Dominion General Discussion / Re: What is the worst card in Dominion?
« on: November 18, 2014, 07:15:09 pm »
I voted Chancellor because I've never bothered to buy it and anyone who I've played who bought it summarily lost. I think it could be fixed with a +1 Action.
Chancellor-stash is an elite two card combo, usually the best strategy whenever they appear in the same kingdom.
Is Chancellor-Stash that good? I thought it was mediocre, only viable on reasonably weak boards.
Scavenger-Stash on the other hand is pretty strong.

It's tempting to edit your post so that's a period.

Actually a pretty strong card, but playing it optimally will frustrate the hell out of everyone...

Perpetual Motion Machine
Action
Cost: $5

+1 Action
Reveal cards from the top of your deck until you reveal a Perpetual Motion Machine.  Draw it and discard the other revealed cards.  Discard this card from play.

--------------------------------------

The first time you gain this card in a turn, gain another one.
This is ridiculously OP...

Am I missing something?  I could only see this being ridiculous with Tunnel, but nothing else.

+1 action.  Shuffle your discard pile into your deck.  Look through your deck and discard any number of cards of your choice other than Perpetual Motion Machine and shuffle the remaining cards.
FTFY

So all Outposts always stay out, and all Throne Rooms which played an Outpost also always stay out.

1. The first Outpost during your turn always stays out, indeed. If you play two Outposts in the same turn, I have no idea whether it stays out (apparently not according to others). I can imagine both: the second outpost does have an effect (draw 3 instead of 5 cards), but that effects happens to coincide with another effect, so it's not really an extra effect.

2. Yes, Donald has specifically said that with TR + Tactician, the TR doesn't stay out, since the second play of Tactician didn't have an effect.

I love these kind of games. :)

Is it relevant what's under the footbridge?

Had Jack wrong beliefs about what was under the footbridge?

Is it nighttime? (at the time of Jack waking up)

Is it Band of Misfits? Reason: can trash other cards with the same name.

(...)
The problem is, Procession says "You may play an action card from your hand twice. (...)", so if you have an action card in your hand, playing a Procession always involves a choice.

Nice. 28, 31, 38 in order... In the third game I realized there was no penalty for misclicking, which helps quite a bit (by not having to double check when you see something a little off).

You play a card X. What is the maximum number of cards that can be put into play as a result (including X) before you have to make a decision again?
I bid 81.

Have a big megaturn, gaining the last Band of Misfits, Golem, Herald, Copper, Silver, Curse, Estate, and having 9 copies of Throne Room in your deck. Make sure the only card in the supply costing $4 or less is Throne Room. Your hand consists of one BoM and 10 Golems. I denote any action card which doesn't have a choice by Z (if Z draws, it doesn't draw any action cards, unless I mention so).

The card X you play is BoM. You must play BoM as Throne Room (no choice) and must play Golem twice (no choice).
* The first play you find 2 Zs (no choice),
* The second play you find 2 BoMs (no choice).
** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding 2 Zs twice.
** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding first two 2 Zs, then 2 BoMs.
*** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding 2 Zs twice.
*** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding first two 2 Zs, then 2 BoMs.
**** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding 2 Zs twice.
**** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding first two 2 Zs, then 2 BoMs.
***** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding 2 Zs twice.
***** Play BoM as TR: play Golem twice, finding first two 2 Zs, then 2 TRs.
****** Play TR: play Golem twice, finding 2 Zs twice (drawing 10 Heralds).
****** Play TR: play Herald twice.
******* Hit and play Z.
******* Hit and play BoM: play Herald twice.
******** Hit and play Workshop: gaining the last Throne Room (no choice).
******** Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
********* Hit and play Z.
********* Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
********** Hit and play Z.
********** Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
*********** Hit and play Z.
*********** Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
************ Hit and play Z.
************ Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
************* Hit and play Z.
************* Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
************** Hit and play Z.
************** Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
*************** Hit and play Z.
*************** Hit and play TR: play Herald twice.
**************** Hit and play two Zs.

Played: 10 BoMs, 10 TRs, 10 Golems, 10 Heralds, 40 Zs and Workshop, 81 total (if I can count)

In solo play:

a. (not so easy) have a deck with total cost in coins of $35+ when shuffling for the first time during clean-up of T2.
I can reach $39:

Shelter game (initial deck worth $3):
T1: play CCCCC + baker coin, buy Stonemason + 2 Nomad Camps (worth $10)
T2: play Necropolis, Nc, Nc, C, C, buy SM, gaining 2 Peddlers, buy Peddler. (worth $26)

Total: $39

I think Throne Rooming Mercenary and trashing cards only once is also a solution.

This might be relevant.

That is pretty depressing... I knew statistics in psychology (and other fields) is messed up, but not that it is so messed up to get 9 out of 9 positive results...

I think if you're going to do this comparison, you need to turn WW's list into lists based on price. I would actually just be interested in a graph of the QVist price lists and price lists created from WW's rankings.
That's a good idea. I might do that...

94
MOAR GRAPHS

Comparison of WW's rankings and Qvists' 2012-2014 rankings. Cards are labeled by their first two letters. Qvist ranks are the relative ranks in their price category, WW's ranks are relative ranks in WW's full card list (so it's comparing two different - but similar - things).

95
FWIW, I think visualizing the rankings by set might be a fun/interesting infoviz problem.

You could imagine having one colored curve per expansion.  The x axis corresponds to the cost specific percentile in the Qvist ranking.  The y axis is the percentage of cards in that set at or above the given percentile.

But I am lazy.

C'mon, be my minions, someone do it.  After all, I pay $300/year to keep the forum running just so you lovely people can talk about dominion ;).

Minion reporting in. Not quite as colorful as you described, though. The y-axis is the rank in WW's card list and the x-axis are the cards in a specific set (ordered by WW's rank). There's one graph with all sets.

Sorry, I forgot about this thread after I posted.

Guess: The first letter of the alphabet occurring in the question occurs only once.

Anyone who wants can go next.

Recently watched The Prestige.  Question for those who also watched it (and if you haven't, this really is a big spoiler, though I'll try to be ambiguous about it).

Do you think that the final solution to the trick really was just the sci-fi explanation as given?  I'm leaning towards the alternative, that this is just a trick on us, the real life audience of the film, and that the solution is that Angier managed to find and wrangle his previous body double before committing that final act of revenge.  All the sci-fi business was just Algier's story to reel in Borden.

I like your interpretation, never thought of it myself, but I agree with "the internet" here. I think the arguments by LastFootnote and Titandrake are pretty strong against your interpretation.

@pacovf: I'd say they're two different entities who have exactly the same memories in the instant of their creation. After that, they are clearly not the same: they have different thoughts and feelings (which is pretty clearly depicted in Angier's "test run" where he kills his clone).
