Even by the Village/Smithy yardstick, I'm not sure Guide and Ghost Town synergize. [...] (Guide either fails to account for the Ghost Town extra card, or throws it away.)

Uh... you're allowed to call Guide before taking Ghost Town's benefit, yes?

Village and Smithy are synergistic! You can build an engine out of the combo, but can't build an engine out of either on its own.

But you would play it either as a Copper or as a self-trashing Haven. So it's awful.
Again: it wasn't supposed to be the world's best card, just an illustration of how Treasure-Night could work mechanically.

Having said which, surely a Copper that can trash itself if you don't play it is strictly better than a Copper, even without a Haven one-shot? How good does an Heirloom have to be?

How many times has Dominion been ruined now? I've lost track.
Just once. In Dark Ages.

What specifically are you seeing in a Guide/Ghost Town synergy?
a) Timing: you can buy Ghost Town when you have a Guide in Reserve to be sure you get both effects together.
b) The combination of the hand you want, and an extra action to play it with.

I wasn't focusing so much on Ghost Town's extra draw, though that's obviously also good to have.

Awesome name. But probably much weaker than Prince, as Prince gives you a free +1 action every turn.
Well, it wouldn't exactly be a problem if Dominion included a cheaper card than Prince...

Thematically, it would kinda feel right if Prince of Darkness cost a debt of two potions. But this is way overthinking a pun. (-8

The age recommendation on the box is 8+ and even that seems low to me. While the basic concepts aren't that difficult, the strategy is deeper than in most of the games that are listed 10+.
You don't have to play deep strategy to have fun, though. And you can have fun with what strategy you can muster.

What should the minimum age for Chess be? 50?

Surely the real question here is: what's going to replace Possession as a $6+P card in second-edition Alchemy? At that price, something pretty spiffy!

...except it has you discard your hand at the end of your turn, not the beginning.

Now I'm waiting for a Prince Of Darkness promo that plays a card every Night phase!

1185
Hmm. Ghost Town will synergise quite nicely with Guide, won't it?

Save kind of already does this though.
Oh, agreed.

I wasn't trying to come up with a good Treasure-Night card - this isn't the variants forum -  just illustrate that it was a thing which could work mechanically so wasn't out of the question.

I've just noticed Adventurer in the All Cards list looks a lot like Apothecary in disguise...

It sounds like $10,000 is the more reasonable challenge.

Assertion: there is no non-pathological line of play on any kingdom that can reach $10,000 and not $1,000,000. In other words, $10,000 is high enough you can't reach it without going infinite, at which point going on to reach $1,000,000 is just a repetitive bore?

I'm thinking at least one of the heirlooms will be a Night-Treasure, because we haven't seen that dual-type yet.
It seems pointless as there isn't much of a mechanical difference between Treasures and Night cards anyway.
There are cool things you could do. The first thing right off the top of my head:

Treasure: worth $1

Night-Duration: set aside a card from your hand face down under this. If you do, at the start of your next turn put it into your hand and trash this.

So a kind of self-trashing-Copper one-shot Haven.

Thinking like this is a massive mistake and the best way to lose Dominion games.
Uh...

Good, solid, interesting stuff here!

People have said it's long; people have said it's hard to work out which example kingdom is being discussed. A simple potential solution: split the article up into a preamble then one page per kingdom?

I'm not sure I would call Shanty Town a buff. If you draw no Action cards with it, it's a Moat.
(Quite aside from what other people have pointed out...)
If you play Shanty Town with actions in hand, it's like a Necropolis. Cost: $1
If you play Shanty Town and draw no actions, it's like a Moat. Cost $2

That's a buff. (-8

If we were dealing with electronics, this would be the difference between something being edge-triggered and level-triggered. (-8

Maybe "activated effect" and "situational effect"? I dunno. We're rapidly running out of synonyms Dominion hasn't used as in-game terms.

I don't think most people can move their fingers independantly.
I was curious, so I just tried. Resting my hand on the desk, it's trivial.

Remaining curious, I found I could comfortably put forefinger in three positions, not just two, and my thumb could go in any of three positions sideways as well as up/down. So that's 144.

Years ago, in a game of Carcassonne on Xbox Live, I played a castle tile with a follower on it near my human opponent’s unfinished castle.
You mean "city", not "castle". I know a lot of people say "castle", but since the introduction of the Bridges, Castles and Bazaars expansion, it's been pretty confusing.

1196
It feels like the template for a provably optimal solution is:
• Black Market in the kingdom
• Bank in the Kingdom
• All the other kingdom piles, including a Bane, are the biggest (most cards) Treasure piles you can find
• Gain one Black Market and every Treasure in the supply, bar those you have to leave behind to avoid piling out.
• Gain one of every other kind of Treasure in the game from Black Market
• Pick up Hermit and Lurker from the Black Market. Acquire ten Madmen
• Pick up Tactician, Royal Blacksmith, Council Room, King's Court, Royal Carriage
• Pick up a Counting House and a Scavenger
• Pick up some gainers and villages
• Pick up a Bandit Camp; collect all the Spoils
• Pick up then play a Tournament; get Diadem
• Pick up Poor House!

Then:
• Put Royal Carriage in reserve
• Play Tactician the turn before (10 cards)
• Play King's Court, triple Royal Blacksmith (23 cards)
• Call Royal Carriage on KC, triple Council Room (34 cards)
• Play Madmen; draw your deck
• Play Black Market. Play lots of Treasure (but not one-shots like Counterfeit or Spoils)
• Buy Mandarin from the Black Market deck; topdeck your Treasures
• Play Scavenger, Counting House, some more Madmen
• Use a village/gainer chain to pick up the final Treasures from the Supply
• Play one final Madman to bring everything into hand
• Play Poor House

That can plainly draw more than enough cards (literally thousands). If you play a few Banks, it's plain the amount of spending money you accumulate will vastly exceed the number of Treasures you have. Then, you play Poor House with all your Treasures in hand.

Meanwhile, Black Market is the only non-Treasure Kingdom pile.

1197
How do you spend coin tokens before playing Poor House?
Villa?

1198
Incidentally, I've only just noticed: Locusts are beneficial if they hit a Curse, trashing it and giving you nothing in return, aren't they?

1199
I drew Locusts and hit my opponent's Royal Blacksmith. There was no replacement. The debt was not even paid off yet. That is way swingier than Swindler.

I don't see this as a flaw with the Hexes. Your opponent knows Locusts is 1 of 12 possible attacks. They should not have bought Royal Blacksmith.
If their Royal Blacksmith is one of 17 cards in their deck, then being hexed has only a 1 in 200 chance of trashing their Royal Blacksmith.

Avoiding an otherwise good strategy because of a 1 in 200 risk is not winning play.

And then, if you're hit by that 1 in 200 risk, you've been fantastically, exasperatingly, unlucky.

Suppose we added a Landmark, Lightning Bolt: "At the end of the game, shuffle together all the basic Treasures and this. The person with the most VP draws a card. If it's Lightning Bolt, they receive -1,000,000VP." Would you focus on not getting the most VP in case that happened? If you scored most VP and got struck by Lightning, would you give a stoic shrug and congratulate the winner? Or would you decide Lightning Bolt wasn't fun and decline to play using it?

Of course, Hexes aren't Lightning Bolt. They have the potential to be a lot of fun. But the worry of the potential no-fun downside still there.

Given two of the people I play with regularly veto Saboteur, I'm a bit concerned I'll have to house-rule Locusts away in order to get a game.

Alayna should be on the list.
She's done several pieces of artwork that really bug me.

Apart from the obvious anachronisms that have been widely noted, she seems to struggle more generally with giving her work a mediaeval feel. A lot of the time, it comes out looking like a person - frankly, an American person - with modern stature, complexion, hairstyle and demeanour who turned up at a renaissance fair in subtly inauthentic replica clothing and mysteriously unencumbering armour.
