Abandoned mine reminds me a lot of old B&W movie Nosferatu, specifically the stairway scene. The more i look at it, the creepier it gets. I mean, obviously the mine is "abandoned", but while we see a person with a light in the background, there's this other shadow, too... Lurking... Somebody tell me i'm not seing things.

How about "Do one of the following: Gain a foo or gain a bar.

Because it says you need to do one, you cant purposefully choose the empty pile.
That's no different from choosing to gain a Curse from Torturer when the Curse pile is empty.
It is. Torturer doesn't require you do actually do one of the options, it lets you choose one and then you try doing it.
My wording specifies you actually need to do one.

Dominion instructions are not logical formulas. "Gain a Curse or discard two cards" as a dominion instruction can be followed if i try gaining a curse and fail, while the logical statement "You gain a curse or discard two cards" would be false.That's because dominion instructions are always divided in 1)try and 2)if possible, do. You try using logic instead of sequential instructions for your reasoning, but Dominion as a game lacks any ability to deal with that. There is no mechanic in the entire game that is capable of deciding whether something will happen before it was tried to do it.

So "Do one of the following: A or B" is the same as "Do A or do B", just split in two sentences. Dominion never knows whether you can do something before you try.

Edit: Nice example i learned from the rules section is that you'll never discard an Outpost, even when it's played during an Outpost turn. While it's pretty obvious you can't have that second Outpost turn (and so Outpost won't have any actual effect next turn), Outpost will still try giving you that turn and therefore stay in play.

I think the first card is too strong for 2$. You might think it's a deferred Silver, but it's not. It's much stronger than that and probably even too good for 3$. The fact that you can keep coin tokens as long as you want before spending them more than makes up for getting them one turn later. I'll help think of a name once that's fixed.

Should get a Village name (if there is an english word for it, some rough part of town, maybe) and is also quite good. I don't know if it's too good, but as coins are about as good as cards, this is a Village+ for the price of a Village. Not that we don't have that yet (Fishing Village), but it's a very good card nonetheless. As it's not a duration and if chained this is a Militia, i'd reconsider the price.

I think a deny-reaction becomes political if it
1) has an effect that is differently harmful for different strategies or
2) only hits a single player on use and cannot be revealed/used multiple times or
3) can be used multiple times but is so harmful that the first use on a player will warn other players and keep them from doing whatever triggers the reaction.

The reason i gave gaining a Victory card as an example is that it will usually be something all players want to do and that doesn't become terrible through the top-decking. Even if i have been warned because another player had to top-deck his card before, i'd often still want to gain those VPs.


That's not political. Obviously there's the potential to argue about choice, but there's never a choice of which player to target, so you can never be targeting the leader or anything of the sort. The only problem with "one-player-chooses" is if the one player is losing, a dickbag, and feels like kingmaking instead of playing to win.
It's still kingmaking if the losing player is "playing to win" in a situation in which he can't win and he could choose to help another player win the game or "play to win", resulting in a different player winning the game.

Not like you couldn't use any attack card which gives a choice to help certain players...
Nice examples: Oracle, Swindler and Pillage.

While we're on the subject, here's a radical modification to Scout: make it a duration! Scoutpost:

Now and at the start of your turn: Reveal the top 4 cards of your deck. Put the revealed Victory cards into your hand. Put the other cards on top of your deck in any order.

Ooh, I do it at the start of the turn I play it?  Excuse me while I go in my time machine...
it has the duration drawback of missing the reshuffle more often.
Except its scout, so it's actually a plus.

Kidding aside though, that is a cool concept, and theoretically fixes Scout well.
You know what, I considered that. That possibly can be a plus at times. See, Scout should still kinda suck, maybe even Chancellor Suck, but it doesn't have to Scout suck.

I think you guys have a too narrow approach about the 2$ attack. I guess not many people would have thought a nonterminal attack for 3$ would make it, and Urchin made it. Some attacks are more than just

I don't know what i was thinking when i wrote i wouldn't buy it for 2$... I don't think it's compelling, but that's a different thing. You guys are right it's nice to have this early.

I see that with deck inspection this card could be pretty good, provided you know what you do. The problem is that, without deck inspection i wouldn't buy this even for 2$. Why? Because this card may trash my Provinces. No card but Swindler does that, and usually Swindler will replace a Province with another one. Gaining a Gold for a Province is not good. Make it a choice and... well.

Somebody had a similar idea not so long ago, by the way.

I did a deny-reaction some time ago and posted it in this forum, but here it is again:

Lawyer

Choose one: Put a coin token on your Lawyer mat; Or trash this and gain a card costing up to 1$ per coin token on your Lawyer mat.

When another player gains a Victory card, you may reveal this from your hand. If he would put the card in his discard pile, he instead puts it on top of his deck.

The Reaction slows down others to buy your Lawyers some more time, and of course also goes with the "Red line" thematic of a class that somehow resembles Bureaucrat...


About the on-trash penalty here's an idea i had some days ago but which isn't ready yet:

Treasure, 5$
2$
When you play this, trash a Treasure in play and gain a card costing exactly 1$ more.

Stealing this with Thief would surely be fun... For the Thief, that is.

Not sure if I saw the original post.  Lawyer seems too powerful though.  The reaction is probably fine, but the action seems crazy good.  Buy as many Lawyers as possible, playing them at every opportunity until you've played them 8 times.  This should not take very long.  Now every subsequent play is a free Province.

I don't see any on-trash clause on your Relic.  Did you miss it?

About Lawyer, you are probably right. I didn't get much feedback on it when i posted it and never playtested it much. Since Guilds the mechanic has started feeling a bit old, anyways. I still like the reaction, so i guess it'll just get another action part.

Maybe one could fix Rebuild by not allowing players to name a card, don't know. Just plain kill the card, if nothing else works out. I wouldn't miss it.

I strongly disagree. The naming part makes the card stronger, yes, but it adds a certain amount of skill. Without the naming part, Rebuild is less strong (still strong!) but also very random. This would suck very hard in any mirror.

It's kill the card, then :P

My advice: Allow and demand fishing it out. If you want to avoid players using that as a chance to look through their discard intentionally, make another player (chosen by the premature up-cleaner) fish it out.
I don't think this is a good idea, since you know what's in your own discard pile, but others don't, so you're not really gaining any information by looking through your discard pile, but you are when you look through another player's discard pile.

It was an idea to exchange what would be an additional advantage for a punishment, but i admit it wasn't thought through. Usually a player'll only dig out his last turn's cards, so the benefit is about zero, anyhow.
