jomini got the answer i was thinking of (though in general I think that gaining a curse and a Gold is not good so you don't need that whole setup).

Morgrim, what would you do if they had moat, just not play witch? Edit: I guess if you didn't want to trigger a reshuffle it would be better to not play witch.

Young Nick: In most situations the witch would come first.

Jester, Thief or Ambassador on Ill-Gotten gains sends out 3*3 curses; 10 Embargo Tokens are on the curse pile, and you buy one

Here's a stricter criterion (though general solutions are still welcome):
What if you knew for sure that they had a moat?

You have Militia and Witch in hand, and two actions left. Usually you would want to play Witch first, since you don't want to draw anything dead. When would it be better to play Militia first?

Duration: On your next turn, you may gain 1 VP token. This is better when there's Possession. Not a full solution, but strictly better or equal.

Virus Vial
Typeless
$5
When you gain this card other than in the buy phase, you must gain 5 curses.
with Ambassador, this is better to buy.

At least it's not Scheme/Alchemist. Those are really annoying.

Knave of All Trades
$7P
Action-Attack
Each other player reveals cards from their deck until they reveal a card costing $3 or more. They trash that card and choose a card in the supply costing at most $2 less than it. They gain a card of your choice with the same cost.
Each other player gains a curse, putting it on top of their deck.
Each other player discards down to three cards in hand.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Would you pay $6 for this card?
« on: March 08, 2012, 08:27:39 pm »
I like it (the original) at $6, though I think it would be rather situational. In some games I think it would end up being an expensive Lab, in others, people would try chaining it with Smithies, which I feel is not as good as BV/Smithy (BV/Smithy is not that good either, yes?). In other words I think it would only shine facilitating some really complex engine.

Here's a justification for Duchess: She helps survey your territory to make things efficient, but she's not too discreet about state secrets so your opponents benefit too.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is there a card you always buy?

I always buy Fishing Village, then sometimes realize there's no a single nonterminal in the kingdom.
I've gotten screwed many times trying to pursue Apothecary strategies. I just love that card for some reason.

Variants and Fan Cards / Card renames/nicknames
« on: March 03, 2012, 11:28:21 pm »
Dominion, like many games, is quite thematic. For the most part, the names accurately reflect the function:
Villages gives +actions, implying that you need people to carry out orders
Conspirator makes sense, you need a lot of them to be useful.
Etc.
As pointed out before, Minion and Pawn aren't too good for names. It's hard to see how they line up with the function.
JoaT makes sense in that it does a little of everything, but as the recent DS article points out, chances are you go doublejack (or some other simplistic BM-type strategy) or skip it entirely. Maybe it should be called Master at One?

What nicknames would you give to the cards (perhaps some derisive ones for Familiar)?
Or, if you were given a whole set and decided to base it around a different theme, what would it be?

edit: Ah, what a coincidence, somebody recently posted a retheme.

blueblimp, your easy mode solution doesn't work since the fairgrounds are devalued by bridge.

edit: That's a clever fix.

Hard Mode: 36 VP:
Hand is NV, TR, KC, Bridge, WS.
KC->TR Bridge x2
WS gain two Fairgrounds
NV put two Fairgrounds on NV mat.
NV Mat also has one of each card, including black market's 25 cards.

edit: Oh, unless only VP tokens count.

That Transmute seems way overpowered for $0P.

Really? It seems to have the sorcerer's apprentice effect of filling the deck with transmutes that become progressively less useful. I think it's interesting.
Incidentally, apprentice would help with that transmute.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Most Possible Money in One Turn
« on: March 01, 2012, 04:32:18 am »
You'd be playing all 10 pirate ships, so it would be $30 per treasure. I imagine the best solution would involve both Pirate Ship and Bank, where you draw as many treasures as you can with Crossroads (maybe use TR) and the rest (like silvers) you'd have to feed to the Pirate Ships.

What about KC Coppersmith ->$31 valued copper:
BM->Play all coppers, HoP->Mandarin
Chancellor, Counting House
x10 (perhaps this makes it a little hard to not end on piles, so maybe only x9?)
Play all Coppers in normal buy phase

60 coppers *11 *31=$20460

edit: 60 coppers, sorry.

Has anyone had much experience with Tournament/Duke? I tried it recently (got most of the prizes, don't know if I should have gotten Duchies sooner) and got killed.

Isotropic vs official is rather arbitrary, since officially there are supposed to be infinite base treasures.
No, officially there are supposed to be whatever finite number you agree on before the game starts.

So essentially an unbounded number, which would make the puzzle rather uninteresting.

I think it's called Inception Leo, though memegenerator isn't loading that page.

Opening definitely has to be Potion/Swindler (5/2 is not good, I'd probably go potion/-); what other terminal would you use? Swapping their Potion for Tourney in the beginning would be gg, if you're lucky.
Venture/Tunnel isn't that efficient imo. Tourney prizes I don't think are that useful here, though it's good for the money, since all those curses and familiars mean province blocking is less likely. I guess I'd prefer Stone over Scrying Pool.
