I love Apprentice.

Game Reports / In which Rats is actually quite a decent card

This is an interesting game I just played where Expand and Remodel both being in the same kingdom facilitate quick and useful Rats usage.
The questions I have are: Do you think my use of Rats was too light, and how do I use Rats properly in general, and how do I explain proper use of Rats to a friend of mine who refuses to play with it because he thinks it's a terrible card?

What I love doing in Goons games where there's Feodum (and not necessarily any Feodum enablers) is getting up  to $7 after playing a Goons and buying Feodum/Silver and maybe getting a Province if I hit $8. It's nice because on the Feodum/Silver buys it a) Nets me 2 VP + however many VP my Feoda are worth, and b) helps pile out at least one pile. It can also be a nice strategy particularly in City games where everyone is trying to run Cities out so you only really have to pick 2 piles to try and pile out on. I think Feodum might be my favorite alt-VP card in the entire game.

I played a three=player game IRL earlier today where there was Trader, Feodum, and Masterpiece on the board. It would also be interesting to note that Butcher was on this board (Butcher proved useful for turning Masterpieces into Feoda). Naturally, the best strategy on this board was to go all Masterpiece/Trader/Feodum and burninate everyone with all my Silvers I was going to get. For some reason I got an Altar, but there just weren't that many useful fives out there, so I fed it to my Trader for six Silvers, which was fun. I also had at least three or four turns where I had massive 6 or 7 Silver gains on overpay for Masterpiece. By the end of the game, I had exactly 24 Silvers, making my Feoda worth 8 points each. I think I had like 6 Feoda and one Province or something like that by the time I was able to end the game on piles, before my opponents could regularly start hitting $8 every turn for a Province. Man I love Feodum

Apparently, Goko is doing some apparently great repair, so won't be available for 10-15 hours. Seriously, that's a long time, it had better be worth it- not expecting it will be though.
"Great repair"? I sure hope Goko isn't saying that they're not going to let anyone log in as a result of that fix. Second time this week that's happened to me, never experienced anything like it before, not being able to log in. Man I HATE IT when this happens!!!!  ??? ??? >:( >:( >:( :'( :'( :'( :'( :-\

I'm surprised nobody put apothecary in this list. Of course it needs some support (since you're not drawing the Coppersmith all the time).
This type of strategy could work really well with Ill Gotten Gains, because A) Each time you play IGG, you can gain a Copper, putting it to immediate use, and B) Your opponent gets a Curse each time you pick an IGG up

Here's an interesting one where my opponent and I split the Minions 5-5. I think my Menageries and maybe my Forager come out in a big way though
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140226/log.50a43c25e4b0addfc4f43029.1393466025024.txt

Code: [Select]
Crossroads, Embargo, Pawn, Squire, Forager, Menagerie, Merchant Ship, Minion, Tribute, Hoard

any source of non terminal money is great for minion. pawn and squire should also be very good here in addition to forager
That would work too, but I think my Menageries helped more because with a hand of four cards after my opponent played his Minions a couple of times a turn, basically meaning that having no duplicate cards in a hand of four cards is much easier than having no duplicate cards in a hand of five cards. This makes Menagerie a sort of counter to Minion in some ways, as drawing three cards with the Menagerie is much easier with the lessened hand size, and even gets you to more cards than you would've had had he not played the Minion the previous turn

So this was an interesting game. I did a Apothecary/Ill Gotten Gains/Copper strategy with some Hunting Party/Black Market/Nomad Camp support (Hunting Party for draw, Black Market for, well you know, it's Black Market, and Nomad Camp for +Buy)

I think that that would be a really interesting area to explore, but I think that the reduced-cost Silver could get a little crazy; and what you you do with those Silver enablers in Trader and Masterpiece? Also, how do you take into account Feodum? Because the way I'm looking at it, on a Feodum board using something that makes Silver cheaper would make Feodum a lot more attractive. On the whole I like your idea, and (pardon the redundancy of my earlier statement) think it's really interesting, but there needs to be a lot of things ironed out to keep this from being too swingy or broken.

I know that Minion is not unbeatable, and I agree with most of the previous sentiments about it. It just happens to be one of my favorite cards. That's all.

Sorry if my statement might've been a little bit on the exaggerated side. I do realize that in Dominion it does depend on the board what cards are good or not, but in certain cases their are cards (like Minion) that are really, really good. I guess a Minion engine person like me might have trouble going up against Rebuild, so I guess that might be one instance where Minion might not be as good but hey, it's Dominion, it all depends on the kingdom. And yes, I may have been playing some inexperienced players, but even experienced players will probably have a hard time beating a Minion engine so whatever

Also, how do you post pictures of the Kingdom cards on Goko?

I hate Minion. It's so not fun.

I don't feel like linking right now (lazy) but drunkensailor has the code to put the images in. There is a thread somewhere...

Why do you hate Minion? It's one of the few Dominion cards that has such beautiful self-synergy. I will admit that my engine took awhile to get up and running, but once it did my 8 Minions clobbered him...

I don't mean that it's not good. I mean that it's self synergy is what makes is dull. It is it's own engine. Also the full hand discard is not so much fun. It's not amazing every game, but often it's not good because of junking attacks. It's just not fun.

EDIT: And being on the side without 8 Minions is not fun. I'd probably resign if my opponent got 8 Minions. Then again I would go for them too. I just don't like it. I don't think it should be removed. You are right that it has a great self-synergy.
Not good because of junking attacks? The discard part of Minion is what provides deck filtering, heck in some cases it might even help your opponent in a slog game; and if you have 7-10 Minions like SheCantSayNo said, there will be absolutely NOTHING your opponent can do, because basically if you're able to play all your Minions every turn, + any money you've got, you're basically guaranteed a Province every single turn. Not bad.

It's not amazing every game, but often it's not good because of junking attacks.

This is a myth. That impression probably arose because when both you and your opponent have 5 Minions in a Mountebank game your average (4-card) hand is going to suck balls, but if you ignore the Minions and let your opponent get 7-10 of them you're going to get crushed into oblivion despite the extra Curses and Coppers in his deck.
And that folks, is why I love Minion so much

I got this weird pinkish/orange card with my Guilds game that just came this afternoon and it has this link to playdominion.com/guilds on it. Is this like a promo code or something? (Sorry if this isn't really related, I just didn't want to post two new topics in a row)

Dominion Articles / Possible Combo: Plaza, Counting House
« on: February 14, 2014, 04:10:47 pm »
I just thought of a possible combo: Plaza & Counting House. You use your Plazas to discard all your Copper, and then on the last action (or if you're out of other cards, like Plaza, to play) of your turn, you play a Counting House and draw all the Coppers back.
I've never played with this strategy before, but it was just something I noticed that seemed kind of interesting. This type of strategy would be even more interesting with a source of +Buy, because all of those Coppers and extra coin tokens could be used and none of them wasted.

« on: February 12, 2014, 09:59:27 pm »
No offense was taken, by the way. I don't have Dark Ages, so I guess I just forgot that my card was pretty close to Armory. I do like your idea of changing it to "Trash a card from your hand; Gain a card costing up to $4, putting it on top of your deck." I also think that dropping it up to "gain a card costing up to $3, putting it on top of your deck" would be a good idea as well.

that's still way too strong for $4. compare it to altar, altar trashes a card and you gain a card costing up to $5. now granted, 5$ and $4 is a big difference, but still altar is $6 and it's also one of the strongest $6 in the game. changing it to 3$ would make a big difference, because all the spammable action cards are $4+

Well, not all of them. Fishing Village, Wishing Well, Scheme, and heck even Silver are at $3. That's just to name a few. But in general I think it's worth trying it this way.

well, fishing village and sheme dont do anything on their own, and wishing well is fairly weak. i mostly meant ironmonger, cavaran, tournament and advisor. cantrip actions that you want as many of as possible that boost your deck.

that said, i still don't think the card would be very intersting if you reduce $4 to $3, because it'd be too similar to hermit.
hermit is: look through your discard pile. you may trash a card from your hand or your discard pile that's not a treasure. gain card costing up to $3... well and it has the madman part, but still. that's nothing new.

Hmm, the Hermit comparison is a good call, but I think this might be sufficiently different. It can only trash cards from hand and it topdecks the gained card. On the other hand, that doesn't usually change how your turn plays out. Tough to say.
So would you recommend a change to either: "gain a card costing $3, putting it on top of your deck," or just "gain a card costing up to $4" and NOT putting it on top of your deck? Thoughts, anyone?
