sleeve, I use Ultra Pro ProMatte, in clear and in in a variety of colours. They were recommended to me by friends who play Magic: The Gathering and I can see why!

The bad news is that, from GamesLore 2,650 of them would cost £100.20 (including their 5% discount for orders over £100). )-8

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: Capitalism Questions
« on: December 29, 2018, 08:51:54 am »
all Capitalism essentially does is let you play certain Action cards during your Buy phase.
That's not true, and potentially somewhat misleading. Capitalism makes those Action cards be Treasures for all purposes. You could buff them with Mine, duplicate them with Mint, discard them to Stables, gain them with Hero... whatever!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: New mechanics in Renaissance
« on: December 28, 2018, 10:43:39 pm »
Although the distinction would be subjective, it might be worth splitting the list into two sections: mechanics that feel substantially new in play, and mechanics that are new in more subtle ways.

For example, Patron's when-reveal trigger feels like a much bigger deal than Exeriment's trick of gaining a second without that then gaining a third.

(If we're being pedantic, though, I'll note that Caravan Guard is a (non-Treasure) Action you can play in the Buy phase. Albeit not your own Buy phase. (-8 )

Mountain Village + Scheme
At the start of your turn, play Mountain Village and pull Scheme from your discard pile, then play it.
During clean-up, use Scheme to top-deck Mountain Village.

The net effect is a +1 Action each turn, Barracks for $4+$3 rather than $6.Well, until you reshuffle, at least...

Rules Questions / Re: Fleet extra turns
« on: December 23, 2018, 08:29:08 pm »
I don't think your alternative is an improvement. Terms like "about-to-end state" are not necessary.
Even if you don't give the state a label, it has to exist: in a Fleet/Ambassador game, there's nothing else which can let you know whether or not the game should end.

Though actually, it turns out you also need to track who triggered game-end, and who had bought Fleet at that point.

(I'm assuming there's someone working on the online version who's already formalised this stuff?)

Rules Questions / Re: Fleet extra turns
« on: December 23, 2018, 09:15:23 am »
the game instead continues for one more round if any player has bought Fleet
[...]
when the last Fleet turn has been played, the game ends immediately
To me, those two statements verge on being mutually contradictory.

Consider the case where there are players A,B,C,D. A and C have bought Fleet, and D triggers game-end. The former statement suggests there is a moment between C's turn ending and the game ending, during which D is passed over before the game ends, opening the spectre of C being able to Donate, Outpost, etc.

But the second statement closes that door.

Is this a clearer alternative?

"The game enters the about-to-end state when, at the end of someone's turn, [Provinces/Colonies/piles]. Once the game is about-to-end, non-Fleet players miss their normal turns and the game ends when, at the end of someone's turn, every Fleet player has taken one more normal turn."

Just to check the corner case on the corner case, am I right that if someone plays Possession during the Fleet round and makes the Possessed player buy Fleet, the Possessed player does then get a Fleet turn, and this could even prolong the game by a turn in the ridiculous situation that A and B have Fleet but C doesn't, then:
  • A plays Possession on their Fleet turn
  • A makes B play Possession on their Possessed turn
  • B makes C buy Fleet on their Possessed turn
  • B takes their Fleet turn
  • C does get to take their Fleet turn?

Taking the corner case on the corner case on the corner case, what happens if B and C have Fleet but A doesn't, in a three-player game with C triggering game-end:
  • (A doesn't get a Fleet turn at this because they don't have Fleet. Yet...)
  • B Possesses C on their Fleet turn
  • B has C Possess A on their Possessed turn
  • C has A buy Fleet on their Possessed turn
  • C takes their Fleet turn
  • Now, does the game end, or does A get a Fleet turn?

Two things I've been wondering in this kind of area:
  • If there's good +Buy available, how valuable is it to store up Coffers and delay greening?
  • What about gaining treasures for the Coffers, then trashing them? Here, Watchtower is living the dream, but things like Cathedral could also help.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why is Possession hated so much?

As discussed, it's dominating rather than strong.

It would be strong if your opponent built a deck worth having, but an serious and experienced player won't if Possession is on the table, preferring a horrible game to a losing one.

I guess limiting Possession to once per turn would help a bit, but I don't think it's enough to save the card.
