Innovation Game Reports / "Rainbow" achievements?
« on: February 26, 2015, 09:31:34 am »
A few days ago I played a game where I managed to achieve a card from each of the three expansions, as well as some standard achievements. I also took two Decrees so I had six different colors in my achievements at the end of the game. It would be really cool if someone ever got all five Decrees plus a single achievement from each expansion. In a nine-achievement game, you could have each achievement be a different color! Anyhow I was wondering if anyone had ever gotten more than 6 colors in their achievements. I will post the log to my game when I get the chance.

Innovation Game Reports / The most undeserved win ever?
« on: December 10, 2014, 10:05:47 am »
http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201412/09/game-20141209-132207-a5214da5.html

This game was played to 10 achievements (all expansions + 1 extra) and I was getting slaughtered. The opponent had 9 achievements and could have gotten a 10th in no time. On my final turn I melded Thermometer from my forecast and activated it shared, just to see what would happen. Somehow it chained my opponent's yellow card from a 7 to an 11! The game ended on points but the bonus I melded with Thermometer had put me ahead 38-37, giving me the luckiest and least-deserved win I remember getting.

Innovation Game Reports / Turn 8 combo win

Even after the devastation wreaked by a Tigernmas War, one man emerged from the rubble, wearing a toga and holding . . . a clock!

That was the first time I was lucky enough to pull off that particular combo.

I finally reached my goal of getting high enough on the leaderboard (#21) that I could see my name on my small monitor display immediately upon loading the leaderboard, without having to scroll down! Stupid, I know, but I am extremely excited about it.

Not sure if it's me, has anyone else noticed Isotropic is down?

Innovation Rules Questions / Does Ximen Bao give you History?
« on: August 27, 2014, 03:07:06 pm »
Hey - I was just curious about this, and I don't think I've seen it in a game on Isotropic. Does the figure Ximen Bao, whose Karma has all echo effects on your board count as part of a single color's stack, give you the History achievement if you have at least 4 echoes somewhere on your board?
thanks!

Innovation General Discussion / Champlain: interaction or bug?
« on: May 14, 2014, 12:10:02 pm »
http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201405/14/game-20140514-081614-32d40d7e.html

This occurred on my opponent Lacyon's turn 14. He shared some dogmas, causing me to draw a 5th card into my hand, an age 7, when I had Champlain on the board and achievements were still available. It did not trigger Champlain's karma. However, the next turn, I melded a card and drew a 5th card again, also an age 7, and this time it did trigger the karma. Was that supposed to happen?

I am curious what time zones the (few) people that post on this board are in, and when you all play. Sometimes I log in and see no one, sometimes >10 people. I am on Eastern Standard Time (USA) and occasionally log in at maybe 8-9 PM. I wish Iso were a little more active so that I could more reliably get a game at off-peak hours. So when are people usually on?

Game Reports / Scrying Pool trashing tempo
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:10:45 am »
Had a game last night with Scrying Pool where I opened Potion/Storeroom versus opponent's Potion/Silver. This effectively crippled my ability to get to $5 quickly and pick up a Count for trashing, but I wanted the +buy to get Pawns and the better cycling to see more Potions. The opponent got a Count quickly, trashed most of the Coppers and Estates, and went ahead 3-0 in Provinces. I got the Count a bit later and was able to trash everything on two separate turns, then caught up with two double-Province turns using Storeroom and Count, ending the game on T16. So my question is whether I made the right tempo decision to keep things moving slow at first and let the Scrying Pools take over, or whether it was just luck.

Goko Dominion Online / Opinions on the VP counter?
« on: April 11, 2014, 08:13:06 am »
I searched but could not easily find a thread on this, sorry if it's duplicated.

I was curious how many high-level players play with the VP counter. I personally dislike it because I think part of the fun of Dominion is following along in your head. Having the vp counter rewards people who aren't paying close attention to what's been bought or mentally tracking the flow of the game. Those real-life moments when your opponent's hand is hovering over the last Province and you are secretly praying they'll buy it and lost are part of what makes the game fun. I have played in Scrabble tournaments in the past, and part of being a good player is being able to balance thinking about what to play while also tracking the tiles in the bag in your allotted time (on pen and paper). I think the VP counter makes the online game fundamentally different from the real-life game, and in my opinion that isn't a good thing.

So I use vpoff. What do other people think about the VP counter and its impact on the online game?

Innovation General Discussion / Making the jump to figures/cities?
« on: April 07, 2014, 01:00:21 pm »
(Dunno if anyone still posts here but I will give it a shot anyway.)
I've been playing innovation for about half a year now. . . I have the real-life cards for the base set and Echoes, and that's all I've played on Isotropic as well, where I've worked myself up to between level 15-20. I haven't trusted myself to start any games with Figures or Cities, not wanting to put the effort into learning so many new cards.

I was curious what people's opinion is on:
(1) how much additional effort it takes to play a game with figures and/or cities given the added complexity
(2) whether either of them make the game more fun
(3) whether the dominant strategies change radically, like how adding Echoes tends to change the strategy from a scoring-heavy blitz in base-only to more of a long game focusing on splaying and building giant stacks.

Anyway, if anyone still posts here I'd love to hear people's opinions, just curious before I take the plunge and get slaughtered for my first several dozen Figures games!

Game Reports / Lost GM split 7-3 but eked out win with Farmland
« on: March 11, 2014, 01:46:57 pm »

Fortune Teller, Hermit, Masquerade, Sage, Tunnel, Advisor, Herald, Island, Farmland, Grand Market
I must admit I was pretty happy I could pull out a win here. I think Herald-Masquerade is a decent opening but maybe I should have bought a Silver instead of Herald to try to get more GMs earlier in the game. I think my opponent was fairly lucky to pick up 7 GMs by turn 12 especially without heavy trashing but I was able to use Farmland in textbook style, gaining a Herald on the first Farmland buy, then a Grand Market, then two Provinces on the final $12 turn.

So was it just luck or did I play this one correctly?

Introductions / Hi from Tennessee
« on: December 06, 2013, 11:17:49 am »
Hey I'm Q and have been lurking on this forum for a while, only recently started to make a few posts. I am a grad student in ecology at the University of Tennessee. I started to play Dominion in real life maybe a year and a half ago and have been feeding myself on a steady diet of Isotropic followed by Goko for a little over a year now. Sometimes when I waste several hours on this game I silently curse my housemate for telling me about the existence of online Dominion... but heck it's fun! I don't often play in real life now, but my sister and her fiance built themselves one of those fancy wooden boxes for all the Dominion sets, so I definitely do when I am over at their place. It took me a while to figure this game out but now I would say I am fairly decent, hovering between levels 32-34 on Isotropish (5300-5700 on Goko). Thanks for all the intelligent analysis on this forum, it has really helped me with my game!
