Game Reports / Re: Workshop-Silk Road or KC-Saboteur
« on: January 16, 2014, 01:43:11 pm »
I think the engine should win here. The opening has to be a rush to Counterfeit to trash early. Festival is irrelevant to the engine - KC/KC gives better +actions, and Haggler gives better +buy. It's a race between reliable KC/Saboteur and piling out the Estates, but I think the engine player should win that race.

Edit: wow, your opponent opened Silver/Silver/King's Court, what a combo that is.

Dominion FAQ / Re: Kings Court Timing & Trashing nonreal cards
« on: January 15, 2014, 06:30:14 pm »
Actually I find this ruling unfortunate. Without this ruling, the lose track rule would cover every single case where this rule is needed (AFAIK). Because if some effect trashes a card, then that effect doesn't expect the card to be already in the trash (at least, on any published card, or any reasonable fan card), so according to the lose track rule the trashing will fail. So I don't really see the need of the "you can't trash cards in trash"-rule.
It isn't a "rule" as such, and DXV even sez so:
Quote
It's not that you can't trash a card in the trash,
His point is the same as yours - because of the Lose Track rule, if a card is in the trash, then it can't be "trashed" - moved from elsewhere (presumably from somewhere that isn't the trash).

The Lose Track Rule for programmers:

If we're thinking of the cards as "little computer programs", then Dominion cards don't have $card->move($target_location) methods, rather, they have $card->move($current_location,$target_location) methods, which, if $card is in $current_location, move it to $target_location and return true, else do nothing and return false. They also don't have $card->get_current_location() methods, so $current_location has to be the place the card is expected to be in.

Examples:

Mining Village's last clause is, "you may { if($this->move($play_area,$trash_pile)) { +$2; } }". Hence, when Mining Village is not in the play area, Lose Track applies, the move() method returns false and therefore you don't get the +$2.

Inn/Watchtower: if you choose to resolve Inn's on-gain effect before Watchtower's reaction effect, then Inn's effect is "you may {$this->move($discard_pile,$deck); } $deck->shuffle();" which succeeds, and then Watchtower's effect is "$inn->move($discard_pile,$deck);" which fails because Inn isn't in the discard pile. If you resolve them in the other order, then Watchtower's effect succeeds, and then Inn's effect fails to move the Inn because it isn't in the discard pile, but then shuffles the deck anyway.

Asymmetry should be fundamental to the design of a game - if it's just tacked on, it just feels like added unfairness.

No, same as you don't take a Copper on the $2 turn.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Card Workshop: The Copper Junker Attack
« on: January 14, 2014, 02:51:32 pm »
The first one is stronger than Cutpurse because discarding a Copper is better than topdecking it, and the, well, Copper-junking, not to mention adding a Silver to your deck. The second one is stronger than Bureaucrat because it hurts their current hand rather than their next one (plus the Copper-junking).

Help! / Re: Help Me Improve My Game
« on: January 14, 2014, 07:07:22 am »
You should usually trash when setting up any sort of engine - any strategy which aims to play a lot of action cards every turn. Your deck starts with 10 cards which actively stop you from playing more action cards - they aren't action cards themselves, and whenever you might draw more action cards to play, you might instead draw one of those 10 cards and your chain ends. If you get as many of those 10 cards out of your deck, then you'll find your action cards chaining together a lot more often.

Other times you won't play for an engine, but some trashing can still assist the strategy.

The other thing is that online Dominion should be a lot cheaper to create than Halo, and in a competitive marketplace (online Dominion does compete with other online board games) prices are driven down towards the marginal cost of production. Even if online Dominion turns out to cost exactly the same as online Halo, that still isn't a good deal because you can more readily compare it to other online board games which are expected to be cheaper.

AND IF YOU DON'T, YOU ARE WRONG!?" No,
Indeed, you aren't "wrong", just silly. There's a big difference - Morecambe and Wise are wrong, and Monty Python are silly.

"They"/"them"/"their" are acceptable in the meanwhile.

I will use he/she or bend over backwards to avoid using pronouns altogether before I will use they/them/their when referring to a single entity.
Then you are very silly.

Ozle, did anyone even think that joke was funny ten years ago?

Perhaps more stylish, you should play Gallows The Cavalry when your opponent has a Province in hand and you don't, then later in the same turn reveal the gained Province with Tournament, after removing the Province from your opponent's hand with Pillage.

« on: January 13, 2014, 03:07:12 pm »
What is sufficient for "determined"? Can I just tell everybody I'm male, or do you actually have to verify it empirically?

It is impossible to empirically test for maleness in a reasonable time frame. Contrary to fairly common belief, it is independent from genitals and DNA. Both psychology and sociology take too long and are too inaccurate for this application.
It would be entirely stupid for us to have different pronouns depending on biological sex, especially considering biological sex isn't any less of a grey area than gender is. The correct way to determine which pronouns to use when referring to someone is to ask them, "which pronouns should I use when referring to you?". This may correlate with their gender. "They"/"them"/"their" are acceptable in the meanwhile.

Revealing one's gender is anyway not a prerequisite for edge-casing and Scout jokes.

Help! / Re: FG non-mirror, no trashing
« on: January 11, 2014, 06:12:15 pm »
I think you went too much for the Stables - they are nice for your deck, so it's a tough call, but against an engine, especially Possession, you need a headstart on greening. E.g. on turn 9 you buy 2*Stables, but Province+FG would have been better. Your opponent's City plan would have been a lot slower if you hadn't done the work of emptying the Stables pile.

It's sometimes possible to buy all of the Provinces in one turn.

So on a point you made: is it possible to buy more than 1 province a turn?  That would require 16 gold coins and 2 buys!  That's quite a hand if you could get it.  Is it possible?
Oh, you are going to enjoy Dominion.

It may be that Goko's license with RGG is non-transferrable. In that case they wouldn't actually be authorised to allow a private iso clone.

Pride and Prejudice is basically just a book... once a book is written, there's not a massive skill involved in reading it.
