My cat isn't much of a Ratcatcher. She doesn't come when she's called.

Gentle Intro game tonight. Gentle was not the word I'd use with Giant in 5player game. Mine got trashed before I got the big bonus from it, and while the others were getting Hirelings and Treasure Troves, I was barely scraping together a second. Oh and Port is a funny word. Port, port, port. After enough jokes, dear husband went to the wine cabinet to serve everyone a glass of ... Port. 12 villages is nice with so many players, but enough went bye, bye, thanks to Giant, that there were terminal issues.

People were a bit tired though so we ended on three piles (and had cleaned up before remembering the game should have gone to four). The winner had 2 provinces. I, the loser, had 4 curses - and a Distant Land I hadn't had the chance to play.

The cards are cool, the new mechanics are cool, the event (Scouting Party) was barely used. I bought it once, just to try it out. Another bought it because she had $11 and no +buy elsewhere. Maybe if I was better at tracking my deck, it might be more useful, but I'd rather spend $3 on another Dungeon, thankyou, or $2 on another Catratcher (sorry.. another injoke. Ratcatcher.).

That should cost 5, treasures strictly better than Silver should not cost 3/4$ so you would basically ignore Silver until they run out. Still, that Treasure is a Gold for 5$ when there are no attacks in the kingdom anyway or they are weak and you can ignore them. I see that card being a thing at 5$ either a Gold or a Copper and maybe being an attack itself (a Spy/Fortune Teller variant maybe?) and giving 3$ when you don't have an attack other than itself in play.

Thanks for the feedback. Like the spy/fortuneteller idea - it fits the theme.

Confession - treasure-attack
$5
Each other player reveals the top three cards of their deck, discarding any revealed actions, and putting the rest back on their deck in any order.
If you have no other attack cards in play, 3$
Else 1$

It's kind of an anti-venture, in that getting several is NOT a good idea! :D

Or maybe
Confession - treasure-action-attack-reserve (!)
4$
Each other player reveals the top three cards of their deck, discarding any revealed actions, and putting the rest back on their deck in any order.
Place this on your tavernmat
----
If you have no attack cards in play, you may call this during your buy phase for 3$

Since it does not self-synergize and is slower, I'm thinking 4-cost might be ok.

When another player plays an attack you may set this aside. If you do, the attacker discards a silver or reveals a hand without silvers.
On your next turn, return this card to your hand.
Theme: paying for their sins. I fear this to scale poorly or be too political with several players though..

You could just return it to your hand at the end of the current (i.e. the attacker's) turn. Then it wouldn't be political, since you'd reveal it for everyone. It'd still be a bit worse for the first guy to play an Attack though, because he doesn't know that you have it, but then everyone else does, but that doesn't sound like it'd be too much of a problem.

I'm more thinking about the problem of several people choosing whether or not to reveal confessions to the same attack. The attacker may need a silverless hand/deck to even dare to play an attack. Tried to mitigate it by confession itself being a terminal silver.

I guess it's one of those things that everyone thinks should be a great idea, but is repeatedly shown not to be..

How about this instead;
Confession - treasure
Cost 4/5ish?
If you did not play any attacks this turn, 3$
Else 2$

I don't have all ready yet, and done no playtesting, the idea just popped into my head to try my hand at a themed miniset. The seven would be baptism, communion, confession, ordination, last rites, confirmation and marriage.

Baptism - action
Cost $4?
+3 Cards
Trash a card from your hand
Discard a card from your hand
Put a card back on your deck.
Theme: making a fresh start

+2$

Last Rites - event

Trash your hand.
Okay, I admit, this one should maybe go in the really bad card ideas thread, but after sitting with a hand of Estate, Curse, Curse, Curse, Curse in an Ambassador/Seahag game, it was tempting. I'll try to make a more serious one later.

Regarding relatives.

Cousins and further away are just cousins, though.

In norway that depends on where you live; søskenbarn (sibling children) is the standard term for all cousins in the western area, while kusine (female cousin) / fetter (male cousin) is mostly used on the eastern side. Thanks to the capital being eastern and all kids having watched tv from Oslo all their lives, a westerner will understand kusine/fetter, but an easterner will be utterly confused at søskenbarn.

Unlike sweden we don't specify our aunts and uncles; tante/onkel no matter which side. Mormor/morfar/farmor/farfar specify grandparents, but we can also say bestefar/bestemor/besteforeldre (grandfather, grandmother, grandparents) - lit. "best parent". It's also more of an affectionate term, and is occasionally used also about a nice elderly whether or not they have grandchildren, children or even are related to the speaker at all.

Barnebarn (children children aka grandchildren) is the same - but sønnesønn (son son) or datterdatter (daughter daughter) is archaic if used at all.

One step up from the grandparents are 'oldemor'/'oldefar' - greatgrandparents, literally elder parents. Then it's tipp-oldemor, tipp-tipp-oldemor, etc, etc, etc... And for other stranger terms; grandtante/grandonkel is your parents aunt and uncle.

Tiebreaker
$2 Victory
Worth 1 VP, unless this would cause a tie, in which case it is worth randomly 0, 1 or 2 VP.

Wait, so it might not be a Tiebreaker?

Yes. And in which order do you count the points. And what happens when both players have Tiebreakers.

I hate when the cat brings home dead animals. The 'crunch, crunch, crunch' of chewed mouse-bones... I have to look away, I'll clean up the floor after she's done. I admit the weather wouldn't have tempted me to eat outside, but if she finds 'em out there, she can jolly well eat 'em out there.

Rules Questions / Re: Tokens on ruins?
« on: May 08, 2015, 09:28:52 am »
And all ruins in your deck becomes affected? Not just the one on top or anything?

Correct.

Unless you're Inheriting, in which case you put aside the ruin in question with the estate token, amIright? (I want to inherit ruined villages just for the heck of it... works with conspirators, at least.)

Dominionated thoughts:

I was considering how Harem was a victory card - that it would be quite a victory to get all those scheming ladies on the same page.

My next thought: "Lucky Page..."

Um... the Page is a woman. I guess she can trip over the Harem ladies by accident...
The Hero who can gain Harems at will is also a woman. Will likes that kind of hero.

Well, we don't know the orientation of the Page.. Lesbian, bi, portrait, landscape...

We  introduced Dominion to a friendly couple over the past two weekends. Unfortunately we have the base and intrigue sets only in Norwegian, and my Aussie female friend is not particularly good at the language of the country she's lived in for five years or so. So for the first game I had to remake it into Seaside/Cornucopia/Prosperity equivalents. No cursers, Lighthouse for defence, Rabble for draw and attack, Cutpurse as replacement for Militia, Warehouse for Cellar, Treasury for Market, Bazaar and Workers Village as splitters. In the second game we swapped out the unused Cutpurse for Fortune Teller ("a weak Rabble").

This weekend they came back, and we were six people with kids included, so we split into two groups.

Her husband needed to get effects repeatedly explained through several games, and their daughter was entirely new to it so my dear patient husband took it upon himself to teach them using our norwegian boxes. But the wife was awesome - on her third game (where my son insisted we add Sea Hag) she articulated Hamlet as a 'potential' Workers Village. The fourth game was KC as only splitter and Menagerie for +actions (Smuggling 3 lighthouses? Yes, please.). On her fifth (just me and her in 2p) we had moved on to "I have vault, Bishop and Horse Traders - how to get the most mileage out of my junk".

I may have moved a bit fast introducing Grand Market, Native Village and Bishop all in one go, but as long as she was picking up the concepts fast enough, the next step really is strategy and getting the most out of the cards. She and I have already agreed on meeting again on Tuesday for more playing..  8) I haz a convert.

I'm getting my cards tomorrow.

Are you gaining them, or getting them passed by Masquerade?

Neither. He's exchanging a 50$ card for it.

Damn - I wish I could Transmogrify this credit card into an Adventures box in hand!

My soda/pop/coke Teacher post has equal respect with 4 Teacher posts about Dominion combined in one post.  FOUR!

Do you think Miner calls it Soda and Minter calls it Pop?

Well, either would be harmful to minors.

*sigh* Typical f.ds. Explaining the joke gets more upvotes than the joke itself.. :P

Dominion: Adventures Previews / Re: New mechanics
« on: April 24, 2015, 02:20:41 am »
Played my first Adventures games tonight! Teacher was insane. Absolutely insane. Ridiculous. (all in a good way).

Card tokens, man. Card tokens.

Burning with envy. My local online store expected to have Adventures may/june...

71
Can Teacher move an already placed token? I can't see it coming up much, since it's very slow (late in game, must go back and forth to Tavern mat), but theoretically at least.. If Lost Arts can move the token to a new pile, I guess Teacher also could?

Dominion: Adventures Previews / Re: Munchkins...???

Personally I think Munchkin is a game best played drunk. It's not _supposed_ to be serious.

73
Doesn't everyone just use an app to randomize anyway?  Even shuffling 100 cards back when there were only 3 expansions was a chore and a half.

Yeah, they're, like, convenient, fast, and super easy to use.

Yep...

and then Black Market turns up and I have to shuffle anyway. :/

Was writing the rulebook entries for the individual Adventures cards more of challenge/effort than for Possession?
None of the rulebook FAQs have been especially challenging. You try to think of everything people will ask and then the set comes out and you see how you did. The Possession FAQ is especially long and well you will have to see the rulebook to know how Adventures does by that metric.

What's after the tab? Inheritance?

Since events aren't actually cards, I have used a couple of the previews on scraps of paper for an IRL game.
Borrow was brutal for letting my son open Goons/-. I tried to buy Expedition occasionally to try to catch up, but it just let me choose the best 3 out of 7 instead of 5 when those Goons got played..  Except for that first turn spike, it was hard to decide when to use Borrow. Sure, on a three card hand, every copper counts, but if the card you could have drawn is better than a copper, it's not worth it.

I think I'd rank them both as highly situational..
