Dominion General Discussion / Re: What is your favorite Promo card?
« on: July 03, 2014, 04:54:49 pm »
Wouldn't it work if you just put it below a horizontal line? like so

Quote
+1 Card
+2 Actions
----
At the start of Clean-up, if you have any number of unused Actions, you may put up to that many Walled Villages from play on top of your deck. (Actions, not Action cards)"

if it's below a line, it means that it's just a general rule for games using this, right? Embargo says "When a player buys a card, he gains a curse per embargo token on that pile", and that also happens just once, not once per embargo. or am i missing something?
The line means "these things happen at different times." Your text, by not limiting its scope to Walled Village being in play or some such, is just a general game rule, not even requiring that card to be used that game (except then it does nothing, phew). These days I think Embargo isn't clear enough, and I would probably say "In games using this" for clarity. But yes that would be a way to have the ability not happen multiple times.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: So... Prince on BGG, when?
« on: July 03, 2014, 04:49:17 pm »
Just wondering, because I'd like to order it as soon as possible.
When you go on BGG, if you immediately see an ad for Prince, then they've got it. That is how I will find out.

Is

"At the start of Clean-up, if you have any number of unused Actions, you may put up to that many Walled Villages from play on top of your deck. (Actions, not Action cards)"

any clearer?
That would happen once per Walled Village; they would all say it, so they would all do it. So one unused Action would get them all back. You would need more text to make sure it only happened once.

They have not implemented the proposed slightly more exciting adventures yet, but they did change the starting hands to 7 Coppers 3 Estates (except Dark Ages where you get both Shelters and Estates and well no doubt they will fix that).

is there any reason why you didn't make it like that? is it a matter of simplicity over functionality? how would you make it now?
Well we didn't like the card much so it left Guilds, early on. Then I needed a promo that would seem appropriate for a Carcassonne tie-in. The name Walled Village (then on Fortress) sounded good and it seemed okay for this outtake.

There was never a point where I was trying to fix it up. I don't remember how much time I had when it turned out I needed the promo, but I sure didn't work on the card. And it was an outtake because it was boring and so there it is, still boring.

The unused Actions version seems too confusing to let loose on the world; the choose one version is fine but not exciting. I think I'd do Plaza instead, and figure that Plaza plus whatever fraction of Herald was enough villages for a small set.

When you discard this from play, if you then have more unused Actions than you have Walled Villages in play (Actions, not Action cards), you may put this on top of your deck.

Counting the Walled Villages given that one was just discarded is confusing but I at least addressed it. There's also

+1 Card
+1 Action
Choose one: +1 Action; or when you discard this from play this turn, you may put it on top of your deck.

which is different all the ways that it's different.

Will we no longer have automatch? Will we no longer have a way to stack cards? Will we no longer have a log we can see at all times without to click a button to read it? Will we no longer have a prettified log that is easy to read and sorts everything by color? What about the VP counter? Will that be gone too? I'm not 100% sure I would trade stability for all of these features. Also, we now have chat on the side. We get a little ding when someone joins our games. We have a black list. We have a kingdom generator.
The intention last I heard is to replace the lobbies with something close to the automatching plan I outlined here somewhere a few months ago. The plan includes some kingdom generation and a black list.

I okay'd a VP counter; I don't know if/when on that or always-visible log/chat.

I am Donald X.

Proof?
At BGG you can get a microbadge that says you don't think I exist. Or one that says you think I do; they don't play favorites (they're too busy with the cult of the new).

Gaining a Duchess when buying a Duchy.
I always picture it like the old joke where the model is standing next to the car. "Do you come with the Duchy?" Yes, yes she does.

I am Donald X. and I upvoted that post.

I know upvotes can be hard to notice, but I started replying to the post, going into more depth on lose track, and well as Jack Handey put it,

The other day I got out my can opener and was opening a can of worms when I thought, "What am I doing?"

Wasn't the chaos theory butterfly effect named after the Bradbury story?
Not according to my internet.

Can you tell us anything about Temporum?
I'm glad you asked. Because it means something must have been announced somewhere. I see, it's in a Dice Tower interview.

Well he does not appear to have said much about it. It's time-travel-themed; I made it; we expect it at GenCon. He mentions a "butterfly effect" card; that's Step on a Butterfly. It's a Ray Bradbury thing, not a chaos theory thing. I mean they're similar but well this butterfly is being stepped on, not flapping its wings and causing hurricanes. Anyway the game has at least one card, and with a cool name too.

It's a strategy game; it has the Donald X. Variety Mechanic. I reported those things previously but I can mention them again. I expect people who like my games to like it. The art is fantastic.

Awful: Prince (duh!), Tactician (>$4), duration cards, Island, a knight (unless you got it from the Black Market deck instead of a knights pile), Feast/Deathcart/other self-trashing cards other than Hermit
Bad because really dangerous: Remake, Rats
Pretty bad because dangerous: Bishop & other forced trashing cards
Might be bad due to forced play of actions: Throne Room
Suboptimal: Shanty Town, Menagerie, Treasury(>$4)/Walled Village, Fortress, Watchtower/Library/JoaT (unless there's a discard attack)
Good: everything else -- Monument, Smithy, Militia, Scheme, etc.
Awesome: Prizes
If you draw Prince with only one possible "suboptimal" target, odds are you want to Prince that card. A minor bonus blows up. Prince of Pearl Divers, that's an extra card and action every turn - it's like starting every turn by playing a Lab and a Village (and hey you get to do the Pearl Diver thing). So I mean. Prince of Fortresses? Go for it. Prince of Watchtowers, that's not what you wanted, but drawing an extra card every turn is a lot better than waiting to draw Prince again and see if you are luckier next time. Okay Prince of Jacks is not good except under attacks, but Prince of Menageries, that's pretty sweet. Prince of Treasuries has no issues when it's possible, you don't get to put it on your deck and hey do not wish to either.

For that matter, one-shots are bad since they don't work, but if you draw Prince with Death Cart and no other targets, man, Prince the Death Cart and hope you keep drawing actions to feed it. When it's not worth it, let it go. You only need it for a few turns to make out.

Forced trashing is sometimes bad, but not Bishop, that's a deck, the Prince of Bishops is making you VP every turn.

Prince of Thrones will usually be great, but obv. you might have a deck where it was too scary. It's not a question of if you'll draw that Remake; it's when, and what with. Well, the game could end before you draw it.

The problem with Prince of Ruined Libraries is that your deck probably has more Ruins and so that extra card is not so hot. I might pass there. Prince of Abandoned Mines I would at least consider, how big is my deck anyway, maybe big enough that I should just live with this.

Sea Hag is a poor target if the Curses are low, and since you have a Sea Hag, they probably are.

Bridge requires 4 players.

Village Idiot of course died because in multiples it locks you out of the game.
It could have a safety clause like Pillage and not affect players with already small hand, what was the reason against this?
I didn't have that technology until after Village Idiot's day, and there was no particular reason to revive Village Idiot once I had it.

Few things are more educational than a carefully crafted caricature; few things more tiresome than an exhaustive list of exceptions. I like to compose the former, and trust that every bore will be able to compile the latter for himself, in his own basement, on his own clock.
The problem is just that we're on the internet. It's sad to ruin a perfect way to explain something by having to add "except for all of the exceptions." Noticing that the thing isn't always true isn't just what people on f.ds do though, it's the whole internet. In the end you can make the overall discussion better by adding "except for all of the exceptions" even if your post itself is less pretty.

Except when you can't.

Also I bet your username contributes way more to how your posts are received stylistically than your lack of exception-accepting.

I believe with five or more players in a game, the three-pile rule changes to four piles, no?
It does.

This has probably been answered, but I couldn't find it while looking around in the outtakes or using the search feature: It was said some time ago, Festival/Library once had a third part to go with it. What was that card, and what became of it (was it scrapped, did it get released in a later expansion and if so, how different did it end up)?
It was Village Idiot - cost $3, "+2 Actions, Each other player discards a card." I moved Festival, Library, and Village Idiot from the large version of Alchemy to the main set, in a group (and at some other point I moved Gardens). Festival and Village Idiot both give you extra actions without a card, and so are good with Library. That was really what tied them together.

Village Idiot of course died because in multiples it locks you out of the game.

Personally I don't feel like I could make a post in the serious thread that couldn't be read as sarcastic or otherwise actually joking, no matter how much I meant what I was saying. If I started out explaining that, no really, I was very serious, that would just seem like set-up. It's like when Michael Richards went on Letterman with Seinfeld to apologize about using hate speech on a bad night for his stand-up act, and the audience kept laughing. Look at Kramer! Apologizing!

In my experience, no-joking threads are a bad sign at forums. Just have ignore lists and then people can block hilarious people if they feel the need. Or I mean, it is not hard to just skip over one-liners; are you wearing your fingers out on the scroll wheel?

I do like threads for replying to threads that you can't reply in though. Or ones you can, that's good to. Why I didn't make a new thread for replying to this thread is a mystery.

Logistical/printing issues aside, did you think about using a mat like Native Village?  So...
If it had been in an expansion, I would have looked at how a mat could work, if it would be better. It wasn't so it was never going to have one. At the start I had to decide, can I do this with no mat; I decided that I could, and that was that.

Yep. So the situation is really, Prince on Band works one way because it does what the cards say, and Throne on Band as Feast works a different way because it does something different than what the cards say, because of this special-case ruling.
Throne/Band/Feast works the way it does because no-one having that experience was ever going to figure out that Band did nothing the second time. It was counterintuitive minus zero / no limit, and did not come up in time to put an answer in the FAQ. Prince does not have the same issue, it never tries to play Band from the trash.

Would it be possible to have a sort of Outtakes expansion?  That is, have it contain all the promos, and some other cards you tinkered with that fit into main sets?  Not necessarily the "Treasure Chest" wet dream of so many on here that would require essentially the rules of every expansion, but just cards that didn't get in mainly due to space and time.  I'm curious mainly because the Promos available for individual sale are each the cost of a small expansion, which is kind of ridiculous.
I don't know where you are looking at prices for the promos; I just checked Black Market at BGG and it's $2.50.

The cards that weren't worth putting into expansions mostly aren't worth having. Getting good cards out of them requires as much additional work as just making new cards.

SCSN has it right. If Prince fails to set the card aside that turn, Prince is done doing things to the card. I see that this is not clear on the card - it could say "when you discard it from play that turn." The parenthetical is trying to get that in.

Sorry for nitpicking, but is this a ruling or you are claiming the actual text on the card implies this? If its the latter, I still don't see it. And Ironworks/Trader has made a nitpicker out of me.
I see that this is not clear on the card.

(Anyhow, I see Donald X has answered the question at the root of this. Though I still don't really understand why Throne Room and Prince work differently in this respect.)

With Prince, the BoM is entering play, leaving play, and entering play again, as part of resolving Prince multiple times. When BoM enters play the second time, its text instructs you to pick a card for it to imitate.

With Throne Room, the BoM enters play, leaves play, and then is played again, but does not enter play again;

But, as I say above, Band of Misfits tells you what happens when you "play this", not when it "enters play".
Band of Misfits reverts to being a Band of Misfits when it leaves play, which happens when you set it aside (the set aside area is not "in play").
