or farmlands trashin borde vilages for provinces

We have a Winner ;)

As i said it's not the super-extreme-hyper-over9000-power-combo, but i was surprised how obvious my victory was. Of course Vault makes Farmlands-to-Province easier, too, and if it misses that, i could always do that with BV.

Fairgrounds?

Fairgrounds wouldn't be a very good buy with my cards. But it's somehow "closer" than Duke.

Also: It's not a card for 5$.

Okay, i'm gonna tell you one of them: Border Village. It helped me fill my deck with itself and Vault, because Vault always hits 6$ with a normal starting hand. It also made it possible to hit 6$ without discarding everything i had in hand..
The other was not Duke, but we are getting closer.

Ok, so if you say that you didn't play it often, I guess you mean a Reaction card. Then it heavily depends on your opponents and the other cards on the board. With trashing of your opponents I guess that Market Square would be pretty good.

Nope, i don't mean a Reaction. Maybe i should tell you, before you get exited and expect something extremely powerful and new. But if you want to keep guessing: The board had no discard attacks, so i knew playing Vault would always give me a certain amount of money. Also, i often played more than one, still almost never got 8$, and didn't care.

My opponents were no pros.

About "Spamming"... What i meant is, i did concentrate on those cards. Sorry, i didn't want to imply i played the second card often. But i... used it often. ;) *Hint Hint*

Also you can guarantee you'll play Vault often simply by having many Vaults.

Actually i did not expect to so clearly beat Tunnels, and a Tunnel would have helped myself. I just never had the time to buy one. Obviously speed was the main difference between my tactic and theirs - i needed setup, but mine was faster.

No, sorry, none of those.
Some more hints: I also spammed a third card besides Vault and that other Action. Both cards also synergized with each other, but Vault and that Action helped me do it. It was a Province game, too - i wouldn't have done it otherwise, because i needed some set-up time.
Now it's easy.

Puzzles and Challenges / Vault on a Tunnel Board
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:53:15 am »
Recently we played on a Tunnel board, and i happened to hit a 5/2 opening. I bought a Vault.
My second buy was Squire, the only 2$ in the kingdom. I only bought one more type of action card, and no other Squire.

My opponents bought Tunnels like crazy. They had a reason to do so, because from turn 3 on i played Vault almost every turn. The one time i did not, i bought my (one and only) Tunnel, but that was late in the game. So my question to you is: What other cards synergized good enough with Vault to make me (almost) ignore Tunnel and win with this strategy?

How about:

Medallion
Treasure - $4
Worth $1
When you discard this from play, you may trash any other card you have in play. If you do, gain a card costing exactly $1 more than it.

Btw. Medallion (either version) is better than Loan as you can make use of the Copper before you trash it. also you can decide which Treasure to hit.
Problem with both (and reason why i think 4$ is fine): Curses and Estates are dead cards and can never be trashed by this.

Oppressor
Action - $5
+$2
Each player may discard any number of cards. +1 buy for each card you discard this way.
Each other player looks through his discard pile and may reveal 2 cards costing $2 or less, placing them anywhere in his deck. If he doesn't, he gains a Curse.
Oppressor 2
Action - Attack - $5
Choose one: +3 cards, or draw the bottom 3 cards of your deck.
Each player with 5 or more cards in their hand discards a card.
Each other player looks through his discard pile and may reveal a card costing $2 or less, placing it on the bottom of his deck. If he doesn't, he gains a Curse.

Problem with this one: It can be chained up to grant a terrible turn later when somebody reaches the bottom of the pile. Even in games with good 2$-Actions, an empty discard will make you gain a curse and put it under your deck in turns. For example, if you have an average of one Pearl Diver in hand each turn and somebody KC's this every turn, until you reach your decks bottom, he basically adds your PD from before and a Curse to it every turn. If you have no acceptable 2$s, or every other player attacks this way, soon your deck's bottom will be a pile of Curses, Coppers and Estates.

It is not as bad as Sea Hag would be without the discard, as you can do something to avoid that before you reach the bottom. But there will not always be such a way to defend.

Would it be worth extending this concept to other base cards?

Copper: Moneylender, Coppersmith, Cutpurse, Apothecary, Counting House, Mountebank, Grand Market, Noble Brigand, Cache, Ill Gotten Gains, Beggar, Count
Gold: Treasure Map, Explorer, Transmute, Hoard, Bag of Gold, Fool's Gold, Tunnel, Noble Brigand, Market Square, Sir Vander, Governor

Estate: Baron, Followers, Hunting Grounds
Duchy: Duke, Transmute, Tournament, Duchess, Count, Hunting Grounds
Province: Explorer, Tournament, Fool's Gold

Curse: Cursers, Fortune Teller, Vagrant

Potion: Apothecary, Alchemist

I allready tried to do something like that that with Curse. Old Thread showed there was much concern about the fact that Curse is a type and a name. Nonetheless, the old card ("Swamp") was in this Thread: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=7011.0

The new and improved card, also called Swamp, works the same very different and is now free to gain not only instead of a Curse, but of any other card. (As it's weak it will be gained instead of more harmful cards, mostly). It is not a Curse, though, and so you cannot discard it for a Mountebank, for example. But it avoids the ruling issues that - as far as i can see - Silver Statue still has: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=7084.0
In any case, i think that it's easier to do such things with Curse, at least if you care much about ruling issues.

Isn't Ruminate strictly better than Feast except for with TR/KC (but with KC, you can gain a Province by trashing the KC)?

Also with Highway/Bridge/Princess/BM+Quarry

Also when you want to gain a card that isn't a $5 (as you sometimes do; such as when you want only one copy of a $5 card and your feast doesn't come up soon enough)

It's probably another Noble Brigand/Thief situation.

Those two are good points. Feast also allows to gain a card "up to" 5$, and is therefore a bit more flexible than "exactly one more". Still, cost reducers, "Play it X times"-cards and boards where you prefer a cheaper card are far from present in every game, so i'd like to think it is better than Feast often enough to make some more tweaks necessary.

EDIT: Medallion seems nice. I don't know if the one time you need to play it more before it becomes a Gold is enough to make it not "better" than Cache, though...

Shuffling would take too long, although so would the AP of placing a card anywhere in the deck. I just wanted to avoid easily wrecking an entire turn with multiple plays, so I can't do top or bottom decking. Shuffling would be ideal if I didn't have to consider the real life implication.

I don't know, the active player doesn't need to shuffle. So it should be fine to shuffle them in. After all looking through the discard will probably take longer than that. But that's just what i think.

Rules Questions / Re: Feast, Throne Room and Band of Misfits - why?
« on: March 01, 2013, 07:03:29 pm »
I was saying what Donald is saying in his reply to you, which I think you misunderstood (even though you said you understood it). Without the special ruling (that TR locks in the card), you would indeed get nothing the second time. The reason is not that you can't play the BoM the second time, when it's in trash. You can, and you even get to choose a card. But it doesn't do you any good, because the last clause on BoM means it will never be that card, since it's not in play. This means you can't play it as that card. If a card isn't a Smithy, you can't play it as a Smithy. That's the conclusion. In your last post you get a little deeper into the intricacies of "playing a card" and what a a card "is". I suggest you read the whole other thread, because pretty much everything is dealt with there.

Well, maybe i really got it wrong. To me, the first part of the card - "Play this as if it was..." was enough for it to actually have an effect. If a card has to be a Smithy to be played as one, of course it makes sense that it doesn't. I was not aware that this is the case. So i'll just read the other Thread instead of clogging this one up with questions that were allready discussed, then. Thanks for the patience :)

Rules Questions / Re: Feast, Throne Room and Band of Misfits - why?
« on: March 01, 2013, 12:03:53 pm »
I'll be honest: even though I accept the ruling that TR locks on whatever BoM said first, it makes more sense to me that TR locks in on BoM and plays "whatever this card is" twice. The ONLY time this matters is on one-shot cards like Feast and Embargo, but when those are trashed they're no longer in play, so BoM is no longer locked in. However, BoM is in the trash now, so it can't lock onto anything because it's no longer "while in play" and therefore can't be anything.

And therefore?

A witch!...

I mean, therefore we let TR play that same action again, because it's better than letting BoM sit in the trash with no use at all.

(this means BoM as Fortress becomes a BoM again after being trashed and returned to your hand)
First of all, +1 for the witch.

I'm not sure, but we probably agree that with your ruling BoM would not lock-out of TR only because it gets trashed. It would still be locked as the card chosen for TR to double-play, as it's the card i chose from my hand.

It would stop being the card you played it as, though, and would never again become another card (than BoM), as long as it is in the trash (and therefore not "in play"). But: You still could play BoM a second time, choosing a card. And you could play it as any cheaper card in the supply. You would not get any "while this in in play" benefits, as BoM doesn't become the impersonated card, but you could play it as it. This means any +2$, +2Cards, attacks, etc would still happen. That's not "nothing".

Gain from an opponent hand is strange, what happens if you Trader the gain, the opponent mantains their card? It is trashed (nothing indicates it should)? It goes to the supply?
A very good point. The card should be trashed inbetween and gained from there, as Thief does. OR it should just be put in your hand, without "gaining", similar to what Masquerade does.

I personally don't think "Steal from opponents hands" attacks are a very good idea. No matter whether you know what you draw or not, no matter how many. It's extremely swingy. It's good you limited it to attacks and Treasures, though. Maybe you should also limit it to a certain level, like Knights do with their trashing.

You make it seem as there was a rule saying a card cannot be played when it is in the trash or, in general, not in play.
That's not it. It's that Band of Misfits immediately stops being the card you played it as in that situation, because of the text on Band of Misfits itself.

I understand that, Donald. What i wanted to say was that what hinders BoM to be played as itself after being trashed is not that it's trashed, but that TR "locks in" and therefore doesn't allow such a change. Jeebus seemed to imply the first thing with his post:

Yes, we did. :)
The conclusion was that the second time you play BoM-as-Feast you would get nothing, because the BoM is not in play at all that time [...]

Even without the TR-Lock the second play would not be "nothing", would it? A Throned Feast is played as two Feasts, too - no matter it gets trashed inbetween. So BoM would still be played, and only the lock hinders it to be played as BoM again once it's trashed.

...

Right...?

The thread from way back when at http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=4083.0 eventually became a six-page-long discussion of this very question. I don't think anyone came out of that with more understanding than they started with.
Yes, we did. :)
The conclusion was that the second time you play BoM-as-Feast you would get nothing, because the BoM is not in play at all that time (as per the card text "this is that card until it leaves play"). This was so counter-intuitive that no-one in the discussion thought about from the beginning. So as Donald said, he made a special ruling.

You make it seem as there was a rule saying a card cannot be played when it is in the trash or, in general, not in play. I don't remember such a rule. In fact, every Action card on my hand is "not in play", so according to your reasoning, i could not play it. The fact that BoM is not in play has the effect that it is BoM again. It has nothing to do with whether you can play it. To me it was obvious that the trash did not hinder me playing a card, which was why i never found something wrong with TR-ing a Feast. On the other hand, this was what made me think BoM should be playable as two different cards when played as a one-shot in the first place. Only one thing i know for sure: The fact that a card is not in play doesn't keep me from playing it, and so i see no reason being in the trash should forbid it.

Yeah, I agree. But note that this can put you in the odd situation of having to reveal a card that you may have actually lost track of (because it's been covered up in the discard pile).

How could that happen? You reveal Tunnel when you discard it; presumably, that means you are holding it and putting it in your discard pile, and as you do that you reveal it.

Quote from: Tunnel
2 VP
----------
When you discard this other than during a Clean-up phase, you may reveal it. If you do, gain a Gold.

Quote from: Tunnel (alternate)
2 VP
----------
When you discard this other than during a Clean-up phase, you may gain a Gold.

How are these different?
Second one leaves you no choice, but that's all.

Golem is completely new to me but it is a problem. are there many cards that also get confusing when playing this? any suggestions?
There are a few that make you reveal from your deck until something is hit, but Golem is clearly the worst - probably because it somehow resembles your card. It reveals cards from your deck until two Action cards other than Golem are revealed. Then you play both of them in the order you choose.

Yes, it would have tracking issues, I'll admit that. I'm not sure they're any worse than several Dark Ages cards, though. If RTT doesn't like the idea, I'll gladly refine it and use it for my own fan expansions.

I'm not saying it's not a nice idea ;)
I'd like to see what will in the end be made out of it.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Vassal

I just thought of a crazy tweak for this card.

Vassal
Types: Action
Cost: $4
+1 Action. Set aside a card from your hand. Discard your hand, then +3 Cards. You may play a Vassal from your hand. Return the set-aside card to your hand.

So as you chain them, you can accumulate actions and increase your hand size.

I don't know if the Cultist wording is so good here. What if i want to return the cards to my hand and play a Vassall after that, for whatever reason? Triggering reshuffles, discarding Tunnels, putting all my victories in the now-empty discard... I believe this might be very confusing, then. Maybe there's a way to achieve the same thing with a less complicated mechanic. Cultist works fine because playing a Cultist when you can is almost always the better choice, not doing so usually will mean Cultist won't be played at all. With Vasall i'm not so sure, especially because of the Vanilla Bonus, that, other than with Cultist, is not "triggered" instantly - you know what i mean.

It's nice. Just not extremely interesting. It loses from the fact that playing several of these will not add much, as won't having several of them in your hand. That's where Minion is better. Other than that, it seems fairly well balanced.

I think the proper counter to KC-possession is the resign button.

No, its a KC-Possession of your own!
Or a deck with it's only Actions being Golem, Saboteur and Goons :)
Check out the Dominion Strategy Wiki and it's page about Possession. There are quite a few counters to it, also to multiple plays.

cause i am German its called "Silberschmiede" on my actual Card
Of course you can. Still, if you were looking for another name close to Smithy, how about Blacksmith (Hufschmied)? It contains a bit of Smithy, gives you money like Horse Trader does and likes Trusty Steeds Silver (Okay, i made that connection up... Sue me.)

Rules Questions / Re: Thief can trash Spoils, but not gain it - right?
« on: February 27, 2013, 04:28:49 pm »
It doesn't say "gain the card from the trash" so it can't lose track of it.

This doesn't follow. Lose-track applies whenever a card tries to move a card that isn't where it's expected to be. ActionThief would expect Fortress to be in the trash, it wouldn't be there, so it wouldn't get gained.

why does ActionThief expect Fortress to be in the trash? All it knows is the card was Trashed.

 ???

...Because if you put a card in the trash, that's where you expect it to be?
That's all totally different stuff than my original question, but well... ;)
I second this. If you discard or gain a card, it is supposed to be in your discard pile. That's why you can shuffle Inn back in your deck. So if you trash a card, you expect it to be in the trash.
