Variants and Fan Cards / Re: The Reverse-Saboteur: It raises questions
« on: August 01, 2013, 05:38:38 pm »
Isn't Rebuild basically a reverse Saboteur?
One that only aims at the cards where Saboteur harms you the most, adds an action and can go up to 3$ more, but it's pretty much the same, just overpowered.

By the current wording i can play it as a Madman or Spoils and put it on the respective pile, covering the pile up and causing some confusion. I suggest limiting it to cards in the supply, as with BoM.

Also i suggest to borrow the "until it leaves play" from Band of Misfits instead of "this turn only". As SirPeebles said, the fact that Duration cards give you some benefit next turn is not at all dependant on them staying out, rule-wise. So even if this card leaves play after this turn, it will still have the duration effect later (having the card stay out is just for players comfort). So as you can't keept the duration effect from happening, just leaving the card in play makes it a lot easier to use. And then of course there's the option of ignoring the rules - but you'd never do that, would you...?

Rules Questions / Re: Forager and Possession
« on: August 01, 2013, 02:17:19 pm »
You both got it right.

Possession makes your opponent set aside cards that he trashes. So while they are in fact trashed, they don't stay in the trash. The mechanic resembles Fortress' on-trash clause.

Quote
Throne Room
Action-$4
Play an Action card from your hand, play this card as if it were the played card.
This is that card until it leaves play.

In normal case this is similar to normal throne room, not sure about the other case though.

Quote
Throne Room
Action-$4
+1 action
Reveal an Action card (other than throne room?) from your hand, play this card as if it were the revealed card.
This is that card until it leaves play.

This is better than normal throne room and can function as a village to play different actions. If you reveal a throne room it becomes a super village.

The first one changes cards like Goons, Highway, Hermit, Haggler etc that have the "while this is in play" clause as well as one-shots like Feast or Embargo. The second one does that and also makes it a memory game. It also works with Treasure Map.

If any, i would do the first. But then again normal TR is just fine.

100 pages of (mostly) awesomeness.  Epic.

(almost) 100 pages -- not till this one is actually full :P
Now it's 100 (plus a bit extra)

180. I forgot that Horse Traders are plural and became desperate when "Horse Trader" didn't work. Also misspelled Embassy. I didn't even have a chance to get frustrated over the correct writing of Mercenary not being accepted, because i forgot what the english word for "Söldner" was in the first place. The only sets that had no gaps were Alchemy, the promos and the basics, equal gaps around everywhere else.

Forgot to name famous cards like Lab, Masquerade and Jack of all Trades, interestingly.

I am now starting a movement to call the Vanilla Village the Vanillage.  Who's with me?

Which one? Worker's Village?

The original one, it's called the Vanilla Village sometimes, because it's the first.

I don't understand. Why should Plaza be called Vanillage?

Plaza has text instructions on it and therefore is not vanilla. Sudgy was talking about Bazaar.

"Each player (including you) reveals a card from his hand. The player to his left chooses whether he discards the revealed card or trashes it."

Yes, it has the "The Romans befriended the Gauls, but they slew them" problem. So what, lern 2 context

This doesn't do what the card wants to do (wrong direction) and the context problem can be avoided. A legitimate solutions would be:

"Each player (including you) reveals a card from his hand and either trashes or discards it (the player to his right decides)."

Why should the card want this direction?  I don't see any obvious gameplay reason to go counter to Contraband, Envoy, and Advisor.

No gameplay reasons, i just wanted a complete translation of the original card. Which was pretty nit-picky, if i think about it.

I'm not in love with the card, but it needs +$2 to even approach viability, I'm guessing.

Seems not enough better than Smithy; you're still not at all happy about drawing it dead.

Well, it wasn't that much about doing an awesome card, but about the mechanism in general. I wouldn't have opened a new thread for Jeweler, that's for sure (By the way i guess you are both right about the +2$). Maybe putting the mechanic on Beer Wagon is more to your liking:

Beer Wagon - $4
Action - Reaction
+1 Card, +2 Actions

When you play a Treasure, you may discard this. If you do: +$2

The "When you play a Treasure" clause could be considered a little nerf. After all, it's a card that can become one of two 3$s, for 4$.

Aaaaaand now it's almost strictly better than Silver for $4. The "when you play a Treasure" clause just isn't much of a penalty.

It was strictly better than Silver to begin with. My original intent still was to talk about the mechanic, though i admit speaking about nerfs is actually part of a balance discussion. Truth be told, i didn't really think much about balance and just wrote what crossed my mind in that respect. I consider a Silver/Village underpriced for 4$, myself.

Do you guys actually mean "discard this" in general, or "discard this from your hand"?  I don't think there is a general case rule like there is for "gain [from the supply]", so as written I could play it and then discard it from play for the extra bonus.

I meant "from your hand". Good catch.

Ever played a rats kingdom against AI?
Apparently not, but he'd probably win, he's a pretty good player.

I don't doubt it. Actually i only heard about Goko, as i don't own Dark Ages there. But for Androminion i know from personal experience that if an AI player ever gains a Rats at any time, it will play Rats and replace cards with them until the pile is out and will ultimatively have no other cards but Rats.

Off-topic: Machinarium! It's a fun game, you people should play it.

Didn't even notice it was Machinarium, but i always liked that kind of game.

Crap, I just realized that Smugglers is 6 or less, not 3 to 6.  I feel stupid now...

No need to, i didn't get what you guys were talking about for a looooong time...

"And now for something completely different."
What is this? I don't even...

Ever played a rats kingdom against AI? Both Androminion and Goku bots can't handle the card very well.

Is anybody else from Dragon Ball good at playing it?

I edited that, so there's no way to prove i did something wrong. :P

Here's an idea i had recently. It isn't exactly a Treasure/Action, but usually it will work around the same, so i thought i'd post it here anyway.

Jeweler
5$, Action - Reaction
+ 3 Cards

When you play a Treasure card, you may discard this. If you do: +1$ +2$

Same works for Beer Wagon. I guess the Reaction part could also be triggered "At the start of your buy phase" or something like that.

In a Colony game, Rebuild is weak against pretty much everything.

How did Asper get more the 6 respect for that?

Yeah, he should have gotten 3 to 6 respect from the previous poster...

Hey, well I got 3 to 6 respect!

How dare you? ;)

Another gag is on Crossroads.
One of the signs points towards Essen, where a renowned german board game convention takes place. I can't decipher the other sign, though.

4046
Here's what i dislike about the general concept:
First, it's swingy. The cards are pretty luck dependant and i wouldn't buy any them usually.
Second, these cards again discourage variety. Some cards - like Minion - are single card strategies allready. One shouldn't reward players for that, as it's pretty boring. There's a reason a whole expansion is dedicated to reward variety.
Third, even those one-card strategies don't profit that much from your cards. If you really want to have many of a card, you wouldn't want to discard any of them. I guess those cards work best with Coppers and Victory Cards, especially cheap ones like Estate and Tunnel. But i really don't see that they are that compelling.

Sorry for being so negative.  :-\

4047
Maybe if we had a good way of deciding which cards to put in. What we could do would be having a thread in which we talk about the cards we like made by other people. I don't really know whether it should be sticky, though. Or maybe just another contest - i'd really like to participate in one, some time.

4048
The guy who copies money, must have friends in the cloning business - they can Mint Harems!
Almost any card's interaction with Harem is weird.

Making women (or people in general) a currency is weird to start with.

I like it when several strategies seem around the same level. It makes for an exciting game. I don't know if yours really offers it, because when i personally design a set with balanced strategies in mind i usually miss something and somebody beats me with the one big strategy i missed. So maybe i'm missing out something here, too. Only thing that comes to my mind is how great Warehouse is here for many combos, including Fool's Gold, Conspirator, Menagery and maybe Baron or Duke. Personally i'd probably try warehouse/Conspirator and maybe add HoP or Minion later.

Edit: Why the heck did i quote the opening post when i am the first to reply...? *remove*
