What do we think of the new hero? I just had someone play Sir Finly mrrglton played against me and he says "Hello old friend! Lets me up for tea after the match!"

Hearthstone / Wispers of the Old Gods

I didn't see a thread for this.

Another new card has been announced.
Paladin card - 5mana
Summon five 1/1 silver hand recruits.

I don't see it being good unless they give new synergies with the recruits. Quartermaster is going away for standard, and that new one from TGT hasn't been that great, even in arena. It's basically Dark Wispers, but only the worse option for 1 less mana. Yeah, needs some synergy cards.

General Discussion / Electric Guitars
« on: June 26, 2015, 01:05:59 am »
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about electric guitars. I'm looking to buy one. I've just started learning on an acoustic someone lent me, and I have no idea what is a good price or model of electric to buy. I'd be playing mostly rock stuff I imagine, just regular stuff.

Speaking of signatures, I think Andrew is slowly making his way into all of ours.

That's the plan! I think you should find a real quote of mine though.

KingZog3's quote seems legit to me

It's more of a paraphrase of something he said in a dominion game to me.

General Discussion / Movies: Any movie buffs?
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:10:44 pm »
I'm pretty interested in film. I'll be starting an animation degree in september, and recently have been watching some movies an really watching the directing, colour choices and composition. After I watched Drive (amazing movie), I watched Only God Forgives, which is Nicolas Winding Refn's movie made after Drive.

EDIT: Also, if anyone else has good recommendations for movies or wants to talk about a movie in depth (or less in depth), feel free to post about those movies. Just keep things in spoilers so that people who haven't seen it can watch before reading.

I was wondering, firstly, if there are any other people here who really enjoy movies (I know people do) and are interested in things like directing, cinematography and writing in films? And secondly if anyone else has seen Only God Forgives and what did they think of it? I really enjoyed it, but I know it got mixed reviews, and some people really hated it, or really liked it. It's definitely more of an artistic film, not meant as a blockbuster.

I'll put what I thought in spoilers as not to ruin anyone who is going to watch it. And don't read it if you haven't seen it. It's meaningless if you haven't seen the movie. If you are going to watch it, just know that there is gore and violence. Drive was just over the top gore, and not too much of it. OGF is really messed up. It's not easy stuff to handle, just so you're warned.

Without question, the directing, colour choices and pacing are all great. The movie is not meant to be fast paced, and I found many of the scenes suspenseful and extremely tense. The lack of dialogue is one thing that is really interesting. Drive also had little dialogue, but this was taken to another level with OGF. So much about the main character Julian is told without words through things he does, and the "visions" he has about himself. His presumably incestual relationship with his mother, his inability to form normal connections with other people, or to have a normal sexual relationship. These are shown by the way he acts, and the way he see's himself in his visions. This is one point where I thought the movie was weak. The "visions" certain characters have are not well distinguished from the reality in the movie making it a little difficult to tell the difference at first. I'll have to watch it again sometime, since now I'm aware of what was real or not. I'll come back to this when I do. Perhaps I'll have a little more to say.

Another really strong point of the film was the music. I think it's the same writer for the music as in Drive? I'm not sure I'll have to look it up. But both Drive and OGF have great scores. The interesting thing in OGF is the Thai karaoke singing. I had to look it up, since it appears multiple times in the movie. Apparently it's an almost religious experience in Thailand, and a big part of the culture. I think if I had known that while watching it would have made more of an impact, since it's the ex-cop (God) who is singing at the karaoke bar. I'll have to watch it again with this knowledge.

The movie is pretty heavy on symbolism, the main one being hands, which there are a lots of shots of. While watching it's really hard to tell what the meaning of the hands are. My analysis is this. I think they represent the motives of the characters, in a sense. Or their ambitions. Early in the movie Julian raises his hands in a fighting pose next to the martial arts statue, believing himself a fighter, someone of strength. When he fights the ex-cop he raises his hands to fight, while the cop does not, showing both of their intentions. Julian is ready to fight, the cop has no intention of hurting him. Only after thoroughly beating Julian does the cop raise his hands, showing that now he is angry, ready to fight Julian and his mother, who has witnessed the fight. We also get shots of the same statue, showing who really the statue is representing. At the end of the movie, when Julian finds his mother dead, he puts his hand inside her stomach, presumably her womb. He feels the need to undo what he has done, to be reborn again. At the end, the cop cuts off Julian's hands, which is fulfilling his rebirth. Julian accepted losing his hands, finally finding peace with himself. There's more to this I'm sure, as there are other scenes where hands seem to be on important.

Anyway, those are mostly first impressions. I watched the movie a couple days ago, so I had some time to think about it.

Dominion General Discussion / Montreal Meet up! Well, sort of.
« on: July 14, 2014, 08:16:42 pm »
Well since there was a big post about this Chicago meet up I figured it would be nice to post that there will be a few f.ds ers meeting up in Montreal. My plan is to meet on the 23rd of July (although this hasn't been confirmed by anyone else yet) for an evening at Randolphs pub, which Markusin scoped out and it has a huge selection of board games to play. The people meeting will be KingZog3 (that's me), AndrewisFTTW+female companion (who are visiting Montreal), Markusin (who I found out lives in Montreal and so he joined this fun time), and Breezy D (who hasn't posted tons here I think, but I see him a lot on goko).

I think we will try to take a picture or two, maybe even attempt a video of the calibre of AdamH's, although maybe with fewer heads cut off. It's not a big show like it seems this Chicago thing was, but I'm sure it'll be just as fun. Or maybe it'll be weird, but I doubt it. Of course if anyone wants to come they are welcome, but this whole Chicago thing happened, Montreal is farther for most people and it's short notice. But hey, it would be cool anyway if other people showed up(fingers crossed)!

Hearthstone / Rules?
« on: June 30, 2014, 01:44:53 pm »
I'm pretty sure Blizzard needs to get their rules straight. I play a crazed Alchemist on an enemy minion which is buffed by Stormwind Champion. It's base is 3/2, SWC buffs it to 4/3, then when I play crazed Alchemist is becomes a 4/5. What? It swapped the buffed health then buffed it again with SWC. I can't believe this to be correct.

Hearthstone / Small Pack Updates
« on: June 20, 2014, 11:29:28 am »
It seems Blizzard is doing the naxrammass thing really slowly. They keep stalling by showing new cards to keep people interested, but they must be delaying. Now of course it'll be great to have an adventure mode, but I think they would benefit from having small updates of just a couple cards every now and then. Like just release 3 cards or something, because I feel if they stick to just massive updates people may start playing other things, especially since there don't seem to be that many deck possibilities right now.

EDIT: And I don't mean release 3 of the naxrammass cards. I mean in later updates, they just give 3 new cards while they work on new adventures.

Goko Dominion Online / Strange chat behaviour
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:20:43 pm »
So I'm playing this game with some random guy, and I get into this situation.

I have a deck of roughly 20+cards, 2 of my 3 bishops collide and miss the shuffle, I trash a Rats to Bishop and then draw my 3rd Bishop. I thought it was unusual and a bit unlucky. I mentioned it in the chat, not complaining, just saying that it happened. And my opponent just couldn't understand why I bothered to say it. He said it wasn't interesting (I said that I mentioned it because it's unusual and interesting) and that if I always mention when I'm unlucky that people will think I'm a crybaby (his word). I told him I'm not complaining, merely stating that it happened, the same way I mentioned that in one game in a 50+card deck my 4 woodcutters came up in 1 hand. It's a fact and it's unusual so I mention it in the chat. It's conversation and since it's dominion related I thought maybe a dominion player might find it funny or something. Kind of ironically he inquired about the Ace of Spades in the "show more cards" button. What, am I supposed to find his comments interesting, but shut up about mine? I wasn't rude, I replied to his question explaining it's presence.

Is it really that unusual to chat to your opponent, or mention when something unlucky happens? I don't blame losses on luck. I would equally mention when my deck works out perfectly.

Game Reports / HoP mini mega turns

This game was interesting. Its a HoP mega turn, but the presence of both Madman and Graverobber and the buying power of Grand Market allowed for mini mega turns, and also to use up Madmen, gain the Hermits back, still gain things with HoP and then gain more madmen from the hermits you played.

I won, but was it because my opponent made a mistake by breaking PPR in the end when I still had a madman in my deck? Or did he just not build enough? I had more Grand Markets in the end.

I go BM+Venture with Hermit to gain Silver. He goes... Sage Pirate Ship? I think he forgot how hard Sage's choke on VP cards. I also badly had to trash my first Hermit, so I gained way less Silver than I should have. I know my strategy was better, but I'll ask everyone here anyway. Is my strategy better? Is this another nail in PS's coffin? My opponent's goko rating was roughly 5600 I think. I don't know what is iso rating is.

Ok, so I'm posting this not to debate strategy so much as to debate the use of Forager. My strategy is clearly bad (Fools gold+Adventurer). But AndrewisFTTW claimed that his forger strategy (pumping them up to $6) is worth it, even if it had been a mirror. I disagreed, saying it's too costly to buy expensive cards just to trash. in a mirror I would have been able to use his work and profit more than him. I want people here to agree with me, and disagree with FTTW (boost my ego please).

Rules Questions / Market Square+ on trash
« on: March 21, 2014, 12:09:06 pm »
I'm sure this is in the Dark ages rulebook, but am I allowed to discard Market Square to trashing Cultist if I drew it with Cultist's on trash effect? Is this a case of what I choose to do first? I chose to the the on trash first, then chose the market Square which is now in my hand.

Goko Dominion Online / I'm two people
« on: February 27, 2014, 11:30:19 pm »
I'm not WanderingWinder. But I am two people. That is, my account is shared. This came up when AdrewisFTTS messaged me about a game I played against him. Except it was my brother.

Usually he plays casual games and I play ranked games (he likes to make his own kingdoms), but I guess he wanted to play a few ranked matches. We're about equal strength, so it's not like he ruins the rating, but in case you're wondering why I'm not so friendly sometimes, it's because it may not be me playing the game.

Game Reports / A true money engine

This was a nice engine out of only treasure cards. I only buy 2 actions cards, both of which weren't needed. The market square open didn't help at all and I would have done much better had I got a Silver instead

He open Bishop, as many people so, because VP chips are just sooo strong. They are, and I think a Market Square/Bishop thing with Hunting Party could have been stronger. Still a very fun engine to play, especially because I was totally uncontested on the engine parts.

I don't remember if it's in that bad manners thread, but I think resigning in the middle of your opponents last turn is bad manners, no matter how bad you're losing. I already had pretty much the whole Platinum pile and a solid point lead, so she could have resigned at any point before. Instead she opted to gg me mid turn (That's not the bad manners part), covering my cards, and force end my final turn. Have the decency to wait 5 seconds. I'm not going to rub it in your face by Bishoping my Colony, because I'm not an ass (I thought of it, but I wouldn't do it. I save that for IRL against my brother.)

Ironworks is a must buy, and I'm not sure why my opponent didn't open with it. Basically Throne Room makes everything possible. Masquerade is not a problem because I can safely load up on Pearl Divers to pass over just in case. Besides I can just gain everything right back. It was close, but I squeezed those last 2 Estates for the win. Not sure why my opponent ended it, but I don't think he could have caught up. I would have gotten that last Province on my next turn anyway.
