General Discussion / Spectral Souls/Blazing Souls
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:34:03 pm »
Anyone played these games, either on their original platform or their recent port to Android (maybe IOS too)?  They're fairly similar to Final Fantasy Tactics in play style, and are overall really involved with lots of character building.  They're also designed for multiple playthroughs.  I "finished" Spectral Souls (in the sense that I beat the last post-game dungeon.. you can keep building your characters up, though) and have gone through the true ending of Blazing Souls

Goko Dominion Online / Do Goko bots learn?
« on: October 26, 2013, 03:59:30 pm »
So this may just be an artifact of selective observation, but it seems like the Goko bots are getting better at Dominion (compared to when Goko first opened, say).  Is their code fine-tuned regularly, or do they have some kind of adaptive artificial intelligence where they get better the more games they play?  Or am I just imagining things?

Or is it just that some (higher ranked?) bots are better than others?

Rules Questions / Would gain
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:56:46 am »
So I was trying to come up with a (bad) card idea that would interrupt the process of trying to gain a card when a player cannot (like, the pile is empty).  I tried the wording "when another player would gain a card," but someone pointed out that the condition wouldn't be satisfied in the case when they're supposed to gain, say, a Curse when the Curse pile is empty.  I guess I can believe that, but what is the actual process of gaining a card?  Is there a "trying to gain" step?

Dominion General Discussion / Saboteur
« on: July 15, 2013, 05:00:20 pm »
So Saboteur is usually regarded as a pretty bad card, but I'm wondering about some potential use cases for it.  It seems like it could have some use if you're just slightly behind in a mirror game.  Say, for instance, you're both going for Minions and you lost the split 4-6 or split it 5-5 but are a turn behind.  If you pick up a Saboteur with a $5 or $6 hand, you'd see it again fairly quickly with all the reshuffling.  You may have to choose between Minion for reshuffling and playing Saboteur at some point, but at least if they conflict you can still get $2.  In this situation you're probably less likely to hit gold or silver, and you could hit your opponents Minions, which could turn the advantage towards you.  Or you could hit one of their Provinces or Duchies, giving you the edge if the match is otherwise mirrored.

You could have spent that $5 to get a Duchy, but if it's still somewhat early and you're reshuffling a lot, the Saboteur might pay off more than 3VP worth.

It seems like when most people talk about Saboteur they talk about it in the context of building a strategic deck around it and then argue that it falls short compared to all the other $5 cards.  Maybe it's better thought of as an audible-type buy to change the dynamics of a particular match.

Thoughts?  Or other cases where people have seen it used well?
