Dominion Articles / Re: Gear
« on: August 18, 2018, 08:42:23 pm »
I immediately thought of the comparison to Haven, rather than Moat.  How does it compare to that - what makes Gear so much more powerful despite Haven being a cantrip?

I think the distinction is easier.  You have an obligation to not affirmatively mislead others, but you do not have an obligation to affirmatively inform others of information you know that they would also want to know.

So:

* Counting piles silently in your head and not providing the count is fine, but if asked, responding truthfully with the count is required
* Playing quickly with the intent of concealing your actions is not fine, but you do not have to announce your updated score when you buy a Province

Outhouse:

Take an extra turn after this one, and you only draw 3 cards for your next hand.

While this is in play, when another player plays an Attack card, it doesn't affect you.

I'm not disallowing anything.  jsh's "article" was closed because it was in the wrong section.  This one was not because it doesn't break any rules.

Did I miss some new forum rule by which only nonsense threads may be started from now on?

I wouldn't mind if they were at least funny.  These are hardly distinguishable from actual bad content.  But at least this one is not in Articles.

Sirlin is a terrible person.  And sure, judge the person not his works, but his games are non grata because the reason he is a terrible person is because of his terrible actions involving his games.  If Hannibal Lecter's board game existed solely because of his cannibalism, I wouldn't play it even if it was the most finely-designed deckbuilder of all time, because I would be encouraging and subsidizing terrible behavior.

But they also happen to be terrible games, though, which makes it all much easier.  They fall into that particularly pernicious modern cluster of games designed by people who are excellent at marketing but not excellent at design.  See, e.g., Secret Hitler.

Incidentally I had never played a Zelda game previously, and loved BotW.  I love Kakariko Village.  I would totally live there.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Right way to play when you can’t win?
« on: January 29, 2018, 11:12:11 am »
There's no good answer to this question, in large part because there's often a difference between playing for first and playing for second.  The best thing you can do is play in a way that other players at least can reasonably anticipate.  If you buy the last Province and end the game, even though you couldn't win and the next player in turn order could have won with that Province, that's not your fault.  But you shouldn't be doing things like passing a Platinum through Masquerade to end the game faster.

Dominion Articles / Re: Underrated Cards in 2018
« on: January 25, 2018, 11:41:37 pm »
I forget who it was, but there was definitely an old-school player who said that Bishop open was usually wrong, and it was better to pick it up a few turns after the opening. I still think that's correct.

Bishop is only kind of for the trashing. You really want it more for the VP. It turns out VP chips are still really good. I don't know if I'd say it's underrated though.
I remember very vividly getting beat down by DG's King's Court-Pawn deck on a board with no other trashing, because I was foolish enough to open Bishop to let him slim into his engine.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How thematic are card names?
« on: January 24, 2018, 05:14:37 pm »
Torturer is surely the most thematically appropriate Dominion card, for the simple reason that it genuinely evokes that theme within the player itself and not just his deck :)

It's not clear from your post whether you got an undo on your own misclick.

If you did not ask for an undo, or if you asked for an undo and was not granted one, then I think your move wasn't unsporting at all.  It wasn't sporting, but it also isn't unsporting.  It's just baseline expected behavior.

If you did get an undo, then I think your move is slightly unsporting.  But I wouldn't consider it egregiously out of line.  One never has an obligation to agree to an undo, except maybe if the opponent had granted one to you.

The respect system is going nowhere.  The whole point of it is supposed to be a way to silently express approval or lack thereof.  Indeed I would have thought it would have solved the problem people had in this thread.

Imagine this thread ends after post #17.  Would that be the kind of thread we want, or don't want, on this forum?

Chris, I wouldn't agree with the sentiment that a 0 upvote un-responded post signals acceptance.  I think you should give readers some credit.  As someone who doesn't closely follow the forum it was pretty clear to me that the Loan fork of the thread was both an irrelevant nitpick and also not particularly well-received.

Awaclus, it also seems clear that your Loan opinion has both been made clear and also not accepted by the majority.  So continuing to make it in a thread that obviously was never about Loan doesn't really do anything as far as making your opinion more accepted.

That being said, it seems pretty clear to me that this particular debate is best served by a titanic grudge match under mutually-agreed-upon parameters, with the stakes being either a temp ban, or agreeing to add to every post "I was wrong about Loan" for a week.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: A user report feature?
« on: January 06, 2018, 05:56:56 pm »
I looked over this case (user was reported to me). While the "play faster" guy is indeed being a jerk, he isn't actually breaking any rules. I can't justify banning him. However, situations like this are what the blacklist feature is for (on both sides). If you don't want to encounter him again, just blacklist him. Irrelevant if he blacklisted you already, of course.

Wait, do you work for Shuffle IT now? Or you're a moderator/admin or something?
He volunteers in this banning-people capacity.

Dispensing vigilante justice in your free time is basically the American dream, after all.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Tom Vasel Nocturne Review
« on: December 14, 2017, 06:10:59 pm »
I just watched Vasel's review of Nocturne.  Although I do agree with some of what he says, mostly I just got a kick out of it.  It was funny, because it was pretty obvious that he doesn't really know what he's talking about when it comes to dominion.

I watch his reviews for lots of games I am interested in, but this makes me wonder how well he explains them.  He described ghost saying "you can look through your deck and set aside an action card".  He neglected to mention the part that is actually good about ghost.  He also just said a lot of things wrong.
