You have one (or more, depending on the situation) IRL friend that you play Dominion with pretty heavily, and when somebody else brings up say, the word "Pawn" in a completely unrelated context, and you make some joke about choosing "+1 Action" and "+1 Buy", or something like that, and you and your friend are the only two people in the room that get the joke and laugh/giggle at it...

I think for me it was right around freshman year of high school, which would been 2011 or so. Got introduced by a friend. 6ish years later Dominion still remains one of my favorite board/card games.

One thing is for sure: Fairgrounds and any other card that likes variety just keeps getting better and better.

True that.

It'd be nice if there was at least one card in Nocturne that really buffed Feodum.
Not that Feodum needed a buff, but more because Feodum is my favorite alt-vp card in the game  :P

Dang it! I only noticed this now.

Hype!

I only noticed this a couple of days ago myself.

All aboard the hype train!!

HYPE!!!

Favorite cards:

Villa -- love the "goes into your hand and can be played immediately" thing. So nice for when you run out of actions but have more action cards to play and a large amount of money on hand or in your deck.
Chapel -- "Every day I'm Shuffling"

Least favorite cards:

Saboteur - so glad that that got removed from the 2nd edition of Intrigue
Edit: Someone said Harvest, and that is a pretty lame card, especially for $5

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to ask this question, but I've been out of the loop on the forums for awhile. What are these "Night Cards" supposed to be? Is it a new expansion?

At the end of his previous turn, he drew a hand of three Rats, so he probably just played them all, and it snowballed on him.
I was using Rats, too, to try to Remodel them into Hirelings/Gold, which I think may have been his intention as well.

I think it's quite rare to have a game where the Goons split matters. I'd be happy to let my opponent take 6 Goons in almost every game if that meant I got more of the draw pieces. It's really hard to play 6 Goons in a mirror match. Getting to playing 4 is even quite a feat and usually more than enough to threaten piles and score a lot of points.

https://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160731/log.0.1469983377251.txt

I think having all the Goons can be important.  :P

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Ferry/Prince Might be a Thing

Winning the Goons split can be really critical. In most cases, Prince is definitely going to be a handy engine-enabler to get to your Goons more quickly and reliably, but I can't imagine prioritizing it so high that I would Ferry it first. That seems like a good way to lose the Goons split 5-3 or even 6-2, which is catastrophic.

That is a really good point. In that case a 3/4 opening is probably the best case opening scenario on this kind of board as it allows you to buy a Goons as early as your second turn.

I picked up a album by my favorite band at the store. I wondered why it was so cheap, but then I realized they played a lot of bridges.

For all we know they could've been spending a lot of time on the Highways.

Dominion General Discussion / Ferry/Prince Might be a Thing
« on: July 30, 2016, 12:49:33 am »
Just played a game (vs a bot) where the one of the events was Ferry and there was Prince in the Kingdom. Kingdom also had cards like Goons.
Didn't save the log, but basic plan was to use Ferry to get cheaper Prince early, then switch minus $2 token to Goons, then Prince the Goons. I ended up winning by like 30. It was against a bot so that might haven an effect in how lopsided the win was but I imagine forcing the other player to discard two cards every single turn could have a pretty negative effect on them depending on the Kingdom (getting at least one extra victory point every turn was nice, too  8) ).

« on: January 06, 2015, 10:39:06 pm »
Didn't realize Store Room/Poor House was a combo like that...
Not necessarily with each other, but with scrying pool. Poor house simply gives you 4 coins in a treasureless deck, and storeroom can give you a lot more by discarding all your actions for coins and redrawing them with a single scrying pool.

Well, they sort of are a combo with each other too, since Storeroom can discard Treasures before you play Poor House. It's not relevant here though, since you shouldn't have (m)any Treasures in your deck at all.
I picked up on the need for a lack of treasure with my Scheme-Scrying Pool combo and I think that's what made it work. I got the 7 Copper at the end just for kicks and giggles because I knew the game was over anyway lol

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Card Idea: Mountain Range
« on: September 06, 2014, 08:21:33 am »
Update:
I played a solo game with the final idea for Mountain Range in it. There were no $5 or $2 cards in it so that made it a little more interesting. The things I can gather from initial playtesting is:
- Later on in the game, if both/all players are actively going for this as a strategy, the money density in their decks will be no higher than $7 in a regular non-platinum/colony game
- Coppersmith should work well with this card, but by the time Coppersmith would've been effectively used, the piles ran out
- This could be an effective counter to Swindler if it is the main strategy as Swindler and all the other trashing attacks trigger it's on trash ability
- This would not be good in a Colony game, as even if you had a ton of Copper, a good Colony player who knows what they're doing should still be able to beat you handily

yea, note that complexity is a bad thing in card design.

this is just a personal opinion, but i'd say that a good card should be unique, interesting, and simple, with "interesting" basically meaning "makes for interesting strategies". also balanced, but let's forget about that for a moment. making a card that has two of the above is actually really easy.

unique and simple: just a card with "+3$" for 4$ does the trick
interesting and simple: basic village
interesting and unique: your card.

if you just throw a lot of stuff into a card, but know some stuff about the game, you usually end up with something in the third category.
That's basically what I was trying to do, is make the card as interesting and unique as i could. Well, now it's off to playtesting it in solo mode. I'll let y'all know how it is

I wouldn't actually put the text on a physical card... I'd just have whatever version I'm playtesting available for easy reference (like on a computer screen nearby the board visible to all players) and use blank cards as proxies....

Edit: So I should remove the +Buy?

You have a point there... What would you think of:
Mountain Range -$4
+1 Card
+2 Actions
+ Buy
When you gain this, gain two Coppers,
putting them on top of your deck
__________
Worth 1 VP per every 5 Coppers in your deck
When you trash this, gain 5 Coppers
If you gain this outside of your Buy phase,
trash it
