Donate+KC+Bridge is crazy  :)

On turn 5, at cleanup, how do you guarantee you draw KC+bridge from a 6 card deck?

Just read this thread now. These are some very impressive solutions! I enjoyed the incremental improvements in this thread.

@Stef: is there a reason the opponent doesn't buy Messenger on every turn the Outpost turn?

There are actually an infinite (yes, infinite) number of configurations of every supply pile, just determined by the number of embargo tokens on top of it. Since there can be arbitrarily many (but not infinite) embargo tokens on top of any pile, there are an infinite number of configurations of any pile.

I think it would work like knights, so there would be one of every castle, and one of each half of the split piles. It seems right in my head, but I'm not sure.
At most 1 Knight goes into the Black Market deck, not multiple of them.

1. I buy Border Village and gain Bridge.  I can put them on top of my deck in either order (because Border Village's effect is on gain, not on buy).
I think this is already false (so 2 and 3 are as well). I cannot get Border Village on top of the Bridge because of the lose-track rule.

I buy Border Village.
I gain Border Village (move it to discard pile).
Two on-gain effects happen, I can choose which one happens first. I can first move my Border Village to the top of the deck or first gain a card with Border Village.
Let's gain a card with Border Village first.
I gain a Bridge (move it to discard pile, covering up Border Village, meaning that Travelling Fair has lost track of Border Village)
I can now optionally move Bridge to the top of deck.
For the Border Village gain, 1 effect has been resolved, and the other does nothing anymore because of the lose-track rule, so I cannot but Border Village on top of my deck.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: win without taking a turn
« on: May 18, 2016, 11:02:44 pm »
Here is a way to win on points.
6 player game. The first 5 players follow this strategy. In the turn of player 5, he buys Moat and Ambassador from the Black Market deck (gaining at least one curse with Haggler), passes the Moat with Masquerade to player 6, and then play Ambassador, revealing Curse (but not returning it). Then player 5 empties four piles, without buying VP cards (or getting VP in another way), so that player 6 wins the game with 0 points, since everyone else has -1 (or fewer) points

Lunatic mode: During a turn before you play your turn, play Masquerade, passing Champion, and play Possession. On the Possession turn, force him to play Champion. Now you can execute your turn as normal.

New puzzle: Let a card play itself.

Clarification: Cards like Throne Room can play other cards. They can even play another Throne Room. Typically, you cannot play the same copy of Throne Room, because that card is already in play. This puzzle asks you to do exactly that.

I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet. f.ds, I am disappointed.
You don't have to be disappointed:
[...] so you can get arbitrarily much coins and buys by doing this as often as you like (however, not infinitely many, since that takes infinite time)

However, today I realized this new way of getting arbitrarily many buys and coins is "better" (in some sense) than what could previously be done with Champion/Diadem(/Travelling Fair). Using those cards, you can also get arbitrarily much coins and buys in a single turn. However, this solution is "better", because you only need some fixed amount of preparation time, and then you can get arbitrarily much coins/buys in the next turn. With Champion/Diadem the amount of preparation time you need scales with how much coins/buys you want.

If this wasn't clear, let me try to explain it in a different way. Suppose you want 10^1000 coins. Using Villa, this can be done in less than 20 turns, although the turn where you get all those coins will take a very long time. Using Champion/Diadem, this will probably take at least 10^900 turns of set-up time.

That still is a bit reliant on shuffle luck though, on a very technical level. My own solution is completely luckless to get started.
Eventually you'll hit every starting hand (with probability 1).

If that's not okay you can solve it by using Black Market and putting Scrying Pool, Council Room and Hunting Ground in the BM deck. You can then initially draw your deck with SP, and use CR and HG for draw (the disadvantage is that the on-trash ability of HG caused me headaches, you need a bit extra draw to draw those annoying Duchies (but that can be easily solved by putting some extra cards in the BM deck)).

I can do it with 5 kingdom cards and 2 events, without durations or teacher-tokens and even without Black Market. This is in a solo game; with opponents I need every opponent to have a Moat in hand, which adds 1 kingdom pile.

Kingdom: Ambassador, Villa, Rogue, King's Court, Council Room
Events: Ferry, Bonfire
shelter game

Preparation: Put Ferry token on KC. Get a deck consisting of KC*6, Amb, Rogue*4, Villa*4, CR*3, Overgrown Estate, Hovel. Trash all starting copper and Necropolis and make sure at least the following is in the trash: KC*4, Amb*1, Rogue*4, Villa*2, CR (trash with Bonfire).

Start your infinite turn when you have KC*2, CR*2 (this will eventually always happen). Play KC-KC-CR-CR-Villa to draw your deck.

-- START LOOP -- (hand consist of KC*4, Amb*1, Rogue*4, Villa*3, CR (and OE), trash consists of KC*4, Amb*1, Rogue*4, Villa*2, CR)
Now play your 4 KCs in a chain to play 7 actions three times:
play 4 Rogues three times, to gain KC*4, Amb, Rogue*4, Villa*2, CR
play CR three times to draw your deck.
play 2 Villas three times.

Play Ambassador, returning a Villa.

You gained 30 coins and 9 buys by this KC-chain. Go to the buy phase and buy Bonfire 6 times to trash 4*KC, 4*Rogue, CR, Villa*2, Amb. Buy a Villa to return to your action phase, and repeat the loop.
-- END LOOP --

Every iteration of the loop gives 8 coins and 2 buys, so you can get arbitrarily much coins and buys by doing this as often as you like (however, not infinitely many, since that takes infinite time)

EDIT: simplify a little bit.
EDIT 2: Had to make some minor changes because you cannot trash hovel without having a victory card in your deck in this kingdom.

Getting enough draw, coins and buys is tricky, without any of the tokens which Champion Teacher can put on piles. The details are the hard part  :)

I could be wrong, but I think this is in error:

[...]

According to the wiki:
[...]
That is the default case. However, it works different with self-trashing cards.

Also according to the wiki:
Quote
If you use Throne Room on Band of Misfits, choosing to play Band of Misfits as a self-trashing card (for example, Feast), the Band of Misfits will be in the trash after the first play as Feast, meaning it has left play. Throne Room then plays Band of Misfits again (getting token effects again, if there are any), allowing you to make a new choice as to what Band of Misfits should emulate. However, since Band of Misfits is in the trash, you will only get the on-play effects of the emulated card. Similar logic applies to one-shots that do not trash themselves, but still leave play, such as Island, as well as the case where there are no non-empty Action supply piles cheap enough for Band of Misfits to copy.
  • Under this ruling, it is possible for a multiplied Band of Misfits to trash itself (emulating any trashing one-shot), then gain itself back out of the trash (emulating Graverobber or Rogue, its cost reduced by Ferry).

Rules Questions / Re: Introducing a new rules document
« on: May 07, 2016, 04:56:03 pm »
Very nice!

Some feedback:
  • In "Abilities between turns" you mention "Between turns, the player who last had a turn is considered to be the current player, and so will resolve between-turn abilities first." It is perhaps good to mention that he also gets to choose which ability is resolved first, if there are multiple abilities which he should resolve. Also, you might want to explicitly mention that at this moment this player is not possessed (even if he was possessed during the last turn), so he makes the choice himself. (After writing this I noticed that this is explained in the Possession reference, but I still think it should be included here as well)
  • About the lose track rule: you might want to mention that shuffling your deck will cause every ability to lose track of every card in your deck (even if the top card happens to be still the top card after shuffling). Now that I say this, I actually have a rule question myself: is this also true if your deck consists of only 1 card? So if I have 1 card in my deck, and I shuffle my deck, will abilities lose track of that card in your deck?

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Max VP tokens from Goons.
« on: May 07, 2016, 02:37:25 pm »
I can get (a little over) 29 million VP tokens from Goons in a single turn. First do this:
http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=14598.msg595705#msg595705
Then play 10 Goons, and have Trader in hand. Then buy Curse with all your 2.9+ million buys and reveal Trader each time.

This is in a single player game. With more players, there are more Estates, and you can get a bit more.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Have a big turn

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Sorry for my late reaction. The main ingredients of my solution have been mentioned in this thread. You start a big Procession chain, using also BoM and inherited Estates as Procession. You Ferry Graverobbers so that you can play BoM as Graverobber. Some additional tricks:
  • Play a single Highway, so that you can Graverobber King's Court.
  • Put the +1 card token on BoM, so that you can draw BoM back immediately. This allows you to do tricks like the following:
Code: [Select]
Play KC 1
. Play BoM 1, choose Embargo
.. Play Embargo, Embargo the Curse pile, trash 'BoM 1'-as-Embargo
. Play BoM 1, choose Graverobber
.. Play Graverobber, gain BoM 1 from the trash
. Play BoM 1, draw BoM 1, choose Embargo
.. Play Embargo, Embargo the Curse pile [don't trash BoM 1, because of the lose track rule]

    Solution:

Kingdom: King's Court, Band of Misfits, Procession, Embargo, Graverobber, Throne Room, Black Market
BM deck: Highway, Scrying Pool, some gainers, some villages
    Events: Ferry, Pathfinding, Seaway, Inheritance
    No shelters, no colonies

Preparation: use a couple of turns to do the following.
    • Put the +1 Card and +1 Buy token on BoM.
    • Ferry Graverobber, Inherit Procession.
    • Gain 10 KC, 10 BoM, 9 TR, 7 Estates (plus your 3 starting Estates) and 8 Processions.
Final turn: use workshop-variants to gain the last TR and Estate. Play Highway. Use Scrying Pool to draw your deck, so that you have 10 TR, 10 KC, 10 BoM, 8 Proc, 11 Estates in hand. Now do the following (some steps in the middle have been omitted):
    Code: [Select]
    Play Estate 1
    . Play Estate 2
    .. Play Proc 1
    ... Play Proc 2
    ... . Play Proc 3
    ... .. Play Proc 4

    • ... 2903651 buys (only from the +buy token on BoM)
    • ... played 6494732 actions (+ a couple from the gainers/villages/drawers before your Procession-chain).

Some things to note / be careful about:
    • BoM will be played as Procession, Graverobber and Embargo, which means at least one of each of them has to stay in the supply. This means that you will only have 8 Processions in your deck: 1 is in the supply, and 1 is inherited.
    • It also means that you don't want to accidentally gain one of these cards with Procession. But this is okay: these cards cost (after Highway + Ferry cost reduction) $3, $2 and $1, while the only cards you Process are Procession, TR, oM, and KC, costing $3, $3, $4 and $6.

The full text file with all moves (about 7 million lines; 7 MB after compression) or the Mathematica code to generate this file are available upon request.

For the multiplication sign you just type $\times$.

I type C-x 8 x because I use Emacs and am therefore superior to you all.
My input method for Emacs allows me to type \x. I win :)

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: How fast can you empty the silver pile?
    « on: February 11, 2016, 12:30:34 pm »
    I can open Silver/Silver!
    Not if you open 5/2
That used to be right, until:
    • Nomad Camp
    • Baker
    • Alms
    • Borrow
    • Save
    • Travelling Fair

    Maybe more I'm forgetting.

How do you open Silver/Silver with 5/2 if Nomad Camp is on the board (and none of these other cards)?

Another option is if opponents buy Lost Cities.

PS: if the variance means sN-12, an exact solution is
    (3,6-\sqrt{6},6,6,6+\sqrt{6},9)
and all solutions for n=6 are of the form
    (x,9-x-y,6,6,9-x+y,x+6) for 2+(1/2)\sqrt{2} < x < 4-(1/2)\sqrt{2} and y=\sqrt{-2x^2+12x-12}.

    EDIT: typos

The problem is that the question is ambiguous, since variance can mean two different things, either sN-12 or sN2. See Wolfram Mathworld.

WW assumed that the variance is sN2, and in that case he is right: with n=6 you can get sN2 arbitrarily close to 6, but not exactly 6. His solution for n=7 is correct under this interpretation

Tables and DStu assume the variance is sN-12, and in this case n=6 is possible and optimal.

I'm so glad this finally is announced, so that I can tell everyone that you all should get this expansion!  I've been fortunate enough to get to play with some of the cards, and I think this might be the best Dominion expansion yet.

Isn't the new expansion always the best expansion? It consists entirely of things you're not (yet) familiar with.

Or do you mean that it's the best expansion yet, even taking that into account? In that case, that's a very tall order. And very hard to tell if you've seen only part of the expansion.

Sorry if this sounded too grumpy. It's okay to be super excited about the new expansion!

There's a small bug with the coloring of Ruins in the log. If the corresponding non-ruined card is in the kingdom, only the "ruined" part of the name is colored brown.
For example, if there's Village, Ruined Village will show up as Ruined Village (brown ruined, white village). The same happens for (Abandoned) Mine, (Ruined) Library, and (Ruined) Market.
A similar thing: in games with Black Market, at the start of the log it gives the content of the black market deck as
    Quote
    Black Market: ...
I've seen the "Market" part of this text colored white, while the rest was not.

Here is the solution to empty the supply on turn 1 of player 5 in a 5-player game.

(I left out the last part, which is very similar to CC's solution to empty the supply)

Kingdom: Lost City (LC), Messenger (Me), Stonemason (SM), Masquerade (Ma), Procession (Pr), Fortress (Fo), Catacombs (Ca), Haggler (Ha), King's Court (KC), Watchtower (Wt), Black Market (BM)
Black Market deck: Baker, Young Witch, Prince, Coppersmith, Graverobber, Rogue, ...
Events: Burrow, Travelling Fair, Mission, Ball
    Shelter game

    Starting hands:
    P1 draws 5C
    P2 draws 5C
    P3 draws 5C
    P4 draws 2C,N,H,O
    P5 draws 2C,N,H,O

    ----- Player 1: -----
P1 plays 5C, spends baker token, buys Burrow, buys SM1, gains LC1 and LC2. Everyone else draws 2C.
    Cleanup: P1 draws C,C,O,N.

    ----- Player 2: -----

    * Now P5 can start its big Procession chain, playing Procession whenever possible, and Fortress otherwise. The first gain priority is Procession (via Catacombs), and when the Processions are out, start gaining Hagglers and a single Black Market (via Catacombs) and possibly another Watchtower.
    * Then P5 can play most Hagglers, playing Wt for draw. Then play a BM, buying a card costing at least 6, gaining the remaining Hagglers, and as much Watchtowers and Black Markets as needed. If P5 needs more draw or actions, P5 can gain some Lost Cities.
    * Then P5 gains all KCs by buying a single Prince from the BM deck. Now KC the remaining BMs to gain as much cards as possible, gaining a huge number of cards, including Coppers. Buy a Scrying Pool and Counting House for draw. Buy a single Coppersmith and KC it for coins.
    * For maximal coins, P5 must keep 2 in the supply during the Procession chain, and Process Coppersmith twice, getting it back with Rogue and Graverobber. Also, you want to play some Masquerades to get some Coppers from the other players (and give some junk back, e.g. Stonemasons gained with Haggler).
